Well I talked to my mom and told her about the food court situation at Poly, don't get me wrong Poly is my dream resort but for now I feel AKL would better suit us. But I took it upon myself to call CRO and book AKL again, I don't think I'm going to tell DD's or DH and let it be a surprise. DH knows I'm toying w/ the idea and he'll suspect that's what I'm doing anyway. And dd's will be excited regardless of where we stay. I told my mom what I've done but as it turns out their trip is now up in the air because of travel dates and my dad is over several jobs right now and they have a new big $ project that they will need to bid on the end of August. I do hope they can come but in the mean time

I'M BACK at AKL :yay:

YEAH!!! The 3 of us are BAAAAACK......................... :thumbsup2

I have been trying to post all day and haven't been able to. The screen would just go blank. Has anyone else had this problem? :confused3

I told DH and the DDs that I have decided on a resort and it is going to be a surprise to them. I guess they are tired of hearing me talk about all of the resorts that they agreed to let it be a surprise and they've not asked any questions. Normally, I'm not that good at keeping secrets but I've only got a couple more months and I'm going to try really hard.

Catsrule - Have an terrific time! Tell all the babies "HI" for me. :teeth:

LAWalz23 - You won't be disappointed in concierge. I'd e-mail them directly and let them handle all your ADR's. wdw.AKLodge.concierge@disney.com Nothing against DU, but you are paying for the services of IPO. I prefer to correspond directly with them even when I've used a TA in the past. They can purchase gifts for you to have waiting in your room upon arrival in case you want to surprise anyone. I've done this on all almost every trip. Embroidered Golden Mickey ears is one idea. I purchased these along with pin/lanyard sets and the 50th celebration pins last year. You can always request a card signed by a character, too. They typically don't charge for this unless a picture has to be purchased for the character to sign.

I'm sure folks can get character autographs even if they are not staying concierge. I don't think I've ever really found the answer to this or not. Wild Bunch - do you know if anyone can request an autograph?

Just a pic because they typically do a nice presentation:

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g283/VA_gal/AKL5.jpg

I asked about this a while ago, and am still a little unsure, we are leaving in three weeks, and NOT staying concierge, does anybody know if it's possible to order these and have them delivered to the hotel and waiting in the rooms on a non concierge floor? If so, do you have any idea which store has them?
Thanks again!

I am jumping in on this thread because we are going to the AKL in three months and I am so excited!

First, to LAWalz23, I am so glad your mom is on her way to recovery!

We are going to the AKL for my husband's birthday on 9/16 for three nights. We booked a concierge room w/free dining. We stayed concierge a few years ago (2x) and were hooked. It is the best concierge on WDW in my opinion. I love the check in process, the lounge and the rooms. The only down point is that the rooms overlooking the savannah are quite a hike from the lounge but it is worth it!

I am so excited about the dining plan, we have never used it and it is a great deal to get for free. We also have the sunset safari (not sure if this is the name) w/dinner at Jiko's booked but we are thinking of cancelling. Has anyone done this?

I can't wait!!!! :Pinkbounc :cool1:

I have 2 nights in deluxe savannah two weeks from now and now I am drooling for conceirge after reading allthe posts on this thread.
If I am staying for two nights- adults only- is the upgrade worth the money? We generally stay on the third floor and love being so close to the anilmals. Tak to me my expert DIS pals!

LaWalz33, my prayers are with your mom and family. Each day after heart surgery is a mountain to climb (my dad had his 15 years ago), but as the problems come up they will work around them to fix them. It is amazing what medicine can do and also the love of a family. :grouphug:

mickeyworld, I am not unbiased about the concierge. It is my favorite place! We have stayed concierge at GF, Poly, Yacht Club and AKL. AKL is the winner for me hands down! We have done both adults only and with our kids. My children beg to go back every time we talk about it. It is, in my opinion, one of the most romantic resorts around. My husband and I have relaxed in the lounge and enjoyed the buffet of hot and cold appetizers and the nice selectioin of wines. We also enjoy the bar at the hotel for coffee drinks. The concierge savannah view rooms are on the fifth floor so that might be a change for you (although I thought the view was great). If you have a good amount of time to enjoy the resort and are not doing commando type park visits it just might be worth it to upgrade. I won't book concierge unless we are taking a good amount of time at the resort. If you go try and book the concierge sunrise safari, it is awesome! :thumbsup2

Hi Stephwynn, I would call the dinning phone number and ask if you can make arrangements for the gold Mickey Mouse ears to be in your room when you arrive. You may have to talk to the resort itself in the guest services area or the counter concierge each resort has now. If you are not able to set it up that way, I would contact Feralpeg, she is a fellow DISer and does wonderful baskets. I am sure she would be able to purchase the ears and have your names put on them. She then delivers to your resort and the resort delivers to your room. Here is here site: http://www.peggyssweetsandmore.com/.

I have used Peg twice and have been very, very impressed. The presentation is beautiful. I did a basket for my DH last year and he was very pleased. Then at Christmas Peggy helped me surprise my husband at home.
When you pull up her site go to the bottom right corner, it is printed in pink "new wedsite" click that. It will take you to the site she is currently working on with pictures of all the items available. Peggy will also shop for any item you may want at is sold at DTD. Hi, little question!
Our flight arrives at around 9pm in Orlando, so I figure we'll check-in at around 11pm. Is there anything open at that hour? Because I know we'll probably be dying for food by then.
And I've heard some pretty bad things about ME with regards to luggage. If we get there before our luggage, will they wake us up at some ungodly hour to deliver it?

Our vacation started off so good. DH and I got pulled out of the long Southwest Airline line and got checked in. We have no clue why but we sure appreciated not having to stand in the long line for check in.

Next nice thing to happen was getting pulled out of the LONG Alamo rental car line. After DH was waiting in line for 30 minutes with about another 30 minutes to go, he got pulled from the line! YIPEE. Off to get our car.

Once we arrived at AKL at 11:30am we were able to check in and go to our room. We were upgraded from a standard view to a pool view. LOL it was on the first floor so most of the view was of foliage. Not a problem with us. Plus it was a corner room so we had the extra chest of drawers..LOL and with 3 of us in the room it sure came in handy.

Luvfigment did a great job showing us around. We all love AKL and found it so relaxing.

One of the best things we did was the culinary tour the first day we arrived. We were eating at Boma that night so we figured this would be a way to learn what to eat. Chef David did a super job explaining all the items on the buffet. He was great!! He arranged for a sampler to be sent to our table for our honeymoon couple. He even sent Kerri a cupcake for her birthday even though her birthday was not until Tuesday.

Luvfigments birthday card was sent to the room and she got her wake up call...LOL too bad she was in the shower.

Soups were outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!
Desserts were outstanding....including the zebra domes!!!!

I would definately stay at AKL again.

Luvfigment is going to post more and some pictures. In all our trip was fantastic.

