ok, this I may be able to stick with! You've heard of Yo-Yo dieting? Well I think I am a bouncing ball! I don't stop dieting, I just keep changing plans! I'm suremy poor body is totally confused.

Looks like I have about 640 miles to do. Anyone made it to the NC area? We can virtually walk together :cheer2:

So this will be interesting. The way I am progressing, I should be just outside of Columbia, SC the 4th week of July which is when I will be moving to Charleston. So it looks like for the first month after that I will sort of be walking backwards :rotfl:

Ugh. I have been so un-motivated for the past week. I haven't felt like walking or exercising since early last week.

I forgot to clip my pedometer on Saturday when we went to Washington DC. I don't know how much walking we did at the Dulles Air & Space Museum or how far it was from the WWII Memorial to the American Indian Museum.

Hopefully I can kickstart the walking and exercise routines again tomorrow.

Well, I'm off to a slow start, only 4/1314 miles. I have decided that I am going to pay myself for each mile walked. That way, when I get there, I won't have to worry about saving for the trip as well. At the end of each week I will transfer the number of miles walked X $4Cdn into a separate bank account. I think this will be motivating to watch my Disney account grow as I get closer.

Sounds like a great day. Here is a recommendation: I can walk a mile at a slow but consistant pace of 20 minutes per mile. When I work out (karate) I estimate 20 minutes of activity equals at least a mile. Why don't you estimate the time you were walking at a consistant pace and take credit for the miles you walked.

That's my normal thought process, but due to the nature of our walking I don't think I could calculate it. I could probably find the distance from the WWII Memorial to the American Indian Museum, but then there's the Air & Space Museums (both DC and Dulles).

Well I can add another 26 miles on to my list. Over the 4 days that I was at WDW this past week I logged 26 miles on my pedometer. But I ate so much I feel like I need to walk another 26 just to get rid of what I ate.

Hi! :wave2:

I just found this thread and I'd love to try it. I couldn't get the address for POP to work, so I am just using the WDWResort as my destination. It's 970.13 miles and I've got 132 days to do it. I've been walking at the gym on the treadmill, but I'm going to have to step it up a bit.

Thanks for all the inspiration :cheer2: on this board. I'll be coming back between now and October for encouragement and inspiration. My goal is to be in a size 16 before October. I'm almost in an 18 now!

Hi~

Hoping I can join this challenge. I have just started exercising/walking again and it's very hard for me to stay motivated. But anything to do with Disney....that keeps me motivated! I will be wlking from central Wisconsin to the Beach Club Villas ~ a total of 1396 miles. I am starting out slow, walking 1.5 miles/day. So far I have 3 miles in! BTW, does anyone have a tracking spreadsheet they can share?

Well, I made it to Virginia...it's taken me 3 months to walk 151.85 miles. Currently "I'm on 495 approaching the merge with 95 & 395". If I make a left turn ahead I'll be on 95 and heading due south towards FLORIDA. :cool1:

This week was low for miles due to the high heat and humidity for early June. Plus I just didn't find time to get in any "extra" walking over lunch or in the evening. The 10 miles I logged this week were just that of the small amount of walking I do regularly during working hours and some shopping at Target and the grocery store.

Tomorrow I will begin tracking my steps as well for the Walking Works program that was started at work. It's just a group of employees who want to walk for wellness, and the challenge is individual to do your personal best and equal or better it each of the 12 weeks. The program is sponsored by our health insurance provider - Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

Am going to be going to Disney in a few days so I can check the milage then
since I am driving down. I believe its in the 90s, but I guess that all depends on where I measure to. Since most of the times I go, I stay at Port Orleans Riverside, I will use that. Definitely will let you all know if I decide to do this and how far. It looks as if there is some good support and I need that (sometimes more than I KNOW!) So, when next weekend comes, I will come back and have a goal in mind for weight too! I miss my old clothes. Thanks to Chrismiss56 for reply back and telling me where to find this info! :earboy2:

I've completed my 15th week of walking on 6/18. Point 16 on my map is at mile 168.91, on I95 just south of exit 161 and Route 611, near Woodbridge in Virginia. I'm hoping I can make it beyond Fredericksburg this week.

