We are WL fanatics. But we loved AKL. Just returned from a 4 night stay. Check in went so smoothly. All the CM's were extremely nice there. We didn't check in until about 7:30p.m. so I thought our choice of rooms would be very limited. The helpful CM who checked us in gave us several rooms to choose from. We ended up getting a room on the 5th floor with bunkbeds. We didn't really have a view, just the thatched roof, but our room was right off the lobby and the 1st room off the elevator. It was very convenient. The lobby is just beautiful. Very exoitc and very cultural. There was lots of things going on the evening we arrived. Slide show presentations, dancing and drum playing. We were a little concerned about not having a savannah view room. But there are so many place to view the animals, we didn't feel like we missed anything.
The restaurants there offered great food. We went to Mara and Boma. We enjoyed both very much. We were surprised how small the crowds were at both restaurants. Actually the crowds were pretty small everywhere we went. Hopefully next time we can try Jiko.
The grounds and landscaping are very beautiful. The kids really liked the pool. The water was very refreshing. The poolside bar served yummy drinks.
We felt very at home at this resort. We walked around the first night we were there and just explored. This is an amazing resort. Very intricate designs. Very nice layout making everything easy to find. After the first night there, I knew where everything was.
The rooms were very well kept and housekeeping did a great job. I thought there was ample lighting in the rooms, contrary to what otheres have said.
My kids loved watching the animals. We saw several different kinds while we were there. My DH and the kids used the night vision goggles. They said it was very cool.
The transportation was very good. Very minimal waits for the busses. Seemed like there was always a bus waiting for us when we left the parks. I liked not having to share a bus with any other resort. The bus rides did not seem to take very long.
We will be headed back to WL in June. But I can definitely see us going back to AKL very soon. It is a very peaceful and relaxing resort. I was nervous about wandering away from WL and trying a new resort, but I have found a new a second favorite. :)

My sister and I are staying concierge 11/9 - 12 so we can do the safaris. We are also thinking about doing the segway tour. When should we contact the concierge staff to book these tours? Or do they contact us?
Thanks! BTW, I booked directly through Disney. Used the AAA discount, and I am hoping they will offer an AP since I bought my first one so I could get the discount at WL for a short trip 4/7 - 11.

Hi everyone!
Thanks for all the great pictures. I am counting down the days, well months, until our August trip. I promise to take lots and lots of pics for you all to share the magic just like all of you posters are.
Anyway, I was wondering if someone could help me out here and explain the abbreviations of IMO and IMHO or something like that? I've been reading the boards here for a few months and am still clueless. :confused3

:wave2: I am the one who needs the bunk beds for our family of 4.
Does anyone know the breakdown of how many bunk bed rooms there are and where they are? If I book pool view, (standard room is not available) are there a lot of bunk bed rooms? What about if I upgrade to a different view? (other than paying more for deluxe bunk bed rooms or suites) I'm trying to figure out my chances of getting the bunk beds. DH is not impressed with disney that they can't guarantee that we will get the bunks. Can you help me?
Should I book through a TA? Should I call Disney or book online?
All I want is Non Smoking and Bunks, and I'm really not picky about anything else. :bitelip: :listen:
Thanks!

....when in doubt, go straight to the 'horse's mouth'....get in touch DIRECTLY with AKL and put in a request for just that: 'Pool view, non-Smoking and bunks/queen' room. I would think that you chances are fairly good for getting your request, especially if you explain to AKL that you have 2 children of different sexes.....

hi everyone  ,
I too found this *AWESOME* :thumbsup2 thread on Monday and have just finished reading all of it. :cheer2: My family of 5 will be staying at AKL for the first time in August. I was hoping that I had made a good choice when I booked back in December and now, after reading all your posts, I am POSITIVE that I made an EXCELLENT choice! :yay:
I have a question for the experts... We currently have a package booked with Disney (room, tickets, dining) but I am now wondering if I might be able to save some $$ by purchasing an AP. Does anyone know if they offer AP savings on rooms in August (2nd week)? Also do you know where I can get information on what restaurants are included in the AP 20% off dining?
fyi - I called Disney today to put in my room requests (thanks for all the helpful hints) and the CM told me that I could not request turndown service because we did not have a concierge room  - we are booked in a deluxe/bunk/savannah.
thanks again,
Mara - yes, my name is the same as the restaurant at AKL :tilt:

Once you arrive call housekeeping and request turndown service. You should have no problem. Whenever we stay deluxe (nonconcierge) we simply call and ask for turndown. Love the chocolates on the pillow!!

I have to say the Zebra Domes are not one of my favorites, but I sure do love those little triangle things with the berries on them what ever they are called. I probably eat at least 10 of them each meal when we eat at BOMA. Now my DH was drooling when he saw the pictures of the domes.

