Anyone ever went with a child on soy milk?? Do they have soy milk available anywhere there? My dd is on soy milk because she has reactions to cow's milk she gets watery bms and rash if she gets too much. Cheese does it too but not as bad it takes quite a bit of cheese in her diet to cause the problems.

I have to carry soy milk with me everywhere. :sad2: I usually carry it in the bottles I used with my breastpump and I can take 4 4oz bottles of it in one of these. She used to drink cows milk on rare occasions where we had to resort to it but now she will not drink it at all she doesn't like the taste.

I'm really not looking forward to dragging soy milk in coolers. I guess I will look for smaller containers of aseptic(kind on the shelf that don't need to be refrigeratered until opened)packaging. I have not seen small packages and do not know if she would drink it warm anyway she usually doesn't like to finish her milk if it sits for 10 minutes or what not. She will not drink soda usually but will drink lemonade and diluted juices so I guess those can replace a few of the liquids. One other thing is she will not drink water which I know will be important to keep hydrated. I will start working now with highly diluted juice and work up to all water. She will drink water out of my spouted bottle though so might be an option too.

Yes, my dd drinks soymilk and I buy it warm in "boxes" in the natural food section. I was able to buy both the westsoy and silk brands at the albertsons by seaworld. Sorry, don't have directions as the towncar service took us there.

They have it in large and small "juice box" sizes and my dd loves all the flavors. Her fav is the silk as the 6oz boxes have animals on them and look as cool as the juices the kids drink at school.

You can keep them warm until you need to use them and chill as necessary. At wdw I kept a couple in my backpack, at the counter serve places I asked for a cup of ice with a lid, poured the soy in and dd had her "milk".

Here is a link on the westsoy product

I couldn't find info on the silk but hopefully your supermarket will have it.

Hi, Melissa-

Do you have a Wild Oats, Whole Foods Market or other large natural foods store near you?

They have individual kid-sized boxes of soy milk. You can freeze them in your hotel room, then let them thaw the next day so that they'll be cold... Soy milk freezes well and then all you have to is shake well -- which you already have to with soy anyway.

I'm very allergic to milk and milk products, so I'm always looking for soy options and have seen these repeatedly...

I agree that Silk is a great product!

If you're also worried about the soy, in terms of her getting enough calcium each day, you can try calcium-enriched orange juice too.

If I were you, to cut down on what I had to lug around, I would probably take a few empty sippy cups/bottles each day, with a small amount of sugar-free Tang or equivalent powder (since she doesn't like water), to fill with cold water at drinking fountains as needed -- or with bottled water. I would then bring some cheese cubes or other healthy higher-sodium snack that would make her thirsty and cause her to drink more.

I hope that helps...
Sheila

My girls love the sports bottles, and WDW sells them with a bottle strap that my girls think is very cool.

Buy one water bottle with the sports top the first day or bring one from home and then you can refill as needed. When they wore the bottle around the neck they seemed to drink more. The MK bottle strap was the favorite - I will see if I can find a picture.

Then I used the single serve crystal lite packets for some additional flavor. I know nutrasweet isn't ideal for kids so I used just a hint in the kids and then used the rest in mine. Made the water just a tad lemony for them and they loved it.

This is what I got, its ideal to pour into a water bottle but I got it at the local supermarket at a much more pleasant price, you don't have to order it from this site!!

My DS was 2.25 years old when we went in Dec 2004, and he is lactose intolerant. So we made a grocery run and bought a half gallon of Lactaid milk and just carried a sippy cup of that in a cooler pack (with a few ice packs) when we went into the parks. We ate breakfast in the room and came back at naptime, so I didn't have to carry more than one cup (and could often get him to drink apple juice instead, which comes in more portable containers).

It wasn't ideal, but sure was better than when the lactose intolerance kicks in, poor kid!!

my DS sounds like he has an identical problem to your DD -

every sit down restaurant we were in had soy milk - I told every server and they were really good about it - the chef came out in every restaurant to talk with me - I had them bring him Mickey pasta in every restaurant - it was just plain pasta shaped like Mickey - he loved it and I felt like he was getting a cool treat when his sister was getting ice cream!!