Hey all!!! As Webbie stated we had a great time on our trip and the weather was great! Only 1 T-storm on Sunday night other than that is was high 80's to low 90's and the humidity was lower than normal.

Dinner at Boma was very yummy...loved the hummus and all those Zebra Domes! I strongly suggest doing the culinary tour before eating at Boma's it made it so easy to know what you were going to eat. So if you are a first timer and are reading this the tour was at 4 pm during the week and 3:45 on weekends you can check the activities boards. Got some pictures:

It's only a 15 min ride to the MK parking lot. However, then you need to take the tram from the parking lot to the TTC, followed by boat or monorail to MK.(total ~45min) It's MUCH faster to take the AKL bus to the MK. It drops you off right at the MK.(total ~15 min) We normally drive to the other parks, and DTD, however, when it comes to the MK we usually take the bus.

Now, I know this question has been asked numerous times before, but seeing as I just experienced a billion finals, please refresh my memory. Is it necessary to indicate a non-smoking room on room requests if it is somewhat important to my family? I know that people are not supposed to smoke on the balconies overlooking the savannah, so what rooms allow smoking?

I have a long request list already and am not sure if I should bump up the non-smoking room request on the top of the list.

Thanks to all who are so great posting on this thread!

Hi Raina  Wow a billion finals, you have my sympathy. To answer your question, if non-smoking is important to you then YES let them know you are requesting non-smoking. I learned the hard-way on one of our visits. I did not request non-smoking. We were placed in a nice room, however the people next to us smoked and their smoke came through the bathroom air vent. YUCK  Made my allergies very bad and there was nothing we could do about it.

I have been told by IPO that smoking is pool view rooms. If you have requested a savannah room you should not have a problem (at least with honest people who will not smoke in a non-smoking room) On another note, I have read here on the DIS that people have been told they can smoke in savannah rooms as long as it is not on the balcony because of the animals. (I am sending you a PM :) )

I'm glad that you both enjoyed your trip! Great suggestion to take the tour prior to eating at Boma. I took it after, and while I enjoyed it very much, it would have been nice to have a little "insider info" before hand.

I know the Culinary tour has been described before but I'm having trouble looking through the thread because of "server busy" message. Can you tell me all about the Culinary tour? What happens and how long is it? Also what is the cultural safari?

Nancyg56
06-12-2006, 06:09 PM
Gem_smiling: The culinary tour is a guided tour thru the cooking place in Jiko as well as a chef guided tour of the food selections in Boma. You meet in front of Jiko at 3:30 or 3:45, and a CM explains the restaurant, the food and how it is prepared, and offers a sample. There is plenty of opportunity for questions. Then to Boma. Two chefs took me thru the line and ex[plained tht cuisine, and how it is prepared. I had samples of the soups prepared for the day.

I can't help with the cultural safari. I'm sorry.

Angel: No, I'm afraid that I can't switch from the Poly. My girls would never forgive me, and my DD quakes at the thought of a split stay. Kady did tell me the other day that she loved the AKL and "never wanted to leave". Now that I have finally gotten my DH to have a DIsney bug, I know that we will get the chance to go back because a farmboy wants to be near animals, doesn't matter what kind as long as the are animals. Zebras aren't cows, but they qualify. ;) You know that I'm pulling for you for this trip too.

How much fun is that!!!!!!!!!!!! :goodvibes:goodvibes A wedding is so exciting, and there is something wondrous when a son marries. My youngest DS married 2 years ago, gifting us with our "daughter of my heart". I know that you will enjoy the coming weeks and months as you plan for the big day.

( I wish I was planning a wedding for my oldest. He broke up with a lovely young lady, and I was heartbroken. My poor son had tell me that it was not all about me.)

My mom and sister are so excited they can hardly stand themselves!!!! We haven't had a "wedding" since my sister got married (the 3rd time......... :rolleyes1 ) 6 years ago!!! It's going to be fun!!! My DS said he'd just like to do it here at the house, have it very low key out by the pool, like hawaiian shirts and shorts!!! LOL and have a crawfish boil / bbq party!!! Now you have made my day! One of my DS previous GF was just fresh! DH told me not to say anything about her if I could not find something nice. Well, it was the hardest thing I ever did ( I am a bit of a busybody, and this was my son) anyway, One day I burst into tears and said "Daniel, please marry someone who will love your mother." He broke up with her soon after that, and when he finally brought home Erica, I was thrilled. All I really wanted was that my sons wife love and respect him. A bonus was that his lovely wife not only loves him, she loves us too. I hear from her every day, and look forward to her call. Oh dear, now I'm going to cry again!

Wendy, Congratulations on your sons engagement. I am happy for you that you love your future daughter-in-law. That is so important! If you end up doing the wedding in your home with the crawfish and BBQ you may have some DIS guests. :)

Your thoughts on a honeymoon sound wonderful. What a wonderful way to start married life.

I am sorry, for some reason I thought your trip was late June or early July. I really didn't mean to throw you off.

LaWalz23 - How is your mom doing? Also important, how are you doing? I hope you are eating and getting some rest. :grouphug: Please update us on your mom when you have the time.

Nancyg - :flower3: I always enjoy reading your posts about your family and your warm loving thoughts.

Got to run. Sending pixie dust to all that I have missed.

Home last night from another wonderful AKL stay ! :thumbsup2
It was brief, but wonderful - this trip was all about the DNeph(8) and our 2nd annual SWW trip. Thurs/Fri nights at BCV on the end of our points - two days at SWW- also a trip through Epcot to ride M:S (twice) now that it doesn't spin and finish up DNeph's passport from the last visit.
Then it was on to AKL (concierge) for two nights to do the Sunrise Safari and Expedition Everest!! We checked in at about 1:00 on Sat afternoon and, having taken the bus over from MGM with no luggage, etc, wandered into the lobby (for the big "WOW" effect from DNeph - his 1st visit here, my 3rd) - there was quite a line at the luggage desk, so I saw a young man walking towards me with an empty luggage cart and asked him if I was in the right place to check in for concierge. He was wonderful and said he would take care of us- took my name and checked - room was ready - yes, it was on Arusha Savannah, Kudu trail (I had requested Zebra, but no big deal) - luggage was also already over from BCV, so he printed our room cards, loaded up our bags and off we went! Room was on 5th floor and not far from the Pelicans overlooking Arusha rock - perfect :thumbsup2 !
I had initially booked concierge for the sunrise safari because DNeph is an animal LOVER - even goes to our local zoo camp every summer - I knew this would be an experience he would always remember and it far exceeded our expectations! Concierge ended up being a huge blessing for me because I ended up needing an unexpected kidney surgery weeks before our trip and went in between surgeries - so this trip was a real physical challenge for me and I felt a little less worried knowing that there would be people there to help me if I ran into any serious problems.
Just realized this could be an endless post, so I'll tell some of the things we did and if anyone has questions or wants details, let me know! We hung out in the lounge on and off - DNeph actually passed up two opportunities to go to MK to stay at the Lodge and participate in the kid's programs (I was very happy about this as I needed the rest and I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE everything about the AKL ambiance!) Concierge did a wonderful job of delivering a few gifts for DNeph I had requested to our room while we were in the lounge. The Sunrise Safari was awesome (and Rick McCallum, producer of SW, was on our tour and breakfast - of course we respected his privacy and did not disturb him, but it was fun for us to share the morning with him as we are big SW fans). DNeph did all of the kid's activities and earned all of his beads, befriended several of the African CMs (who are, by the way, amazing with the children!!) and got their help with his hidden Mickey search and they also gave him an Archeological Artifacts sheet that took him through the lodge to identify some of the art work/artifacts displayed. We swam in the pool, spent a whole day at AK and rode EE 3 times. Yesterday it rained all day (trop storm moving in), so we again chose to stay in the lodge all day enjoying the lounge and the kid's programs, checking out all of the animal overlooks and just soaking up the wonderful 'feeling' of this lodge. I'm saving up my pennies as I heard rumors from more than one CM that AKL DVC could come true - I am so buying points there if it does ! Almost forgot - we did night vision both nights - very cool!! :thumbsup2

