tinknme,
We have breakfast at Boma on our first and last mornings at WDW. The food is very good, especially the made-to-order omelets. There are several South African dishes to try. Frunch, Boma's combo juice, is really good. Try the pressed pot of coffee (extra charge). It's one of the best cups of coffee at WDW...
...I agree! The banana toast is awesome, too!

I am taking my DMom, DSister, and Dcousin to WDW for their first time, and we are all staying at the AKL for the first time too. :cheer2: :woohoo:
Since we are trying to keep the costs down, we are just getting two standard rooms (My mom likes her privacy LOL). Is there a good recommendation I should request? I already requested connecting rooms but maybe a good location near an elevator, or a pretty garden view? I do not know the ins and outs of this resort, so any info would be great! I want to make things as special for them as possible...that is why we switched to a deluxe! :teeth:
Thanks!

What an awesome picture!!! Where was that taken from? Your pictures are getting me even more excited about our Sept trip! Thanks for sharing.
Hey, guys, I'm glad you like it. At the time we were staying 5th floor concierge and walking down the hallway when we passed a window and saw that view. We found the closest viewing area, which was very near by - and snapped the photo. pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust:

Has anyone used the babysitting service at AKL, is it called Cubs Den? :confused3 DH and I would like to have a nice dinner one evening and would just like some feed back.
Scoutsmom, Scout is addorable. We have a beautiful black lab ourselves. Her name is Lucy. :goodvibes

I haven't used it, but it is located on the first floor of Zebra Trail by the doors that go our to the Mara and the Pool and I peaked my head in there one day when they were cleaning (in the afternoon) and it looked like they have a lot of fun stuff for the kids to do.

All I keep thinking about is how far away Sept 2nd feels!!! I think I will end up planning my little heart out between now and then.
Has anyone done the culinary tour? How was it and was it worth the time?

I love that photo of the AKL with the fog! Last December it was cool at WDW. Every morning (6-8am) when I went to the pool it looked like that. The water still felt great, and the hot tubs afterward felt even better!!!!
Scoutsmom...The culinary tour is GREAT! We did it last year and I really enjoyed it. We started off at Jiko, where Chef David explained the cooking area, and then had flatbreads and sauces for us to try. It was very interesting. Next we moved on to Boma where the chef told us about the many different types of food. Of course I loved the samples! Even DD8 enjoyed her special PB&J sample. ...they end the tour with a special dessert sample ...Zebra Domes. You asked if it is worth your time...Oh, yes, well worth your time!
BTW...you can also purchase Zebra Domes at The Mara. They're located in the refrigerator case.

While on the culinary tour do you get a lot of samples or just a tast? We are planning on doing this the day we arrival with ADR's at Boma for 7pm and I don't want to be too full on samples to enjoy the meal. TIA. The trip is getting closer and I can't wait. I am enjoying the planning sooo much. :tigger:

A couple of questions...
Is the culinary tour for concierge level guests only? I know the safaris are.
Also, I was thinking of spending 8 days at Disney, would a split stay between AKL concierge and Poly concierge be worthwhile? Or should I pick one or the other. My dear mother is celebrating her 80th birthday and I thought I'd pull out all the stops :)
Thanks in advance!

I would like to know from anyone who has done the culinarry tour, what do you get samples of? I also do not want to spoil my appetite but I also don't want to insult the chef. ;)

I would say it's just a taste. The culinary tour will be a great introduction to Boma prior to your ADR. I believe the tour begins at 4:30, but check the information board near registration to be sure.
The culinary tour is open to everyone. No fee, and no reservations necessary, just show up at the Jiko podium at the appropriate time.
What types of samples will you receive? At Jiko there were several types of flatbreads with various dipping sauces. At Boma it may change from day to day. Don't be shy. If you see something you would like to sample just ask. DD8 even sampled the PBJ! Of course you'll finish with...drumroll please...Zebra Domes! (or something else if you desire) :teeth:

She has always wanted to be at AKL and hopes to one day be a vet for AK. Can anyone help me with any specific room requests for our pool view? I am so hoping we'll be able to upgrade to savannah! It would be just perfect for her!
Thanks,
Melanie
...you may want to consider "pool view - Zebra Trail"....I think that would work nicely for your family - especially your DD!

