Hi!

We were lucky enough to stay at AKL just a couple of days ago I loved the room we were in. We had all kinds of animals grazing right outside our balcony. I don't remember which section it was in, but our room number was #5347. It was a deluxe savannah view....Good Luck!

Hidden Mickey's
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the main entrance to the lobby between the outer and inner doors is a mural on the wall of a large creature. One of the spots on it is Mickey Mouse.
Enter the lobby and look at the 2nd chandelier on the right side. The light is made up of objects that look like shields. One of the shields has a pattern of circles running up its center. The second from the bottom circle is a hidden Mickey.
On the wall in Rock formation on the staircase leading from Lobby to Boma Restaurant.
On any of the floor except for 1 and 6, there and big wooden poles that "keep the floor up." There are three poles with create a great Mickey Mouse picture.
On the back of the of the rocks that support the slide for the swimming pool are two Mickey's. Both are about 3 feet off of the ground.

Magical Mountain Staff Review
My boyfriend and I stayed here for a week(Oct 16-23. We had such a fantastic time! We were lucky enough to have a Savannah View Room, which is a must for staying there. Our room over-looked the Sunset Savannah, one of the three functioning Savannahs at the resort. As soon as we entered our room, we noticed there were Ostriches outside. A little while later I heard the brush rustling, and noticed a Giraffe strolling by! What an amazing site! To see Giraffes, Ostriches, Warthogs(aka Pumbaa from Lion King), Zebras, and Gazelles every day was the most amazing thing. But that was not the only thing that made the resort so special. The staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful. Our first two days, everyone we encountered asked if this was our first visit to AKL (which it was) and welcomed us to the resort. One day when I was in the resort's store (which is fabulous) one of the salesmen explained to me how a certain pottery is made and that it is made by a Zulu tribe in Africa. On another occaision, one of the cashiers explained to me why there are colored stones outside the front doors, and explained the whole design scheme of the resort. It was so fascinating. If you have the opportunity to stay at AKL, do not pass it up! --Kelly Coyne

This is one of my favorite resorts on Disney property. The theme is unbeatable! My mother and I booked a savanah view room which was amazing. We were on the first floor, so the animals were right below us. We opted to skip the parks at times just to sit on our balcony and enjoy the view! The only thing that I know some people (including my father) would complain about, is the only transportation for this resort is the bus system, which wasn't at all bad when we were down there. I highly recommend this resort!

We loved the Savannah View Rooms, the restaurant "Jiko", the music, the people.... in short we loved itall. We've stayed there three times now and would go back again and again. It is definitly worth the extra money though to get the savannah view room. Our first stay we didn't, and man did we regret that. The Lobby will have you starring, awe struck and speechless. We've enjoyed three meals at "Jiko" and everything was delicious! One of the things that I enjoyed the most about the food there is that since it's generally African cuisine, it's not food you can find at your local steakhouse. While I very much enjoy that kind of food, when I go away on vacation, I want something different. I am never disappointed! Yup, waking up with a giraffe or an ostrich outside your window is a thrill, but there's a lot more to AKL than that!

I think that the morning safari is offered on Sunday and Thursday for guest staying concierge -- is that correct? I want to know if you stay at the hotel CL for a few nights and then change hotels to another onsite can you book the safari on a day you are not staying at the hotel. For example, can I stay AKL CL Monday and Tuesday and then change to GF and still be able to sign up for the Thursday morning safari?

Ok, Kimmar067, here it goes.

Got to AKL at noon, went directly up to CL to check in. Room was not ready so we went to Epcot. Came back, room 5227 Arusha Trail was ready and waiting. Great room! Lots of zebra, kudu and giraffes. Took lots of pictures. Ran up to CL to see the eats. Was happy to see wings and chicken tenders to noche on. Went to MK and watched the fireworks while eating ice cream (best thing to do!).

Next morning, got ready for the Sunrise Safari - met everyone at the Sunset Lounge and headed out. Our guide, Mike is a zookeeper and gave us a thorough account of all the animals in their buildings.

We got to Kilamingaro and boarded the jeep. The ride was fantastic. They went nice and slow and allowed us to take tons of pics and videoed the entire trip. No hippos, but the gators were out, flamingos, baboons, rhinos, elephants and yes, the lions.

