It's renting DVC points!! I was very hesitant to do it - never knew anyone that had done it before and it just sounded too good to be true. But I took the plunge this summer and it is as good as it sounds. If you need some reassurance, or just info as to how it works, email me and I'll explain how it worked for me. It worked so well, I'm renting again this Dec and next July!

If you can afford to rent DVC points that many times ,then you should definately look into buying them. It is much more affordable than people think. It was one of the best things we ever did! If you want any info. just let me know.

Forgive me for throwing a wet blanket on the festivities here but while this is certainly a way to make sure you have a nice place to stay (ie. more than just a hotel room and 1 bathroom) while at Disney, I fail to see that this is a great deal. I looked into doing this for the last week in February next year (granted this is peak season and we need a 2 bedroom unit) but at that time, a 2 BR unit in Old Key West goes for aproximately 300 points. The going rate on the DVC rent/trade board appears to be $10 per point thus I would be paying $3000.00 for a 1 week stay in 2 BR unit at Old Key West in February, which is about $428.50 per night. Not exactly a bargain in my mind, especially when you can find some nice properties with 2 BR units off-site for $100.00 per night. I was even able to rent a 3 BR house with a heated pool a couple of years ago about 10 minutes from Disney for $750 for the week. Now I understand that many people miss the "Disney Magic" by staying off-site but is it really worth an extra $300 per night to stay on-site?
Now, if you compare the price of having 2 BR and 2 baths plus a full kitchen and living room on Disney property to the price of just a room at one of the deluxe resorts (Poly, GF, Contemp, Yacht and Beach) which will go for $300-$400 per night at that time, then this option does make more sense. It may also make more sense if you are looking to rent a studio in January (especially if you stay midweek and avoid the weekend which costs more points) but other than that, this just doesn't seem to be a great value to me unless you know of a way to pay less than $10 per point.
Just my 2 cents.
Ted

SusanB
09-28-2000, 03:59 PM
Ted makes a valid point; staying off site is certainly much cheaper. But, as my title indicates, I was referring to onsite stays. This won't be for everyone, but I was pleased with the deal I got and just wanted to share my thoughts on the process. For those trying to decide whether or not to do this, it's worth taking opposing thoughts into consideration too.

tedo_nh...Just like the other resorts, it all depends on when you go. They have different seasons also just like the value, regular, peak and holiday seasons. Also, when you rent points it's good to try to rent from a Sunday to a Thursday as friday and Saturday points are doubled! I'm going in December, rented points for 5 nights at OKW(2 bedroom) and am paying $1200. A pretty good bargain from where I'm sitting! I would have paid a little more than that with My MKC discount at PO for 2 rooms. But I got a whole lot more for my money. 2 bedrooms, 2 full baths(one with a whirpool tub), a full kitchen, a living room, and a whasher and dryer! You simply can't get a better deal on Property! For those of us who can't do Disney while staying off property this is an excelent way to go!

Of course the truly best deal, if you plan to go to Disney every year or even every other year, is to buy your own DVC points. I'm using mine this year to stay at BWV 2 bedroom unit for 7 nights. They go for something like $759 a night if I were to pay Disney. That's more than my yearly dues. I think all I had to take was 3 maybe it was 4 vacations before the payment for the points was made up and now I'm ahead every year I vacation until 2042. You can buy a resale and really do pretty well.

SusanB
09-29-2000, 02:37 PM
If you have details on how the resale thing works, please email me. I know they don't allow sales on this site, so please contact me directly if you can explain how this works. Thanks!

There's an area on the site dedicated to the DVC, go there and there's a link (I think) to the Timeshare Store, at least I'm sure there's information on how to get there. Let me know if you still can't find it. We bought ours through them and felt like we got a pretty good deal. It's great if you can find a resale with banked points.

