I read this in another post-that if you speak to one of the CM at the ALK (really speak to them-have a conversation-that they'll give you a card from the country in Africa that they're from, and some folks collect them. I hadn't heard of this before. Anyone else? :confused3

PPP - my DNeph (8) had several of the CMs give him cards of their home countries in Africa - he had just finished studying Africa in school, so he was interested in finding out what languages they all spoke (they each speak MANY languages fluently!). These young CMs were WONDERFUL !!! - they really took the time to speak to him, list their languages and even indicate things on the cards for him like where their home towns were located, or which parts of their country the different languages were spoken in. I was impressed at every activity (and I think we did almost all of them) how the CMs handled things like making sure every child felt included - and even how they got some of the somewhat older kids to join in the fun - I just can't say enough about how much these young people enhanced our stay at AKL !!! :thumbsup2 If I lived closer, I'd be spending as many weekends there as I could finagle! - which is probably why a front desk CM told us their weekends are almost always at 90% capacity - with many return FL guests. :smooth:

Kimmar-Thank you!
Your friend is in for a great time. I have yet to go to S. Africa. Mostly East and Central. The Music is amazing! WHat a great language to be able to communicate with. There are lots of markets and things with homemade music-cassettes. Not to mention all the regulars-Ladysmith Black Mombaza, Miriam Makeba...There's afropop. all really wonderful....
...she collected donations (monetary) and things like toothbrushes & toothpaste, books, skin lotion, pencils, notebooks, t-shirts, and other goodies for the kids....a total of 15 boxfuls of stuff!
...You can see I'm a big fan of WL, so I've been reluctant to move..but the time has come!!!
....hee-hee-hee, that's okay, I won't tell...if you look at my tag, you'll notice that I am the ORIGINAL keeper of the WL FAQ thread...it is my first 'love', but the AKL, its baby brother is my 2nd fave.....

mmm those Zebra Domes look good. Anyone know how much it is to get them delivered to the room the first night we're there? We'll be checking in around lunchtime (I'm assuming the room won't be ready yet), going back to MGM for F! and I would like them to be there when we return.

I don't know how much it would cost, but if you are looking for a cheap way to do it they are for sale at The Mara in the grab and go section you get 3 of them plus 2 of the mousse crunch desserts....you could just put them in your fridge. I'm sure you could arrange something through private dining as well. You can just call AKL and ask to be connected with PD and explain to them what you are thinking of doing.

I am not a regular poster to this thread but feel it's time to share some thoughts. First, this thread was great in helping us decide to pick AKL for our trip last year. Once there, AKL became our resort of choice for this year's 30th anniversary celebration. And now to my point.....shouldn't this thread be moved to the Community Board? People interested in learning about AKL have to now search through hundreds of non-relevant posts. Let the flames begin.

I've been researching AKL for an upcoming trip -- and it really did take me almost one week to read through this thread. It is great and informative and fun, but IMO it is getting really long and hard to read through if you are just looking for answers to your questions.

I agree with you Wendy. I don't think reading the entire thread is nescessary if you have a question(s) just post them as they might not even be covered yet(or up to date). Maybe kimmar can add that in the OP. One thing about reading a larger thread from the beginning is that a lot of things tend to change over time and some of it may not be as relevant as it once was.
There is also an Offical AKL FAQ Thread (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=68312) if people are looking for quick and basic resort information that is orgaznized in the first few posts I believe.
Everyone here is friendly and willing to answer questions (there is a lot of AKL experience here) so I'm sending out a :welcome: to any lurkers or anyone else for that matter to come and join in.

Seriously, I think this thread has helped us tremendously in planning our next trip. We had never been to AKL before, went to dinner at Boma's, and were enchanted by the place.
If anyone has any photos / reviews of the kids resort activities I would love it if you could post them. We're going in March 2007 and my daughter has lots of questions about the resort.
Thanks again!

I don't even know where to begin! This was our "treat" part of our 10 day trip. Since there are five of us we are required to stay in the deluxe view. :goodvibes We had originally planned on a non park day there but it didn't happen. The children loved exploring for the hidden mickey's. My 6 year old is an expert at this now. We didn't finish the list though. We loved our view so much that we didn't go on the safari ride at AK. I have probably over 50 pictures of our view. What would you like to see??? :bitelip:

Also, does anyone remember what park hours are like in early March? We've been to WDW in October, with very limited park hours, and Spring Break when the parks didn't close until really late. This would really help us to plan how many days we need!

Is upgrading to a pool view worth it for an additional $15 a night or should I stick with a standard view? Also Im going in August 7 - 16, 2007 and just wondering but what are my chances are getting a free upgrade to savannah? I read posts where its pretty easy to get one in September but what about August? I just checked with Disneyworld.com and all the standard / pool rooms are booked for the whole month of August for this yr but not savannah yet. And I have been checking almost daily just to see how quickly it fills up. Since the standard / pool views are just now finally booked up, does this mean not to many people stay at the AKL?