Last week the Walking Works program started at work. I've begun logging my steps as well as my miles for this program. I wear my pedometer all day M-F now, but only when I go outdoors on the weekends. My steps last week added up to 36,193 in 6 days.

I started walking to Disney in April only to run into a chaotic May and June. Between meetings and other professional duties and a widsom tooth extraction (thank God for Lortab!!) I got very few miles recorded and virtually no weight lost. :( I need to get in all the miles I can before mid-July when the schedule goes crazy again. I'm still looking at a Halloween trip to WDW and DCL-Wonder. :boat: But, if I can get my kids (DS-20, DD-12) after Christmas I might have to reschedule in favor of a WDW-only trip with them the first week of January 2006.

It's a virtual walk in that you don't physically leave home and reach your destination. In actuality we are walking and keeping track of the miles as a goal to keep ourselves motivated.

Walking to Disney Challenge:
1. Measure the distance from home to WDW (or any destination). If you want, figure out if you can make the distance in the time before your next scheduled visit and make it your goal to walk to full distance before you arrive.
2. Walk - on a treadmill, about the neighborhood or mall, etc.
3. Track your progress en route to your "destination". You don't need to have a map, I keep an Excel spreadsheet with each day's mileage and a total.

Some folks are rewarding themselves by paying for each mile walked. A nice incentive to save for a real trip to WDW.

Still cool, but would have been cooler if you were actually walking! My buddy rode his bike from Philly to WDW several years ago. Took 15 days.

Hi Ladies,

Well I was only able to add 1.6 miles to my walk. My 10 month old daughter decided that she wanted to bond this morning at 3:45am. I got her back into bed at 4:45am, and was in no way ready to walk. I just got back from the park with kids where I did walk 1.6 miles. It is so hot and muggy here, I was trying to walk more but the kids were getting really hot.

Tomorrow is another day, hopefully I will get out and add another 3 miles.

Have a great day ladies.

Alrighty! School's out and all those endofyear interruptions from RL are over. Time to get crackin' I've tallied up the past three weeks (not good) and edited the siggie. I am in Michigan on I-75 at mile marker 34.5. I'd like to be out of Michigan and into Ohio by the 15th of July. Can I do it? We shall see. I've not been good at challenging myself (not counting the WDW ½ Marathon!) for over a year now, so it will be hard. I think I can, I think I can....

It's 3,083 miles from my house to Beach Club Villas. I'm planning to go in November and don't think there's much chance of me walking it by then - but it'll be fun to see how far I get.

I'm going to order a trip-tik from AAA and track my miles on it. I plan to use a pedometer and will keep track of all the miles I walk - I need every mile I can get!

Great idea! I read the thread from the beginning tonight. It was great to see the progress you are all making. And I like the idea of paying yourself for each mile too. If I do that I'll have qite a little stash of pocket change when I finally arrive!

See you on the road...Barrie

I love that I am able to be outdoors! This is the best season. I have a new toy to play with as I am walking to help me measure my outdoor path. I am using the Garmin Forerunner 201. I won't be enjoying my trekking at all once the Winter forces me indoors.

I think I will be needing new shoes soon.

I have been wanting to join this challenge for months but I was preg. when it started and have just now been able to get back into the habit of working out. (DD is 2 months old now!) So, I started Mon. I am walking to ASMo since that is where we stayed on our last vacation. I have to walk 722.32 miles to get there which isn't nearly as far as some of you have to walk! So far I have walked 3 miles since Monday and hope to walk more today. Maybe I'll be there by the time my next vacation rolls around in the beginning of May...although I seriously doubt it! I started out counting only the "extra" walking, going for walks over lunch and in the evening. When we started the Walking Works at work and I started wearing a pedometer all day long.

