View Full Version : The True Cost of Points!

There have been many discussions here about how to calculate the true cost of points. I've always calculated my cost at about $5.50 per point. Many folks though, have always argued that the true cost is around $10 because you need to calculate in the loss in investment income from the money spent. So, with that in mind, I considered my loss in investment value the other day. Considering my portfolio has dropped 50% in the past 18 months (heavy in tech stocks), my investment value would have been way negative, I figure my point cost to be about $2.75 per point. What a great buy!! :D ;)

LOL

Keep working at it Crissup, maybe you can figure a way to get the cost below zero!

I like your math, John! Actually, if you go by the increase in the price per point from Disney since we bought last August, DVC has proven to be one of my best investments!

OK, we have a deal. I'll buy your points at $2.75 each. If that fall through, I'll rent them at $2.75 per point per year. LOL.

John, you and my husband need to have a talk. He thought his tech stocks were a sure thing and my DVC points were a waste of our resources. ;)

LOL! Actually, I thought my tech stocks *and* my DVC were a sure thing. So, at least I was half right. :)

In 95 my husband pressed me to join the DVC. I do not like timeshare and was way against it. With a new baby on the way, it was the last thing we needed (debt).

I have been 150% wrong (and I'll never admit that again). This investment has been the best thing we've ever done. And before our stocks went south, we never thought of DVC as an investment (merely a great place to plan and take vacations).

Although we've added on 7 times, we still feel we do not have enough points!

With add-ons it makes the math harder, but I figure a point for me equals around $4.21 ~ and that includes the first 5 years of free length of stay passes (that's 280 days!).

We've also been successful in having many people join through us!

Have a dvc day.........

Oh no! Should have gone with Disney stocks instead of tech stocks, lol! ;)

I am convinced I need to buy more points now! Maybe before BCV come on board! Sounds like a good bargain to me...:)

Now, now, guys... that wouldn't be the sales price, that would be the rental price. Hey.... I may need to rent some points for November... $2.75 sounds like a nice point rental price ;) ;) ;)

and now she runs and ducks for cover....

I meant to say tell me when you're ready to rent to some points for $2.75 a point. I'll take some right now for a December stay.

I have a little extra cash that is itching for a new home and even though DH won't admit it, I know he would rather see me invest it in more points than do anything else with it. HMMM....

It's nice to hear that somebody else's portfolio looks like a bomb went off in it. Misery loves company and all.

We're getting ready for our first visit in Sept, I'll let you know then what I think about my "investment".

Us Too!!! Yup, lost 20% within the last year... I'm just happy it was only 20% LOL... I'll watch them rise again I hope!

DVC? All I can say is, It's the BEST!!! I'd love to rent points for 2.75, maybe we should start a wait list :D

Gotta agree with Diane on the roller coaster performance of Disney stock. And don't get me started about tech stocks. I convinced my kids to take their life savings and purchase mutual funds. In less than 6 months, both kids lost close to 70% of the value of their savings (on paper). I guess that I should have had them purchase some add-on points so that we could stay at WDW longer (or more often). Oh well, you live and (sometimes) learn.

I figure that our first 210 points (the ones we purchased in 1995 with park passes) have paid for themselves by now. It's going to take a bit longer for the resale points, but considering that the resale cost me less than our original "investment", it won't be too long before we recover our value on those points as well.

That math posts that show up on this board never fail to amaze me. I usually don't get them-- math gives me a headache ;) -- but THIS one I like!! My DH thinks I should sell "my" points at the new going rate to make some money. I told him there was no way I was going to give up my prized BWV points for a mere $25 per point increase!!