We've been upgraded before.. but there was more availability then.
We tried to re-book our room only rates as a package (without having them being taken over by the TA).. we were unable to do it. My TA tried for days in a row.. we couldn't get a savanah room. Now there are cancellations so maybe eventually we would have gotten lucky, but we just did a 'take-over' of our ressies (where she just uses our original reservations and takes them over. We had to sign papers and have them faxed to Disney). That was only a week ago. If there is availability now for the savanahs, I doubt that it's many. I would definately NOT count on upgrade availability.. it's really hit and miss as it is.
AKL is one of the 2 cheapest of the Deluxe resorts. With no ap rates for many of the other resorts (including AKL & WL), people who want to stay at a deluxe will most likely be choosing AKL or WL since it's a lot cheaper.
IMO I probably wouldn't pay extra for the pool view.. but I certainly would for the savanah view. Yes, pool view is pretty, but it's not a perk to me. But to sit out on the balcony and sip coffee watching the animals in the morning.. that's worth it.
On the other hand.. there are many very nice viewing areas to see the animals around the hotel.. I just wouldn't sit there in my pjs :)
Also.. AKL is a very popular resort.. wait till you get there, you'll know why:)

Actually, I have to say that I partially agree with this, calgarygary. I've often thought it might be nice to have the active resort boards almost as their own subforums under Disney Resorts...then you could have subects under threads like choosing room views, kid's activities, photos, and yes even ZEBRA DOMES-so that those of us who probably need a Zebra Dome 12 step program could get the help we need.. :rotfl2:
On the other hand, I've already read all the pages popcorn:: so I only need to read the new stuff and I enjoy the sense of community here and I'm not sure how changing the format would effect that...
Everyone is usually really good about answering questions...
But don't every put your zebra dome down and turn your back :tiptoe: and when they are put out you better get there quick or there won't be any left party: ... :confused3

Hey Lisa............ exactly!!! :thumbsup2
Look....... we are almost at the 2 month point!!!! Whoo Hoo!!!! :woohoo:

Hi there. I just wanted to do a quick post. I read this thread before our trip. We stayed on the fifth floor arusha savannah for three nights. It was awesome. I don't know when we will stay there again, but our view was great.

Thanks to everyone who's contributed info to this thread. I'm relieved to know I can just ask a question instead of looking and looking for the answer.
(I just wish I knew that a week ago :) )
Seriously, I think this thread has helped us tremendously in planning our next trip. We had never been to AKL before, went to dinner at Boma's, and were enchanted by the place.
If anyone has any photos / reviews of the kids resort activities I would love it if you could post them. We're going in March 2007 and my daughter has lots of questions about the resort.
Thanks again!
:cheer2:
I do not have any photo's of the beads ~ we didn't really do any bead activities on our last trip. My DS did do the primal parade, he loved it. The kids meet at the Zawadi Marketplace at 7:50 pm, choose an instrument, then play it while they march around the lobby, when it's over, they are given a certificate of participation, it's really cute.
I assume you've seen the post with all of the activities listed and times, if not here it is again for you. I'm hoping we can do more activites this time.
REPOSTING for all those who are interested. HOWEVER --- PLEASE check the activities board near the front desk for correct times!!!!!

Mom update. Just wanted to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers and ask if you could please continue them for a little while longer as she just came through her second major surgery in 15 days as she developed an abcess in her pelvis and wound up with a perforated colon. Hopefully she is now on her way to recovery.
Thanks for the update. :grouphug: hope she's feeling better!!

I would tell anyone interested in upgrading thier room to first decide what they can/cannot live with. If you MUST have savannah view, book it, or if you want a pool view, but can live without it, don't book it and hope for an upgrade, with that in mind however, don't be upset if you don't get upgraded. I think if you really MUST have a certain view book it to ensure you get it!! Yes, they do complimentary upgrade and it is wonderful, it happened to us. However, I do believe this is due to the time of year we went, it was value season, there was no free dining promo, and I doubt the resort was full. Do a lot of people stay at AKL.............. YES!!!! The AKL has 1293 rooms, so on occassion there is room for giving upgrades, however, I'd never "assume" I'm going to get one. I think the "trick" per se, is the request you have, I'd advise you to have any noted on your reservation. It has been said that the "not so desireable" standard rooms are the smoking rooms, which are supposedly located on the giraffe and ostrich trails-- ( I personally do not know this to be the case) but, only what I''ve heard. The odds of getting one of those rooms is probably only if you smoke. I also would say that if you get to the resort, and just cannot live with the view you get, go back and let a CM at the check-in know, and ask to be moved, or upgraded. I'd also advise upon check - in, regardless of what you booked, to ask if they have any comp. upgrades, if not then be prepared to pay for one if you must have one. There are tons of area's to see the animals. As for all the standard / pool rooms being booked in aug. that is probably due to the free dining promo going on, and I'd guess that they aren't all really booked, just the one's for the promo as they only allot so many rooms for that (at least that is what I've also read). If I read your post right, your trip is over a year away, that gives you plenty of time to plan and decide what you MUST have, but either way you will love the resort and I'm sure you'll not have any problems with your view!!! Good Luck and if you have any other questions ask away!!! Hope to see you around here a lot, soaking up all the AKL info you can!!!