That's funny! MY DD8 also wants to be a vet @ AK when she grows up. We're also thinking of doing a trip to AKL for her on an upcoming trip ~ possibly that same weekend! The things we do for our kids ...... :goodvibes I presume from your nick that she'll be going to UGA. We're in NE GA & that's where our DD plans to attend, although we're a lot further from getting there than you are! :teeth:
We've also thought about checking into the special lunch with an animal keeper for her when she gets a lil bit older. She would ask ONE ZILLION questions!!! :rotfl:
Well then, you [and ugadog99] MUST make ressies to spend at least one day doing concierge so you can be eligible to sign up for SS...your duaghters will be in 7th heaven!! It's a 'NOT-TO-BE-MISSED' experience, especially for animal lovers!

What a great splurge for your family!!! I have stayed pool view before and I really liked our location on the Zebra Trail. It was close to the elevators to head out to the pool and the Mara. Here is the view we had:

I have ressies for August 13-19 for AKL, but now my DH wants to go during XMas...he is head football coach for our peewee football program here in Lodi and the 'season' begins August 1. I tried changing our ressies to the last week in July, but only the WL is available. Don't get me WRONG, I love the WL (after all, I am the "Keeper of the WL FAQs" :teeth: ) but my DFam was so blown away by AKL, they don't really want to stay anywhere ELSE!! I, however, DO NOT want to go during Xmas [:cold: too cold!!], but I have till June 28 to cancel.....send mucho pixiedust: this way, guys  !!

Thank you, thank you! I will be sure to request Zebra Trail. We plan on doing AKL concierge for her high school graduation. I just thought she really deserved this special trip for her birthday. We stayed on the Zebra Trail also......... it was fantastic!!! It was room #3578. We had an awesome view, it was perfect. I'd be completely satisfied with the exact same room!!! We were really happy to be on the 3rd floor - the lobby floor, it was really great getting off the bus, walking through that awesome lobby, right to our hallway...... it was great, except the part where we got sidetracked at Zawadi Marketplace... :rolleyes1

Ya'll I'm so sad to say that we've come into some medical expenses. We have changed our package to Pop Century for a savings of $846.60. We have stayed at Pop before and it is clean and the transportation is great. It is no AkL by any stretch of the imagination. But the difference will pay the medical expenses w/ a little left over. I'm so sad but at least I'll still get to go and we got to keep the free dining w/ a preferred room. Thanks for all of your help in the questions I had. Thanks Scoutsmom & Kimmar. The girls are actually excited about staying at Pop, they like the IN YOU FACE theming there and DH could care less where we stay. I thought about going to a mod but we've been lucky enough to get the $39 air fare from SW for the past 2 years so the difference in mod and value would pay the $394 air fare.
I'm the only one out of the whole bunch that could lay down and cry. But one things for sure I can still hope for Feb.

Uhhhh ...... what's SS? :confused3 Sorry to ask a silly question, but when you don't know - you don't know!
I believe she is referring to the Sunrise Safari (there is also a sunset safari, but that is 16 and older(just done at AKL and not AK)). This is from All Ears Net:
What is the Sunrise Safari?
Sunrise Safari Breakfast Adventure is available to concierge guests only. The tour, along the safari ride path, lasts about 45 minutes and includes multiple stops so that you can stand up and take many pictures. Each of the animals along the way is described in great detail, since there is plenty of time. The Adventure is available on Sunday and Thursdays.
After the Safari, you go to Tusker House for a breakfast buffet which includes both standard American and African items. Each person also gets a FastPass to Kilimanjaro Safari to experience it "the regular way".
Betty Queen writes: Just came back from an AKL concierge, and wanted to report that the Sunrise Safari increased in price to $55 per person on November 1, 2005. (Wouldn't deter us a bit...it was wonderful as always!)
Bill Leska writes: We just returned from a six night stay at AKL, where we did the Sunrise Safari twice. It was that great! Here are a couple of updates you may want to consider:
The fact sheet said that there was a limit of 28 persons. This wasn't the case for either of our safaris. One of them had 55 people and the other had about 50. However, there does appear to be a limit to the number of people: We went on the safari on a Saturday and like it so much, we booked it again for the following Tuesday. As the Concierge was setting things up, he mentioned that it looked good, because there wasn't anyone on the waiting list. (Having a waiting list indicates to me that there is a limit of some kind.)
As I mentioned, we had a great time on the safari and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who enjoys the Animal Kingdom's Kilimanjaro Safari. The Sunrise Safaris were the highlight of our trip.
It can be booked up to 90 days out, by contacting AKL concierge directly (once you have your room reservation).

