Just got done watching Great Hotels with AKL since I had to TiVo it! I know I stayed there last year but watching it made me really excited!! I am getting closer and closer to my 1 month mark. I think when I get back I am going to have to join ZDA also! Last year I didn't try the Zebra Domes until the night before we left but luckily we are doing the culinary tour and eating at Boma's the day we arrive, I can't wait!

MATTNASH:: I hear ya on the conceirge....I'd love to try one day, we'll see how our 1st visit at AKL pans out...we're so excited! It is quite pricey for WDW conceirge service, we stayed at GFC once in Dec. of '04 and IMHO, it wasn't really worth it. It was WAY expensive...but we had a grand time anyways. Christmas in WDW resorts are breath-taking huh? We skipped last Christmas b/c I was pregnant w/ our little one, but we used to go in Dec. and it was our favorite time to visit. So we're looking forward to visiting AKL!!! WOO HOO!!!!

This is terrible, but I didn't write down what it was (too much of the :drinking1 and domes will do that to you!). It is something that had the blue contrieau in it though...look for that on the drink menu and you will know what I had. Otherwise I can report back on what it was after my next visit.

Well guys, my TiVo failed me. Travel Channel didn't record AKL for me. We're doing construction in my house and we had to move our TV to another room with only one satellite feed instead of the usual two. So for some reason it didn't record. :guilty:
But, I did notice that May 1 is the Beach/Yacht Club and on May 3 is WL! :goodvibes

Am I correct in understandng that the show was made in 2001? I agree its time for them to do a new one 2006 five years later!

(Is it my imagination or is AKL getting a little more (gulp) popular? (Which is good and bad depending on how you look at it...I just feel it seems to be getting more play...or am I just noticing it more because I have "discovered" it  -kind of the way expectant mothers start noticing all the babies around them?

Hey everyone.
I finally took your advice and made my PS for Boma breakfast for our resort day. We will also be doing Jiko that night. The CM seemed to sound like I really had my choice of times.
But as everyone said it's good to not have to worry.

When my DD6 watched the show with me yesterday she was screaming "Oh My Goodness I don't believe we're going to live there for a week!" She then went on to tell me that she was so excited to be staying there. She remembers eating there. Boma is a must do for our trips but she didn't realize it was a hotel too!

tinknme
04-26-2006, 03:31 PM
We took our own coffee & filters(small ones). Our coffee maker was not working very well so they brought us up a new one. All it needed was to be cleaned. The cm said that they have to throw them away because some of the animals freak out when they smell vinegar. Anyone else hear this?

It was only a 1/2 hour and nothing to write home about. We will be visiting AKL for the first time in about 2 weeks so I was excited to catch the show.

It wasn't anything I hadn't seen here or on the Disney website. Well except that they showed the 2 br suite and the top suite..whatever it's called.

They did show the host eating at Jiko and I have to say for an 11:30am show east coast..it was making me hungry.

I'm getting pretty excited now. Just started picking up some essentials. Glow stick bracelets at the $$ store and fan misters at Walmart. I heard it's hot in Fl now. How far ahead does everyone pack?

Oh..and can you join the zebra domes group without every having tried one? I love chocolate so I think I'm already hooked.

We are planning on spending a day at the resort during our trip in Nov/Dec. My youngest is going to need some down time and I want to explore as much of the resort as possible during our stay. I am planning plenty of rest time at the resort during our entire stay but plan on spending one full day there before the MVMCP at night.

We were originally going to stay at this hotel back in 2002 and I regret that we didn't at the time so this trip we are staying here. I can't wait.

First, Congratulations! Walt Disney World, what a wonderful place to celebrate your marrage and spend your first days as husband and wife. :) I would right now call Disney and have the CM add a request to your ressie for a King bed and ask them nicely to add on that it is your honeymoon. The room assigners work up the rooms about 3-5 days in advance. Hopefully they will note your request and that your on your honeymoon. pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: Disney really does try to honor our request whenever they can. My experience with Animal Kingdom Lodge is they have always given my DH and myself our requested bedding, room location and view. I hope you have a wonderful trip. Be sure to come back here and let us know how everything went. You are going to LOVE AKL.