ahhhh.............. sounds like a nice girl!!! I'm happy for you. I was a little scared at first about getting a DIL, I have 3 sons, so I'm the only female...... OK OK, I'm NOT that protective of my domain........ or at least I hope I'm not.... LOL, but I was wondering what another female around would be like..... it's been really nice actually, she is a great girl and seems to really adore DS, which makes me happy. As long as she treats him good and loves him, I'm happy, it's a bonus that she seems to have blended in really well with the rest of us!!! She has already become a part of the family, and I'm really happy for him, for them both!!

Well I read the first 60 pages and realized I'll never get thru the entire thread today, so forgive me if this question has already been addressed somewhere between Page 61 and Here.

Has anyone used Simba's Clubhouse for their kids? I'll be traveling alone with me DD8 and was wondering if she'd enjoy a few hours away from Mom with other kids (maybe I could even sneak off for dinner at Jikos, since I know she'd gag at the menu if I tried taking her).

Any feedback on kids activities and Simbas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

In fall of 2004 I suprised my mom and sister with 4 nights at AKL. They thought we were staying at CBR the whole time, but on the plane I gave my mom three of those nice postcards from the AKL giftshop (I actually got them there in 2001 when AKL opened who knew they would come in handy) and my mom was breathless. I haven't started packing per say, but I have purchased stuff that is specifically for the trip. I need to get to the Target Dollar Spot as I have been reading on the boards there is some good stuff there right now. I picked up some shirts for the trip (for some reason I love having new clothes for vacation) at Old Navy on clearance. I have slowly been gathering some stuff together to give to my mom and sister as welcome gifts in addition to the basket. I decided to do a spa theme and got them all sorts of mini spa stuff from Beauticontrol and some other assorted items.

[stephwynn How is the planning going?

Hi Scouts...
slowly but surely, I'm getting there, I've been able to finally make some sense out of TGM site, thanks to your great advice. My family nearly choked when I told them that we would have to be up and AT the parks before rope drop! I am thinking that we may have to go in a couple of shifts, cause I'm not waiting and missing out, and waiting in lines that I don't have to!!!

I was all set to book a Character meal, but after reading the advice on the other site, I'm not so sure....Arggg...too many decisions, :confused3 and I don't want to get there and have everybody telling me I'm some sort of control freak....

I've half a mind to make a plan for DS15, her friend and I, and let the two 17 yr olds and hubby do as they please! ha!!! Like that would go over well...NOT.... :sad2:

anyway, counting down, I dug out my rain ponchos from our last trip, bought them at the first site of drops, and then the rain quit, I carried them back and forth each day, and they are still unused...if we could be so lucky this time...probably not! :lmao:

Okay, I am sure this isn't the best place to post this question, but...given all the time I spend pouring over this thread, I am beginning to feel like you are all friends!

I am planning to order a few things from one of the online grocers to be delivered and waiting for us, things such as bottled water, small snacks (cause I know my family will prefer Mickey Bars and Zebra domes to much healthy stuff!) I had a brainstorm in the middle of the night...I thought about ordering toiletries, you know shampoo etc, the stuff that takes up so darn much space and has a potential to leak in my suitcase on the way down (we are flying). Has anybody ever done this? How do you find the prices of these places? I will have to keep in mind that I will be paying exchange etc, but I am still thinking that it might be worth it...

Any comments?

Hi Wendy,

I've decided to surprise my DD8 with our stay at the AKL in September. That was our first choice, esp. the Savannah, but not in the budget as a single (divorced) mom. Now that the Standard rooms have opened up for the free dining package, I switched our resie yesterday from ASMo to AKL. WOO HOO!! It just about killed me to not tell her last night, as she's a HUGE animal lover, with ZEBRAS being her very favorite (she collects zebra stuff). I'm hoping to spring it on her where we're actually staying when we get there, or sooner if she hears it while checking in at the ME desk. Crossing my fingers for an upgrade but not expecting it so I won't be too disappointed.

Lisa, that was so sweet. My dds have been on me trying to find out and I've not told them anything afraid I might crack. Anyway I'm planning on telling them tonight that we'll be staying at Pop again and hopefully that will work. I'm just soooo excited and I know it will be a BETTER surprise for them if I continue to keep the "secret". So I'm holding strong.

How nice!!! I'll tell you, she will love it!!! My DS6 just enjoyed it so much. When is your trip in Sept?? Make sure you check out the activities board near the check in desk....... there are TONS of things for the kids to do, my DS really enjoyed the Zawadi Parade each night!! We are going to let him do the Adventure Camp too this time. I told DH that I want to spend a little more time at the lodge this time, since there are so many things to do, not to mention just a day hanging out by the pool would be fun for DS.......... he's so excited to get on the slide!! Also, don't worry too much about booking standard, there are tons of places to view the animals. I would have any request you may have noted on your reservation if you haven't already. Have you made your ADR's yet??? I was very suprised yesterday when I called to change some of mine, I again got everything I wanted at the times I wanted........ :confused3 I'm happy and hoping that it is a good sign as far as crowd level!!! I'm glad you decided on AKL......... but be prepared........ you're gonna fall in love with it!!!

If you have any questions ask away......... there are a lot of very knowledgable AKL people here. Welcome to the Jambo!!!

EDIT ** I saw your post about Simba's. We haven't used Simba's, but it looks neat, I peeked in while doing laundry!! We have used The Neverland Club, it is awesome and I'm hoping to use them again this trip!!! I'd feel comfortable saying that I believe all the sitting services are good, and I would recommend them to anyone. Your DD would probably love it!!

