Calling all past and present cruisers-What's the weather like in
December?

PattiPB

We did this cruise (12/12) last year, and will be returning in 2005!

As for weather, we were on the beach in Nassau and at CC, and we all went in the water! That means it was warm, because we are from Vegas, and I won't go in if it is cold. My kids, OTOH, would break through a layer of ice to go swimming it they had to.

HOWEVER, the last night of the cruise, and the entire following week, were cold and wet, so it is totally a crapshoot!

This year, we are travelling with my sister and her DH. Our DD will be 11, and our boys will be 9 & 7. They don't know about the cruise yet, because we are cruising this summer, and don't want to spoil it.

Wonder if anybody else is on this ship?? We have connecting cat 9's. We LOVED deck 2 last year, but had cat 10's.

Same thing last year! Right up until we left for FL, there was availability on our ship in all cats. When we checked in, I asked, and there were only a handful (9 I believe) of available cabins left!

We had about a dozen DISers who posted on our thread last year. Maybe they're just not the compulsive planners we are this year! LOL!!!

We did REAS in March-our first cruise and our first vacation in 20 years with no kids!
Our main reason was to get the advanced ressies for spa and Palo but now that you can book them online I don't think the swan and rose pedals are worth the extra $. The gift basket was nice but again, I think you could bring your own champagne and it would be just as nice without paying for the package.

We are taking our kids on this cruise - they have their own stateroom. I won't be paying the extra for REAS this time but plan to bring my own "surprises" and book my own spa and dinner online.

Hey, We're doing the MVMCP (1st time) after we dis-embark as well. I guess great minds think alike. Actually, the DW had to do a lot of sweet talking :rotfl2: NOT! to get me to book this. We also booked a PS @ LTT for the same evening. Really looking forward to seeing the MK all spruced up for X-Mas. We always see it decorated for Halloween, as you can probably tell from our signature. :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1

We are headed, too- our first DCL experience. 2 kids, age 4 and 6, who are already very excited. It will be a needed break, as I am busy campaigning for the fall election season for my boss-- this will go on steady through Nov 8!

I am just hoping that we don't have terrible weather, but in the end, just the quick getaway will be better than nothing, no matter what the weather! :sunny: :sunny: :sunny: :sunny: :sunny: :sunny: :sunny: :earsboy: :earsboy:

Still haven't picked a hotel for after the cruise...okay, so I still haven't picked a hotel for before the cruise!!! We leave on 7/28 for Tampa, WDW, and a CCL cruise, so I'm trying to concentrate on that trip. Once we get back, though, LOOK OUT! I'll be in commando planning mode.

We'll be there too. Can't believe the countdown is so close now. We've been looking forward to this for about 18 months.

DD16, DD13, DD12, DD7 & us. 2 rooms booked. We are SO Excited. Doing WDW for a week prior. Heading to Universal after get off the ship. Again, I think we will need a vacation from our vacation! Can't wait to see everything decorated for Christmas again.

I am currently debating booking a room at Comfort Suites for Atlantis priveleges. For all of us though, I'd have to book 2 rooms. Anyone want to split one?

Is anyone taking any special gear for the possible cold weather other than the obvious? What excursions are you going on? We are planning on doing the dolphin encounter AGAIN since we loved it so much last July. Nothing on CC except snorkling and relaxing. I am contemplating buying shortie wet suits (expensive!) since my daughter and I love the water so much and intend to spend so much time in it.

I'm expecting the weather to be much like what we had during our cruise at the beginning of March. It was mid-high 70's, the water was a little cool but very refreshing-no problem swimming. The only time we had to put on a sweater was the last day (at sea) when the wind were a little high and it drizzled some.

Tell me about the Dolphin excursion please-is it worth the $?

cruisinthecarribean
08-02-2005, 01:12 PM
Here's a couple of replies I have made to dolphin encounter questions. PM me if you have any other questions.

We were in Nassau last summer on a Disney cruise and we did the dolphin encounter and had a BLAST (it's worth every penny) Make sure and plan on staying all day. There are 2 boats that go back and if you take the later one you have time to eat a leisurely lunch and do some snorkeling. Bring your own gear if you have it or you can rent it on the island. Hope you meet the cutest dolphin, Stormy.