But remember, back away from the Zebra Doms. ;)

Best Wishes,

Wow you guys make this place sound just awesome! I am planning a split stay Swan/AKL on September and I can't wait! I have never been to AKL and am a "zebra dome virgin". But I am sure that it won't take me long to be hooked-they look amazing! What are they filled with? Solid chocolate? yummy!
Also, I had a quick question about the room. I am staying standard savannah view and my cm requested the "giraffe paddock" for me. Where is this? What other animals typically hang out there?
Thanks so much for this thread-it is such a wealth of information!

hey - thanks for posting the storytelling but is that since the time change? The sun doesn't set here until like 8 or so....so I was thinking it would be a tad later??

Also, we have a std room, but would like to be higher than the first floor...is that possible?

Activity times change with the seasons. Concierge CM's have advised us to check the board at the front of the resort or call the front desk for exact times and activities offered. There are sometimes little surprises that take place in the resort. Last fall they had a special visiting group from Africia who danced and sang. They performed twice during our week visit.

The storytelling around the fire pit has always been after sundown during our visits. So the time I am sure would change with the different times of year.

Lillygator - The standard rooms are on the first four floors, so you may be assigned a room up higher. You do not have to worry about being on the first floor. The resort is built with the lobby being raised above the first floor level and there are not any rooms on the lobby level.

I have never had the time to attend either the cookie decorating or the culinary tour. Sorry. But, I am sure someone will be along shortly with an answer. :sunny:

No problem!!! I just wanted to give her credit......... I "took" it from her to post again!!!! Also, once you get to the resort, check the activities board near the front desk, it will give all the current times of the activities!! Have fun!!

I believe all the rooms do have balconies, so no, you can't walk out or off of it. However, you may get a "parking lot" view........... BUT, you can call and have it noted on your reservation that you'd like to be on a certain floor.......... I booked standard in Jan./Feb. and requested the 3rd or 4th floor. I also requested a non-smoking bunk bed room......... we got everything we requested and more!!!! We were complimentary upgraded to a deluxe bunk bed savannah view!!!!!!!! We didn't even ask!!!!! ( How's that for pixie dust!!) I'd advise you to call and have any request noted on your reservation. It isn't guaranteed, but it never hurts, and they really do try to accomodate you

It was magical and we totally fell in love with the resort. Good Luck, but, do call and have all your request noted.

We will be Disneymooning from May 14-21. Can you believe it? Only 17 days until we are at AKL!! We are in a standard room but I really want to have a room with a king bed. Should I just tell them when I check-in? I wish so much that we would be upgraded to a Savannah view! That does happen right?
I wanted to share my happiness with everyone and if anybody has suggestions or tips about AKL or Disney for honeymooners please let me know!!
We are eating at Boma for the first time on May 14th!! I have to have one of those Zebra Domes!! I'm a sweets fanatic! I hope everyone has fun on their trips. :cloud9:

Congratulations!!!! Call and have it noted on your reservation that it is your honeymoon, also make a request for a room with a king bed. Any request you have, you should have noted on your reservation!!!! Good Luck ~ Happy Honeymoon!!!! :wizard:

Does anyone know if the cookie decorating is just for kids? Or is it for kids and their parents? I'm going to be at AKL solo, but if it's for kids and their parents, I may see if I can be an "honorary parent" for a day. I'd love to do this!

DD8, DW, and I went to the cookie decorating. DD8 jumped right in, and started decorating. The hostess then encouraged Mom and Dad to decorate cookies, too! It was fun. They had a tray of cookies, along with numerous toppings including gummi bears, sprinkles, etc.

Enjoy being an "Honorary Parent" and cookie decorator!

Hi. I will be at AKL in just 15 days - I am so excited!! I am working my way through this forum (up to page 41) and just wanted to say thanks for all the good info and pics. I have a question that I'm sure has already been answered, but it may take me days to find it, so can you please answer it for me.

The question . . . How long does the culinary tour last? It starts at 4pm correct? I'm just trying to figure if I have time for it before my ADR that night.