Just back from our 1st and last trip to the AKL. We enjoyed our stay but the whole family agrees that AKL is just not for us. We are glad we tried it, but we are more of a Beach Club or Poly kinda family.
Things we enjoyed at AKL:
1. The AKL buses only make stops at the AKL, no sharing with other resorts :thumbsup2
2. We never had to wait more than 10 minutes for a bus :thumbsup2
3. The valets were wonderful and extremely fast when retrieving our car.
4. The animals were wonderful to look at and watch.
5. Really enjoyed the juice served with breakfast at Boma. Very good!
6. The resort was excellently themed!!!
Things we did not like at AKL:
1. We booked a standard savannah view room. I had specifically requested a NON-smoking room and if possible bunk beds. We checked in at 8pm. The front desk CM wasn't wearing her "Disney Smile" She quickly checked us in and gave us our keys. Before we were dismissed from the front desk I inquired about the room we were given. The CM said that our room is NON-smoking but no bunk beds are available. Slightly dissapointed about no bunk beds but that's the luck of the draw. We went to our room which was on the extreme far right side of the horseshoe. We were surprised to find a SMOKING room. Back down to the lobby to get our room changed to a Non-smoking room. Our new non smoking room was on the extreme far left side of the horseshoe.
2. My family is fairly physically fit, but the walk to the room is WAY too long. Because of the savannahs which is really cool to look at, there aren't any shortcuts anywhere like at the other disney resorts.
3. The food at Mara was not very good and their system for preparing food in a timely matter needs work. We spent way too much time in line there.
4. The pool was too cold for me to enjoy swimming in. A few of the other AKL guests whom I chatted with also felt the same. I also don't like swimming in green water. My kids still had great fun in the pool and I enjoyed watching them swim.
5. Did laundry one evening. The laundry room was the only place that wasn't too far from our room. The change machine was out of change in the laundry room. Had to walk all the way back to the lobby to get change.

Thank you for sharing your honest opinions about AKL. I agree that AKL is NOT for everybody - that's why there are so many differently-themed resorts at WDW. I would only like to comment about your not caring to swim in green water. Let me clarify for those who have never visited AKL - the water is definitely NOT GREEN! Rather, the floor of the pool is painted that color to more closely resemble a savannah watering-hole. While it may not appeal to some folk, it contains water that is VERY suitable for swimming. It's just a matter of personal preference - and most people envision a sparking BLUE pool. Our family loved it, as well as many families who have young children or family members with mobility restrictions, because it is a zero-entry pool. That is, one section of the pool has a gradual increase in the height of the water, as opposed to a pool with a wall that has a sudden drop.
Also, I can PERSONALLY vouch for the LON-N-N-N-NG walk from the lobby to our room! All-in-all I would STILL stay at AKL, weighing all the plusses and minusses.
Again, thanks for the trip report! :thumbsup2

Thanks for sharing your trip with us and I to agree that not every resort is for everybody. If everybody who visited a resort fell in love with it there would be no room for anybody else :confused3
I to would like to reassure everbody also that the pool at AKL is certainly more than safe to swim in. The color of the pool as Kimmar stated is due to the color of the bottom. If you look at the pictures people have posted that is what gives it its beautiful landscape effect. Personally I feel that if it were blue the landscaping around it would not be as effective.
I to agree that if you are at the end of the horseshoe it is quite a walk. But I really enjoy that walk and yes I am not toting kids at the end of the night or I would probably feel different. Each visit there we have been at the end or close to the end of Zebra trail and each morning I not DH run for the coffee and I throughly enjoy my walk. The reason I do is that I love looking at the different views along the way and all the different animals I can see. Each days trip is different and some times by the time I get done gawking the coffee is cold :rotfl2:

Sorry didn't mean to give anyone the impression that the pool is unsanitary. The pool was truly beautiful, water looked very clean, landscaped very nicely, the lifeguards were extremely attentive, and had a very nice set up of lounge chairs. Also the towels were easily to find. The pool area is very close to the arcade and to Mara which is very convienent.
We truly enjoyed our time poolside, it was one of the highlights of our trip. The water is only made to look green, no problems with the ph or algae or anything like that. I just don't care for green water just felt weird to me. Our pool experience could have been greatly enhanced if the water temperature was raised just a few degrees.
I do highly recommend visiting the pool at AKL. My gripes are very minor and shouldn't dissuade anyone from having an enjoyable time there. Swim and be happy!!!

When and how do I start putting in room requests? We'd really like bunk beds, My kiddos will be 7 and 10 opposite sexes and I don't want them together and I don't want to sleep with DD. I slept with her for a week on Cape Cod and UGH she kicked the daylights out of me LOL! We are going to spend our first night off site (it's still "holiday" season) then go to the resort early to drop off our things. I'm assuming I can drop off our stuff at like 7 or 8 am? Then we will head to a park maybe just over to Animal Kingdom.... Hopefully by being there EARLY I can get what I want room wise more than if I came later in the day? We are checking in the Sunday after Thanksgiving and I imagine it will be a big move out day for the holiday trips....

..... :thumbsup2 ...sorry if I sounded HARSH; I didn't mean it that way. I just wanted readers to know WHY the pool is that particular color. As for the water temp, although we visited last February, it was quite warm to swim - day OR night!. However, when we visited CSR during XMas week in December 1999, there was NO WAY that we were going into that pool! :cold: (I was under the impression that ALL WDW resort pools were heated..... :confused3 )

Although requests are only that [ and cannot be guaranteed] I would contact AKL directly [ASAP] and explain that your children are different sexes, hence you prefer to have bunks....