We are booked with 4 rooms Sav view. I haven't yet made requests b/c wanted to read through thread. What is your advice about this-I'd like a great view :rotfl2: prbably zebras and/or giraffes for the 2 little boys, plus convenientky near elevator/pool for the DGP's. Would love to request Bunk beds too on one of the connecting rooms.
SO-I was thinking to book a standard for one night just to have the day before everyone arrives for pool, flamingos etc.. or Sav view if I didn't have to move and could get the others who are checking in the next day connected, if you follow?
Advice welcomed :sunny:
...we were in room 5421, which had a great view of Arusha Rock (complete with zebras AND giraffes!), was near the elevators, AND had bunk beds. Since it was on the 5th floor, my guess is that this room was a concierge room - I would call AKL and ask if you could have this room, but one floor down (Rm #4421)....

I am booking my trip through AAA, so if I want a non-smoking room should I just have them let disney know when they go to book it or should I call the hotel myself and tell them. I also wanna have them put a note on our ressie that we are celebrating our 3rd anniversary while down there. Maybe that will increase our chances of getting a upgrade of some sort. After all we are going down for the year of a million dreams, so maybe they will take extra care to ppl who are celebrating a special occasion there like a free upgrade ;)

I've never booked through AAA, so I don't know if you can call CRO to add request. If I were you'd I'd call AAA and tell them your request and that you want it noted on your reservation. My neighbor and I are taking our families to AKL for the first time in August. He has a hot button issue with kids in the pool hot tubs (he thinks they should not be allowed). I told him there is no restrictions on that to my knowledge. He was complaing that last year (at PO) kids were jumping over adults unsupervised into the hot tubs etc...
My question , is there a different level of oversight by the life guardss or CM's at AKL (as it is a "deluxe resort"), and have you experienced this at AKL when you are there?
Thanks..

...there are two hot tubs at AKL - one is located in the area of the children's 'jungle-play-area', located "sorta" behind the pool. The other one is in a more 'romantic' spot, beyond the flamingo pond, as you are walking to a public viewing area (it's surrounded by flora and is set back a bit). Because of their locations, they are not really manned by the lifeguards, as, say the one at WL. Also because of their locations, I would tend to think that parents wold not allow their children near those areas, since they aren't clearly visible for parental overseeing.

Angel, since we're going in mid December, I'm curious about this too. I know I've seen pictures of a huge tree in the the lobby of AKL with an African theme of course and a kind of gingerbread village that looked really cool-the photos might even be back in this thread somewhere-lol :rotfl:
Although it isn't the lodge, the Animal Kingdom itself has a Christmas themed parade and the characters at Donald's breakfast are all dressed in holiday attire... I don't know if I've missed anything at the Lodge or Animal Kingdom. All of WDW has all kinds of special decorations and shows...but as for AKL, I don't know and am also curious...Anyone?

Angel 16,
We were at the AKL the week before Christmas. Each night there was some sort of entertainment in the lobby. We saw bell ringers and singers. Two days before Christmas they served cookies and punch in the lobby. There was a large chair for Santa near the Christmas tree, but we never did see him. I'm assuming he was on some type of schedule. We should have checked the activities board when we arrived.

Like kimmar said there are two hot tubs at AKL. Last time I did notice quite a few kids in the one by the main pool slide. The other one is a little more hidden and I have not seen kids in that one. It also seems to be the emptier of the two.

My husband and I agree with your neighbor. I hate it when kids are in the hot tubs. I wish WDW would designate at least one at each hotel "adults only". At Wilderness Lodge, the kids and the mom in the hot tub were singing nursery rhymes and talking in baby voices. It was unbearable! For some reason, I can't picture the hot tubs at AKL. Are they right next to each other-like at Wilderness Lodge?

I'm referring to the discussion several pages back (no flames please) about non-relevant posts and such. What I've noticed, and what I've experienced, is that sometime questions do not get answered. In fact, someone posted a few pages back and no one answered. I've posted about best views to request, and my post was ignored. Yet, I notice all these posts about Zebra Domes, etc. Don't get me wrong, I love this thread, and would love to see more pictures. I just wish I could ask a question and actually get it answered!

I'm sorry your question didn't get answered. Maybe no one knew the answer at the time? I know I have posted on threads and not gotten an answer or a complete answer. Usually I just end up posting a new thread about the topic or re-asking the question in the same thread. I don't think anyone would mind if you asked the question again.
I have a question about "Arusha Rock" view? Can that be bad? Like would I be looking out at a rock? I had Uzima before, which I loved. I would like Arusha Savanahh but don't really want to look out over a rock!
It looks like you posted it back in April if I'm looking at the right post. I have never stayed in one of the Arusha savannah rooms so I do not know how the views would be there. I would guess if you were in one of the 2nd floor rooms you might have some trouble looking over the rock depending on your room location.