LOL ~~ I was "kinda" kidding......... I haven't started packing yet either, but, I've been buying stuff too!!!! I bought a bunch of clothes (I'm with you, gotta have new stuff for vacation) this weekend and bath and body was/is having this huge sale........ DH wasn't too happy when I went in there.......... but, he just held the basket and cringed!!! LOL Hey, when they have Tutti Dolce on sale....... well, what's a girl to do........... :confused3 LOL

We fell in love with the AKL and decided to split our stay next year. Has anyone stayed in the one bedroom suite? What is the view like? Is it roomy enough for a family of 5 (4 adults one child)? Is the pool zero entry?
Thank you for any answers.

Disneyanajc - Yes the pool is zero entry. I haven't stayed in the one bedroom suit (so wish i had, it looks beautiful) go on this site for a 360° look around the one bedroom suit and all around the hotel: http://www.ourlaughingplace.com/asp/movie.asp?request=listMovies&cat=resort&location=AKL

Hey ~~ I know, there's never enough time........ ;) About a week or so ago I added another day!!! :rolleyes1

Actually I said it wrong, it's the Primal Parade from the Zawadi Marketplace, that is the gift shop at the resort. (Which if great!!! We had to stop there everyday!!!) Each night the kids meet up at Zawadi, choose musical instruments and parade around the resort lobby playing the instruments, it's really cute. Then when it's over, they get a certificate for participating. You can check the activities board for the times, but if I remember it was 7:50?? I think....... but just check. We are going to also try to be there for the cookie decorating, DS really wants to do that.

:lmao:

I'm so glad that things are progressing for you. You can always try a TGM day and then have them try a day thier way and see how it goes. I would bet a TGM is way better! I sent you a PM as well.

Any comments?

ohhh that is a good idea. I was thinking about using Garden Grocer (http://www.gardengrocer.com/#DISU-hm-GG) to do mine, but I haven't really decided about the whole towncar/Magical Expess/rental car option. Garden Grocer does have the prices on their website so that should help you some. One thing I did last time was to just bring half full bottles of shampoo and toss out the bottles when I was packing up to come home (it gave me some space for souvies).

Not to mention all of the goodies I got for me! I hear the disney store has the annual sale on now to so I might have to head to the Mall of America and check it out this weekend.

On our December WDW trip, we (really should say "I") used TGM. If you follow his advice, you can get things done early in the day with fewer crowds. He suggests getting to the parks when they first open and then returning to your resort for an afternoon nap. In theory, it really works.

That didn't work for my family. After the second day, they wanted to sleep late. They didn't care if the parks were crowded. If the lines for an attraction were too long, they just moved on to something else.

I would still use his "best days for each park" advice.

I hate to break in on the party. It looks like you guys have a good family thing goin' on here! can I ask a few questions?? :)

I have paid off our days at the AKL finally. We're moving on up to there from the PO-FQ for the last few days of our stay. So IF we have the $ then, what do you think the likelyhood of getting an upgrade to concierge would be? Free upgrade at all??? I've never asked and I'd be ever so embarassed to ask anyway. I'm a weenie! Maybe we could swing oen night there. ahhhh...heaven! Do you think I could inquire about that now?

Then, I remember way back when I started reading about this resort and PLEASE forgive me if I don't go through the hundreds of posts! :teeth:
But does anyone recall the lounge that was mentioned that had some AMAZING alcoholic beverage??? I was hoping to get my son into Simba's Clubhouse and hubby and I go out for a movie and a drink and that would be the place I'd like to find that drink. I SOOO wish I could remember what it was called. if I did, I'd do a search and not bug you guys. But I can't. All I remember is it was in one of the AKL lounges. I PROMISE I'll write it down this time!

That's it for now! Thanks for letting me barge into your family!

HEY!!! it only took me 7 years but I reached my 400th post!!! :lmao: But I lost a couple hundred in the server crash of '99. Aren't I just the gabber?!!? Seriously, I usually am, I just don't frequent this board unless I have a trip coming because it's too depressing.

What are your exact days you will be at AKL. I would imagine the closer to X-mas one gets the more fillled up the lodge will become
Free upgrade at all???
I haven't seen any posts latley about free concierege upgrades latley. You might get a category upgrade like (standrad to pool or savannah or to a deluxe room). Doesn't hurt to ask.
I've never asked and I'd be ever so embarassed to ask anyway. I'm a weenie! Maybe we could swing oen night there. ahhhh...heaven! Do you think I could inquire about that now?
I would say something along these lines if it was me. We (I) was wondering how much would it cost to upgrade to the concierge level? Or something like Is there any chance of a complimentry upgrade? I'm pretty chicken too and have never tried it myself, but I admire people who do it. Remember you most likley won't see those people ever again and they don't know you.
Then, I remember way back when I started reading about this resort and PLEASE forgive me if I don't go through the hundreds of posts! :teeth: But does anyone recall the lounge that was mentioned that had some AMAZING alcoholic beverage???
Victoria Falls Lounge. It is on the 2nd floor right above Boma and to the right as you enter the AKL lobby from the front of the resort.

Nancyg56 - Thanks for the info on the culinary tour. I have some more questions about it. Do you have to book the tour? How long is the tour? Do you have to pay for it?

I wasn't sure if you got the answers to these questions, so sorry if this is a repeat.

You do not have to book the tour in advance, just check what time it is for the day you want (usually somewhere around 4pm) and show up at the Jiko desk. The tour is free  and they give you yummy samples. I can't remember exactly how long it lasted, an hour at the most - probably not even that long though.

My DH and I have attended The Food & Wine Festival for the last two years. We were there last year in September going into the first part of October. I have never had any problem with flies or mosquitoes. I did take wipes for evenings, however we did not find a need for them at all. This year we are going in Nov/Dec, and we are taking a Wishes cruise. I think I will continue to take the bug wipes along. They seem to bring me good luck. :) I think you and your September trip will be fine.

I saw that post too and wonder what the heck!

I was there last yr 1st week in October...Savanah view 3rd floor and didn't see any mating flies...

Never saw a mosquito either...third time in Florida never had a bite yet..October and two times in November.

Only bugs I saw where at 'A bugs life' and they were all cute 'cept the Stink bug

I saw an antelopelike animal that was digging in the dirt making a mud head dress to impress the ladies but I never did see if his mating efforts were realized... :lmao:

Got a great pic of this guy though and some day I'll get photo bucket and post it.