The male lion was grunting and struting to let everyone know he was awake. The female lion was watching him (giving the male that look that I give my husband when he's acting foolish)!

After the KS, we went to the schoolhouse inside Tusker House and had a bountiful assortment of foods. Everything was excellent! A bit rich, though. The passionfruit juice was delicious and the french toast was excellent. We loved the entire event. Well worth it.

Did the entire AK and then went back to the room and then to the pool. Love the zero entry.....

Then we headed down to Boma for dinner. Wow. What an assortment of everything.

I liked the Mac and cheese and the pasta salad. The desserts were very good, but very filling. THen we headed to Epcot.

We did Soarin' - I never realized that I am a bit "afraid of heights." When I got into the seat and realized no floor (okay) but know front bar, I got scared. But after about 10 seconds after we "took off", I was okay. (I never knew that about myself).

Illuminations was interesting: we sat at the cantina in Mexico and kids tried to sit in front of us. I asked them nicely to move or sit down. However, a small kid was watching the fireworks and the parents were about 10 feet behind him. They were not diciplined enough, and slowly the mom stood in back of the kid and blocked everyone's view. A woman approached the mom and the mom started slurring curses and using a finger gesture to the woman. The mom was out-of-control screaming and yelling. The grandparents had to restrain her. (what a nut).

Next day, got up late - arround 8:00 and went to CL. WE could not find out MVMCP tickets, so Laura at AKL CL helped us. She is/was terrific. Very cordial and very helpful. We headed to MGM and spent the day. We were too late for the Stunt Spectacular (but we will be back in April).

Then we headed to CA Grill for dinner (my favorite). After that, went to MK and did the MVMCP till about 11:30.

NExt morning, we headed to Cindy's Castle for Breakfast with the Princesses. My DS9 was not so thrilled but I was tickled pink. That's a nice Character Breakfast.

Back to AKL, went in the pool, shop the gift shop (got a great AKL towel) and then packed to go home. Before our car picked us up, I went to CL to say goodbye and thank you to Laura. She was the best.

That's it. I hope it wasn't too long.

P.S. We have stayed at AKL before and love the smells, the restaurants and the decor.

Kimmer - I love the pics, makes me a bit homesick though.

I love the lanterns and chandeliers at AKL!

The Christmas tree was beautiful.

We love the room. I think the 3rd floor is the best (we had that last time), but we did enjoy the perks of CL. The Arusha trail is excellent. However, the Sunset trail had the baby giraffe. The giraffe looks big until you see it with it's mama.

What's a Zebra Dome? I read the thread before going and someone wrote that Mara had ZD's but we couldn't find them. Is it a dessert? Also, I didn't see the tiramasu, we must have been there on an off night.

Are the zebra domes grayish brown with a chocolate stripe and filled with a truffle and a cake bottom?

We went to Mara for a quick linner (lunch/dinner). It was good.

The best smell came from below our room. We couldn't figure it out because Jiko and Boma are on the Sunset Trail side, but the smell was driving my DH crazy. He could wait for our 6:30 Jiko ressie, so we went to Boma at 5:15. They took us right away - even after my DS dropped the pager in the pond!

The Zebra Domes at the Mara are in the refrigerator cases They are in a clear plastic take out box and you get 4 of them I believe.

All I can say is WOW what a great thread. My DH and I will be returning to the AKL for our 4th stay and this time our first stay at CL and can't wait. We arrive on April 30th and leave May 9th. It seems from this thread that all the 6th floor rooms are smoking so if we don't smoke we should get a savanaha view is that right? Since my DH has lung problems and I have asthma I have asked for a non-smoking room for medical reasons. Also, do you e-mail or phone the CM in club level to let them know of any special requests for the room as well or just have it on the reservation? My DH will be using an ECV and I don't want a room with a king bed since I will toss him out of bed at night with all my flipping around :Pinkbounc Any suggestions will be appreciated and all of your pictures make me so glad we choose to go back to this resort. It will be our first stay using an ECV and we are kind of nervous about that.
Also, how early do you contact the CM in club level to let them know you are coming since we booked through a travel agent?
Thanks for taking the time to answer me in advance.

This thread is getting me excited about our May trip. Anyone have any suggestions for room locations? We had a pool view last time, but will probably do savannah view this trip. I want to be fairly close to the pool and bus stop too. Should we ask for Sunset savannah lobby view?