...no, they are not. There is a walkway that goes around the pool. As you pass the health and fitness center (which would be on your right, with the pool on your left), you approach the first hot tub. It is, indeed, located "behind" the AKL pool slide, near the children's play area. As you keep walking around the pool, and you are now at the 'far side of the pool', you continue straight to walk towards the public viewing area (which is beyond the Zebra Trail section of the building). On your way there, off tp the right, is the other hot tub. It is more secluded and 'out-of-the-way'. In fact, I don't think that many folks realize that it is there....which is a good thing, if you want more 'privacy' for your hot tub experience! ;)

On behalf of the several few that earnestly try to respond to those of you who have a legitimate question regarding the AKL, I apologize for the lack of an answer to your particular query. I stayed in romm #5421, which, indeed, included a view of Arusha Rock, but NO, you are not just looking at a rock, but an expansive area of the savannah. Here is a pic I took:

While, yes, you can see Arusha Rock, this is but a sampling of the wonderful view you experience. Every morning we would see three giraffes, a few zebras, and other animals, as they grazed on the savannah...(hope this helps.... )

just wanted to say good day to all and again tx for all the valuable insight and expertise that everybody brings to this thread it has proved invaluable in helping me plan our familys vacation, no matter how many guide books i have read (read pretty much all of them) i still have learned a great deal about the akl and all that it has to offer from the great folks here, again tx

WHEW!!! I finally got thru all 190 pages of posts....I laughed, I cried...well, no, actually I didn't, but somewhere around page 50 I decided to switch our ressies from ASMo to AKL, thanks to the Wild Bunch. :thumbsup2
I must say this thread has been a great distraction for me. In November, my FIL fell off a ladder and broke his neck at work. He then developed pnemonia after the surgery, which followed with a massive heart attack. Fast forward 7 months and he was still on a feeding tube and living in a rehab home along with my MIL, who fell 6 weeks ago and shattered BOTH her femurs after she fell at home (she was there alone when it happened and layed for several hours before she could drag herself to the phone to call 911).
Last week Thursday morning my FIL fell and hit his head. By evening they sent him to the ER, not because of the fall, but because he had almost no blood pressure (duh, no wonder he fell!). By Friday we had to put him on life support, and later had to make the decision to remove him from it on Saturday after his feet "died" and kidney failure set in, along with the severe pnemonia, mersa, septic shock and completely blocked artery. He couldn't breathe without the respirator and his blood pressure bottomed out every time they changed the IV which was keeping his heart beating (but it was also shutting down the rest of him). The next night, Father's Day, he passed away.
I'm the inlaw's power of attorney, and actually they are my EX in-laws, as I divorced their son 6 years ago when I caught him cheating on me (and later found out he was stealing and had a drug & alcohol problem). They still consider me family, and don't trust him, which is why they asked me to be POA. Their daugter lives over 2000 miles away so I'm the only real family they have in the area.
So it's been a LONG two weeks for me. Thanks to your posts I can "escape" the reality of sickness & death for a few minutes each day and plan for my now very well deserved vacation in September with my DD.
And Bob, YOU ARE THE MAN!!! You give me hope that there are still NICE GUYS out there!

And so our story begins....
Some time ago someone had evinced an interest in seeing when I let Susan know where we were going for our 10th anniversary. Here's a couple shots I took last night when I "sprung" it on her. I think I've found a place to host a website when I get back so I can put up the complete tale and all photos and will come here to post a link for everyone.
Here's the photos (I hope):

We leave Sunday morning. Last minute details have been "tweaked" yet again by the famous Don & Co. and everything seems to be in place. I will cross my fingers now and hope for no hurricanes...
Bob
Wow Bob, Susan certainly does look surprised and excited. :thumbsup2 You are a GREAT husband, she is going to have the trip of a lifetime. Thank you for sharing her reaction. I feel like I am enjoying your trip right along with you.

Oh My Gosh! I love the Animal Kingdom, exept I had an issue...
After coming home from a busy day at Disney, we came back to the hotel, as soon a we flicked on the lights, a big nasty cockroach moved on the wall. We were asstoniched, but we delt with it. People say their common in Florida, but, we brought it to the front desk and the guy said "This is the Animal Kingdom!"
How rude, yeah it is, but it's not the bug kingdom
We wrote Disney a letter and they mailed us 50 Disney Dollars, I think they fired the man, we included a name and description.
That we very nice of Disney World. Don't you think. Not nice of the man!