My daughter and I went on the Dolphin Encounter last July. It was WONDERFUL!!! Worth every penny. I took a video recorder and a camera, but was unable to use them. They REALLY discourage the use of your own cameras, and to ensure you put it away the first thing they do is have the dolphin (ours was named Stormy) go around the circle of people tail side out of the water and DRENCH everyone. I quickly put my cameras away. That being said I bought the video and pics they took. Really cute ones with dolphin hugs, etc. They are darling! If my scanner worked I would post a few. Warning: they are very expensive, like $130 for everything and they do NOT take your top of the world card (or whatever it's called card) Take your mastercard or cash. Some people took underwater cameras and may have gotten a few good shots, but when will you ever be there again? We still have ours pictures on our fridge and kitchen counter.

I just came back from Florida. We were STUNNED with how awesome our Carnival Cruise was, but are now full steam ahead for the Wonder!!!

Still don't have hotels before or after booked...can't decide between onsite or off! Last December we were offsite (rental house), and the parks were so empty it wasn't a problem without EE. Decisions, decisions...

Yesss!!!!!!!!!! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc I managed to make online reservations for Palo, and for a scenic tour in Nassau.

Had a bit of a problem initially, as our castaway club number was not on our reservation :badpc: (only our 2nd DCL cruise). Had to phone DCL, and this was quickly cleared up.

Believe my DW will be making a spa reservation of some sort, but other than that, don't believe we will be making any other reservations.

Can't help you out too much with a chum for your son (mine will be 18)-check out the kid's clubs-I've heard great reports.

Palo is a wonderful, adults only restaurant-they charge a $10 per person fee and you must have reservations. I love it there but that's my opinion!

Newsflash! Okay, just a gossipflash, but it's still worth posting:

Somebody just asked about Narnia Prem-earing on early December cruises. Apparently it opens 12/9, so I'm hoping we'll get to see it on the ship. Disneyland is in the process of creating a Narnia meet and greet, and seeing a Prem-ear would be very exciting for my kids!

Jennifer:

I think you're going to be unbelievably shocked by the children's programming. You'll be lucky if you and DH even see you son anytime before bed!

Last year, my boys (then 8 & 6) wanted to be in the clubs all the time. They ate at warp speed during dinner, and DH took them to the clubs before our food was even served! My DD was 10, and didn't care too much for the clubs, but that age was pretty clique-ish. Anyway, my youngest boy was in the same area your son will be in, and man is it COOL! No matter what pictures you see of Captain Hook's pirate ship, it doesn't do it justice.

Jennifer - we'll have to get the boys together. My son is in daycare so I'm not overly worried about the kids club. I have friends that say their kids love it and others who have kids that don't go in at all. It's their vacation and I'm leaving it up to them - they can stay if they want to or be with us. We have it a bit easier - my mom, stepdad, sister, brother-in-law and 2 y/o niece are going as well. (NicRI above is my sister - she's the one that discovered the boards!). So we have built in babysitters if needed! We plan on having one night of dancing and carrying on and I did book one surprise spa appt for me and the hubby! I think I'm more excited than the kids!

I did talk to my little guy about the boat drill so he doesn't get scared - I hear it can be very loud. We're calling it a "boat fire-drill" and that seems to make sense to him.

You could make sure you 3yo has eaten earlier and then bring a few toys or something to keep him occupied if he's still awake. Or, you can try to switch your meal time when you get to the ship. There may be another family who is looking for a later meal time. I'm sure it will all work out.

Since we're from the north, New England, anything above 50 degrees is shorts weather for us. We'll be the group melting on the beach!! :rotfl:

During the day it should be nice enough for Shorts and t-shirts... might want to bring some warmer clothes for the evenings or even a light Jacket. I've read somewhere that for the little one, you might want to bring footed PJ's, as it can get cool at night. DCL has a temp listing for this time of year...OK well I cannot find where I saw the average temps.

Coming from New England, where the moto is 'Just wait 10 minutes, the weather will change!' A girl has got to have options! I'm an over packer anyway, I would rather be safe then sorry.

And you can always do laundry onboard if you need to... not that you want to spend time on vacation doing that task.

misha
12-01-2005, 07:42 PM
Jennifer,
Glad you're still around! I was getting worried that we hadn't heard from you in a while! We're all on early seating but I've heard parents say they like late seating because they can feed the kids early and then see the shows before the grown up dinner.