Hi folks, DD8 is earning her Brownie "Try-it" badge for computers. I thought this would be a friendly place to introduce her to "talking on the computer".
Hi, I'm 8 years old, and our stay at the AKL was great! The people were very nice. It was neat to see animals at the end of the hall. I even made friends with the flamingos! I can't wait to go back!

plutospup's DD - Hi! Welcome to the DIS ! I am taking my DNeph (also 8) for his first stay at AKL in June. Is there anything else you would recommend for him to enjoy? Did you do any of the activities where you earn beads? He is looking forward to the storytelling at the fire pit and observing the animals with the night vision goggles. He is a huge animal lover, so I know he's going to love staying at AKL, too! :smooth:

Hi,
What a neat way to get used to chatting on the computer and what better subject than our favorite resort. Did you get to talk to any of the CMs out by the animals and did you learn about the countries they came form while you were there. What was your favorite part of the hotel.

Thank you for the replies. I stayed in a room over the pool. there were many places to see animals. I really liked the giraffes and the flamingos. I talked to one of the CM and her name was KT. To fly from Africa to America it takes a very long time. The bead activities were fun. I did all 5, and crafts too. My favorites were animal tracking, flamingo feeding, and night vision goggles. My favorite part of AKL is the flamingo pond and I learned how to comunicate with them - "WOOOONK".

We've stayed at many WDW resorts. I must say the children's activities, CMs, and of course the animals at AKL rank it at the top of my list.

Maybe I will see you in line -- I will have my lime green mickey :teeth:
First time stay at AKL -- Looking forward to it. I think DD will really get into the animals.
Also - I just called and put a room request in for the following:
1) That our room be connected to the other party we are traveling with
2) Non-smoking
3) Not to put us all the way at the end of the horse shoe
(I figure the 3rd item is something we can address when we arrive at check-in - we will be checking-in around 9 AM - early)
I am nervous we widdled down our options - but it is a large resort.

Don't be nervous! This is a beautiful lodge. We really did not know what to request, and I think we would have been happy if they installed us in the lobby. Seriously, we requested savannah view, non smoking and connecting rooms if possible. The room was not connecting, but we noticed that one could be. We asked and we were accomodated. Howdy,
I know my trip is not until December of next year :sad1:. But, certain plans have already been decided. Okay, real quick here is the plan so far:
1) Family Trip (3 couples) Mom & Dad, Bro & Sis-n-law, Boyfriend & Myself
2) M&D - Contemporary CL B&SIL - Beach Club CL BF&Me - Beach Club CL
Weeellllll, I started reading this thread....and well...uummm....I got all pumped up about AKL :cheer2: go AKL go :cheer2: I advised all about AKL...D loves coffee, M likes they way it looks, BF absolutely has always wanted to stay here, and well, I've always wanted to too. Major discussion about AKL...we would all be in same place (if two couples are staying here, then the third couple is about 98% sure they will too.)
Here are some questions though:
1) Can someone give me a sample menu of the dinner offerings they serve during a course of the week (oh we will be staying 7 nights for sure). My father is allergic to Shrimp, and well, the rest of us love Boma's food. So just a sample of what they might serve would be great.
2) At Breakfast...do they offer hot oatmeal?
3) 3 of us are smokers :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: . We only need 1 smoking room as my Dad would come to my BF and my room to smoke. Do they have smoking rooms that look at the savannahs? We are very considerate smokers :thumbsup2 My mother has asthma and I see what second hand smoke does to her, so we do not like second hand smoke bothering anyone!! and do not smoke on the balconies (and we figured we couldn't since the animals would be near). So are there smoking rooms facing the savannah?
4) How is the staff when we tell them we have some special celebrations happening while we are there? 1. 40th birthday 2) 9th anniversary 3)48th anniversary.
Okay, I was trying to make this a short post :rolleyes1 And it grew.
Thanks for this great thread, I cannot wait to read more. BF & I are staying here for sure. These other questions will help the others decide.
Besides, we'll be able to make ressies at the end of the summer :woohoo:
Thanks Everyone!!!!!!!!!:thanks: :disrocks:

Fanofgoofy,
Yes they have oatmeal at BOMA on the buffett as well at Mara daily. Also, there is smoking savanaha rooms since we used to get them. They are located at near the ends of the horseshoes so the CM's told us. Both times we needed a smoking room we were right down from the elevaton on the 4th floor that goes down to the pool and restruant. If you find a map and look at Zebra trail they were the rooms right past the second elevator. As I understand it most of them are in that area. There is also non-smoking room in the same vanicity.
We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary there 2 yrs ago and didn't receive anything at all and we had it noted on our reservations and all our PS's. We were not disappointed since we really didn't expect anything but I have read of others who have had nice cards and things left for them. We were there though just after Thanksgiving and it was completely full and that could be one reason there was no time for anything special.