Thank you everyone for your well-wishes. I probably should have posted the picture of the fully opened suitcase as there is lots more "stuff" in the other side (Cool-wraps, ponchos, "MouseKeeping" tip envelopes, walkie-talkies in case we get seperated, etc.).
I'm really interested in those mini-fans as well. Found a reference to those on another thread here and tracked them down online. The resevoir is a bit small, but I'm sure there are plenty of places to fill them up.
Actually, what Susan was most surprised about was the fact that she thought she might be able to make the ears fit! As you can probably tell, she'll need some bobby pins as she has that really thick, full red hair. But, since she has to wear them to get on the plane, I'm sure she'll work it out!
Remember, she has no idea where she's going to be staying or what she'll be doing (the limo driver has been primed not to give anything away and Don & Co. are not putting an itinerary in our welcome package). As you may remember, we lived in FL for 10 years and had our fill of "day trips" prior to the Animal Kingdom opening and that is the one place she hasn't been to see. We never stayed overnight, either, so hopefully the immersive experience will be something to put this completely over the top for her.
I'll get something posted for all you nice folks as soon as possible after we get back. Keep your fingers crossed for no hurricanes!

i<disney70: I'm sorry that you had an unpleasant experience, but perhaps the CM was just trying to make light of an unfortunate incident. My experience with the CM's at the AKL was positive in that all genuinely tried to please us. None were rude. As a QA analyst I would have coached him so that if here was a complaint that was embarrassing to the resort, he could have responded in a more appropriate manner. Termination is a harsh reaction to a verbal misstep.

Thank you all for your warm wishes. Now I know why I've already felt like part of the group even though I was mostly reading your posts and not joining in.
This will be our first stay onsite, and first time "dining" at Disney (other than the character breakfast we went to at CP several years ago). My DD and I last went to Disney when she was 3 (she's now 8) so this will be quite exciting for both of us, as she only remembers little bits and pieces of our last trip (thanks to all the photos). She keeps teasing me that I'm more excited than she is because each day I come home with more info, tips, etc. I found on this site! She thinks we're staying at the All Star Movies and has no idea that I secretly upgraded to AKL. Hopefully I can continue to keep the secret until we arrive! Zebras are her absolute favorite animal so I know she will be thrilled with the resort. Unfortunately I cannot afford a savannah room, but thanks to this thread I realize we can still see lots of great animals around the resort. I'm crossing my fingers for an upgrade (we are in a standard, as there were no pool view rooms available when I booked it). If not, we'll still be happy just to be at the AKL!
I'm counting the days until I can eat my first Zebra Dome and enjoy my first beverage at Victoria Falls. ;)

I wanted to share some news that we just found out we are getting a puppy. We are heading to Wisconsin next week to pick him up. He is 10 weeks old. Here is a pic of him:

....First of all, buenvenidos, boricua! :teeth: I think a pool view would do very nicely. Since you are on a tight budget, spend your $$ splurging on other things - like at the Zawadi Marketplace . If you DO choose the pool view, who knows :confused3 , you MAY be upgraded! You are going to LOVE AKL.....
Gracias! kimmara067! I'll do that....and pray for a "miracle" update to savanah view!!!! Thanks

Lisa, The puppy is adorable!
Well we are looking forward to our upcoming stay at AKL, we've actually decided to book a week in February instead of just a couple of days and we're booking a savannah view instead of standard. :yay: We are very excited!!
In the mean time we decided to cancell our trip in September at CBR and go to the beach instead. Let's just hope there are NO hurricanes. After all the resort drama and all it just wore us out and it just took the fun out of it. The kids actually asked to go to the beach and that was DH's original plan.
But DH and I are looking very forward to our first trip to AKL. Dumb question: is it warm enough to swim in early February?

I'm around the 2 month time too! Not too much longer now. I loved those pics! Did you just find them randomly on the internet or do you know the folks in them?
And that puppy looks so adorable! Almost makes me want a puppy, but then our horribly spoiled cat :cat: would have a big problem with that! :sad2:

I have decided, based on responses, and based on pictures, AND my prior experience, not to request a certain savannah. I would really rather have a "low" floor for a closer view, and there is something I like about each savannah. So, I've decided to leave that to chance, and to focus on getting a "low" floor.

shyjade, sorry about the loss of your fil, hope your WDW trip planning gives you some rest! I found these boards after my sister died suddenly 6 years ago and it has helped me through my nephew's illness, father's heart surgery and now Mom's.

I have a question: what are the pool hours at AKL? I've read "open 24 hours" and also "10am to 10pm". Anyone know which is correct?
Okay, make that 2 questions...anyone ever do the Cultural Safari? I've seen it mentioned several times but never found any details on what exactly it is...