I'll be staying at AKL 12/14-12/20 (7 nights ) :cloud9: with dh, dd 12, ds 4. We arrive at the airport on the 14th at 1 so I guess we'll be at the Lodge by 4? I'd love to be able to to the great culinary tour you've all raved about!
I wasn't planning to make dinner reservations for that night at Boma till about 7, since we only have to walk back to our room. :cool1: Does anyone have a sense of Boma's peak dinner time?
(Also are reservations required for breakfast? The day after we do the MVMCP, I think we'll sleep in 7:30 (lol) and eat a leisurely breakfast and then go to World Showcase in time for its 11 am opening.)
Later in the week I wanted to make an ADR for Jiko just for myself and DH, probably at 8. (My daughter would probably like it-she is a little gourmand but my son's idea of fine dining includes chicken fingers and french fries.) I was planning on making a reservation at Artist's Point In WL for all four of us which I think will be ok, but my impression is that Jiko might be a little more sophisticated? (I thought one night we would check out the holiday decorations at the WLodge and the Grand Floridian and Artist's Point seemed like a great place to eat and I also love the WLodge.)
Is it fairly easy to get a cab to go from the AKL to the WL?
All of the activities everyone has written about sound like so much fun! The kids will love the cookies. Are the stories for kids or adults or both? It seems like there are some indoors and some outdoors? Is there a place to get hot chocolate or Irish Coffee or other such type of thing (for big kids)?
Does any one know what the cultural Safari is?
I'm a little overly excited-I feel like a hyped up 8 year old! :Pinkbounc
We just came back from a week's stay in London last month and I might even be more excited about this-is that pathetic?
All right I better pace myself now...have a while till trip!

Hello :wave2: Patricia,
:welcome: to the dis and the AKL thread!!
I have never been to the lodge when they have all of the holiday decor out, but it looks amazing and I hope you share pics when you come back from your trip!!! Depending on your mode of tranpostation I would say you could be at AKL as early as 2-2:30pm.
I wasn't planning to make dinner reservations for that night at Boma till about 7, since we only have to walk back to our room. :cool1: Does anyone have a sense of Boma's peak dinner time?
Peak dinner hours for disney are between 6-8pm. I would reccomend making an advanced dining reservation (ADR) at the 180 day mark. Remember you can always change or cancel the reservation.
Also are reservations required for breakfast? The day after we do the MVMCP, I think we'll sleep in 7:30 (lol) and eat a leisurely breakfast and then go to World Showcase in time for its 11 am opening.)
Reservations or ADR's as Disney calls them are not required for any restaurant, but it is highly reccomended that you do make one. Basically an ADR means they will give you the next available table for your size. If you just walk in you may risk not getting a table or waiting awhile (not that the breakfast is always that full there).
Jiko does have a children's menu as well that has mac and cheese, PB&J, etc. IMHO Jiko and Artist Point are both the same level of sophistication...plus they are both very tasty!!
Is it fairly easy to get a cab to go from the AKL to the WL?
Yes they will just call up the next availble cab for you at the bell stand.
Are the stories for kids or adults or both? It seems like there are some indoors and some outdoors?
They are for both ages
Is there a place to get hot chocolate or Irish Coffee or other such type of thing (for big kids)?
They have this in the Mara (aka food court) if my memory serves me right
Does any one know what the cultural Safari is?
I have never done that so maybe someon who has can tell you about it.
I'm a little overly excited-I feel like a hyped up 8 year old! :Pinkbounc We just came back from a week's stay in London last month and I might even be more excited about this-is that pathetic?