Thanks

Hi everyone,
This will bump us up.
Does anyone have a reccomendation for which number is best to call to ask for room preferences? When I called to ask for some requests I forgot when I made my ressie, the CM seemed slightly bothered by it.
I asked for non-smoking, bunk beds and a crib(didn't know pack-n-plays were in the rooms). All which seemed pretty important to me to have on my ressie.
I'm not sure why she seemed bothered. I'd like to add a little more since everyone says they try to be accomodating.
We have a standard savvannah room booked. I was thinking about adding close to lobby. With 3 kids under 6 it'll be easier after the parks if we have a short trip to the room. What do you guys think?

Good luck kimmar, keeping all parts crossed LOL... :thumbsup2

I know I read somewhere that you can get turn down service in stardand savannah view for an extra $5 a night... My DD who is 11 thinks turndown is absolutely the unlitmate princess: Do you just request upon arrival?

Also, I've been working on my itinerary and I would really like to spend more time than previously in the Animal Kingdom (especially since we're staying in the Lodge...
Can't let the page fall...........

How do the rest of you split your time between the parks? We'll be there for 7nights, but our first afternoon/night I don't think we'll do a park at all-just probably hang out at the Lodge-the same the morning of our departure. eat breakfast at Boma, etc....We've never done more than one day at Animal Kingdom but now with Everest and if we do a Character Meal at Donalds...?

For our full six days I was thinking about going to MGM and Epcot each one day and splitting the other 4 days between the Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom including the MVMCP....

Hey, also when it gets closer I plan to do a Disney Film Fest for my kids focusing particulary on AK related films, ie, Lion King (of course), Tazan, Bugs Life, Jungle Book even though its India, it ties into the park, any other ideas?

Patricia

We stayed in a Std Pool View room last year, and there was no extra charge for turn down service. Upon arrival simply call "Mousekeeping" and request turn down. I had to wrestle DD8 for the chocolates they left on the pillow! Sometimes I even won!

Hey Patrica,

I have the hardest time trying to decide where I'm going to spend my park days. I have TGM which is a godsend (I think I have seen you over there as well?!?!), but I'm always so wishy washy. Anyways I agree with you about spending more time at AK. Last fall I spent 2 days at AK and there was so much to see and take in for me I loved it. Of course I think MK always gets most of my days and MGM and Epcot fall about even with AK last.

As far as having only 1 day at MGM and Epcot...maybe you could consider a full AK day and then head back at Epcot in the evening and enjoy some of the world showcase area more(If you like Epcot). I think my plan would look like this:

1 day MGM
1.5 days AK
1.5 days Epcot
2 days MK

I love breakfast at Boma on departure day it is a great way to end a trip to WDW. Happy planning :goodvibes

What should I expect when I arrive?
Lots of ohhs and ahhs because it is so gorgeous.
Will they take my luggage?
Yes somone will come up with a luggage cart and take your luggage and give you a ticket for it.
Will they take my car or can I self park?
You can do valet or self-park your car.
I would appreciate info on this and what kind of tipping is expected for different services. I guess I'd rather sound stupid here, than look stupid when I arrive. TIA
Never a stupid question. I tip $1 per bag unless it is a heavy bag then $2 a bag. If I have grocery bags I usually lump those as 2 bags=$1. Whenever I have tried to tip the CM who takes the luggage from the towncar (as I don't rent a car at WDW) they always say to give it to the person who takes it to my room (had this happen the past 3 trips(not all at AKL though)). So I think I usually end up tipping bell services around $8-10 or so for luggage. Housekeeping I tip $2 a night if it is just me and more if I'm staying with others.

OK, everyone..... well we just got back yesterday from our WAY too short first trip to AKL. We fell in Love. I was so afraid to get my hopes up about this resort, because the last time I did that was Wilderness Lodge and I was horribly disappointed. However, everything about this stay was AMAZING!! Our room had a view of the Arusha Rock, which was gorgeous. My son absolutely loved it all. I am planning on doing a trip report and will let you guys know when I have started posting it. In the meantime just wanted to share some of my photos. Some of them are from Animal Kingdom and Epcot, but there are quit a few from AKL. Hope you enjoy!!

What should I expect when I arrive?