:rotfl: me too. I went crazy at Target last night!

first question is do i need to buy shampoo and hair conditioner or is it provided at the lodge,
Yes they do. I don't use the stuff becuase I prefer to use my own. I can't remember if they have shampoo and conditioner, but I know they for sure have shamppoo. I will check in my bathroom later because I brought the stuff home with me.

and next, is it possible to ship a package of stuff in advance of our arrival to the akl as we have purchased a case of water, soda, snacks etc that i really am starting to think is gonna weigh us down luggage wise when we fly, hoping i can ship this stuff in advance would be much easier
Yes you can. I have done this before. I used UPS to send it to me. Here is what you will need on the outside packaging label:

On the UPS Website (http://wwwapps.ups.com/calTimeCost?loc=en_US&WT.svl=SubNav) you can claculate the time and cost to send your package. It will give you an idea of when to go and ship your package (I sent mine from a UPS Store).

They provide a combination shampoo/conditioner - by the end of 4 days I was really missing my own conditioner! Not at AKL, but last october (2nd wk) we were eaten alive by mosquitoes waiting for MNSSHP near Pecos Bills - first time I've ever had a mosquito problem at WDW - but was so glad I always carry the Off wipes - we are very cautious about mosquitoes as we lost my DBr-in-L to West Nile Virus 2 summers ago - so, better safe than sorry - the little wipies don't take up any space in your bag and can be a life saver if/when you might need them.
BTW - the kid's $1 ponchos from target had a plastic snap at the base of the hood - kept DNeph's hood from blowing off in the wind! :thumbsup2 I just went back to load up my 'travel box' with them for future trips. :smooth:

When we checked in, I didn't even ask!!! We were just upgraded. We had booked standard and were upgraded to deluxe savannah. I was thrilled, but thought that it was due to the time / season we went, which was Jan./Feb. it was not too crowded. I'm hoping for an upgrade again, but if not, I am prepared to pay for it, However, I am also prepared to FIRST ask if any complimentary upgrades are avail. before I ask how much it cost to upgrade!!! It doesn't hurt to ask if it's not automatically offered!!! Right :thumbsup2

However, IF you HAVE TO have Savannah, I'd suggest just to be on the safe side either go ahead and book it or be prepared to PAY for the upgrade if need be. You will love the resort no matter which room / view you have.

Thanks for the reply wendypooh. I'm not bothered about the Savannah view as we have stayed at AKL before and know that there's great places to watch the animal from but my mum would love to have a Savannah view room (but cant afford to pay for it). I know we will have a great time what ever happens because its such a beautiful resort but i hope we get an upgrade coss i know how much my mum would enjoy it.

On the UPS Website (http://wwwapps.ups.com/calTimeCost?loc=en_US&WT.svl=SubNav) you can claculate the time and cost to send your package. It will give you an idea of when to go and ship your package (I sent mine from a UPS Store).

Hope that helps :sunny:

Thanks for the reply wendypooh. I'm not bothered about the Savannah view as we have stayed at AKL before and know that there's great places to watch the animal from but my mum would love to have a Savannah view room (but cant afford to pay for it). I know we will have a great time what ever happens because its such a beautiful resort but i hope we get an upgrade coss i know how much my mum would enjoy it.

Hi, I didn't realize you were coming from England!! I don't always look at where someone is from!! How long is your stay?? I would probably have it noted on yours / your moms reservation that it is her anniversary. Also, any other request you may have. (i.e. we requested non-smoking, DS has to use a nebulizer 3 times a day, I also requested 3rd or 4th floor, and bunk beds......) So, make your request based on what is most important first on your reservation. Also, like I stated, if you aren't offered an upgrade, ask if there are any complimentary upgrades. Good Luck, I'm sure it'll be wonderful.

OK, just got off the phone with a great CM named Betty at AKL. Here is the info she gave me on the Adventure Camp.

*** The Adventure Camp is an Interactive adventure for children ages 6-14. Camp includes real ostrich egg painting, private lodge tour with animal viewing and lunch overlooking the Savannah. Space is limited to 10 children. The camp cost $70.00 and is from 10-2 on Wed. ONLY. You may sign up for this once you are at the resort, you do not need to book it early.

( I'm guessing this is not a widely known activity so getting in is not a problem.)

The children meet up with the savannah guide outside of Simba's cubhouse at 10 am. Lunch is served on the second floor balcony overlooking Arusha Rock. The ostrich egg is $30.00 which IS included in the price.

We are considering this for DS while we are there in Sept. I know he'd enjoy it!! Hope this info helps all who were interested.

We will be staying 9 nights this time from September 1st. So far we have requested non smoking and a room NEAR or ABOVE the lobby. We are going to change it to non smoking and a room ABOVE the lobby as we dont want to be out near the buses on the lobby floor. Thanks again for your help!

Oh boy. Now look what I did. Not only did I call to see about concierge upgrade and if there was availability for another day to tack on to our original ressie but I went and did both! 6 days PO-FQ and 4 in the ALK Concierge as opposed to teh original 3 days in a regular savannah room! Golly G! I love the "movin' on up" part of our vacations. Just extra stuff to look forward to. Thank God I have 5 more months to pay that part off. Better paint some more horses eh?

Happy Friday! You know what that means....it is time for our weekly Zebra Dome Anonymous meeting! :rotfl2:

Let us start with a roll call: My name is Angel and I am a zebra dome abuser. I have not had a zebra dome since October of 2005...Darn it :earseek:

My...you all have been "busy" on this thread. And quite humorous too this week. Thank you, I was in the need for some good laughs.
I know that Wendypooh has been hitting the zebra domes. Wendy you have to be getting that high somewhere to keep up your energy to plan a wedding and get ready for your vacation.

Ppony your work is beautiful. I would love to see a picture of yours sons Lion King Room. Willya, willya pretty please. :artist: And let me welcome you to our little piece of paradise AKL style. :welcome: I glad you overcame your fear of a large thread. We are just a fun group that LOVES the AKL.

My laptop has been having wireless problems for the last two weeks. My DH took it in and the repair people could not find anything wrong with it. Therefore, they referred him to the cable company. Our wireless was new and they are going to replace it. However, they have to send it in and that takes 6-8 weeks. :scared1: So my sweet DH is going down to buy a new wireless thingy. I think he was worried that I could not plan the "perfect vacation" with out getting on HIS computer for the next 6-8 weeks. So my laptop should be back up and running tonight :flower3: I will be posting more often as well as….. enter scary music. Trying to post pictures!!! I have had “professional help” through the kindness of Scoutsmom and I still have problems. One of these days, I will get it down, and you all will hear the sound of the Disney band playing loudly followed by my shrieks of delight.

Lovfigment - I am so looking forward to your trip report. I sure you will have pictures too. Try to get some rest this weekend too. After all, if you work too much you will need another vacation.

Welcome to all the new faces I see here. Shyjade, Gems_smiling, :cheer2: as well as some that have been away for a little while. Have a great week end everyone!

You are going to love the concierge lounge! The CM's are friendly, making it a nice place to sit and drink in the ambiance. I enjoyed taking a glass of wine back to our room, out onto the balcony to watch the animals while the rest of the family was getting ready for dinner. The cordials and evening pastry was a nice treat at the end of the day.

