Why are all the really great fares to Orlando coming out of Dallas and never Austin? It is making me crazy!!

Dallas is a hub. Austin has a lower population and a much smaller airport.

I know that doesn't fix your problem, but the good rates tend to come out of the "main" airports that get the most traffic.

I've often found cheaper fares from SAT and AUS to MCO than from DFW, I guess it depends on the season. In fact, although it didn't fit my travel dates, I saw Southwest flights from SAT to MCO for $127 round trip on their current specials.

I just checked southwest.com and they are offering 112 RT out of Austin. You might want to check it out...seems like a great deal to me.

I agree with Chuck - I hardly ever find good airfare from Dallas. I got VERY lucky last month and got a great deal to Orlando for March 2002 on Delta but this is a first for us. I think the Wright Amendment here, which prohibits us from flying on SWA directly to states that do not adjoin Texas, keeps us from having as many competitive fares - the other airlines don't have SWA's great fares to compete with and so they offer fewer bargain fares.

I have considered traveling out of Austin for a great fare but it would have to be really great to justify the drive to and from.

Glad you found some great fares with SWA out of Austin - enjoy your trip!!

I was screaming and jumping for joy when I got DFW to MCO for $114.00 RT for Delta non-stop for our October trip.
We were completely prepared to drive and even bought a new Yukon XL w/ the VCP etc. to make drive more comfortable. I was kind of dreading the drive because there are 6 of us and the youngest will barely be 2. Not too much fun getting stuck in a carseat for 20 hours min. even if Pooh is on TV.
I just happened to catch it perfectly and get all 6 tickets for less than $700.00. We figured after we stop for the night it was going to probably come out about the same or just a little bit higher.
I am doing the extremely happy dance!!!!!

Wow! How, when, and where did you get that fare on Delta? We're going in October and the best I've found is $214 on Airtran with a layover in Atlanta. Of course, since we don't have a Saturday night stay, we are limited in our options.

I got it 2 weeks ago.
One of those things - Right place/Right time.
A friend here at work knew I had been kind of looking and she advised me to take a look at the fares that day. I always use ITAsoftware.com and saw $168.00 RT leaving at 7:30opm 10/20 and arriving at 11:30pm. Bad deal w/ 2 little kids so I backed it up a day to see what the 19th looked like and there it was... $125.00. we ended up getting $114.00 because our parents are seniors and each can take 1 at their rate as well.
I think I got the last of that rate because I checked the next day and it was over $200.00 for the same flight.
I paid $185.00 last early Dec. and was pretty happy to get that!

If you DO find a great deal out of San Antonio, the long-term shuttle parking at the airport is a BARGAIN - only $4.00/day and much less of a hassle than the newly built l/t parking garage which has no shuttle and is $7.00/day. The biggest difference between the two is the new one is covered.

VivkiVM, There is also Airport Security Park at SAT. They are across the 410 fromthe airport and have covered parking for about $7 a day with shuttle. There is always a coupon for 1 free day in the Sunday Express News travel & leisure section. With summer temps at 100+ I opt to spend the extra for covered parking, I hate getting into a car that feels like it set to Self Clean.

I just checked my flight on Oct 2 and was quite surprised:

San Antonio to DFW to Orlando : $149
DFW to Orlando: $198
Austin to DFW to ORlando: $116!!

The flight is the exact same from DFW, but look at the price differences...this time Austin have the best deal.