When you drive up, they will meet you at your car and unload your bags onto a cart. You can either park yourself or use valet. If you use valet, you can walk in with the CM, tip him accordingly, usually $1-2 per bag. Then proceed to the front desk to check-in. If you park yourself, they'll take your bags into the lobby for you. If your room is not ready it is not a problem, they have a room next to bell services for storing luggage.

Will they take my luggage? See above!!

Will they take my car or can I self park? See above!!

what kind of tipping is expected for different services.

When you go to your room, if it is ready or not, usually there is another CM who escorts you, we always tip him as well, about $5.00, or again $1-2 per bag. We've never had the same CM bring our luggage out of the car/into the resort, then to our room. So, we tip both.

As for "Mousekeeping" - my DS makes mousekeeping envelopes and we tip $3.00 per day, as there are 3 of us. We tip each day since you may not get the same mousekeeper each day. ( Some people tip at the end of thier stay, if you do it this way, you have no way of knowing that the person who took care of you gets the tip.)

The CM's at check-in (and throughout your stay) will be very generous to you, they'll guide you where you need to be and what you need to do......... when you get there don't be worried, just tell them you've never been there before and they'll need to "show you the way"........... I was worried too the first we ever stayed deluxe........ but, really, it's like a well oiled machine and they'll make sure your taken care of!!! Have a great time!!!!

I love your AKL design. I'm sure it will look great on a large tote. Make sure you fill it up at the Zawadi Marketplace.

Just stopping in to say that my lovely olive IPO envelope arrived yesterday. I felt so special! :flower1:

There is a listing of the daytime activities, but not a time schedule. :confused3 I guess we'll all just have to check the board in the lobby when we get there so we don't miss any of the wonderful offerings.

What is the olive IPO envelope? :confused3

I believe all the rooms do have balconies, so no, you can't walk out or off of it. However, you may get a "parking lot" view........... BUT, you can call and have it noted on your reservation that you'd like to be on a certain floor.........

....yes, all the rooms do have a balcony, with the exception of the 1st floor "Pool View" rooms, since they open out directly to the pool area...

There is no charge for turndown service. It automatically comes with concierge rooms. If you want turndown service for one night or your whole stay, just call Mousekeeping and request it. I usually leave $1 a bed for the maid who handles this service.

We have visited the resort before and eaten at BOMA but I can't believe that we will actually be staying there--it is so beautiful! Anyone have any advice on how to handle August heat? Splashmom, I completely understand your concern about the heat. Were we live we are use to the heat, but not the humidity. We have never gone in August, but late September was pretty intense last year. This is what we did:

Be sure to wear a hat and sunglasses and use suncreen.

We purchaes the insullated water bottle holders, which have a zipper closer and a strap to make it easier to carry. We put the water bottle in the very top of the room frig and it would get a bit frozen. We also would add ice water from any CS place. They will give you a cup of water at no charge. So we would order an item and water. :)

Go early in the day then head back to the resort for a swim, nap or just enjoy the resort. We love Animal Kingdom Lodge because there is so much to see without going outside in the heat. :thumbsup2 We would then head back to the parks in the late afternoon for a sit-down dinner then enjoy the cooler evening hours.

Another idea was to head to one of the large Epcot areas inside. One of our favoites is The Living Seas or Innoventions. We save those for either the heat or rain.

My DH has a health issue that requires him to not get over-heated, so we purchases one of the neck wraps which you soak in cold water then place around your neck. That with a hat and sunglasses really helped him. Also, look for shade whenever possible while wating.

If you plan your days it really isn't that bad. Just remember to take breaks and if you get over-heated go into an air conditioned area or at least shade. Remember to keep hydrated and that means water or a sports drink. You are going to LOVE AKL :cool1:

Kimmar...I had no idea you started that great thread on the Community Board! It was GREAT! :teeth: THANK YOU!!!

SplashMom...I understand your concerns about August heat. We've been there May, June, July, August, and September and experienced the heat. Here are a few of my suggestions:

1. Drink lots of water on a regular basis. Take along water bottles, and keep yourself hydrated. Even if you're not really thirsty...take a drink. When you're really thirsty it's too late. At that point you're already working on dehydration.