Hi Everyone!!! Just checking in to say "Jambo"!!! ...
Exactly!!!! That's why those of us who post here keep coming back!! It's so nice to talk about anything from the lodge to zebra domes to our lives. We can be serious or silly and I for one love that!!! This is a terrific support group, it feels like a "best girlfriend" that you can talk too. It also certainly doesn't hurt that we all have the same affinity for our FAVORITE place!!! It's wonderful and I'd hate for this thread to change in any way!!!!!!!!!!!! :grouphug:
cheer2: I went to the Disney Store yesterday and got DS a Captain Jack costume...... he just had to have it, and it's too cute!!! Now when we get to DTD and he "builds" his pirate hat, he'll be all set, so if you see a little swashbuckler around the lodge don't be afraid......... he's a good pirate!!! pirate: Yo Ho
** They had tons of things on sale!!! Just an FYI for you guys!!
I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the week and has a wonderful weekend!!!
Wendy-here, here! :goodvibes :grouphug: I didn't see a Captain Jack Sparrow Costume at our store... pirate: hum...I'm going to have to go back there...sometimes I feel that they put things out at different times when they're having these sales... (Does any one know if the Disney Store online is the same at the stores...?)
Kimmar-great photos and that looks like the most recent activity list??? (can't wait-but I have to... :confused3 and while we're at it...isn't today Friday? Doesn't that mean it will soon be time to put out those Zebra Domes?...Since I missed out last week...I plan to hang close by today... :smooth:

From Allears;
What types of recreation are available?
AKL has a themed pool, a kids' wading pool, two outdoor spas ("hot tubs") and a fitness center. There is also a kid's playground.
The Uzima Springs pool is the largest on Disney property, over 11,000 square feet. It is also a "Zero-Depth Entry" pool, meaning there is an entrance without steps. I saw lots and lots of kids (young ones, too) enjoying the 67-foot long slide and kiddy wade pool area. There is no quiet pool at AKL.
The Uzima pool is open 24 hours, but the lifeguards go off duty at 10:00 PM and the slide also closes. The two spas close at midnight.
Hope this helps!!

Wendy, That would be great if we ended up there at the same time. LOL DH and I are really excited. I don't know what the deal was this time but it just didn't come together as our Disney plans normally do. But it worked out because we are able to splurge a little more this way. I really hope the weather will be warm enough for us to take advantage of that pool. Truth is I know once I get DH there, I've got the odds working in my favor. Keep us informed on your September trip :thumbsup2
Oh, to answer your question about the beach. We are going to Panama City Beach, we've booked a beautiful 2 bedroom deluxe condo at Longbeach Resort. We rented directly from the owner and for the lovely price of $850 for a week. She has really gone all out on this condo from the 300+ thread count Egyptian cotton sheats to the granite counter tops. I know it's not Disney but it'll be a little more relaxing as we won't be doing anything but laying out and a few recreations but that's what we need for now. But come February, Girl, we will be ready for the World, WDW that is :thumbsup2