First, go to www.mapquest.com
Under directions type your address for the starting address. Type in GF's address for the ending address. The address to GF is:
4401 Floridian Way
Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830
Click Get Directions.
It will give you a breakdown of how to get there and at the bottom it will give you the total # of miles. Hope this helps!

Thank You So Very Much. That helped me out very much. I've got alot of walking to do.

Have A Disney Day!!!

I personally count all walking. I wear a pedometer all day long (from the moment I get out of bed to the moment I get into bed). I make it my goal to do 10,000 to 12,000 steps every single day which also helps me lose weight. So since I try to meet that goal every day, I figure I can help stay motivated by counting it as my walk to Disney.

Any other swimmers? Want a SWIM TO DISNEY CHALLENGE????

I can't jog or walk because of shin splints. I love to swim laps (used to swim in HS and a little in college). Anyone else swimming to Disney? Is there a swimming challenge anywhere?

It's 460 miles from my house to Disney. No way to swim that far by December, so my goal is to swim 10% of that amount or 46 miles by Nov 29. So far I'm at 1/46

We could use this as our clip art.

I am pretty psyched to see myself getting closer to WDW, even though I am covering fewer miles now that I am walking outside in this ugly weather! ;) I am now at 503/992 miles. That probably puts me somewhere in the carolinas, though I am at a complete loss on how to figure that out at this point! :)

 WELCOME NEWBIES!!!!

I've been in the Walking to Disney Challenge since 3/7/05. To date I have walked 243.62 miles, or the distance from Reading, PA to Richmond, VA.

My progress has yielded about a 7-8 pound weightloss. I also try to fit in a few 10 Minute Solution workouts and in June started watching my calorie intake.

Good luck to all of you!

:wave2: Hi iNTeNSeBLue98 and everyone else. I haven't checked in for a l-o-n-g time, but I still am doing my thing. . . it's just been slow and in teeny, tiny steps for the past few months. BUT, I'm determined to get back on track. I've done more in the past 5 days than I did all of June or July. I've made it to the Michigan and Ohio border and I am so excited that I've made it this far!

I'm by-passing Richmond Virginia and should be to the North Carolina state line in about two weeks, on my current walking trend. It's 27 miles from the point I've reached in VA (near the Richmond Int. Airport) to Ricky Mount, NC.

Hi all - I'm still walking. I spent the last 5 weeks working on a music festival in Michigan. I tracked my miles everyday. My average was 6.41 miles per day, with some days as much as 10 miles. My current total is 248 - only 2835 miles to go!

Now that I am home again, I am hoping to walk at least 5 miles per day - which is double what I was doing before I left. I noticed that some of you have logged MANY miles - how much do you walk in a day? How do you accomplish it?

I guess it really isnt motivation... its just time after a busy day at work
and all the things you have to do to keep your home (ones other job)
functioning!

I will do this!
Congrats to those who are doing well and those who are struggling... you can do it!!! Afterall, your going to Disney World!

Hi everyone! I originally posted back in June and got off to a pretty slow start. Without a trip booked, I had a hard time getting motivated.
I finally convinced my DH that I needed a tangible goal. If I walk 500 miles by Dec 31st, we will book a trip for this time Aug 2006. DH was a bit skeptical at first, but as he's seen my progress and determination thus far, he's pretty sure we're going. The kids, of course, are cheering me on!
I've figured out that I need to walk approx 3.5 miles on the treadmill every day. I've been trying to do 5 miles a day because I know there will be days that I won't be able to get on the treadmill.

Anyways, I've been following this thread and it's amazing to see the progress so many of you have made!

I've got my passport ready - I'll be crossing the border some time next week!

Wowzers, it's 1439.3 miles from my home to the Contemporary (where I want to stay, but no reservations yet.) So I'll adjust it when the reservations are made. And my DS and FBIL haven't got the wedding date set yet, so I'll just figure 38 weeks til then. So I'll walk 6 days a week (along with doing the FIRM), and it'll have to be 6 miles four days, and seven miles 2 days. . .oh my!!! Well it'll cut down on the time I have to mindlessly snack :) I'm gonna try real hard!!