2. Hats...wide brims if possible. Keeps your face shaded and cooler.

3. Sunscreen...use lots. Protect your skin from the sun.

4. Midday breaks at AKL...use the pool...hot tubs are in a shaded area...and enjoy the many activities that are inside the air conditioned lodge such as cookie decorating, etc.

So tell me more about turn down service, please.

Upon arrival call Mousekeeping and request turndown service. Each evening Mousekeeping will come to your room and "tidy up", turn down your bed, and place a delicous foil wrapped chocolate on your pillow. At AKL they also will lay an "African Proverb" card on the bedside table. We had quite a collection by the end of the week! We tip extra for this service. As of last December there was no extra charge, however, things might have changed. Also, concierge automatically gets turndown service. Non-concierge rooms are not guarateed "turndown". If for some reason, Mousekeeping is too busy, non concierge rooms may not recieve this service. However, rarely have we been missed (includes stays at CR, WL, BC)

The "Girl" is the photographer. I was actually telling DH when we got home that I am going to have to buy him his own camera so that there might actually be some pictures of me every once in a while.
I know the feeling. I would have to hire a photographer to get in any pictures.

Scoutsmom99,

I love your AKL design. I'm sure it will look great on a large tote. Make sure you fill it up at the Zawadi Marketplace.

I think that could be easily done! I love the Zawadi Marketplace. I wish I could afford some of the grogeous prints they have in there.

HELLO! I just got back last night from our week at Animal Kingdom Lodge and I had to say "THANK YOU!" I switched my ressies from POFQ to AKL based largely on the wonderful reviews and pictures in this thread, and I am so, so happy we did. What a week, what a trip. I can't wait to share pictures with you all.

Welcome back!! It sounds like you had a great trip. I can't wait to see some pictures from AKL

You have gotten some great advice so I thought I would just add on to the others.
-Stay hydrated at all times by drinking lots of water
-Use sunscreen liberally and make sure to re-apply. In June 01 I was at TL for the afternoon and I only put sunscreen on once (spf 45) and by that night I had 1st degree burns on my shoulders. It was terrible...thank goodness i was leaving 2 days later, but I couldn't even carry my backpack it hurt so much.
-Aloe Vera just in case you get some sun
-Mini Fans (find these at dollar stores) or the Misty spray fans they sell at WDW are great if you need a qucik cool down
-Afternoon swims/rests are always helpful
-Carry a washcloth with you at the parks if you are using a backpack or larger bag and put some cool water on it than use it to help cool yourself down (ie on face or neck).

Your photos of the Bats was exceptional. I haven't ever seen them with their wings open. :thumbsup2 I had to call my DH over to see your shot of the eagle (his favorite), plus your furry family album. Yes, I knew I really liked you, a fellow dog lover :) We have three ourselves and have raised Shelties in the past.

Your album was a Sunday afternoon vacation to WDW for me thank you again.

Angel,
The picture of the bats, they're not REAL bats!! They are hanging from the ceiling where the real bats are!! My husband's favorite birds are the eagles too, that's why I had to take a picture of them. And thank you so much for the compliments about my photos.

Speaking of info...can anyone tell me how long the culinary tour lasts? I know it starts at 4 but when does it end?

Quite the active little thread here. :teeth: Nice to see someone else from Virginia, too. I'm from the Richmond area.

Anyway, the other poster is correct. Sunrise Safari is Sunday and Thursdays. It begins at 7 a.m. I know it's bright and early but I hear it's worth it. I have it booked for our post cruise trip unless DH really digs his heels in about getting up so early since we have a late afternoon flight home. He's going to pooped after this vacation. :rotfl2:

Princess Mindy - I think the culinary tour was about an hour when we did it. YUM! You're going to love this place. It's our favorite resort for relaxation. :thumbsup2 Our shoulders begin to get all mushy right after we walk through the entrance doors. I can still smell Jiko's. :cloud9:

That's too funny that we've all bumped into each other here.

IMN2DSNY - If you stay deluxe you have to really to hang out a bit to get the full effect. I think sometimes people are disappointed with it because they didn't schedule time at the resort to enjoy it after spending quite a bit of money. I could be wrong, but it's JMHO.