Nants ingonyama bagithi baba, (There comes a lion)
Sithi uhhmm ingonyama, (Oh yes it's a lion)
So starts the song, "Circle of Life" from the 1994 feature movie The Lion King, as penned by Sir Elton John and Mr. Tim Rice.
If there is a more fitting song title for a Disney movie, I would be hard pressed to think of it. For many of us, the circle of life takes us back to Disneyland Resort in California or Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, on more than one occasion. This time it would be my pleasure to experience first hand one of the newest resort creations in Orlando, Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge.
Opened in the spring of 2001, Animal Kingdom Lodge is one of ten deluxe resorts found at Walt Disney World. The African adventure starts from the moment you arrive. Turning into the driveway, tall, lush foliage masks the awaiting journey, as if challenging you to find the resort from the main entrance.
It's apparent upon reaching the entry gate to Animal Kingdom Lodge, that this is not your average family resort. A guard stops all vehicles attempting to enter, and only those whose names appear on the registry are allowed access. Expectations run high as we await our turn in line. Something unique is about to happen.
Walking under the large canopy covering four-lanes of incoming traffic, the sounds of Africa come alive with the vibrant staccato of birds and the strange conversations of their unknown Serengeti neighbors. Attendants dressed in safari attire quickly usher guests into the awaiting sanctuary and out of the hustle and bustle of cars and tour buses.
Once inside the Animal Kingdom Lodge, I am immediately struck by the immensity of the main lobby and it's seemingly limitless thatched roof. A gigantic mud fireplace and meandering stream dominates the interior landscape. Large, animated shields hang from the rafters.
Traffic flows through the center of the dark hardwood floor lobby, where comfy sofas and chairs rest on area rugs off to the side, creating numerous conversation settings throughout the main floor. African art is interspersed throughout the hotel, providing a kaleidoscope of color and imagery. Rising at the back of the lobby from floor to ceiling, a massive picture window looks out on the inner circle of the African landscape. A large interlocking brick patio and staircase entices guests to spend time in the great outdoors and breathe in the sights and sounds of the wild. At the bottom of the stairs, the elevated kopje, or rock outcropping, ascends from the Serengeti floor. This walk around area puts guests within 15 feet of the animals for an amazing view of the reserve.
Winding our way from the main lobby, down the seemingly endless hallway, we arrive at our rooms with bags in tow, exhausted from the anticipation of the daily events that await us in the days ahead.
"Where are the African pack elephants when you need them?" I think to myself. "There is enough luggage here to outfit a small army of adventure seeking tourists!" Of course, my comments fall on deaf ears, as our entourage of four teenage girls has no understanding of what it means to pack light.
Spacious and colorful, our rooms face one section of the Disney wildlife reserve. Balconies extend the full length of the room, overlooking the grasslands where giraffes, zebras, Thomson's gazelles and ostrich roam freely. At first glance, the wild grasslands seem to extend right up to the resort wall. But looking more closely, I notice security fencing maintains an appropriate distance between resort guests and the animal inhabitants.
Queen size beds fill the room, while an adjacent makeup counter and mirror separate the bathroom from the sleeping quarters. A large African motif entertainment unit, along with two large wooden chairs surrounding a rustic table, completes the décor.
The floor is carpeted in an earth toned, patterned material; the beds decorated in African colors of red, orange and black. Inside the bathroom, large ceramic tiles and subtle lighting give substance to the feeling of staying at a lodge.
The Animal Kingdom Lodge offers 1,293 guestrooms, of which 980 are first class, 294 deluxe, plus 17 one- and two-bedroom suites. It also makes available one Presidential suite and one Vice Presidential suite.
There are a total of four restaurants to choose from.
Jiko-The Cooking Place, is open only for dinner. Reservations are required, but be prepared to still come early. Meals are served buffet style, with a wide range of specialty foods, fruits and vegetables, along with more traditional menu items always being available.
Boma-Flavors of Africa, offers a self-service, family-style restaurant in a marketplace setting.
With so much to do at the resort and surrounding Walt Disney World, more often than not, we chose to eat at The Mara express restaurant. The menu selection was excellent and reasonably priced. Served in a cafeteria setting, it is close to the outdoor pool and offers easy access to the onsite daycare facilities for those parents with small children.
For a light snack, or to just relax with a gourmet coffee or tea, the fourth dining choice is Victoria Falls. It also offers an excellent selection of South African wines, international beers and cocktails in a mezzanine lounge.
Located at the center of the resort is Uzima, the large, outdoor pool and whirlpool. It also happens to have a 67 ft. waterslide and wading pool. Surrounded by lush vegetation and chaise lounges, it calls out for weary Walt Disney World guests to come and get refreshed from a long day spent at one of the many resort parks on the surrounding property.
A trip to a Disney resort wouldn't be complete without a trip to a Disney Park. With so much to choose from, we spent three days bouncing between the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney-MGM Studios and of course Disney's Animal Kingdom Park. We also had the opportunity to explore Blizzard Beach, one of two water parks located on the Walt Disney World property.
Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge offers a true taste of the majesty that is Africa. It is a rare treat to have the opportunity of sitting on a balcony, enjoying the sun on my face as the sights and sounds of wildlife caress my mind. For a completely unique experience, unlike anything else at Walt Disney World Orlando, you owe it to yourself and your family to take the adventure.

Thinking about upgrading, but I am not sure the extra cost is worth it. From what i have read most rooms are great no matter where they are located. Thanks for all the helpful information.

Now, back to my 'DH saga'.....I am sitting here at my 'puter, when he walks in, saying, " You're on the 'DIS' AGAIN???". I reiterate by telling him that I am TRYING to get a good price on R/T airfare....again, he starts with the "I dunno know if I wanna go" schpiel, and, "Whatever...". I think that, unless I get a REALLY fantastic deal on airfare, I am resigned on the fact that we will DRIVE.....

Hi Everyone!!!!
Happy 4th!!!!
I hope everyone had a great weekend!!!
I'm a little sad to hear so many "hubbies" (dm220 excluded) ;) don't like going to the world!!!! My DH LOVES it as much as I do, in fact this Sept. trip was solely his idea!!! We were just there in Jan./Feb. and we are starting to plan for next Feb. :thumbsup2 AND!!!! :cool1: he just told me last night to go ahead and extend the trip for 2 more nights!!!!! YEP, I'm gonna get 2 full weeks out of him yet!!!!!!!!!!!! :rolleyes1
So, would you guys add onto the front or back of the trip??? AND I'm thinking about the Poly for 2 nights???? I know, I know, it's blasphemy, but, I've always wanted to stay there, so what do you think??? I"m seriously leaning towards the back end, I'm afraid that with Labor Day the weekend will be really crowded. ( We arrive on Sunday the 3rd as it is now). I think days on the end would be better. :confused3
I also just made him a resv. for the Magnolia course, a birthday gift for him ~ he's VERY happy about that!!!! which could explain the "extension" onto the trip :goodvibes Well, I hope everyone enjoyed the fireworks and has a great week!!

I'm happy to hear the good news! Last summer my Mom was very ill, and her move into a regular room was a huge accomplishment. She had a bout with the same thing last week, adn is very weak but we caught it in time, so she was able to avoid going to the hospital this time. Thank goodness that my sis is a resp therapist, and can manage to stay on top of her illness. The Dr will work with her because she is amazing!

Thank you. She has emphysema, and it is progressive. Last year she was very ill, but bounced back. This past week has been horrible for people with breathing issues, and she is no exception, but so far we have been able to keep her out of the hospital. Today we go to the Dr, and will see what he says. A little prayer would be welcome.