You can request a fridge for medical reasons if you don't have one and then you can get soy milk to have in your rooom

the only problem I found is that Nick drinks vanilla Silk Soy and the disney soy was not vanilla so he was reluctant to drink it - but he did

I made sure he had at least one glass in the morning and at bedtime and tried to get what I could during the day

My sons (2&3) are allergic to cow's milk and they actually drink goat's milk. I buy goat's milk at the grocery store when I'm there. I bring a shake container (Rubbermaid brand I bought at Target) filled with goat's milk and keep it in a cooler in the car (we usually rent one). I bring a small cooler (the one that came free with a diaper bag and usually hold 2 bottles) and put their sippy cups in there and bring it into the parks. That way, if they have finished their milk and want some when we get back to the car (which is usually the case), they can have some more. DSs did not like the taste of goat's milk initially so we add some powdered Nesquik to it and they love it. Also, the Nesquik adds calories which my underweight DSs need.

the sit down resturants have soy milk, but it is not readily available at counter service. I went down to the food court in our hotel the day we checked in and asked to speak to the manager. I explained to him that we needed soy milk (one of my twins couldn't digest milk, and it is easier to have them both drinking the same thing). He then put it on his daily ordering sheet and kept in stock for us the whole time we wre at the resort.

A friend of mine stayed at WL and they actually made a grocery run for her at no additional expense. They told her that since WL did not carry it in the hotel store then they would go and get it for her. She just marked down exactly what she wanted and had the soy milk in her room waiting for her when she returned from the park that day. They put the cost of the groceries on her room tab.
Good Luck with everything.

Thanks so much. You have all been very helpful. We will likely be staying at my dads which is about 45 minutes away so its all gotta come with us in morning. But I think I'll do the aseptic packs. She has drank the plain but its been awhile she has had vanilla for so long now she may not drink regular.

What juices do they sell in the quick grab and go restraunts?? Only apple because she gets really loose(bms) with that too which is why we have switched to only diluted white grape juice or cranberry mixtures which oddly she loves too LOL. She is on sippys only but does well with spouts and getting good with straws but she tips the cups and spills it. :sad2: She normally has 4-5 sippys a day. She still drinks a lot of milk most of her fluids are soy milk she has one highly diluted juice sippy on some days but not everyday.

I think the frozen boxed idea would be great. And a couple un frozen. I don't think it would hard to get a cup of ice.

Still gonna work on getting her to drink and like water because its good for her to get lots of water.

Sheila,
Yep we have a Whole foods here. But I'll see if there is one near my dad in Lakeland that is likely where we will go to pick up soy milk to stock up at his place while there.

TJ,
Tang is good idea I'll check it out try it with her see if she'll drink water with a little of it and leave the powder in the bottom of a couple sippys or bring a little film canister with some to pour in bottles. She is doing well with spout bottles so she'd do well with a bottle of water probably if I can get her to drink it is another question. LOL

Thanks again you all have been a huge help.

P.S. My dad is a programmer analyst for Publix he would not be caught dead in Albertson's. :rotfl: I will have him look in Publix near him or for whole foods health food stores near him. ;)

My son has to drink soy milk, but I've never bought anything other than the soy milk in the refrigerated section by the regular milk. I'm very interested in these small boxes you're describing. I assume these are in the health food area of the store? And do they taste the same as the refrigerated varities like Silk Soy or 8th Continent?

Our local A&P and Wegmans carry the aseptic packs of soy and rice milk. I also find them at my local health food store. If you have trouble finding them you can always order them off of the silk website.

Can you educate me a little bit? What does aseptic mean? And does it taste the same as what I buy in the refrigerated carton?

What does aseptic mean and how is it different from regular Silk Soymilk?

Literally, aseptic means “free of germs” it is used to describe a particular kind of food packaging. Aseptic containers are square and box-like and are often used for products like juice, soup, soy or rice milk. The containers are sterile and hermetically sealed much like canned foods, which allows them to be kept in storage without refrigeration. They are great for stocking your pantry or taking on a trip. Aseptic containers use a variety of different recyclable materials to keep the product inside fresh. Once opened, aseptic products do need to be refrigerated. Silk Aseptic Soymilk can be found on an unrefrigerated shelf in the health food section of grocery stores as well as any natural or health food specialty store.

Thanks for the info. about soy milk being available in sit-down restaurants! My daughter will just be coming off formula when we go to WDW in 3 weeks and I would prefer that she have soy milk over fruit juices. (Both kids are lactose intolerant.)

My youngest DD, now 4 is allergic to milk products also. She is getting better now and can tolerate somethings with a small amount of cheese or milk in them, but not milk straight. I kept her on soy follow-up formula until she was 2 because of this. It was great. I got one of the divider canisters to hold the formula and put it in my bag and brought a sippy. I just mixed it with cold water when she needed to drink. It was easier this way.

When she turned 3 I went to vanilla soy milk. All sit downs have it (at least plain soy milk). Also, tell the hostess to note on your seating card about the allergy. Then also tell the waiter or he'll ask you because its on the card. The chef will come out and tell you what is okay for her to eat. Also, the chef will break out the toffrutti or rice dreams ice cream if you ask. If your at a buffet and she is 19 mons. it will be free. If you are at other sit downs there will be a small charge. So she can have her special ice cream!