Ok for all you AKL experts here, I have one question: We will be driving 550 miles to get to WDW, so we will have our truck. When we stayed at POR, we had about 130 miles of just park-to-park miles on the truck. We have a gas guzzler (Nissan Titan, Largest truck on the market), so will we be better off to take busses to and from AKL when we don't have ADR's, or just take the truck everywhere the whole time?
plutospup
04-20-2006, 07:29 AM
AKL bus service is very good, especially since they don't share with other resorts. It is by far faster to take a Disney bus to MK than a car. The only questionable route I have found is to Downtown Disney. So...leave the driving to Disney. Sit back, relax, and enjoy.

I personally would take the bus to MK and then take the ferry to WL - it's a lovely boat ride, and you can do it leisurely....(or perhaps, do tht on the way BACK.... :confused3 ) . I also agree with plutospup that the bus to DTD is a little longer, but my epxerience has been that buses from ALL the resorts take longer (with the exception of DxL) to get to and from DTD.....

Thanks for answering my questions scoutsmom!!!
We're thinking of doing AKL Sept 1-4, but we haven't fully made up our minds. We are definitely going to stay there, just a matter of when .....
Quick questions - WHEN/IF AP rates come out, do they also apply to concierge? The SS really sounds neat, but we've just never shelled out the extra $$$ to do concierge.... :confused3 DH would LOVE to, but I'm a bit iffy myself.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you :wizard: :wizard: I wish we were staying longer, but my sister could not get more than a week at the time! I'm planning a solo trip at the end of September for Food and wine and MNSSHP so I'm hoping if AP rates come out they have a decent rate for AKL so I can stay again!!!
Thanks!! I"m hoping he'll go for it!!! It's looking good ~~ ;)
We are thinking of getting AP's, since we go so often!! I do hope they offer good rates for you!!!! It's a great feeling ~ going "home"!!! :wizard:

Ok for all you AKL experts here, I have one question: We will be driving 550 miles to get to WDW, so we will have our truck. When we stayed at POR, we had about 130 miles of just park-to-park miles on the truck. We have a gas guzzler (Nissan Titan, Largest truck on the market), so will we be better off to take busses to and from AKL when we don't have ADR's, or just take the truck everywhere the whole time?
We actually never drive once we get to our resort!! We park, and don't see our car again till we leave! The transportation is great, we've never had a problem with it. I wouldn't drive anywhere if I didn't absolutely have too!!!

Hi~
Booked a standard room for 5/31-6/7 for my buddy and I.
How are the standard rooms, the views, and how is the resort with complimentary upgrades. We don't expect anything more than what we booked and are confident we will have a blast. Having said that, we prefer to be in a room near the lobby and close to the bus area since we tend to partake in "spirits" at night at Pleasure Island and when doing the walk of shame, we would like it to be short hehe. Any sugestions for room location requests for a room located off the lobby area?
We were originally booked at our fav resort GF but we despise the long bus shared bus rides to any area not linked by the monorail. Can't stand the fact the we stood on the bus most everywhere we went from GF due to it being the last stop to/from everywhere.
We are excited to try a new resort and a new experience.
Thanks for any info on the standard rooms.

You may want to request Giraffe Trail - near lobby, so that you can be near the bus. Actually, the bus stop is down the walkway to your left as you leave the AKL lobby - not a far walk at all! I loved the fact the AKL didn't share buses with any other resort....have fun!

