I was just reading an article that India wants to promote their tourism industry and are in talks with Disney to do so at Disneyland but it also says that they are also in talks to get pavilion on India to promote India so I am guessing Epcot.

I read it at Expressindiadotcom on the right hand side.

We may see a Taj Mahal at Epcot

More likely, Disney will open another 1/2 park on the sub-continent. Bob Iger's been talking alot about getting into 'emerging markets' like China & India...

when most the country of India can barely feed themselves I just don't see going to a theme park in the budget. :rotfl2:

I do not think the article said that they are opening one there or are planning to. It just said that they want to promote their Movie industry, etc in the Disneyland Park in California but also they want to open an Indian Pavilion to promote their tourism industry are in talks with Disney :flower: .

Not holding my breath on this--
Maybe someones great- grand children will be around to see it.
But it would be nice, certainly, if done correctly. Some sort of small ride, maybe a film in a SIT DOWN theater, a nice restaurant.

Let me be the first to suggest where that should put it, I would have them replace the outpost with it. The only two other spots possible are, between Morocco and France, or Mexico and Norway.

The only two other spots possible are, between Morocco and France, or Mexico and Norway
Even after the addition of the International Gateway, which spoiled 1 (or 2) potential pavilion spot(s), there are many spots left for countries to be added to Epcot. The designers are just very good at disguising the empty spots
Between Canada and UK, are potentially 2 spots, despite the addition of the Millenium celebration building. Actually plenty of room if they take the pavilion up an extra floor or 2, providing great (restaurant) viewing of Reflections of Earth and the World Showcase.
Between France and Morocco are room for at least 2 countries (or, of course 1 double-sized country).
Another 2 pavilions could fit in between Morroco and Japan.
1 pavilion could fit between America and Italy.
at least 1 pavilion could fit between Germany and Italy.
at least 1 pavilion could fit between the Outpost and Germany.
and of course the Outpost could be converted into a full pavilion.
and finally there's room for 1 more between Mexico and Norway.
That's room for 10 more countries.

There's also ways they could represent even more countries with a few tricks...
they could create a little continent where they take one of the double wide sections, let the back section represent several related countries (like South America, with Brazil being the main host), then build out 2 more on the lagoon side (like a couple of the island nations: Porta Rico, Jamaca), each would share a central outside dining area and a stage making the most of the room. The 4 or more countries would keep the stage busy, and guests could choose between 4 or more different cuisines at one location.

I for one would love to see the TAJ MAHAL replica at World showcase. That would be so cool but I think it would be a little too close to looking like Morocco but they sure would have great shows because I have seen their costumes and such and they are so beautiful.

I personally think that would be awesome! I'd love to see an Indian pavillion with a top notch restaurant attached!

I wonder if there are any thoughts of working something into AK though? Especially since it fits the park's theme? Hmmmmm....

Either way....Disney needs a great Indian and Thai restaurant. JMHO!

As long as it's done to Disney Standards, I agree!

but,
I just can't get pass of the possibilities for attractions if it were to be India
for example:

Cashmere's Great Escape
Agni-II's Flight
MISSION:ISLAMABAD
MoRoc'in Rockets
Figments' New Delhi Sandwich Shop

India is sort of represented in AK as Asia. India did have a part of the Millenium Village, though it was a small part. I think it would be cool to have an Indian pavillion there at EPCOT.

Agreed as well... And actually, some other comments on this thread are offensive, smiley or no smiley attached. Yes I can take a joke, I get it. But I think using stereotypes or any other uneducated comment is rude and offensive. I am not a party pooper on the DIS, but when I see things like that it just rubs me the wrong way.

Anyways, I too would love to see any country added to the WS. I think WS is one of my absolute favorites at WDW.

I don't think anybody meant any offense, but I agree that some of the comments are a bit much.

An India pavilion would be fine with me, but its pretty clear that what it all comes down to is if the Indian government, or some other entity who wants to promote the country is willing to foot the bill. (Unless the WS strategy changes)

Hopefully this rumor won't suffer the same fate as the rumor of the Spanish and Korean pavilions.

Definitely not enough! I guess you're thinking of the Maharajah trek, but that's about animals. A WS pavilion is about people and culture. India is my top choice for a new pavilion; just think how fantastic the food and the architecture would be, not to mention the possibilities for live entertainment! It would be a very colorful pavilion.

Second choice is a tie between Russia and Thailand.

.... I'm refering to EE.
Does "EE" refer to Expedition Everest?

Mount Everest, the highest peak in the Himalaya Mountain Range, is in Nepal.

And Expedition Everest is a thrill ride, not a World Showcase pavilion that celebrates the culture, architecture, food, and products of a particular country -- not Nepal, and certainly not India.

India would be a great addition to World Showcase.

