Hiya :wave2:
Have posted this on the weddings & honeymoon board and have had some good responses so I wondered if the anyone in the UK cared to share their engagement ring stories....
When my DF proposed on valentines day he had the ring already.
This was a pre-specified condition from me mentioned in hyperthetical discussions.
I know some people like to choose the ring together after the proposal but I had long since decided that if I was going to commit to my DF for life then he should at least be able to select my dream engagement ring! Which I am pleased to say he did.
(I will post a picture on the ring picture thread asap)
What about you? Who chose yours?

DH was in the army at the time and we were living in Germany. One of his friends was coming back over here for a weekend with his GF so Martyn drew a picture of the kind of ring he wanted me to have and then drew around the inside of one of my other rings. He then gave this to his mate and the money and asked him to get one when he was back in the UK :rotfl: I knew nothing about this so it was a nice surprise. He hid the ring in a box of celebrations (empty wrappers he had eaten all the chocs) So neither of us chose mine but i must say they did choose a lovely one :cheer2:

What ring? We put the cash towards a fridge instead  (I did insist on a platinum wedding ring though ;) )
I didn't want to go down the traditional engagement route, even though I suppose the act of preparing for the wedding tells people you are effectively engaged! We didn't have any savings at the time (not very long out of student 'poverty') and thought any money we did have would be better put towards things we'd need for setting up home.
... and I have very short stubby fingers which never seem to look good in rings!

Hi all,
We both chose Emma's engagement ring. We went to a famous shop and decided on the ring. Went to pay for it and the nice lady at the counter suggested that we purchase it on 10 months Interest Free credit. Since I had the cash in my hand I didn't really want to do this. The girl said that it was a great deal and that I could put the money in the bank to earn interest. Emma said why not so we paid the 10% deposit and left. Two weeks later we went back to the shop and Emma became the proud owner of her engagement ring.
Two and a half years later we have still only paid the 10% deposit for the ring (£90)!!!!

DH and I chose my ring together after I had said yes. I worked in Thomas Cook at the time and he came in got down on one knee and asked me to marry him in front of everyone! Then we went straight out to the shops to have a look for a ring!

I'm hoping to propose to my lovely lady whilst we're in Florida in September, though I haven't decided where yet, any ideas?...
...Of course, that's assuming I've paid the holiday off in time or the ring might be one of those you get from the vending machines!!!

I wouldn't have dared choose my other halves ring without her! It was a good job too as I would have chosen a solitaire style ring which turns out she didn't like! Oh and because I was short of cash she paid for it too!

It was a complete surprise!!! Even though we had been together for 10 years i had no idea!!! He proposed on my birthday at a family dinner infront of both families, it was very romantic. Simon chose the ring himself and it is beautiful, though i wouldn't have cared what it looked like i was So shocked!!! However si has VERY good taste and it was what i would have chosen

Oh dearie me! I'm ashamed to say I have no engagement ring due to lack of funds at the time ;)
My wedding ring only cost £16 from Argos but what can I say? We've been together for fifteen years and are very happy :)
I suppose I could buy a nicer one now and have it blessed or whatever but it wouldn't be the same really :)
If I had had one I would definitely have wanted to help with the choosing or I would probably have ended up with a Star Wars themed one or something

Karen, seems like we were in the same boat as you were....skint but happy ;)
We too never had the funds to buy one..and we chose wedding rings from somewhere like Argos. We have been together for 21 years this year but only married for 18 of them.
I would love a nice platinum/diamond ring...hint...hint...:):)(if DH reads this)

My husband and I chose my engagement ring together because I think he may have been afraid that I would change my mind before he could get the ring, after he had proposed, and get it back to my finger. Looking back now 15years ago I am appauled that I answered his proposal with a "probably I will marry you". That is the end of a very long sagga in how we got to the alter.

DH proposed on the last day of our holiday in Zakynthos. He had gone with his Mum two months earlier to get the ring and didn't know when to propse throughout the holiday then he was ill so it was on the last day as we sat at the beach on the way back to the airport. The only sad thing is the day after we got home I found out my darling Grand Dad had passed away that previous day :(

We chose ours together - I vividly remember going to Winegartens off Liverpool Street on a Sunday (they were shut on Saturday due to religous reasons) complete with Union card to get a discount!
Cost me a months pay I think (I'm sure that traditionally that was the going rate).

I knew the stone shape I liked and Nic chose it. It was too big to start when he gave it to me so I had to wait another wek to wear it.

Well I will do the short version, It all really started on Sept. 11 2001 which was the first day of our holiday, needless to say everything was overshadowed and as much as we tried to lose ourselves in the magic heartache for others was always a second away.
Fast foreword to Sept 11, 2002, the first day of our holiday and we had booked a table with Pooh and friends at Tony's Tavern as the Crystal Palace was under refit, Mark knows I need to start the holiday with a big hug from my main donkey so off we went to have breakfast.
after they had finished bringing us fruit, Mark said he was nipping to the loo, I did not think anything was unusual, soon after piglet came over and my first thought is that Mark is missing this and then tigger came over and started throwing confetti all over me... I will still sitting by myself and did not have any clue, but everyone in the restaurant was STARING :earseek: at me as no one else got the confetti treatment.
Mark returned soon after and I told him that he had just missed tigger and piglet and they had cucked a load of confetti over me, soon my main donkey, eeyore, comes trundling over with pooh, piglet, and tigger. Eeyore gives me tons of hugs as I am sitting down and I see the others have joined round the table, on the last hug, as I cannot see a thing because his face is sooo... well.. huge and was covering mine, he moves completely away amd I see my fruit is gone and in it's place is a little pillow, and then eeyore grabs my hand in a motion to stand and puts a little black box on the pillow, at which point mark stands up and asks me to marry him.... I was a crying wreck as I said yes, applause broke out and confetti flew, and I did not have one clue about any of this. Mark had organized all of this from the U.K.
We have been dusted by the pixie dust again as something extra special happened 3 days later that was unplanned.
We were at MGM, just chatting to a CM while waiting to see the Beauty and the Beast show she asked random bits about us i.e. where are you staying, where are you from etc. She was really lovely and we told her about the engagement as she was the only other person who knew, well, besides the entire restaurant that is, and she thought it was soooo romantic, mark mentioned that we call each other beauty and beast as nicknames, well, he does call me demon llama often as well, but thought better to mention that!
When we returned to POFQ that evening and opened the door, I smelt it... the overpowering scent of roses. We walked into the room and on the table was a huge engagement card signed from Belle and Beast and one perfect red rose, it was all arranged in such a beautiful way with care and perfection, it was not ordered or expected, I was a crying wreck again and we were dumbfounded and awestruck as we knew we had been dusted.
We knew it was the lovely CM and the Beauty and the Beast stageshow that had made this happen but in the next 15 days we never saw her again.....
sorry this is soooo long and I hope you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it!
Cheers!

:goodvibes Oh Ella, that is such a lovely story- made me go all misty eyed!
I'm not engaged so I can't comment but Rich (dcentity2000) bought me a ring for christmas a few years ago. He had it hand-made and designed it himself- its white gold with a sparkling ruby in it, its one of the prettiest things I own and even though we're not together anymore, I haven't taken it off since the day I got it :lovestruc

We've been married 20yrs this year and I still don't have an engagement ring! Everything happened so fast when we got together, we met in the February, he asked me to marry him in the June and we got married seven weeks later in the August! We didn't even think about an engagement ring, all our money was focussed on the wedding especially as we had to pay for it all ourselves. People said it wouldn't last *** we hardly knew each other and had very little money. I think after 20 years we can confidently say to them 'You were wrong'!