Dear Scoutsmom and Kimmar,
Thanks for your above responses.
I'm sure this have has been covered and probably beaten to death but do you think a car is necessary when staying at AKL?
We aren't planning on leaving the Disney property-but I do want to come back from the parks to the Lodge to take a relaxation break-is t his doable?
We only plan on really going out on 2 nights, once to the Boardwalk and once to dinner to the Wilderness Lodge.
DH looks at this as an opportunity not to have to drive and even though he denies it my driving makes him nervous...
but if it would make life easier we could rent a car for a week.
Has there every been a consensus reached on this issue?
Thanks,
Patricia

Patricia,
I would not think a car is nescessary. I always let Disney do the driving while I'm there. The busses run very freqently every 15-20 minutes and more often at park opening and closing time. At the theme parks they have bus dispatchers as well so if the AKL bus line is getting long they are great about getting a bus there to get people back to the resort. I always try to take a mid afternoon swim/relaxation break and I think staying on property with the busses is such an added bonus for this.
As far as travling to other areas depending what time you go at you can use AK (not sure about December hours, but Ak seems to close around 5-6pm)for a hub. Just take the AKL bus to AK get off the bus and get in line for the resort you want. Also as Kimmar suggested take a bus to MK and then use the boat launch to reach the WL. Remember you can always take a cab if you need to, but I would plan on leaving about an houto forty five minutes before your reservation at WL to ensure you get there on time.
Plus if for some reason you decide you need to rent a car once you are there it can be easily arranged. The Swan and Dolphin hotels have car rentals available and also you can rent cars nearby the Ticket and Tranporation Center (by the MK)...they will even pick you up at your resort with a small bus and bring you there to get your car.

Hi Patricia ~
I know this wasn't directed at me, but If I may............ like I posted earlier, once we arrive at our resort we never use our car again till we leave. We like using Disney transportation, it's really actually convenient and we've never had a problem with wait times, room, etc. AKL also does not share buses with other resorts, which makes it really nice and faster. I'd say, no need at all to rent a car!!! Plus, with the cost of gas........ :scared:
Enjoy someone else having to deal with the traffic!!! Have a great time!!!
OH, I do agree with the other post about leaving about an hour early for any ADR's, you want to make sure you get there in ample time....... and if you are early, you can always explore a little bit!!!

MILEMRKR63 ~ HI!! I have NO doubt you will love your new experience at AKL. It is a gorgeous resort, we fell in love with it!!! I suggest that if you haven't already done so...... Call and have them note on your reservation your request....... that you want to be near the lobby and bus stop. (I'd try for the 3rd floor which is lobby level, it's a pretty straight shot from the bus stop into the lobby, if your room is on this floor that might be good for you).
As for being upgraded, usually, from what I've read/ heard and happily experienced, AKL, does try to do this. However, with that said, your dates are for what I assume is a busier time frame, so, I wouldn't count on it....... again, it still does NOT hurt to ask if there are any complimentary upgrades when you check in. We went to AKL in Feb. and I had booked a standard view room, however, I also noted on my resv. that I MUST have a non-smoking room (for med. reasons) and I requested bunk beds...... (DS6) ;) Anyway, at check in we were complimentary upgraded to a deluxe bunkbed savannah view room, NO I did not ask for it, but I was indeed prepared too!!! ;) I have NO problem asking, what's the worst that can happen??? I only wanted to make sure, even if we did get the standard room, that it was not facing the parking lot! KWIM ~~ Anyway, IT was fantastic!!!
So, it does happen, just not sure how much it happens during a busier time. Good Luck!!! Have a Victoria Falls Mist for me!!!! ;)
Here's some Pixie Dust for ya........... :wizard:

Hi Patricia,
This wasn't directed to me either but since we are all friends here I will chime in anyhow.
After 4 stays and 5 coming up real shortly I can say we have never used a car and haven't ever felt the need to. We have been there both busy and slow times and found the bus transportation to be great. This time will be different for us since DH will be using an ECV but hopefully that won't change things. We did diner at the Boardwalk area once and also the Wildnerness Lodge. What I did was make sure when I made my PS for each I looked at the park hours for the closest and planned them around that. For instance I planned our night at WL for a night that MK was EH and that way I could take the bus to the MK and hop on the boat to WL and enjoy a nice relaxing diner, take the boat back and hop on the bus back to AKL. I did the same with our reservation at the Beach Club. I took the boat from MGM to the Beach Club and back then hoped the bus from MGM back to AKL. I did allow an hour and half from AK to the diner and had more than ample time in fact we were very early for both diners and were luck to get in. Also, we found taking the boats a nice change and also allowed us to see some different sights.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my transportation question-the more the merrier-I always appreciate all the info/help I can get!
I keep checking this AKL lodge thread and I've gone back and read up to about page 50-there is an amazing amount of great info-you know stuff you can't get from guidebooks-no matter how well done they are.
This thread is responsible for us choosing the AKL (I had to convince my husband and daughter to try something different-they love the WL, as do I.
The photos and great info on this thread made it possible for me to do it!
And now everyone is Psyched! (even my 3 1/2 year old who will be 4 by the time we go in December-but I don't dare tell him we're definately going (although he gets sometime is up!) or he'll be packing!