Plus4206
04-07-2005, 12:42 PM
From what I've read by a WDW CM, the preshow area of EE is a bigger wow then the actual ride. Maybe I've got the wrong mental image in my mind of what the Nepal area looks like because of it's location to Asia in AK. But even the Asian area of AK probably has as much Indian theming as any WS pavillion would have.

Like I said, I'll welcome any addition to the WS. I just associate India to AK.

Amphigorey
04-07-2005, 01:07 PM
Hmm. The Asian theming of AK strikes me as more Cambodian than Indian, but I haven't been in a while.

I feel the same way. The cultural cracks are unnecessary. Most of the people on this site are adults, and I am not old enough to preach to you. But for the children who post and read here, here's my lesson for the day: Don't say/post anything, even in jest, about another culture that you wouldn't feel comfortable saying to a member of that culture to his/her face.

For examply, I wouldn't feel comfortable saying:
1) Your country can barely feed itself so it is probably too poor to afford to be a part of Disney;
2) A portion of your country is unsanatized and doesn't bathe;
3) Most Indians in this country work/own 7/11s, Days Inn, etc.

One of my few bad Disney experiences was seeing some idiot make fun of an asian family while I was on line for Test Track. It bummed me out. [Guess he didn't realize that he happened to be a lot closer to China than the American Adventure.] Anyway, what bummed me out was not that this asian family had to endure 10 seconds of this idiot's banter. It was the fact that this idiot was doing it in front of his own 2 kids. What a father figure.

I agree.

It is just sad that people always have to say something bad and sour. I also feel that it may be how they were raised also unfortunately.

I certainly do hope we see an India pavilion with Indian food. Yum and think of the shopping possibilities WOW.

I also have many friends who are Indian who own 7-11, stop n go's, hotels, motels and I always envy them for their hard work to own their own businesses.

But you also can't dismiss the fact that India is a poor nation with poverty, starvation and health issues that can't be ignored. Is spending 50 mill or so to build a WS pavillion the best use for that money ?

With the exception of Morroco, the World Showcase pavilions at Epcot are not funded by national governments.

Consider Japan. Mitsukoshi is the sponsor, which allows them to operate the restaurants and store.

An India pavilion would be a welcome addition to Epcot. It would take a consortium of Indian companies for whom the pavilion would further their business objectives. It would probably also take financial involvement by Disney, and right now it seems unlikely that Disney wants to pour their own money into World Showcase.

This is the first line of the OP: "I was just reading an article that India wants to promote their tourism industry ....."

But the point of my post was more in defense of those here who pointed out some of the problems in India and are now getting flamed for them.

raidermatt

I think only one person, the one who originally commented on the priorities, could possibly fit what you describe, Plus.

That aside, all countries have problems, but that doesn't mean its unwise to use funds to promote its tourist industry. If successful, they can bring in more tourist dollars than they spend on the promotion... the goal of all advertising/promotion.

In this case, we don't have enough info to even know who's putting up the money, or even if things have reached that stage. The government may be involved, but they could be involved to find corporate sponsors.

Lots of possibilities. In the unlikely event that the pavilion ever sees the light of day, perhaps we will get the details.

This prompts the question - who does sponsor the various pavilions? And what exactly does that mean? Does Disney put no money into it?

ITA ::yes:: No one's dismissing the fact that India has issues. But the way it was previously addressed in this thread was not so nice. Sorry this is my third post on this thread, but stereotypes are simply offensive and unacceptable. As someone said earlier, would you say those things to someone from India?

It's been what, 20 years since they added a country to WS? It's hard to believe that Disney could not come to some sort of agreement with ANY other government. Oh wait, Eisner has been in charge for the last twenty years! Must be a connection there somewhere. :( :rolleyes2

Personally, I would LOVE to see them add a country as different as Greece or Russia. The architecture is totally different and unlike anything in the World Showcase now, the food is, the music, it would be awesome.
When I think of India, I think it is too closely related to the style of Morocco.
ALSO...I'd LOVE to see a section added on to the American Pavilion to honor our NATIVE AMERICANS and Hawaii!! That would be AWESOME!
And I do wish in the UK, there was more representation of Ireland and Scotland. That's a little disappointing. Like the Blarney castle, or something.

There are lots more ideas and new and different things they could add, other than India. I hope they see this! Well, we're talking about Dis, ofcourse they see it. Right?!?!

Ummm... India and Morocco are "too closely related"?

India and Morocco have different people, different history, different languages, different predominant religions, different food, and different cultures.

Morocco is in Northern Africa. India is on the Indian subcontinent of Asia. The distance between Casablanca, Morocco, and Mumbai (Bombay), India, is approximately 5 thousand miles. That's about the same distance as between Chicago, USA, and Moscow, Russia.

If India and Morocco are "too closely related," then so are Norway and Japan.