Hi Padisneylover (Kathe)To answer your questions:

do you e-mail or phone the CM in club level to let them know of any special requests for the room as well or just have it on the reservation?
You can reach CM's in IP at 407 938-4755. If they are busy or shorthanded they will have voice mail on. Call back. Don, Juanita and Sue are fantastic Let them know your requests for room location and preference for two queens, non-smoking and why. King rooms are very, very hard to get. They only have approx. 16 king rooms resort wide so I would not worry if I were you. :flower:

It will be our first stay using an ECV and we are kind of nervous about that.

On our last visit this past October my DH used a ECV - it was not a problem at all. Are you bringing it with you or renting from one of the off site companys? Either way, you will be treated with respect and warmth at AKL. The ECV we found fit pefectly in our room next to the day bed. We backed it up there and could plug it in for charging. It was not in our way at all. The elevators are a bit quick so I would hold the door for DH when we had to use them. Going up to the lounge was not a problem it was close and everyone is so friendly. The bus service was wonderful and the drivers were very kind with DH and loading the ECV. He was never rushed and always made to feel like he was their main concern. You will have a wonderful stay. If there is anything you need just ask concierge, they will be happy to help you. Be sure to arrange all your PS at right away if you have not already. You can now make them 6 months out and IP will take care of everything for you. . :cloud9:

I hope this helps. :) If you have any other questions please feel free to ask me either through this thread or PM me. Also, you might want to take a look at the Lounge Lizard thread on the Community Board. There is lots of information and many very friendly people over there. Just do a search for Lizard Lounge. We are a fun friendly group who like to stay conciege whenever possible. We also stay value and moderate and sometimes even off property. ;)

Wow angle thanks for all the information. Your comments about using the ECV at AKL made me feel better. We do so love this resort and orginally made reservations for the Poly but just could not get comfortable with it so yesterday changed our reservations and feel so much better about this. There is something about AKL that keeps drawing us back. I rented the ECV from Walker Medical through our TA and it is to be delivered the day we arrive. Most of my dining reservations are done thanks to my more than patient TA and I do have two I think I want to change but decided to let the CM's do that for me. I belive I need to wait for the TA to send me my new reservation numbers right before I can contact the AKLC CM's and she should have them by tomorrow. Were you able to do either one of the safarias with the ECV at the lodge? DH could walk some if necessary but once we got to the park after the sunrise one he would need the ECV in order to get around there.
I will also go and check out the other thread you told me about. Thanks again for all the helpful information.

This thread is getting me excited about our May trip. Anyone have any suggestions for room locations? We had a pool view last time, but will probably do savannah view this trip. I want to be fairly close to the pool and bus stop too. Should we ask for Sunset savannah lobby view?

Chances are, you will probably get a good location if you request the above! It isn't too far off the trails and fairly convenient....

Thanks!

Kathe, Your DH will not have a problem using the ECV and going on either the Sunrise or Sunset Wanyama Safari. We have done both using a ECV. The sunrise they bus you over to Animal Kingdom Park. The ECV goes along. When you get off the bus they have it unloaded for use to get to the area where the safari starts. If you DH can walk a little then he can just walk right onto the safari vehicle. He will be able to sit in the regular seats and enjoy himself. At the end of the safari his ECV will be waiting. Please let the WDW staff and CM's know that this is your first visit with a ECV. They will help you and give you suggestions as well as explain what all to expect. After the safari you go over to Tusker house for a wonderful breakfast buffet. It is a short distance away, but he will be in his ECV. When you are done you have the day to enjoy the AK park. When you are ready to return to AKL just go to the bus stop for AKL. They now have new busses that lower to you so a ECV or wheelchair just rolls right up a ramp. I hope you find mostly those busses as they are so user friendly.

As for the fantastic Sunset-Wanyama Safari. You meet in the concierge lounge. When the group is ready you go down to the front entrance. They will take your DH ECV and move it to where they will be dropping you off. The tour vehicle is a little different as it has seats that flip down for 10. The top of the vehicle will raise when you get out on the savannah. Let the CM's know what your hubands physical needs are and they will help place him in the vehicle in the best place for his needs.

After the safari they will have the ECV waiting for him to take to Jiko's for dinner. Don't worry they will take very good care of both of you.