This is a fun thread. I would like to join everyone on the walk to Disney. I will be starting off from Southern NH and walking to BWV. Total distance: 1345.2! Start Date: August 26, 2005

Wow!! This will take me awhile, but when I'm done I'll be at my favorite place! I will be counting walking outside and then when winter closes in I will use any time I spend on the treadmill/bikes at the gym. :sunny:

Gee, I just stumbled across this thread (heck, I just stumbled across WISH a couple days ago), and I think it's a fab idea. At a former workplace of mine in North Jersey, we used to do a similarly-themed "Race to the Beach" in the summer. Of course, I've let myself go way too much since those days, and I really, really need to start doing something.
I've committed to "Five for September" and "Lighter for Halloween" thus far, and I think this would be a great way to help keep my interest in walking everyday. I think it's 96 days or so until we next leave for WDW, and I think that's a nice time frame to have a new go at a healthier lifestyle.
Of course, I just looked up the mileage from my home in scenic Reading, PA (yes, we have a pagoda; no, there's no real reason for it, other than somebody in the 1920s thought it would be a good idea for a restaurant...) to the AKL, where we're styaing this trip. 1029 miles. I'd have to walk 10.7 miles a day between now and departure date to get there. Yoi. Don't quite know if I'm up for that, but we'll give it the old PSU try. :paw: :paw: :paw:
Wish me luck...

I had posted a couple weeks ago that I just cant get motivated or something.... and then a little more than a week ago... i get in a car accident and things are now even more crazy for me. I normally have to use my car for work, but on days im not going to physical therapy, or covering for a coworker, I can walk to the office, since I am bound to working in there vs out in field. Its just under a mile, maybe I can do this! and there is a slight incline going to office and a larger one coming home.

Here's a bump...

I realized that I was wearing my pedometer in the wrong place - a little too far to the side. I had been taking 1 hour walks everyday and ending the day with fewer than 10,000 steps. That was pretty frustrating! It's much better now that I've been wearing it correctly - I'm averaging about 5 miles per day and my total is now 330 miles!

Thanks Sunny. Congrats on reaching 800 miles!

I don't think I've made it to NC because it's just been too darn hot and humid and I haven't been motivated like I had been at the beginning of the challenge. I am looking forward to cooler days and adding to those miles in the days and weeks ahead.

I'm walking to Disneyland since I live so close to WDW and besides we have a trip planned to DL next year anyway. I have not updated in a really long time, so I'm absolutely amazed at how far I have gone! When I last updated on May 6, I had gone 130 miles out of 2465, and was still in FL.

I have now gone 798/2465 miles and I'm just east of Houston, TX!!! WOW, I can't believe how far I have gone.

I have been counting my walking, occasional wogging, bike riding, and swimming towards my total miles covered. At this rate, I might actually get there in time for our anniversary trip in Sept! Sorry the map is so big but I have absolutely no idea how to make it smaller. I'm surprised I was able to get it in the post in the first place!

Ashley, it's never too late to join in! Some of us - like me - will be here walking for a very long time. We'd love to have you join us on our journey!

Thanks, guys :grouphug:

Debbie: A buckeye is many things. I'm not a native Ohioian, I was only there briefly but I learned real quick what a buckeye is :teeth: Most importantly, a buckey is a peanut butter ball dipped in chocolate with just a little spot of peanut butter showing. It is made to look like the buckey seed (? not sure that is the right term) which looks like a chestnut but iwth a little light brown spot and comes from the buckeye tree. A buckeye is also an OSU football team!!!! We really learned this living just a mile from OSU. We also learned real quickly not to wear blue and yellow together while we lived there :rotfl2:

Lily probably would do a much better job at describing buckeyes!!!!