My boys are 2nd guessing AKL with sunrise safari. They really don't want to get up that early. DH is saying maybe giving WL another try or go to CR atrium or 14th floor for the cupcakes. Oh, no. That was my big plan and I'm seeing it go down the toilet. I think I won't put it out to vote, but flip a coin instead. I think my chances will be better. Where can I get a double-sided coin at? :p

Greetings Wild Bunch!

Just paying you guys a visit to treat you to some AKL photos taken on my recent very quick (3 day) stay at the Lodge.

I had a room on the 5th floor overlooking the Uzima Savana.

The 3 day stay was perfect as it was a treat to myself as an escape from work and family.

I was surprised how spread out this Lodge is compared to the Wilderness Lodge. I think I'm a Wilderness Lodge gal at heart but I'm pleased to have experienced the AKL and all its splendor.

I'll pop in from time to time with a pic or two- and I took quite a few in three days! I loved looking at all the details that went into the design.

Great pictures, Kitka. That just makes my day.. I had a dream last night that we got upgraded to Savannah view for free. I guess I stay on the Dis so much that it has WDW on my mind, there is no telling how many times I've ridden EE w/out leaving my bedroom :rotfl:

I am seeing the "X" too. Wonder if the hosting sight is having problems.

Wow! I haven't posted on Jambo site for several days and Fabulous Tags (THANK YOU TAG FAIRY) Gorgeous Pictures, Zebra Dome Plate going around (any left?) all kinds of awesome things going on!

Been trying to figure out my ADRs (of course including Boma and Jiko),,,so many choices, so little time to try them all..................

I think I'm turning into somekind of maniac, but I was thinking about making my family a surprise itinerary that borrowed from travel itineraries when people go on real as (opposed to fantasy :cloud9: ) safaris-you know the ones that Mickey doesn't come on :confused3 ..I'd have to find some travel safari brochures and play around with them...Does anyone know whether there are any scrapbooking supplies specially AKL/AK themed?

By the way, I'm not a big drinker (a couple of glasses of wine a week, an occasional cocktail when I go out) but I'm thinking I have to try a Victoria
Falls speciality whenwe go. Any recommendations? :cool1:

Ok gotta run...there's a man chasing me down with a net...thinking I'm crazed and obsessed with AKL... :rotfl2:

No No No - Not Giving Up The Sunrise Safari

VAGAL - They can't make you give up the Sunrise Safari. All the things in life you give up for them and now they want this. Nope just can not happen! I refuse to believe this!

:sad2: They didn't really make you......Did they? I am so very sorry.

You seem to have a good attitude about going back. But, I would let my family know that the Sunrise Safari is ON for the next trip. Ok...I off my rant! Pass the Zebra domes and let me settle down a little bit here. :rolleyes2

Last night I posted a fairly long post answering Quitegirl's questions about the pre arrival mail-out. I also had some questions for you all. My post :crazy2: disappeared. Geez, and now I am at work and can't remember what all I wanted to ask. :rotfl: Must be brain burn from working too hard.

Thank you all for the good wishes on my 500th post. I guess I was expecting something special to happen...like change me over to a higher level than "mousketeer". Guess I have to wait till 1000 posts. But it was fun to party with you all. Thank you

Kitka - Thank you for sharing your pictures. Your photo of the pillors is really exceptional.

Got to run :car:

Kitka ~ Those were great pictures! Are there anymore to come?

I am hitting my 1 month mark :cool1: and am looking for as many pictures as I can to look at. I am really surprised how little pictures I took last trip. I think I spent too little time at the hotel since I was there for only 5 days and it was DBF first trip so we did a lot of the parks. Although we loved going for a dip in the pool every night. This trip though I am planning on taking tons of pictures of the hotel...getting some great ideas here.

Angel - I booked the safari thinking they'd really want to do it. It's down to the wire they so I was firming up our plans as they looked at me as if have I have three eyeballs or something for wanting to do it since they have to get up so early. I told them they bail on me this time but next time we are soooo doing it. No questions asked and no rants. Our dates have changed and it's not falling on a safari day either. :sad2: That's okay. You know AKL is one of my very, very favorite resorts. :teeth: *In my best terminator voice* I'll be back.