Kathe, You might want to check out the Disabilities thread. They have great people over there and offer many suggestions on touring and enjoying you vacation with a disability. They also give information on what entrance to use for each ride in the park and how to find it. WDW is one of the best places for people with disabilities to vacation. I think they have thought of just about everything.

Have a good day.

I spent a week there in Ocotber and I had booked a pool view and requested Zebra Trail and I got an upgrade to the Uzima Savanah I was in room 3514 and I did not feel like it was too far away from anything. I can't believe the amount of animals I saw outside my balcony everyday it was just amazing. At night the gazelles loved to sleep in the tall grass outside my balcony. Anways here are a few pics of the view I had from the room and the animals:

Here is a pic of my room from the Uzima Pool Savanah Lookout (It is on the left hand side of the split 2nd from the bottom with the red railing). It was a nice location becuase I could look to the left side very easily.

Okay here I am to add some more photos, but I thought I should first tell about my AKL experiences!!! My first ever visit to the Lodge was in June of 2001 shortly after it opened for dinner at Boma's (back in the day where you had to be a guest at AKL or have dinner ressies to visit). After dinner that night I checked out the Zawadi Marketplace and bought some of those expensive postcards wrapped in plastic and I told myself one day I would stay there.

In Sept/Oct 2004 I suprised my mom (and later my sister) with a stay at AKL in a pool view room (room 4428 Zebra Trail). I was blown away by the resort and fell in love and knew I had to come back. So in Oct 2005 I spent a week there again in what was to be a Pool View room, but upon getting to my room I realized I had recieved an upgrade (no mention was made at the AKL front desk of an upgrade by me or the CM (room 3514 Zebra Trail Uzima Savannah)). Well I was re-blown away and I now have hours of video footage of all the happenings on the Uzima savannah during my stay and plenty of photos to go around.

Here are some of my photos I hope they can help anyone out who is thinking about AKL. The detail that went into the resort is just unbelieveable it has quickly become one of my favorites if not my favorite resort.

I have two questions that I'm hoping some AKL concierge veterans might be able to help me out with:

1) are the concierge rooms "standard" or "deluxe" rooms?
2) is the Sunrise Safari only offered on certain days of the week, or is it offered every day?

Thanks so much!

Hi Wintergreen -

The concierge rooms are deluxe rooms. The are a little larger than a standard room and come with extra amenities. Such as telephone in bathroom, make-up mirror, and robes.

The Sunrise Safari is only offered on certain days of the week. I am sorry but I do not remember which days. It is wonderful and certainly worth the money. :flower:

Have a wonderful dream-filled day! :)

I did not know that....very interesting.

We were in AKL CL two weeks ago and we had the best room ever....Room 5425.

Room is real close to the Lobby without being too close. You have a great view of Arusha rock and you have a good view of all the feeding areas.

As soon as I can figure out how to post pictures I will.

I belive the hot air balloons may have been from Orlando area. There is a place there where you can take a sunrise trip and it flys over the park from what I understand. You see them a lot of mornings early from your balconys at the AKL or so that has been our experience.

I would opt for an upper floor pool-view room....this way you will be high enough to see animals, get great views of the pool area, and you probably won't be too far out on one of the trails, so far away from the bus, Mara, Zawadi Marketplace, etc....

Ok you guys seem to be the experts on this place, and we are planning our first stay at AKL in December. When booking the room, what should I request.

I know I want a Savannah view, but I would like to be close to the bus stop and the restaurants.

So share your knowledge with me, pleeze!!! :flower3:

Thanks so much
Laura

Laura,
You want to ask for a room on the Zebra trail since that hall has an elevator that takes you directly down to the level of the food court/pool and restruant. Personally we ask for a room next to the second set of elevators in that wing for that reason. The only problem with it is it can be a long hike to the bus. For me it is not a problem since I enjoy looking out of all the windows as I go along and it changes from moment to moment so the walk though long never seems that way. Also, we have perfered the 4th floor since it seems to have less traffic then the one on third floor which everybody walks down in order to get to the lobby or buses. Your best bet might be to just list what you want and leave it up to the room assigner. Even though we have never been on the Arusha view we have never been disappointed in our location and we have only stayed savanaha views. Enjoy your stay there it is a great resort.

I have a std view booked for 3nights in the middle of our Aug vacation. Is there a certain area I should request/avoid?