Ok, we have a one night trip planned for April 28th, my son's 5th birthday. We are planning a special surprise trip just him, me, and DH. We are leaving his 18 month old brother at home. My 5 year old has been through alot the last year and a half and this will be the first time we have gotten to take him and do something with just HIM. I am so excited.
Anyway, I have one question that I haven't been able to find the answer to. I am training to run the WDW Marathon in 2007, and will need to run the Saturday morning while we are there. I am figuring I am gonna need to put in probably 8-9 miles. I can't seem to find out wether or not AKL has a running trail or anything like that. If not do they have a gym? Although I would definately hate to run in the gym while I am at Disney, nothing more fun than running through the Animal Kingdom Lodge. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would love to hear them.
Take Care,
Dana

DH and I are staying at the AKL in May, just the two of us :goodvibes However, now I'm trying to decide on which resort to stay at following our Disney cruise, in August. Our DSs will be 18 and 15 at that time, so we need 3 beds. When we stay at the Polynesian or the Grand Floridian it works out well because ALL of their rooms have 3 beds. Last summer we stayed at the WL in a regular concierge room, with a queen bed and bunk beds, and the bunk beds were a tad small in height for the boys, although once they were in bed and laying down, they were fine. lol
So my question is: Is there such a thing as a concierge savannah-view DELUXE room, with 3 beds, that can be booked as a guarantee?? Actually, our order of preference would be: deluxe room so we'd have the third bed, then concierge, then view last (although I don't want a "bad" view).
If so, then I think this would be my first choice of resort for that trip, but from what I've read, you can't BOOK a deluxe concierge room. This doesn't make sense. :confused3
Can anyone give me info on this? Thanks! :)
P.S. I also thought it was odd that when we stayed at the WL concierge, we could've ended up with ANY kind of view. I like being able to book EXACTLY what I want, which is why the Polynesian, lagoon view, concierge rooms will ALWAYS be my favorite, because you also know exactly what building you'll be in :sunny:
(Well....that's my favorite so far... we still have many resorts to try out, but the Polynesian LVC will be almost impossible to beat, in my opinion ;) )

Terry ~
The reason the Poly can "guarantee" you a particular room/view/room arrangment, is that the buildings are 'set-up' in particular ways (ie: one building would have EXTRA room for that 5th person, etc. - do you know what I mean??) The AKL (and WL, for that matter) has rooms that are randomly situated with qu/qu set-up, qu/bunk, k, and so on. The building is not set up with ONE section being all qu/qu, one section being ALL k, one section set up with ALL qu/bunk, and so on....
Hope this helps....
(I would request a room with your MOST important priority, followed by your 2nd, and so on...)

I am so excited! My parents just surprised me with a change in our ressies to stay at AKL. To make a long story short last year DBF and I stayed at AKL and fell in love with it. So we were making plans to go back to WDW this year but could not get as good of a rate at AKL and decided to stay CSR with AAA discount. I will just so happen to be celebrating my bday while there and invited my parents to tag along. Then we got word that my DBF will be deployed and will not be able to go with us so I decided to still go with my parents instead of spending my bday at home alone. So my parents new how badly I wanted to stay AKL and went and changed the ressies without letting me know and surprised me with it tonight! (Our original reservation was linked so she cancelled both ressies for CSR). I am sooooo excited although slightly sad DBF won't be able to join. I was just so excited and needed to spread my joy.
So after my long ramble I do have a question. Do they still have The Butternut Squash Soup at either Mara or Boma? I loved eating that last Aug. and hope I can have my parents try it out.

If so, then I think this would be my first choice of resort for that trip, but from what I've read, you can't BOOK a deluxe concierge room. This doesn't make sense.
I thought all concierge rooms were deluxe, meaning they all have the daybed! I hope someone knows for sure, as I'm counting on it to be true!

First, Happy Birthday! :bday: And now yes the soup is still at Mara, at least it was in January. Oh my, it is soo good, isn't it?
I will say a prayer for your BF. It is such a selfless act to serve our country, and the men and women who stand up to keep us safe and free are an inspiration. God bless you and your family for your service to our country.

luvfigment,
Sorry to hear that your DBF is being deployed. My son was home a few weeks ago on a two-week leave from Iraq.
Kathy
Kathy, I am sorry that your son was only home for two weeks. How long is his deployment? My nephew is leaving soon for his 3rd tour, and will be there at least eight months. I do not know how his mother maintains her composure. May God bless your son, and along with your family. :grouphug:

John's Mom - I hope you enjoyed your time with your son he is in my prayers along with everyone else serving in the military especially in support of OIF and OEF.
Kimmar067 - Thank you to you also and I will have to try that Carrot Soup! All I could do when I got home last year was talk about that soup. I even tried to make it from the recipe on AllEarsnet and it came out soooo bad. I was really upset and DBF just laughed..and then consoled me.
Nancyg56 - Thank you for your prayers and kind words. DBF and I are very proud of our service and enjoy what we do. And YES that soup is the best!
So thank you to all for your responses and now I can dream about Butternut Squash Soup and of course Zebra Domes!