Hi Neighbor to the South. We are coming your way in just a few days. We are leaving from the 30th Street station after a night at the Hampton out by the airport. How is gas down there? I hear there are shortages and now wonder if we should take the bus vs driving down. I really wanted to spend Friday at Longwood before checking into the Hampton.
Also, what a nice looking family you have and what a great place to take a picture at.

Love the new ticker! WoohoO! :woohoo:
Hi Neighbor to the South. We are coming your way in just a few days. We are leaving from the 30th Street station after a night at the Hampton out by the airport. How is gas down there? I hear there are shortages and now wonder if we should take the bus vs driving down. I really wanted to spend Friday at Longwood before checking into the Hampton.
Also, what a nice looking family you have and what a great place to take a picture at.
Hi, friend, I actually left Telford this morning and am now sitting in Cleveland, teaching for the week. When I left this morning, there was plenty of gas. When I hit Ohio it started to dry up and I had to use premium rather than regular. Generally, my take on Telford is that folk are sensible and there won't be any mad rush. I hope this helps!

Hi everyone,
We are so excited for our first stay at AKL. The pictures are spectacular.
I posted this on the restaurants board but didn't get any response. Hopefully someone will be able to help me here.
We will be staying at the AKL in May and I know we will want to eat at Boma for breakfast. It's a must do for dinner - I already have my PS. I didn't think that I would need one for breakfast, but after reading these boards I'm starting to see that it's very popular.
Should I make my PS now or can I wait to see when I get there?
Thanks for all the great info on the lodge. We loved the WL and expect to love AKL as well.

Hi,
When are you going in May? If it is early May and you eat early meaning before 8 I have found you don't need a PS. Another thing I have done is run down in the morning when I go for my first coffee and make a PS then and have never had a problem if I tell them I am staying there. If you are eating after 8 then I would say yes make a PS just to be safe.
Thanks we're early risers. I usually get my coffee as soon as they open - so that would probably work for us. Last year at our WL stay I found myself waiting for them to open on a # of occasions.

...when you pull up to the front door and the CM's greet you, let them know you are staying concierge - they can then direct you as to where to go (there are actually TWO different locations - one right outside the front door to your left, and another immediately to the left when you enter the lobby[not part of the check-in counter after you enter the lobby] that is kinda 'tucked away' in the corner...)

:rotfl2:
The funny thing is I probably wouldnt mind putting it up!
My kids are extremely early risers at home and I can't seem to break out of it even when we're away.
Was considering asking if concierge was available for our first night so DH could do Sunrise Safari. We will be there the end of May. I'm figuring I should't get my hopes up.

...you can call ahead to ask if concierge is available (more than likely, it will be). However, you must be staying 'concierge' on the day you plan on 'doing' SS....plus, you should be aware that SS is an extra fee, it is NOT included in concierge; concierge only ALLOWS you to be eligible for it....I would call right away, since it gets booked pretty quickly...

My parents just bought airfare for our trip this August and they were able to book it so that we will be able to keep our ADR for Boma's breakfast on the last day of our trip. We're also staying concierge level and I was wondering if it even makes sense to eat breakfast at Boma, as I have been hearing that the concierge offerings are excellent and more than sufficient. Any advice?

After being transferred 3 times, and being on hold about 15 minutes (I love my free minutes!) I finally talked to someone familiar with AKL's Adventure Camp!
AKL Adventure Camp...$70 (includes $30 cost of ostrich egg). Children 6-14 will love this interactive adventure. Camp includes real ostrich egg painting, private Lodge tour with special animal viewing, and buffet lunch (not in Boma, but includes sandwiches & wraps) overlooking the Savannah. Currently takes place on Wednesday.