I have a std view (smoking guaranteed w/ a king bed requested) booked for my solo trip later this month. I got a great rate of $110 a night & I was planning on keeping the std room & crossing my fingers for the entire flight down & hope for an upgrade.

If there was no "automatic" upgrade, I was going to ask about paying for one......

Now, because I'm traveling solo, I don't quite know how much I'll be in the room & I can't say that I'd be devistated if I didn't have a savannah view, but.....the little voice inside my head is telling me that mabye I should consider upgrading before I leave.

So, if one of you AKL experts were in my situation, what would you do? Would you keep the std view at the bargain proce of $110 a night & hope for a visit from the upgrade fairy or would you pay the extra $80 a night for the savannah view?

All of your opinions would be incredibly appreciated!

TIA! :flower:

I have to say I would pay the extra $80 if it were me only because I really enjoy getting up early in the morning and sitting on my balcony watching the animals right outside my room. Even at night when I come back there is usually activity to be seen and noises from the animals that make sitting out there unwinding from the busy park days worth the $80. That is my own opinion only. Of course if you had standard you could still go to any of the lookouts and enjoy the same thing. But there is something great about being able to sit out in your PJ's with the coffee, paper and animals.

Good Morning everyone
I love your picture HLauburn !!
We are going to be staying at ALK for the first time . We are not going to be there until April 25th and we can't wait . Is there any must do's with little ones that are 4 1/2 ? How is the transportaion to Disney World , and the Animal Kingdom ?
We are lucky enough to be leaving ALK after 4 days and going on their 7 day Eastern cruise on the Magic
Also can anyone tell me how The Whispering Canyon is and will it be a complete pain to get there ? We also have reservations for the Hoop Dee Doo revue can anyone tell me where that is in contrast to the WL ?
I really appreciate any of you help .
Have a wonderful day everyone .

Is there any must do's with little ones that are 4 1/2 ?
They have a whole board that lists all of the neat things you can do at the lodge like a story teller kids can make these bead braclets....I can't remember everything off the top of my head, but they will tell you about it when you check-in.

How is the transportaion to Disney World , and the Animal Kingdom ?
I have stayed at a number of the disney resorts and I think AKL has the best transportation. Don't let anyone tell you they are so far away that it takes forever to get anywhere. I think it takes 20 minutes tops to get to MK. Think of all the resorts that have multiple stops and combine resorts. AKL is just for AKL.

Also can anyone tell me how The Whispering Canyon is and will it be a complete pain to get there ?
I have never eaten at WCC, but I would allow about an 1hr-1hr and 30 min to get there using WDW transportation. Depending what time you are eating at you could take a bus from AKL to AK and then a bus from AK to WL. Otherwise you could take a bus from AKL to MK and then MK to WL. The possiblities are endless for that.

We also have reservations for the Hoop Dee Doo revue can anyone tell me where that is in contrast to the WL ?
It is at Fort Wilderness which is very close by to WL. WL and FW share busses.

Hopefully, that helps some.

When I stayed at AKL and did Hoop Dee Doo we took the bus to the Magic Kingdom and then the boat to Fort Wilderness. When you get off the boat it is just up from the dock and very easy to find. Also the boat ride is a pleasant trip and a different mode of transportation to try.
The trip to AK is very short about 5-10 mins and the one to the Magic Kingdom I never timed but never felt very long. I agree with the above poster don't let anybody knock the transportation from the AKL it is really great no matter where you want to go.

Nancyg56
01-11-2006, 09:18 AM
We just got back (so sad I am) and felt that the transportation was very good. The only time it seemed to take too long was the time we just missed the bus to Epcot. A call informed us the bus arrived every 30 minutes. We were never waiting to long, and the ride was a good time to relax and enjoy the view. I never felt as though I was too far away from anything.

Hi AKL Fans :sunny:

I just booked for December and I'm really excited about it :goodvibes

Looks like it will be myself, DD12 Noel with SuAnne & her DD13 Hayley again!! (We did WL in Dec 04)

I booked AKL Concierge December 13th - 17th and then 2 nights at GF RPC

The 14th is Noel's BD and we are thinking about doing the new cindy's dinner... and the 18th is my BD - so I am not sure what we will do at GF on that day.