:confused3 We don't do dairy either - for other reasons (and because I am lactose intolerant)

So, why not just get juice or soda while you're at the park?

If you're concerned about nutrients, the child can easily make up the difference in eating healthily.

Also, chocolate syrup is dairy-free, so if they won't drink the plain soy milk, you can always ask if they have Hershey's syrup to add.

Because as I said she will not drink soda at all. She will drink juice I just don't want her having it all day and if they only have apple she can't drink more than a few ounces because being a natural laxative and she already has loose bowls she gets bad bms from apple juice. I want atleast a few of her sippys to be milk. Besides sometimes the girl will refuse anything but her soy milk. I will look I saw at one of my local grocery stores they had little serving sized aseptic packs which would be ideal.

Good idea about the the Hersheys. I don't know if she will drink plain soy milk anymore I have been buying vanilla for so long she may not.

We may only be heading to Disney for one day so not much to worry about but in future next summer probably we will be taking a long trip and spending more time at Disney.

My parents live near the Winter Park Whole Foods. It's a good half hour drive from WDW without traffic. We are a completely dairy-free family and I would suggest you buy the individual serving-size soymilks for the parks and pack them in your luggage. That way you aren't scrambling to get some when you arrive. The alternative is if your family members can pick some up for you prior to your arrival. For night use obviously you can buy the larger containers since you'll have fridge access. But I would not risk taking "opened" soymilk into the parks, especially in warmer weather. Good luck!

My kids drink Almond milk. Both get tummy aches, constipation, increased reflux, rashes with cow's milk. Soy gives my daughter the same upset tummy/constipation as cow's milk and my son was allergic to soy. he seems to have outgrown it but it was not a pretty sight when I tried to give him soy formula so it wasnt a surprise that his allergy testing showed positive. Anyway doctor said not to bother trying goats milk so my DD started on rice milk. after trying all the rice milks for my son with any kind of flavoring (he is strongly opposed to chocolate drinks) we ended up with almond milk. So to make it easier for me they both just drink it. My son only drinks Blue Diamond's Almond breeze regular or vanilla and likes it with strawberry flavoring. Occasionally he has had Nesquick Strawberry readymaid from the grocery since I keep trying milk to see if they are outgrowing things (thankfully they are getting better and better with it) NO OTHER MILK BEVERAGE crosses his mouth he is so picky.

All that to tell you that I'm pretty familiar with looking for alternative milks in stores and carting it around with me. The packaging being similar thought I could maybe help you with finding / packing them. All of the grocery stores around me have atleast one mostly 2 (some more) different brands of both soy and rice and those will all be in various flavors on the shelf. We have 2 Publix grocery stores and one has a much bigger selection of them than the other. The one with less has the Non- frige ones (and juice box size) with the organic foods section. The other one is in an odd place in the middle of the store I think on the aisle with the canned fruits. Kroger is with the health foods but all the other stores I find it in the oddest places. It may be with the health foods but they have such a small health food section that you hardly see it. Food lion stocks like a total of 8 boxes of special milks. Easy to miss it. So anyway, the first time I found it in each store I had to find an employee and ask they usually didnt know what in the world I was talking about and had to ask someone else. They mostly come in quarts which I find great for traveling, i end up sticking them here and there throughout the car. I'm not sure what all has been already posted. I try to buy when I'm near a smaller healthfood grocery. NOT the whole foods market, small healthfood store like you see in a mall or something, or other chain large healthfood store. They seem to have higher prices than the grocers. this small store I buy from has prices as much as $1 less per quart and I can buy by the case(12 quarts or 8 half gallons) to save more.

My DD is 5 and drinks soy milk. She was allergic to all milk protein (hives) but outgrew it when she was about 3. She still won't drink cow's milk - thinks it is yucky. Anyway, we have gone with her 3 times now and I buy the Silk Soy Vanilla (she is VERY picky and will only drink Silk Vanilla or Very Vanilla) in the aseptic packs. I bring 4 of the quart size which last her a week. I double bag them in the gallon size zip-loc bags and put them in our checked luggage. No leaks yet. The first 2 times we stayed at CBR and POFQ and I packed a soft sided collapsable cooler which we filled with ice in the morning and at night to keep them cool once the carton was opened. Last time we stayed at the Contemporary and had a fridge - boy was that nice! On vacation she pretty much just has milk in the morning and at night so I don't have to bring it into the parks. She is a huge water drinker and has that with her meals - once in a while she has lemonade but she doesn't like soda or juice.

I had no idea they might have it in the sit down restaurants - next time we go I will have to ask! Thanks to those that mentioned this. We also might do a cruise and I suppose we will have to haul the cooler along again.... I doubt they have soy milk on the DCL?