Hopefully, I will soon be able to make our AKL ressie for early August, and I will be able to add the new ticker to my signature.
Do you think the tag fairy would show up if I mentioned that I was going to have a one-night stand at the AKL?
Ok....really...the whole family will be having a one-night stand in AKL Concierge with me, but that would take all of the drama out of the tag line, wouldn't it? After all, bunk beds and savannah surveillence cameras don't exactly spell romance....
Now, how do I get me one of those snazzy AKL tickers?

Hey Guys,
I'm so excited!! I didn't realize when you go to ticker tag that they had to approve your ticker before they put it on the site. Well mine got approved...was kinda funny *** I saw it in another diser's siggie and I was like hey that looks familar...well now I can't even get the darn thing to work :sad2:
ETA I'm happy I finally got it to work    Funny though it looked very bright when I made it in Photoshop, but now that it is posted it is not as shiny. Anyways if anyone wants one it is on page 24 of the ticker tag site obviously by Lisa :) Ok now I have to go back and catch up on the thread.

Activities...There is a lot to do at AKL! First of all there are "children's activities" where they receive a "bead" for attending. The beads look like ladybugs, giraffes, pink flamingo balls, etc. After completing all 5 events (various times of the day) they receive a special totem bead. It makes a nice souvenier. Quite frankly, as an adult I enjoyed watching the kids during the activities i.e. Flamingo feeding, Track the Animals, Garden Safari, Music of the Savanna, Wildlife Games. Non-Bead activities included "Night vision goggles"-a must do!, T-shirt painting, African doll making, cookie decorating, arts & crafts, Zawadi Marketplace Primal Parade, Storytelling by the Fire Pit, and so much more! The African CM's were a part of most activities, and would offer a special card showing where there are from. They were wonderful!
Also there are pool games, and miscellaneous activities in the lobby such as Medallion rubbing, and "Guess What This Is?" (Rhino horn, Giraffe vertebrae, etc)

 Oh No. . . Comcast took away our Travel Channel !!! Does anyone have the ability to make an extra tape or DVD? I would gladly reimburse - or exchange for one of my parade or show tapes.
Taking DNeph (8) for 2 nights at AKL in June (my 3rd stay, his 1st :goodvibes ). We're doing 2 nights at BCV for SWW at MGM and then moving over to AKL to enjoy the lodge, do sunrise safari and ride EE as many times as we can    !! He is an animal lover (even goes to zoo camp every summer) and just finished studying Africa in school this year - this trip is going to be so wonderful - he is soooo excited and I would love to watch the show with him ! If anyone can help, please PM me! :smooth:
:disrocks: UPDATE: A WONDERFUL DISER is making me a copy !! :thanks:

Do you think the tag fairy would show up if I mentioned that I was going to have a one-night stand at the AKL?
....:earseek:
...Ok....really...the whole family will be having a one-night stand in AKL Concierge with me, but that would take all of the drama out of the tag line, wouldn't it? After all, bunk beds and savannah surveillence cameras don't exactly spell romance....
...Whew!! :p
...Now, how do I get me one of those snazzy AKL tickers?
...go to Tickertag.com..... :thumbsup2

That sounds like so much fun I wonder if an old lady could sneak in and they wouldn't notice the age :rotfl2: I could tell them I am a mature 14 :confused3

Hey Guys,
I'm so excited!!

I am interested in the camp. Does anyone know how long it lasts? I have been trying to stay away from this thread because I am still not sure if we can afford to stay at AKL for our trip and don't want to be anymore disappointed when it doesn't work out. I would also like to know if they are strick with the ages. My second daughter will be 6 in November but I couldn't send one without the other.

kimmar067 Congrats on the post!
I hope I remember tomorrow at 11:30.
We just told our kids today that we will definately be going next month.
They will be so excited to watch it. My 2 1/2 yr old DS has been dreaming about going to Disney. When he wakes up from sleeping in the car he starts crying because we are not there.
Funny he was only 1 1/2 when we went last. He can't remember...can he?
scoutsmom99 Thanks for the schedule.
We will definitely participate in some of those activities on our resort day/