So glad this thread is here... other wise I would go crazy with the wait ::yes::

You know, we went to Disney at Christmas 2004 and we could have stayed anywhere but picked WL because we thought AKL would not be cozy or christmassy enough. (usually we go there in the summer)

But one day during our stay at WL we popped in to AKL and man was it gorgeous, even nicer than WL in my opinion. I decided then that one year we would try it in December. I am happy it is happening sooner than expected :goodvibes

Just read this whole thread and I think I still have one question?

We are booked for Savannah rooms but I wondered if any one floor is better than any other? We are hoping for Arusha Rock and I heard somewhere that the 2nd and 3rd floor are "closer" to the animals than 4th?

Hope someone answers!

Cass
01-12-2006, 12:09 AM
Yes, well the lower you are the closer you are to the ground so you can see them better, but the higher you are the more of an expansive view you have of the savanna.

(ie) from a higher floor I have seen a giraffes legs, and his head is hidden by the tree... but then go down to the 3rd floor and I can see the whole giraffe under the tree.

It is a trade off... I would not say one is better than the other, they are both good for different reasons.

If you want to meet Don (AKA - Donald Duck), just ask when his schedule is then pick a meeting time. He'll most certainly do his great Donald Duck impression so take the kids with you to meet him. I found out beforehand when he'd be in then had the CM in the lounge to call and ask if it was a good time to meet him? I also got to meet Sue this way. Andrea and Juanita (aka Diane) are terrific as well. Juanita used to be in the lounge so when I got a call from her the next year to help with ADR's and such I didn't know I was talking to the same girl - LOL! Here I was praising about the sweetest girl in the world named Juanita that worked in the lounge and wanted to know if she was still there. Then she laughed and told me it was her. Priceless!

I just booked our very first stay at AKL for the first week of April!!! :cool1:

It will be an adult "girls" only "all about me" vacation so we splurged and booked a savannah view room using the AP discount. We will probably even skip the parks for a couple of days and enjoy the resort amenities and the beautiful animals!!

Can someone tell me the best location to request for a savannah view room?

We really don't mind some walking, we would just like a room that offers a lovely view with the best chance of being able to sit on the balcony, relax, and animal watch.

Thanks for the help! Can't wait to stay at AKL!!!

DH and I always request Zebra trail and leave the rest up to the CM's and have never been disappointed. The advantage to the Zebra trail is that it is closest to the pool and restruants. We also perfer not to be on 3rd floor since that is the main floor for everybody going to the buses daily. Enjoy your first stay it is a great place. party:

Thanks very much for the advice!

Are there certain floors that are better to be on than others? I thought I had read somewhere (maybe the UG or here) that savannah view isn't worth the extra money if you are assigned to certain floors. For instance, if I recall what I read, the savannah view can be obscured by trees if you are too low and if you are too high, the animals are too far away to make it worth the additional dollars.

Also, can someone tell me the difference between a standard savannah view and a deluxe savannah view?

Thanks alot! :)

We have stayed on both 4th and 5th floor and I didn't think it made us to far away from the animals. In fact the 5th floor had the advantage of being up a little higher and allowed us to see a little further. We have never had a tree problem in anyone of our three rooms there. I stayed with a friend and her two children last year in a deluxe savannah room and didn't see much difference from our standard savannah room. It was a little larger and had a little larger balcony but I don't think I would pay the extra money again if I wasn't staying CL like we are going to this time. Some of the rooms supposedly have a couch in them but this one didn't. Hope this helps some.

Just stopping by to say  I just finished the thread. DH and I are getting away for my birthday in May(24th-29th). I think I have talked myself into staying at AKL...IF there is a good Fl. Res. rate. I'm hoping for a good rate for a savannah view, but if not then maybe we can afford a pool view. If we have to go pool view I am going to request, non-smoking zebra trail, and cross my fingers for a upgrade. :wizard: DH and I have never stayed deluxe always mod. or value. It would be such a treat and we loved the resort from when we ate at Boma. Though we didn't too much care for Boma, I did LOVE my Victoria Falls Mist. :drinking1

Hi! Can anyone suggest a good room area or floor (pool view) to request? We've stayed at AKL, but in Savannah view, so I'm lost about pool view. We'll just hope for some pixie dust at check in. Thanks!

This was the pool view we had from room 4428 Zebra Trail in Fall 04. The room was about 4-6 rooms down from the elevators/windows over looking the Arusha savannah.