The tour is offered every day, I believe. The information is on the information board in the lobby. I went at 3:45 PM on a Saturday, and it was free. The tour begins in Jiko with a CM discussing the menu options as well as the cooking methods. There were samples to trry. Then to Boma, where two chefs took time to discuss the offerings on the buffet, and offer samples of the delicious soup. It was a nice tour, and I enjoyed it very much. I was the only one to attend and I was think that the tour was the same as if 25 people attended. Have a wonderful time!

Thanks for the prayers and support. My son left Germany for Iraq in October. He will be in Iraq for one year (even though his tour of duty with the Army is up this June). Before returning home, he must be in Germany for three months.
I must admit that the Animal Kingdom Lodge is my favorite resort and I love Boma and Jiko. But.......I don't like Zebra Domes. Please don't hate me. It's the coffee flavoring. I love coffee, but won't eat anything flavored with coffee.
Now, I'll take a seat at the Uzima Spring Bar and have a few "Nahtazus" any day. Of course, Victoria Falls Mists are almost as good.

Out SIL was on R&R from Iraq in Floridia this past January. We surprised our DD and SIL with a stay at AKL concierge level. They had a wonderful time and were treated superbly by everyone. We arranged for them to take the sunset safari with dinner following at Jiko. They were in Florida for two weeks and they have told us their stay at AKL was the highlight. Out SIL is coming home this July. We pray.
Kathy and Webbie I have added your son and daughter to my prayers. Thank you for their service and sacrifice. :grouphug:

Zebra domes are on my don't eat list as well but DH eats all I take  Now those triangle things that have the fruit on is a different story love them
La Nouba is just about the best thing going at Disney. My DH who is was really afraid would not like it has not after two years stopped talking about it. He just loved it as well as did I. In fact a year later I took my friend and her children to see it and they were just awed by it. It was not at all what I expected but is just one of the most fantastic shows going. We are just going to miss you. I believe we are leaving for the cruise on the 29th. We arrive at ALK on the 25th. This trip has become incredibly long thanks to Delta. When we arrive back to port on May 6th Delta changed our flights coming home , awful flights , a 6 hour layover, way to long for the twins. We are now staying in Port Charlotte for 5 days after the cruise with DH Mom. I would LOVE to go back to ALK after but I think it is definitely out of the budget .
It is gorgeous here today 70 and it is suppose to be even warmer tomorrow . This is totally putting me into the spirit of things.
For everyone leaving soon . Have a blast  pixiedust: :dumbo: :simba: :goofy: :tigger: :tink: :mickeyjum :donald: . don't forget to post pic when you get home . PLEASE , I would love to see them .

...sooo, have you made any specific plans for AKL???
Specific plans? Yes! :thumbsup2 We'll be arriving at MCO around 2pm on our first day. We plan on checking into the Lodge, looking around a bit, then heading over to AK for late afternoon-early evening. Then we'll be having dinner at Jiko that night at 8:30pm. The next evening we'll be having dinner at Boma, and we also have a breakfast ADR for Boma for one morning. I want to try all of the restaurant options at the Lodge while we're staying there :sunny: There are a few mornings that we don't have ADRs for specific restaurants so we'll probably just grab something from Mara on those mornings, and I also planning on having a quick lunch there on our last afternoon.
I want to take the time and check out the pool at least once or twice (DH isn't a big water person, but I am), and I want to check out the night-vision goggles. The Culinary tour sounds great, but we'll have to see if we can time that right, once we're there.
P.S. We're still undecided as to where we'll be staying following our cruise in August, so I think when we're at AKL next month, I'll ask to check out the deluxe rooms so we can make a better decision. Also, we're going to let DSs have a say as to where we stay in August since they'll be with us on that trip. So far, they're leaning towards Port Orleans since they know they can take the boat to DTD/DisneyQuest. :boat: lol

In Jan. I was blessed with a free trip to the world compliments of my mil. Our last night we stayed at AKL & I feel in love with the resort. I did not think another trip was going to be possible this year, but with the free dining I could not resist. So I have booked AKL Sept. 30th - Oct. 6th :Pinkbounc I told my 2 ds(12 & 9) that we will be staying at Pop Century, so this will be a surprise for them. I know they will love it!
In Jan. for our one night we were upgrade to a savanna view, I do believe in the Zebra trail, 2cd floor. It was awesome! We had planned on spending our last night at Epcot, but once we walked into our rooms(bil & his family were with us)that was it, we did not leave. Sitting on the balcony watching the animals was so exhilerating to me, I did not want to leave lol
We looked around the resort & were in awe with the decor & snapped lots of pictures! We had dinner at Bomas & I must confess, deserts were the hightlight for me :p The zebra domes are very good, but my favorite were those little bite size lemon meringue pies. Oh I ate way to many of those lol Dsil & I relaxed in the hot tub & enjoyed a drink. I tell ya this was a perfect ending to a wonderful vacation with my inlaws.
So I am now looking forward to a longer stay & getting to share this wonderful resort with my 2 ds  Here are some pictures from our stay, enjoy!