I will confess that we were on the fence beteen AKL and the Poly this time, and I was rooting for the AKL because it has this masterpiece of a cappucino machine. This little gem is one thing that you cannot get anywhere else, I believe.

Have a great time!

Just wanted to ask everyone to keep my mom in your prayers because she is still in ICU and will be there at least until Monday. Her breathing continues to be a concern and she had to be put back on a respirator for 2 days (the day before her birthday which was Wed) and the pulmonary doctor says he is still not out of the woods as she continues to have fluid on her lungs despite the medications and draining. And now she is getting episodes of rapid heartbeat since Monday! Thanks in advance!
Hope to catch with everyone soon.

Okie dokie. Let's see if I can do this right. HTML and I aren't exactly friends. ;) My little guy has had this room now for about 3 1/2 years and now he's asking for a Cirque Du Soliel room or I'm thinkin' a Pirate's room. :) Though I think THAT would be more for MY enjoyment if I painted Depp. :rotfl2: wink wink
This stuff was done by hand so it too forever but NOW I have an airbrush and I'll get a projector so I can save myself the tons of time drawing things at such a scale. I'm planning on the new nursery as a Bambi room and our bathroom Nemo. :lol obsess much??? pirate:

Hey Scoutsmom99, I didn't realize you're the "go to" person at MNSSHP on 9/29? My DD8 and I will be there that night, and as of this past Monday, we're staying at AKL too! I haven't posted much yet here because I'm still trying to catch up on all the back-posts...starting page 155 today so I should be "caught up" by the end of the workday! ;)

:wave2: I'm staying at CBR during my 2nd trip unless some great AP rates come out for AKL. It would be great to meet up with a fellow Jambo pal at the MNSSHP. Guess I should go back and check out the thread on the Meets board as I know when I orginally talked about it we talked about a late night one and one before the party started, but my plans have changed some since then as I changed dinner reservations around.

We were way down on the Zebra Trail, room 3578, so we were nowhere near the bus stop!!! It was a trek I tell you, it was fine but I'd like to be a little closer in this time!!! fellow AKL lovers - I am so excited that several CMs mentioned the possibility of AKL DVC (even saying there is talk of a separate (2nd) savannah for the center of it) - I know that CM rumors have been wrong before, but you might want to start saving your pennies with me - I can think of nothing better than spending a week in a 2 br villa overlooking the savannah, sipping African wine and eating zebra domes!!! :thumbsup2 Ask around while you're there and see if you can get any more info :listen: :smooth:

I have a couple of quick questions that I hope someone can answer on AKL. I'm sure they have been covered, but can't read through all the posts sorry:(

Do all the rooms have a fridge in them? I was also wondering about the coffee makers if they are standard also? I read somewhere that most of the smoking rooms are in the pool view, is this correct? I request a non~smoking room due to my sons severe allergies/asthma and on my reservations it does say "Guaranteed Non~Smoking" due to allergies. The only reason I ask is we booked a pool view and was wondering if you would still be able to smellt he smoke, ect.. through the halls or vents?? Thanks so much in advance!

Ktink, we just got back AKL concierge level 9 days. DS13 & DS16 did not know where we were staying. We pulled up to the gaurd DH handed the lady our confirmation with a note on top that it was a secret she played along we drove to the front the bellhop came to the window and asked if the Shuttleworth Safari was ready to began. DS13 eyes were so big and smiling so big you could see his tonsils. DS16 was shocked!!! it was the greatest!!worth all the pain and suffering of not telling them!! We planned it the first of Feb and did not go until June 3!!!!DH is starting to plan for next year he is hooked!! :woohoo:   :woohoo:

Hi all, hope there area at least some stale zebra domes left over from Friday's role call... :confused3

kimmar- :cheer2: congrats on finishing your paper-isn't it great to be done a big paper!. (I'm doing a master's degree in nutrition and health and I know being in school as an adult can be really great but also challenging w/ all your other responsibilities  so once again cograts... :woohoo: :dance3:

wendypooh- :sunny: thanks for the info on all the activites-I've definately noticed the times changing each time they are posted along w/ some activity changes...Is that 14 age limit set in stone for the Adventure Camp? (How about if I sign up say three kids... a 14 , a 12 and an 11 and I show up? Doesn' it all balance out? :rotfl2: (DD doen't want to do it :sad2: -she said she'd rather be with us -which I guess is kind of sweet :)

As for the coffee makers( can I bring my own java ) and do they have cups in the room (i'm sure they do but are they AKL cups) or is this a great excuse to buy AKL mugs in the Zawadi Marketplace :rolleyes1 (or when DH isn't looking the cups could mysteriously dissappear only to return at the end of the trip....)

My ADR window opened today and I got all kinds of good stuff including a dinner and breakfast at Boma and a dinner at Jiko. :thumbsup2

I also got a 8:00 reservation at Donald's Breakfast at 8. (What time do you think I should have my brood on the bus to get there on time_I know its only a 5 minute ride but I'm concerned about how often the buses will be riding that early before park opening....

It seems like you're all going so soon :confused3 ...Isn't anyone going late fall/December like me? :hourglass :guilty:

Bon Voyage and Have a blast to anyone going soo...there better be some seriously detailed trip reports... :surfweb:

We have an ADR for Boma at 7:00 so we think we'll miss the storytelling (how long is it). Will there be stuff to do between 4 and 9 besides the storytelling? Is the storytelling worth eating at 9:00 to see (9:00 ADR is availible). Thanks.

Each time we have been to the storytelling it has been different. Most of the time the stories were geared to young children. A few times the CMs would tell stories about their home in Africa (what it is like to live there, their schools, etc.). I wouldn't change my Boma reservation to 9 p.m.

Plutofan1 - there's the Animal Viewing With Night Vision at 8:30-11:00pm which is good. I'm not sure if i would change ADR to 9pm, that's late (depending on when you are used to eating) and its a big gap from 4 - 9 to fill. I have never done the story telling so dont know how long it lasts but maybe you could go along at 6:30 to the story telling and if they have not finished by 7:10pm then leave and go to Boma. Once you get to Boma you will probably be given a buzzer and asked to return when the buzzer goes off (takes about 10-20mins for it to go off).

Also, just as a reminder.......... the times are NOT set in stone. You would need to check the activities board in the lobby for correct times for that day. I was told by a CM that the times can change for things on a daily basis. If I were you, I'd keep your exsisting reservation at Boma.

Wether you are dining or not You can always call AKL from your resort and ask about activity times for that particular day, if the times work out for you then you can always go over for the activity. **( I think If you call from your resort, the front desk can just transfer you -- at no charge to your bill.)

Do all the rooms have a fridge in them?

Yes, every room has a fridge and a coffee maker. The do supply coffee packets as well. There are glass cups in the room. They do sell coffee cups and mugs at Zawadi Marketplace.