It's taken me 3 days to get through all of the posts on this thread, but b-o-y was it worth it. I'm new to the boards, but I have really enjoyed all of the info and pics of AKL. To all you veterans out there...
THANK YOU!!
I booked Sept 25-Oct 5 with free dining  and can't wait!!!! I've eaten at Boma twice for dinner, but now I'm wanting to try breakfast too. :scratchin I'll have to do the ADR's all over again if I do that
Hmm, will have to consult the spreadsheet itinerary :teeth: and see if I can work it out. I haven't stayed long at the Lodge, but just long enough to take a few pics...which I would share, but I don't have enough posts yet.
I'll keep posting til I git 'er done! :goodvibes

I just booked at AKL for May 8-14! I asked for the Florida Resident price and they said "Standard Savannah view with two queen beds - $230/night"!
I could NOT be happier! Let's hear it for the Florida Resident discount! :cool1:
I'm just sad that the entire resort is booked SOLID for the weekend of May 6-7. Only one $1200/night room available in the Contemporary tower. No thanks!
-------------
As for Christmas, I was there last year just before Christmas and it was beyond magical! And not too crowded until just before we left. Some friends who went down between Christmas and New Years reported that the parks were closed for being "full" and the throngs were thick and heavy.
I'd try for earlier in December :)

Has anyone been there over the 4th of July....and found the parks "full" and not able to enter? I was so excited, and booked this trip on a whim, on points......all of it.......that I got carried away, and booked it to leave on my DD and her friend's LAST DAY OF HIGH SCHOOL!!! :yay: We are taking both DD's and a friend for each.
It wasn't until a couple of weeks later (we are in Canada), that I actually gave my head a shake and realized that we would be there over the 4th... :confused3
Does anybody have any recommendations on what we should plan for that day? Maybe a waterpark day? Or half day park half day lodge? Still trying to figure it all out.
Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks!!

Christmas at AKL is absolutely beautiful. If you look back a couple pages you'll see my family standing at the base of the AKL Xmas tree. The entire lodge is beautifully appointed with African holiday decorations. Very, very nice.

We're headed to AKL for the first time ever!!!! In the past, we've mostly stayed at WL (our true love!) but this time we figured since we've always wanted to try AKL, we may as well try this time! We're so excited, it'll be DH and I with our little DD (6 mth. old) and we also got the Savannah view for $230 w/ our APs, but I noticed MATTNASH mentioned that it was standard Savannah view...is there a major difference? Is there a special 'section' we can try to request for?
Also, since we'll be with our little one, I think most of our dinning would be done at the resort, how are the restaurants and food? :teeth: :teeth: :teeth:
Any tips on staying at AKL w/ a little one too? THANKS!!! :thumbsup2

I don't have an annual pass, just Florida residency. I guess it's the same discount :)
As for Standard Savannah, there's a Deluxe Savannah View too. It's my understanding that all that means is a slightly larger room. There are also concierge rooms, and 1 and 2 bedroom suites that won't cost you any more than you could probably raise with a 2nd and 3rd mortgage on your home :)
The restaurants at AKL are some of the best at the whole Disney resort and there's a culinary tour you can take that let's you tour the kitchens, sample some food, and talk about the food prep!
I don't know about traveling with little ones, but I'll be traveling with my 80-yr-old mother and when we were there at Christmas, she had a GREAT time! :)
And you can't beat the view ;)

Stephwynn, we'll be right there with you! Staying at VWL from July 1-4, then transferring to AKL July 5-8. From what I have read on the boards, it will be CROWDED on July 4. That is not deterring us however!!! We are going to avoid MK on the 4th, but other than that, just planning to turn on the patience. I have heard that parks may be closed if they reach capacity later in the day, so you might want to do whatever park you want to do that day early, then hang at the resort for the p.m. (although, you might want to position yourselves somewhere that you can view fireworks in the evening). Allearsnet.com has a good write-up on tips for WDW on the 4th. Hope to see you there!