I can hardly wait for our first trip to AKL at the end of June. We had originally booked for six of us, each of our DD's was to bring a friend. I am fortunate enough to have some points that I was able to use to book the entire trip. yes!! 9 nights AKL, full hopper/waterpark passes...all FREE!!!
Unfortunately, one of the invited guests is no longer going to be joining us, and my travel agent is telling me no substitutions, has anybody ever arrived at the resort, and wanted to substitute a name of one of their guests? These are children, not adults, and I am looking to put a different name on the KTTW...is this not an easy switch at the front desk? Or would I be able to call AKL directly once they have our reservation? (According to my TA the package was purchased through a wholesaler here in Canada, and the actual names won't be supplied to AKL until about three weeks prior to our arrival). Has anyone run across a situation like this before? For the life of me I cannot see how it should be an issue to change a name, they are still getting the same amount of guests? Any advice would be helpful....
Thanks

book a waterview room. Thinking of trying AKL for a few nights after our Poly stay. Waterview would save some $, but after reading some of the posts (sorry I couldn't read all, so if this is a repeat, I apologize) seems that savannah is beyond exceptional and worth the extra $.

Thanks
I would contact AKL directly and explain your circumstances. I'm sure they will be able to help you out. I am thinking of adding another person or two to my list, too (not CHANGING a name) since we will be going in August, and I have sorta 'promised' 2 of my DS's that they could bring a friend.....good luck!
mlwear ~
I would just book the waterview (pool view) room and request a higher floor. That way, you have a better chance of still seeing animals from you balcony. Or, at check-in, you could ask if any upgrades are available; they can advise you then....

Hey for those of you who have stayed at AKL if you were getting a Savannah Room View what would you request? I want the best possible view for my money and am booking the vacation today. Any input would be appreciated.

Tinknme-Great pictures and report thanks for sharing. Isn't it a wonderful resort. I can't wait to get back there.
Cringer-Can't give you a specific room number since I can never remember the number of the room we were in once I leave. I can tell you that all 4 of our previous stays there have been on the Zebra trail and 3 of them on the 4th floor and 1 on the 5th. All we ever request is Zebra trail and 4th floor and have never been disappointed with our view and have yet to have a view of Arusha Rock. The reason we ask for Zebra trail is that it is the easiest access to the pool area and restruants which saves some steps when going there. Hope this helped some.

I cannot remember the name of the trail that we were on but we were in rooms 5425 and 5427. We had an amazing view of Arusha rock with animals all day long. I did not request anything but a Savannah view and I was not disappointed. I know that you will love this beautiful resort. Have a wonderful vacation!

We will be joining the AKL lovers, I'm sure....our first stay will be in August & free dining! We booked pool view, just couldn't swing the Savannah view with other things going on. If we can see our way clear, we may upgrade, down the road. If not, is there a preferred floor for pool view?

Good evening all! Just back from a quick, 4 night, "mom and boys" only trip to AKL. This was our first stay at the AKL and I will try to give you some of the highlights. Cast: Me (Mom) and 3 DS's, 8, 6, and 3.
First, we checked in around 2:30 and waited about 30 minutes to check in. I have to say, I was somewhat irritated. I have never waited that long to check in anywhere and it seemed like they had a ton of CM's behind the check in desk. Anyway, not really a big deal and I certainly wasn't going to let it get me down. The CM checking me in tells me all about the resort and says that he is able to accomodate my request of "non-smoking" and "bunkbeds". I say "as long as it isn't 40 miles away". Well, the joke was on me. He wanted to put us in the very last room on Kudu Trail facing the Arusha Savannah. I didn't think I would be up for the hike with three little ones in tow w/o a stroller or my DH to carry a sleeping 3 y/o, so I ask if there are any bunk bed rooms closer. He puts us in room 4222 on the Sunset Savannah.
The room is perfectly clean and acceptable, until it comes time to look out the balcony. Let's just say, I wasn't impressed. The Sunset Savannah is very small and I had a view of some service doors to my left and a large people pen to my right. I called the front desk and ask to be moved. The CM was very nice and informed me that I couldn't get a new room until later in the evening and she said "I know the view isn't very picturesque, but it is a favorite of the front desk and I think you should give it a try.". Well, I was lazy and didn't wan't to drag my kids around by myself, so I decided to stay put.
Boy, was I glad I did. This was our view only 1 hour later...
http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e279/my3pirates/th_april06022.jpg
We saw Giraffes, Ostriches, Thompson Gazelles, Nyalas, Marabou (sp?) Stork and loads of other birds.

B/c this savannah is so small, the animals are so very close. It was pretty amazing.
All in all, AKL was wonderful. Loved the pool, the restaurants and the Victoria Falls Mist :teeth: . Would I stay in a Savannah view room again? That I am not sure about. I think I would prefer being close to Mara and the elevators and might just book a pool view room. We just weren't in our room long enough (or at the right times) to sit and gaze at the animals all day. I may feel differently had I been on a larger savannah. Sunset was definately cool b/c the animals were so close, but it wasn't the prettiest of spots.
Not sure what kind of room I will book for our Feb. trip. I will be taking the boys again solo, b/c DH will be on deployment, and I think I am going to switch from my current ressie at WL to AKL. Any questions, please feel free to ask.