DH and I always request Zebra trail and leave the rest up to the CM's and have never been disappointed. The advantage to the Zebra trail is that it is closest to the pool and restruants. We also perfer not to be on 3rd floor since that is the main floor for everybody going to the buses daily. Enjoy your first stay it is a great place. party:

...I agree! Fifth floor Zebra Trail is a nice location.......lucky YOU! :yay:

For being UN-offical there sure is alot of information here.

We have a 3 night/4 day trip planned for Memorial Day weekend. We are sending our son off for an international trip and treating our DD to a Happy "15" by staying at AKL with our DVC points. We too have requested Zebra Trail Savannah view. I look forward to seeing more pictures from rooms and listening to stories of those who travel before us.

For those of you who have been concierge guests, do you feel like it was a positive experience? We are booked there for August and I have some hesitation because of a past visit with some snotty cast members, although this was not as a concierge guest. I can deal with not having a monorail but I really don't want to be bothered by arrogant or unfriendly cast members which has only ever happened at this particular resort.

We just returned from AKL and were lucky enough to stay concierge level. I cannot sing enough praises for the staff, beginning with the members of the IPO, and then to the wonderful CM's in the lounge. Because my children are all adults, this was the first real "family" vacation we have had in years, and this was an ideal way to experience it. We knew where we wanted to be each day, and so the IPO only needed to make our ADR's for us, and then the changes to the ressies as we got closer to our stay and added family members who were joining us for meals. Once we arrived, the CM's made us feel that we were the only people who needed attention, remembered who we were, and stopped to chat a bit as we congregated in the lounge. Our room request was Savannah view, not one in particular, and a connecting door if possible so that my little princess could go back and forth. We got the wonderful view, but no connecting door. I walked to the concierge desk, and asked if it was possible, and explained that we would not have a problem if it was not. Don checked his computer, and BOOM...new room. Our who stay ws about the little things that enhanced a vacation. My DH, who was a little persnickety about total price of the stay, had to cry uncle and admit that this was the best way for us to accomodate the needs of our family.

I must admit that everyone in the AKL took a minute to greet us, and ask if we needed anything, or to respond to questions...sometimes even before they were asked. CM's who tend the animals will often give info if it looks like you want to know what they are doing or why.

Either way, I think that you will enjoy your stay at this lovely resort, and if you encounter any CM's who are "snootier than thou" it is not the norm. I know that we di not have any negative experiences throughout our stay.

Hi Kimmar,
I've been digging through this thread...I'm looking for the AKL concierge email link. I thought I read it once, but can't seem to find it. Anyway, I would like to book the sunrise safari. We added AKL onto a Poly stay (because of this great thread) I haven't heard from the AKL concierge staff yet and I would like to get in touch with them since March is coming quickly! Thank you! And thanks for all the great info. I'm getting very excited!

I don't have kids, but we really liked the flamingo feeding we saw on our 04 trip. This last trip though I did not see the Flamingos out once. As far as how close you can get to the animals it really depends on where you are located and where the animals decide to go.

Hey everyone. We are going to AKL in June and can't wait. We are lucky enought to be able to stay concierge level this trip and I had a quick question about the rooms. I think I read somewhere that the Concierge pool views are the smoking rooms? So all non-smoking are savannah views? We've requested non smoking but haven't requested view yet. Thanks!

DD8 really enjoyed the Flamingo feeding. It started off by teaching the children how flamingos, and pelicans eat. The kids are divided into two groups and take turns with their "make believe" pelicans, and flamingos "eating" food in trays of water. Everyone had a turn. This was a "bead activity". So everyone who participated received a special bead for their necklace.(There are several bead activities throughout the day at AKL) Following this, everyone gathered around the flamingo pond as a CM fed the flamingos. It was fun to watch!

Would it be frowned upon if we brought him?

Do you already have an image host that you have uploaded your pictures to? If you have, then you can simply click on the icon above (that shows up when you hit "reply") that kinda looks like a yellow envelope and copy and paste the url of your picture. That will insert your image into your post.

You'll need a web host (like photobucket.com) to download them. Then, you can just paste and copy them on your posts (make sure to add before the address and right after it).