The buses only go to the parks, water parks, & dtd. To get to another resort you need to get on a bus to any park & then take a bus to a resort. You can also ride the monorail from MK to get to the Contemporary, Poly, & GF.

If you want to know exactly what is in the ZDs, go to the recipe link on allearsnet.com and they have it there (but too complicated for me!).
I did make the banana bread pudding with vanilla sauce. I used costco croissants and it was not only easy, but it was excellent!

Zebra Trail is our fav for AKL as it is close to the Arusha Savannah and to the pool area where Mara's is as well. We like the 2-3 floors as you don't get as blocked by trees or too low to survey the animals. Been there about 5-6 times now. Enjoy... it is our favorite resort after 23 visits.

Greetings all,
First and foremost, the website with all the pics and the day-to-day, blow-by-blow won't be ready for awhile. Since everyone here was so kind and helpful, however, I felt obligated to at least post something as soon as I could.
Synopsis: There were magical moments and not-so-magical moments, but not one ounce of regret. Some cast members are great, others remind you of the surly fast-food workers in the "real" world. And last but not least, Susan and I both agreed that (not just because of the animal viewing) the Animal Kingdom Lodge is THE place to stay on property at WDW.
Probably if it weren't for the impending arrival of the Moroccan Ambassador halfway through our stay, we would have gotten the room that Don had planned for us and things would have been virtually perfect at the lodge (I can overlook bad attitude as I am forced to do daily). Well, aside from the fact that they misplaced the flowers that were to be in the room when we arrived... but, more on the details when I put up the website.
Regardless, I now understand both the complaints and the compliments I had read about AKL in the months during my planning. Interestingly enough, both are somewhat justified, though after experiencing it firsthand, I must say that I lean toward putting more emphasis on the compliments.
I have two specific points of what I believe to be bad news, however. I was told by a somewhat reliable source as we were leaving that the AKL is going to be converted to a DVC resort. It is due to be "gutted" (their term, not mine) in the not-to-distant future and the 5th floor will be entirely converted to "suites". They are building another building nearby (I suppose for additional timeshare space), though the gesture my source used when saying this was rather vague and non-specific as to location. Secondly.... I am almost ashamed to admit it.... I didn't care much for the zebra domes. They're not bad, but I'm not a "mousse" kind of guy, sorry ladies. Susan liked them, though.
All in all, though, it was a truly wonderful trip. As I said, it had it's magical moments as well as the not-so-magical, but in general the cast members were great and I can't say enough good about Don, Jaunita and Sue in the IPO. Don wasn't supposed to be there during our stay as he had had a personal emergency but at the last minute canceled leaving (possibly because of the ambassador's impending arrival) and had the immense pleasure of meeting him in person. He had to sneak the ring over to V & A's, remember. I'll be sure to have a "Credits" page on the website since there were so many folks that worked behind (and in front of) the scenes to make this a wonderful trip for Susan and I will be forever grateful.
I'm afraid this is all I have time for at the moment as I need to start downloading the 250-some pictures from my camera so I can get started.
Thank you all again for your information and advice. Several things came in quit handy as you will see once the whole story is told...

Hi Bob! Look forward to reading your report & seeing some pictures.
Greetings all,
First and foremost, the website with all the pics and the day-to-day, blow-by-blow won't be ready for awhile. Since everyone here was so kind and helpful, however, I felt obligated to at least post something as soon as I could.

.....I guess Zebra Domes are the 'margueritas' of desserts, a 'chick-kinda' thing... :teeth: ! (that's perfectly ok - no need to apologize - moe for US to enjoy!)

Bob-so glad you had a great trip and I look forward to seeing your photos and hearing about your day to day experiences... :) :) :)
Secondly, ok please excuse me everyone if I start to get hysterical :bitelip: but when is the AKL going to be "gutted"-Bob did you get any dates..........
Normally I think I'd be calmer about this but DH has been teasing me this weekend about staying at the Wilderness Lodge instead of AKL...he loves the little boat to the MK, it is closer, etc. etc.... :guilty:
Now to put this in perspective... before laying my eyes on the AKL-Wilderness Lodge was my favorite Disney Resort-I still love it-I just fell hard for AKL :cloud9: when we went there to have dinner with them there and I told myself 3 years ago we'd stay there the next time we went back to WDW...I had to do a little convincing DH and DD both WL groupies...and I did by selling them on all the cool things that AKL offered...the restaurants and the activities...
but now I'm hearing the world "gutting" and I can't say I'm feeling too calm right about now (granted it could be the 3 cups of coffee I've had but still...)someone please tell me something so I don't start crying
SOS
:sad2:

Looking for anyone who has had a view on the Sunset Savanna. We have stayed several years in a row but always by Arusha Rock, both trails. This year everyone feels they would like to try and stay closer to the Concierge lounge- so I'm trying to decide whether or not to request 6th floor.