My experience was a lot like Mickey Flier. I requested Arusha Savannah and got Uzima, right over a people pen. I almost had a fit, but they wouldn't move me, and I got lazy about it the next day. But, I ended up loving it. We had all kinds of animals, and I really miss that view now. We are going again, and I've decided to just request Zebra trail, farther out on the horseshoe, if that makes sense. I don't want to be real close to the lobby.
To the other posters, I would never stay at AKL without a Savannah view. Sorry, but I would cut corners somewhere else, but it wouldn't be worth it to me. The public viewing areas are fine, but nothing, nothing beats having the animals outside your room.

I actually really like the pool views at AKL. I'm personally excited that I have one booked for the upcoming trip. If we were gonna spend a lot of time in the room or have a longer trip then I could see booking the Savannah view. Maybe we will get showered with PD :wizard: and get an upgrade like I got last fall. Plus I also really enjoy the whole AKL themeing and feeling I get when I stay there.

There is not a preferred floor for pool views. They have deluxe pool view rooms, but those are just larger rooms with daybeds in them and a few other minor things.

Hi,
I'm new...been lurking for awhile and got great information from this thread. Thanks to everyone. We are booked for July 25! I decided to all out and requested a deluxe room w/ bunk beds, Arusha Savannah, Zebra trail not more than half way down from the lobby for faster access to the elevator to the pool, and concierge :yay:
I know that's probably alot to ask, but I'm hoping!! The deluxe, concierge part is a surprise for my family.
Anyone know about the Magical Express? Is it good?
Thanks

Just changed my ressie yesterday from All Star Sport to AKL for our August trip. Because of the free dining the difference was $300. My DH and I talked about it and decided to go for it. We have never been to the AKL and when I told the CM who changed from ressie she chuckled and said that once we stayed at a deluxe we will not to go back to a value. We shall see. We are excited. Now my DS's are 9 & 7, they were not to pleased with the change but I think once we are there they will enjoy it.

Alright, I had posted a while back that DH and I would be staying at AKL...but you know...the longer you wait for codes, the more you talk yourself out of spending MORE money. So we booked at POR(wanted CSR) We've stayed at POR before, in the AB section(because of our family size) but never in the mansions section, so I requested there(just DH and me). But now I am having doubts. So here is the thing. We don't have a lot of money, well, we do actually, because we sold our house and we're living with a friend rent free while we build our new home, but we are saving all that money for the house, so even though we HAVE the money, we don't. ;) We booked POR for 5 nights for between $600- $700. AKL only has savannah view left and it's $1200+. So we would be paying double to switch. The only way I could get DH to do this would be to sacrifice my diamond for now. See...when we got married, we did just that, got married. No engagement, no ring, so DH had set aside $1000 for a ring(did you know JCPenny has a pre-owned section where you can get jewerly for dirt cheap??????) He was going to get the ring before our trip in May, if I told him that I would rather stay at AKL and get the ring another year, or later this year(if our house takes forever and we have longer to save.), he might agree that okay, let's go to AKL. So....is it worth it? Can I live without my ring, well yeah, I mainly just want one because everyone else has one and I want my bling. :teeth: Are we going to enjoy AKL SO much that it's worth 1200 for 5 nights? We plan on spending almost every afternoon at the resort by the pool, so we won't JUST be sleeping there. What do you experts think? This MIGHT be my only chance to stay there. Once we get into our new house(and mortgage :guilty: ) we probably won't ever be able to stay at a deluxe. I need advice and quick! If I need to switch then I need to do it NOW. Also, we are staying at POR in Sept. for 10 nights, so that's a facter too...

I've stayed at POR when it was called Dixie Landings, and we stayed at AKL this past May. To me, the price of AKL is definitely worth it. But it's up to you. Is this a once-in-a-lifetime trip? If so, I say go for AKL. If you go to WDW every few years, then maybe try for AKL another time. Or what about a split stay?

Amanda,
I think if you can swing it you guys would like it. I see it is your belated HM trip so I think you guys should go deluxe *** like you said you might not get the chance again for awhile. The pool area is really nice and it seems like you would have the time to spend in your room enjoying the savannah view and everything else AKL offers. Plus you have POR in the fall for 10 nights. I'm a push over though becuase I like AKL so much.

Mommy Poppins, you may just want to keep checking AKL to see if pool or st view opens up. Its only about $100-200 more than POR. :)

MommyPoppins,
I would agree with the above posters and if you are staying POR is Sept for 10 nights and you can afford AKL I would say go for it. Also if this is a belated Honeymoon I would think that would be even more reason to splurge. There is so much to do at AKL and it is very romantic. I grew up staying in moderates for the most part and fell in love with AKL last year. Just keep in mind you will have a great time no matter where you stay. Good luck in your choice and keep us posted.

I also requested a room w/ bunk beds and she said it was not a problem to make a request. I know it doesn't mean we will get it but she read my package details back to me and included the bunk bed standard room. We'll see won't we....

After crunching the numbers, if an AP rate comes out for our dates (June 10th - 18th) we can afford a Pool view room. We loved the pool view we had in 2004, (1020) Giraffe trail 1st floor, and I am wondering if any 1st floor rooms in that area have bunk beds? Specifically I would like a room number to request.