Only YOU know your child BEST. Seriously, the safari lasts for almost an hour, stopping quite frequently to talk about their wildlife program, feedings, veterinary care, exchange progam, etc. Also, it is pretty early in the morning, so, again, you are the best judge of your child's behavior.....(believe me, I've heard HORROR stories on the DIS regarding this issue).

Hope this helps....

We took our three year old in November. We were hesitant to do so because of some of the stories we had heard. It turned out wonderful, she enjoyed the whole thing so much and did well other than an occasional "look at that!". The safari, Lion King show, and meeting the characters is the things she remembers best about the whole trip. (there was a minor argument between her and our 8 year old when she kept insisting the zebras were called "Marty" but he just let that one go and gave me the "little sisters aren't they silly" look)

We took our 4 year old DGD a few weeks ago, and she was fine. She loved looking at the animals, and there were times that she spotted them before our host did. You know how your little one will hold up to an excursion that lasts at least an hour. I can tell you that she did not want to go on the Kilamanjaro safari after this Sunrise Safari, so we passed.

We have reserved a standard room at AKL for 3/23-3/30 - changed from CB - I have a couple of questions. My 13 year old daughter wanted to stay at CB because of the pool and water slide (would have preferred Boardwalk, but thats a little beyond our budget) - the AK pool doesn't look like it has much of a water slide - any comments? Also, I assume the room is little more roomy than that at CB- true? Any other suggestions for travelling with a 13 year old would be welcome!

Hi -

Has anyone else checked in at night recently?
We will arrive about 11pm - concierge will be closed.
I am wondering what time we should expect our bags, and say we go down to the jacuzzi to wait - will our bags magically get inside our room - or do we have to wait in our room?

:cheer2:

We checked in late, around 9:30 - but concierge was still open. We went down to eat a late dinner at Boma and when we came back our bags - from ME - were in our room. Presto!

Hi guys! I just got back yesterday from 8 wonderful days at WDW. We were at BWV Sunday through Friday. I was expecting to love it...but, I didn't. It was okay...beautiful resort really...but I just didn't love it. We moved to AKL on Friday through Monday...Aahhhhh! Now, AKL I LOVE! We were booked in Standard View but upgraded to savanna at no charge. Our room overlooked the small savanna to the left and was very near one of the 'people pens' you read about. I don't know if I'd have been crazy over the location if we'd paid for savanna view, but since we only paid for standard I was perfectly fine with it. Although the people pen was a little unsightly, we saw a lot of animals...giraffe, ankole cattle, vultures, cranes, some kind of boar or pig, and ostrich. Often they were all in view at the same time! Wow! Bus service was pretty good. We waited a while for a couple of buses (maybe 20 minutes), but considering how slow the parks were last week I'm sure they just weren't running as many buses. It was no big deal and most of the time we waited less than 10 minutes anyway. (I hated the BWV buses btw. The AKL and DtD buses run BWV, Swan, Dolphin, YC, BC...OMG, 5 stops, eek!) All the AKL CMs we encountered were very friendly. Last time we stayed there we thought they weren't as friendly as other CMs, not unfriendly, just not AS friendly. Not so this time, they were great. A housekeeping CM delivered a cookie bouquet to our room that I had ordered for DH's birthday...she would not even accept the tip I tried to give her.

As soon as I get my pics uploaded and organized I'll post some!

We had checked into coneirge at that time also; there was no problems with our bags. However, there WAS a problem with check-in, as fas as 'concierge'/'non-concierge', but that is a different story.....(see page 1-2 of this thread :teeth: )

Glad to hear you had a great trip. I can't wait to see your pics. I had a friend stay at AKL and was upgraded to the Sunset Savannah and said the same thing you did she would have been dissapointed if she had paid for the view she had. All of the resorts that share busses tend to turn me off...I can't imagine having to do 5 stops at seperate resorts. Did you dine at Jiko on the trip?

Thanks Kimmer - I'll go read page 1-2.

I am also wondering if the bunk beds are big enough for an adult. I want mom to be the most confortable - and it might be nice if she had the bottom bunk, rather than sharing the queen size.

Any opinions?

15 Days!

15 Days!

With whom would she be sharing the queen bed? Last Feb my DS's slept in the bunks - my older one (16 - y - o) was about 5'7" at the time, and he was comfortable on the bottom bunk....(also: the deluxe room has a couch that opens to a single bed!)