Were you a bit leary when you decided to rent the points. I've been watching the DVC boards and the one thing I keep going back to is "what if". What if when you get there to check in, they have no idea who you are and what room you are talking about and what reservaton you are referring to. In other words, did you feel fairly confident that everything would work out OK?

I don't know if you found the information on the DVC resales, but we've all just found out that Disney is raising the price it sells the points at to $72 a point. So I assume the price of resales will also go up, so if your interested I'd check into it sooner than later.

I did hear that DVC point prices will increase in January. I also know that Disney controls the price of resales very effectively so there's no really super buys out there! I'm still pondering the purchase - thanks very much for the info, I do appreciate it!

We recently purchased one of the last point packages available for the Boardwalk(according to our guide) directly from Disney. While it WAS the right decision for us to purchase, some folks would just rather "rent" the points from other members to get nicer accomodations for a trip or two, for about the same amount of $$ as a moderate resort. I sure wish I had a clue about renting points for the 6 or 7 trips we took to WDW before purchasing! I, along with several people on the DVC rent/trade board, will have extra points this year, so check out that board if you think renting may work for you. I would be happy to share any info I have, as would most of the posters on that board. They are very knowledgeable! Hope to see ya there!

SusanB - if you aren't burned out with requests (!), I would also really appreciate info on renting points. Have never even hoped to stay at a DVC villa since there are 5 of us and we'd need a 2BR. Thanks in advance!

Why not just post your experiences with renting DVC Points here or on the the DVC Points for Rent Board?
I am sure that you have great info to share (and MUCH in demand as you see). You will reach a much larger "audience" by posting - you cannot believe what the ratio is between those who read and those who post. :)
I look forward to reading your information posted here.
Thanks! :)

Ebutte,

Don't know what you did in DVC Calculator but for those nights (9/15-9/20) would cost 52 points for an OKW studio. At $10/pt that would be $520. A 2-bedroom vacation home (master bedroom and bath, second bedroom with 2 queen beds and bath, living room, full kitchen, and laundry room) for those nights at OKW would only be 142 points. At $10/point that would be $1,420.

I am a DVC member and considering renting points in the near future.

To learn more about DVC and its resorts, you can check out Disney's website. To learn more about renting, the DVC Rent/Trade board here has a lot of information.

Hope this helps.

Lisa, typing in 9/15/01-9/20/01 on the calculator will give the points usage for 6 nights, check-in on Sat, check-out on Fri. What size unit are you seeking?

OKW studio is 60 pts, 1-BR is 120, 2-BR is 164.
BWV pref studio is 82, 1-BR is 155, 2-BR is 210.

Hope that helps. :)

A DVC rental is the best way to stay at Disney. How else can you stay in a super delux resort for about $100 a night with no tax????!!!!!

Everyone check this out!!!!!!!!!

Not to mention the DVC perks and Discounts!

...that you do not need to wait to for information to be e-mailed to you. You can get all of the information that you need and have all your questions answered at the DVC Trade/Rent Frequently Asked Questions (http://wdwinfo.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?q=Y&a=tpc&s=40009993&f=27009194&m=781092185). We have here at the DIS - an ENTIRE Discussion Board - the DVC Trade/Rent Board (http://wdwinfo.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?q=Y&a=frm&s=40009993&f=27009194).
Just hop over to these two places to find out all you want to know about Renting DVC Points.
Besides, it would save Susan LOTS of time! :D

If you can rent this many times, you should buy in. It is even cheaper over the long run and you get a Disney fix once or twice a year. We bought DVC 4 years ago, and really wish we would have done it sooner. We have saved so much this way.

Before renting, clarify if you as a non DVC member are eligable for "Perks and Discounts" as mentioned by DVC Rentman above. It is my understanding that unless you are a DVC member or a guest staying with a member that you DO NOT get any of the "perks or discounts". You also do not get daily room cleaning. I am not trying to discourage anyone from rentsing points, just make sure you have all the knoweldge andif you have questions go to the Rent/Trade forum and ask.