Well I've just upgraded from PORFQ to AKL and I'm sooooooo excited.
ktink, we just upgraded our vacation resort from POFQ to AKL as well. I'm very happy with the change. I was happy to be going to POFQ but AKL is just so much more encompassing, it seems. I can't wait to experience it.

We didn't have bunk beds in 2004, but my son would like bunk beds. We had first floor giraffe trail and loved it and wanted to know if there were bunk bed rooms to request in the same area.

I just found this thread! I'm going to AKL concierge 8/15-8-22. For anyone who has taken the culinary tour, how long is it and do you get to sample different menu items? I'm trying to decide if a 4:30 ADR for Boma will be feasible, thanks! :sunny:

In terms of move in day for AKL concierge, does the time of your arrival affect the "niceness" of the room you receive? My family made requests for a room overlooking the Arusha Savannah and somewhat in the middle of the horseshoe.
We haven't booked our flights yet but I doubt we'll arrive at the resort any earlier than 3pm. Does that leave yucky rooms?
During our Xmas stay at SSR, we checked in around 6pm and basically all the rooms with better locations were already taken. I assume that AKL would be different though, considering people are checking in on any day whereas DVC owners normally stay Sat-Fri or Sun-Sat, depending on the season.
Thanks,
Raina :sunny:

Kim,
How do you get Disney points?
My DH and I both have Disney Visa credit cards - they are two separate accounts. When you make purchases or pay bills using these cards, you get credited with 1% of total purchases. Since my DH uses his to order building supplies (lumber, shingles, etc.) he maxes his out every month ($10K) and gets 100 points [which translates into $100 dollars!] every month. He then justs pays off the bill with a company check, so he doesn't have to pay any interest. Sweet deal, really. We don't get a check for that money; the points get added up, and you can transfer them onto a 'Rewards" card, to use like a debit card, at any Disney location! So, you can use it for purchases at Disney stores, pay your resort bill, use it for lunch or dinner at the restaurants, etc.....

I loved AKL!!! I went in March of 05. I was doing a research paper on the hotel, and after some asking around, I got in touch with the general manager himself!!! He was really nice and VERY helpful. He told me he would send some information up to my room, and sure enough, when I got back that night, there was a letter, information packet, and lanyard with limited edition pins available only at AKL's grand opening!!! Plus it was really cool to wake up to a giraffe outside your window, my parents and I grew attached to one bongo that was always jumping the electric barriers.

Thanks for that bit of info. I've been wanting to get a Disney Visa but didn't know how the points worked or if it was worth charging on. All my credit cards are paid off, sooooo......I may have to get one and start getting those points for my upcoming trip. ;)

I have a ressie for a Deluxe Savvana view room. Last night DH asked "we aren't staying concierge?" More surprised (shocked) that I didn't book it rather than his own disappointment.
I didn't book concierge because I don't like the risk of not having a savanna view. I'm sure a pool view is nice, but the savanna view is what DS is really looking forward to. (so am I)
I read that if you book concierge you cannot guarantee savanna view, you might get pool or savvana. Is this right? Just want to be sure before we rule it out completely.
It's really a shame, IMO. I know Deluxe savanna view will be wonderful, but I do like the concierge assistance and lounge offerings.
bumping, hoping I will watch someone's eye and get some info.
I'm having a hard time find much info about AKL concierge. Is there a good source or page on this thread? I don't think we will be around too much, but am curious about the food offerings.
As I wrote before my current ressie is for a Deluxe Savanna view. We have a queen bed and bunk beds. If I switch to concierge will I still be able to get the bunk beds? I guess our room sounds great: savanna view and bunk beds but would like access to concierge without sacrificing those things. (I also like robes and turn-down, but guess --sigh-- I can live without that, too. ;) I do enjoy my vacations. :goodvibes
Can any advise?
TIA

tinknme,
We have breakfast at Boma on our first and last mornings at WDW. The food is very good, especially the made-to-order omelets. There are several South African dishes to try. Frunch, Boma's combo juice, is really good. Try the pressed pot of coffee (extra charge). It's one of the best cups of coffee at WDW.
mlwear,
We have stayed concierge at the AKL twice in a savannah room. Over the years, I have read quite a lot of posts stating that if they requested a savannah room, they received it. PM me if you want more info.

We love breakfast at Boma. If I had my way we would eat there every morning but my DH is not a big breakfast eater so I usually only do it 2 or 3 times a trip. I love their made to order omlets, the fruit and all the danish and the frunch is the best. Also, the pressed pot of coffee is really great.
melwear,
I know how you feel. I decided to book the concergie for our upcoming trip and take a chance of getting the savanaha room since it seems that the majority of people who asked for it got it. Of course I did send the planners an e-mail telling them how important a savanaha view was and they told me some pixie dust might just be arranged. I am still not counting on it since I don't want to be disapointed but the pool views I have seen look very nice and there is lots of viewing areas around. Since the main draw and the reason I no longer have to force my DH to go is the view of the animals I sure hope we get it. Since our first stay here he has not been resistant to returning as long as he can sit on the balcony and enjoy the animals some.
I will be sure to let you know how I make out when we get back on or about May 12th.