I read somewhere that most of the smoking rooms are in the pool view, is this correct?

It is my understanding that the smoking rooms are on the 1st and 2nd floors of the Ostrich and Giraffe Trails. Now wether those are pool view or not -- I do not know. ALSO, I want to point out that I do NOT know this for certain, it's only what I've been told / read here on the boards.

I request a non~smoking room due to my sons severe allergies/asthma and on my reservations it does say "Guaranteed Non~Smoking" due to allergies.

My reservation also states on it that our NON-smoking room is Guaranteed. My DS has to use a nebulizer 3 times a day for breathing treatments. I was told by the CM that while they normally do not guarantee request, medical reasons are almost always guaranteed or other arrangements are made.

The only reason I ask is we booked a pool view and was wondering if you would still be able to smellt he smoke, ect.. through the halls or vents?? Thanks so much in advance!

I cannot answer that one.

If you think it may be a problem, you can call and ask. I personally think you'll be fine though. I"m sure you won't have any problems at all!!! Have a great time.

Going to AKL for two nights as a reward next weekend- no kids. DGrandmother, DSis, and I. Name the top grownup things you would do -in or about the lodge. We have a deluxe savannah room-
can't wait to hear from you all!

Hi Mickeyworld, Welcome :wave2: What a great trip you will have three gals enjoying AKL. There are so many things you can do. They had a spa that you can enjoy numerous treaments. Their pool area is lovely and you can see quite a few animals from viewing areas around the pool. There is a lounge you can have a drink in or you can order from the poll bar. Be sure to look around the lodge. It is really beautiful, all the hand-carved wood work and art work. Here are some activities during the day that you may be interested in.

-Horticulture Activity 9:00am Arusha Rock -Flamingo Activity 9:30am

-Spirit of Africa Art Tour 2:30pm Ogun's Firepit

-Culinary Tour of Africa 4:00pm (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) 3:45 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) Jiko Podium

--Animal Viewing With Night Vision 8:30-11:00pm Uzima Savanah

Please check times of above activities when you check in. They change sometimes daily.

Be sure to have a meal at AKL either Boma or Jiko is excellent. Check out the Zawadi Marketplace. It is the largest "gift shop" of any Disney resort.

Make sure to take the time either early morning, late afternoon 3:30 ish or at dusk to enjoy your savannah balconey. Animal watching with a cup of coffee or a nice drink is some of my favorite things to do. It is also intersting to watch the animals during the rain. When we were there last October they really had run in the rain. They were running and playing or just grazeing enjoying the coolness.

Have a wonderful time together and please come back here and let us know how the trip went.

Hey folks, me again. Just stumbled across this online and hadn't seen it posted here in my short tenure. I know I would have found it informative in my early planning stages and others may as well. It appears to be some type of resort map with all the locations and room numbers on it:

Doesn't mention anything regarding smoking/non but at least it gives folks an idea of room number vs. location.

:woohoo:   :woohoo:[/QUOTE]

Wow, you can REALLY keep a secret! I have decided that I'm going to keep it from them until we get there. The only thing is w/ ME but they still won't find out that way until we are at the airport. Oh, I can't wait :Pinkbounc Right now they think they've figured it out. DH had thought we were staying at WL and I "Tivo"ed WL on Great Hotels and insisted that we sit down and watch it. The entire time DDs and DH were eyeing each other and smirking :lmao:

Hey Patricia ~~ Hope you are having a good fathers day as well!!! DH and DS are taking a nap!!! As for the coffee......... we don't drink it, so I only saw the packages, but never opened them, so I don't have a clue........ sorry!! Your DS will LOVE the parade...... he can do it every night if you are at the resort at that hour!! We are going to try the cookie decorating too. I wonder if your DD is interested in the Adv. camp?? She might like that...... it is kinda "grown - up" for her since parent's don't go!!! I've always wanted to go over the holidays, to see the decorations.......... I've seen pics and it's so lovely ~~ the only drawback is the potential crowds. Also, just as a side note......... I saw some pics of the Bibbity Bobbity Boutique at DTD....... that is sooooo cute....... is your DD too old for that??? :confused3 We thought we might take DS to the pirate area over there........ I saw some cute pics of that too ~ DS is crazy for pirates and wants to "build his own hat"!!! OK Ok, I'm just babbling........... have a good day!!!!

The coffee comes in a pod. It makes four cups of coffee, just enough to fill the two small mugs that were in the room. I'm not sure of the brand, but it wasn't bad (a lot better than Nescafe).

I bought the large mugs at Zawadi. They hold 18-20 oz.--just enough coffee to get me going in the morning.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has been praying for my Mom and can you please continue. After a good day yesterday, today her white blood count is up and doctors think she has an infection but can not pinpoint exactly where. So they took a bunch of cultures and are starting her on two general antibiotics until they can figure out where the infection is. Nurse also said she may have to go back on the respirator, this would be the 2nd time since she intially came off after surgery.

Dear LaWalz,

Your Mom continues to be in my DH and my prayers, as she has been since you first wrote of her surgery. I have my prayer group also praying for your Mom.

My DH had his aortic valve replaced back on January 30th for the second time in eight years. It is a difficult surgery, however the human body is a magnificent structure. It heals itself and is so strong. My DH had to return to ICU twice. The heart is irritable after the surgery and takes time to relaxe. I am sure you are talking to your mom and telling her how proud you are of her and that she is strong. She will know you are there even if they put her back on a respirator. So keep talking and reinforcing how great she is doing. She will really start to improve with the new antibiotoics. :sunny:

Make sure you are getting some rest and taking care of yourself too. Once she comes home she will need you to care for her. There is a very good site I found very helpful when my DH had his surgery. I still referred to it for information post-surgical. In addition to posting to help people who are just starting to "climb the mountain" The site is http://www.valvereplacement.com They have a forum where you can ask questions, get answers, support as well as prayers.

Sending prayers and hugs,

Angel

Heya Angel.

So far so good on the "keeping it a secret" front. Susan's new luggage came in and luckily we still have so many boxes left to unpack, a few more just blended right in... Don is picking up a "Jewel Tigger" to add to the stuff to be in the room when we arrive, kind soul that he is, when they get the ears done for me.

This Friday is the big day. Once I get the ears from Don, I'll put together all the "stuff" I've been accumulating for her trip and surpise her. Then she'll know that we're going to Disney, but not where we'll be staying. Don and Co. will be keeping the copy of our itinierary out of the usual packet of info on arrival at AKL so she won't have any idea what's coming from one day to the next. I'll get it when I meet him to give him the ring for the dessert at Victoria and Albert's.

Heh, I even managed to get her over to the Sportsman's Warehouse and have her pick out some UV blocking, quick-dry clothes and such without her figuring it out (you know Florida in the summer). I think she still believes we're going out to the mountains in our new home state or something.