I am also a notorious overpacker (must be genetic!) and am trying to contain myself. We're staying a few days after the cruise so I think we'll be doing laundry at some point! My DD is easier she can stay reasonably clean for almost a day! :rotfl: But my DS (4) gets dirty before he even finishes dressing! I'm hoping for bathing suit weather and we are only bringing 2 pairs of "docker" type pants that he will only wear at dinner and swap out shirts.

The avg temp is low 70s for FL and mid 70s for the Bahamas. I'm with Nick - if it's above 50 my kids will be in the water and we live farther south than she does!

We look forward to meeting you and your family - and stop panicking! As long as you remember a bathing suit and t-shirt or two you'll be fine! Hmmm maybe a pair of shorts too! :cool1: I'm going to have a margarita waiting for Nick - do I need to have one waiting for you too! :earboy2:

Spent today at Magic Kingdom, our first time here at Christmas. Was expecting WAY more decorations. Main Street is spectacular, but the rest of the park especially Tomorrowland basically is ignoring the holiday. Lines in the morning are REALLY short, but the afternoon waits are similar to the summer for Fantasyland. Weather is warm in the afternoons and cool (cold to me) like 50ish in the evenings. We're staying at the CSR,LOVE it. Wish we would have gotten a place closer to the pool (wish I had read disboards about the resorts) Am debating going to the MVCPP (or whatever the name is) it's SO expensive and it's like Disney is double charging me for the day to stay past 6PM ($41.25) Any other questions? We are a family of 3. We do Christmas alone. It's really peaceful. Thanksgiving is the stressful family time for us with the whole extended family. What did ya'll do at Nassau and Castaway Cay? We had 3 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! times at Palo. Can't imagine a cruise without it

We did the "shopping tour" with Rachel the Disney Cruise shopping lady, did the straw market and Atlantis (craziest taxi rides I have ever experienced in my life) and drank a bucket of beer at Senor Frogs.

Castaway Cay-kids Jetski-ed and the rest of the time just relaxed on the adult beach.

How about you guys?

All three of us went snorkling in Nassau. It was wonderful! The water was "refreshing" (FREEZING) so I was so thankful for our shorty wetsuits. At Castaway Cay we were going to go snorkling again, but they canceled the shore excursion due to the "wind". I'm quite sure they could have done the afternoon trip, but the number of attendees was probably not worth them taking the boat out. I am still very upset about that and wish I would have confronted them at the shore excursion counter....I don't know when I will be in the Caribbean again! Still had fun hanging out at Serenity Beach- a little cold. Do any of you have dds named Nichole, McKenzie, or Brooke. My dd Carrie became good friends with them, and they exchanged emails and phone numbers.

Were any of you surprised at how few people were in Serenity Bay that afternoon? DW and I felt like we had the place to ourselves. DW spent about an hour walking around and taking pictures. The water was a bit cold, but we loved it.

We got there about noon and there were only a handful of people. Stayed a couple of hours and had lunch. The water was so low that we walked out a long way and it was still only up to our knees. It was a little too cold and windy to sit out on the beach.
Actually we were surprised at how many loungers there were left at the kids beach. No problem getting four with an umbrella. Seemed to be a little more sheltered there and definitely lots more to see with all the kids running around.

It was a little cool. The water was warmer than it gets up here in the middle of summer, from RI. I spent 2 1/2 hours snorkling, yes I have the blister scar to prove it... darn flippers! DH and I were suprised to find the beach not crowded when took the ride out to Serenity bay. Wish we had time there, but I couldn't leave my DD with my mom all day... after the snorkling adventure. Whole idea of the family trip was to spend time with the family. I'd like to spend a few days just at Castaway Cay... think Disney will ever entertain that Idea??? :earboy2:

Guess I'll have to start saving for our next visit... :confused3

We went to the Castaway Club party and the Captain mentioned a cruise next year that will "double dip" and spend 2 days at Castaway Cay. That would be great! :sunny:

I think there is already a thread for that one - it's been open for booking for a while. $$$$$ even more than a regular 7 day! :earseek:

Received ours about 4-6 weeks after our first cruise.

Our kids have not yet received theirs from this past Dec cruise (their first).