Hopefully I can keep my trap shut for a few more days. I've nearly slipped a couple times recently.

LaWalz, I'm sending out prayers and all kinds of good thoughts for your mom this morning. :sunny:

Your mom has had an intense surgery and the recovery is sometimes slow and I think even harder than the surgery, since you know how long the surgery takes but no one can give you a definate time frame on recovery and everybody is different. (DH had a kidney removed last autumn.)

Angel was right though about taking care of yourself. You obviously love your mother a great deal and even though she is the one laying in the bed-you are going through a really rough experience watching her. Make sure you treat yourself with love and kindness as well.

Thank you for taking the time to post an update. I have been thinking of your Mom, and wondering how she is. She will continue to be in my prayers.

Please try to remember to take a little time for rest yourself. My Mom was very ill last summer, and I never realized the toll it took on me until after she was home, and the responsibility was shared between my 3 siblings and myself.

Bob

Gosh, I don't know who is more excited about your trip....you or the AKL bunch...I can't say AKL Wild Bunch because the tag fairy skipped this wild wannabe :sad2:... I know you will manage to keep the surprise form your Susan. Just in case you do not have time to check in before you go, have a wonderful magical trip at the most romantic of Disney locations with your "must be very special Susan." :wizard:

The coffee comes in a pod. It makes four cups of coffee, just enough to fill the two small mugs that were in the room. I'm not sure of the brand, but it wasn't bad (a lot better than Nescafe).

I bought the large mugs at Zawadi. They hold 18-20 oz.--just enough coffee to get me going in the morning.

John's Mom-just saw this...Thanks for the info.... :sunny: -I'll probably bring extra coffee because it has become painfully aware to me that I have a serious java monkey on my back.... :rotfl2: plus I know now I definately have the excuse I need to purchase those mugs from Zawadi... because if one pot fills two small mugs then I guess it would also fill one big mug...with those couple of other things I was planning on purchasing... :woohoo: -oh yeah the caffeine is kicking in... :cool1:

Doing some catch up here. In between being sick and not being able to get on to the resorts board due to the server being so busy :badpc: (I can't even get the more smilies to pop up now) I'm still back on 177. Work was a killer this past weekend and I was supposed to be in today but I ended up calling in sick (I really am sick have a slight temp and a terrible sore throat), but I feel gulity none the less for calling in. Ok on with the show:

bjakmom I remember reading about those DVC AKL rumors awhile back and let me tell you I have always wanted to join DVC, but SSR just does not appeal to me in the least. So if AKL DVC were to happen I think I would hop back on the DVC wagon and check it out again. Although I would hope they would add a quiet pool to the addition if that were to happen.
WAHMto5 I'm sure someone answered the coffee question, but in 2004 I had the gaurnteed no-smoking room for my mom and we had a pool view (4428 zebra trail)and did not have any problems with smoke on the balcony or from the hallways or vents.
gems_smiling Gems I missed before that you were traveling at the same time as Wendypooh, ktink, and myself. We all have to meet up.
mickeyworld We enjoy Victoria Falls Lounge and a good dinner at Jiko and just relaxing pool side when we go.
Plutofan1 Don't miss the night vision goggles they are pretty cool. Also a night swim is always fun
Princess Dinah What an awesome suprise. That is so neat that the CMS were in on it too.
PracPerfPatricia I would be out for the bus by 7:30 to get to AK and allow time to walk to donalds. Ususally the bus sits at AKL and AK for awhile before it goes back.
ktink good idea to tivo great hotels. lol I bet they think they have you figured out.
mmmears welcome to the Jambo thread
LAWalz23 your mom is still in my prayers. I hope the antibiotics they are giving her help with the infection.
AKLGoofy I hope when you come back you give us a trip report on how everything went! I'm so excited for you and your wife.
tinknme I agree the server is going crazy. It has taken me almost 2 hours to get through all the new pages here because each page shows up server too busy :badpc: than I work on something else come back and it is the same story :guilty:

As I was going through everything I saw there are a lot of us heading down in September :goodvibes Looks like we will all be in great company :thumbsup2 I hope all of the dad's had a great father's day yesterday :sunny:

Dec. 8-18 We're arriving at WDW on the 8th but not moving up to AKL until the 14th (though...ahem, I'm probably gonig to move that to the 13th. ;) It's not too hard to bend my hubby's arms to get more time at AKL ) and we're leaving WDW on the 18th. :( If I didn't already have my airline tickets I'd probably add another day or two. sigh :guilty:

Wow! The closest I will get to a safari is AK, and the next best lodging will have to be AKL.

I know that your DS will love the lodge, my DGD was 4 and she loved to sit on the balcony and try to identify the animals from the guide provided. My DH and I would meander out by Arusha rock and could hear her from the 5th floor as she exclaimed over each animal in her view. You could not have chosen a lovlier place to enjoy a family gathering. :thumbsup2

I have 2 roms at Pop Century booked for the free dining Sept 13-17 for myself, DH and 2 17 year old girls for 4 nights. My DH has decided that we should upgrade. He enjoys early morning walks, and relaxing around the resort, and Pop just doesn't seem like his kind of place. My choices are 2 rooms at POR or one room at AKL. Are the rooms at AKL roomy enough for 4 adults? I've never stayed here before and love the idea of staying at a deluxe. The cost of one room at AKL would actually be about the same as 2 at Pop.

WendyPooh - I also bleed purple and gold in the land of the Ragin' Cajuns.

I'm sure this won't come as a surprise to some of you but I'm seriously considering going back to a moderate, CBR in paticular. I'm thoroughly embarrassed that I can't make my mind up. Really what has happened is a friend of mine is at CBR now and she emailed me and she LOVES it. Our kids are about the same age and they love the pool. I really want to stay at AKL but we could save $450 by staying at CBR and that $ could go towards our flight. The $ really isn't an issue it's just the guilt factor. I'm such a tightwad and it's killing me to spend so much on this trip I think that's why I keep going back and forth.

Scoutsmom, Can you help me out? I know you love CBR but aren't the rooms about the same size?

Another lady that I work w/ is a DVC owner and has stayed at many resorts she is telling me that she would go w/ CBR because she knows me really well and she thinks it is more of my taste. The family still has NO idea where we're staying and to be quite honest I think I've made them about sick talking about it all the time. Any opinions are VERY welcome.

PracPerfPatricia glad to help and nothing wrong with picking up some more lessons as far as I'm concerned!
NJBILL that is a neat site. Thanks for sharing
gems_smiling For parks other than AK I would say at least 45 minutes ahead of time.
Cyndo723 :welcome: to the thread. I of course like the idea of AKL, the rooms will be larger than the ones at POP and slightly larger than those at POR. The other thing to mention is that AKL does not have a walking path at it (I suppose he could walk the halls or do laps around the pool though).

scoutsmom99
06-20-2006, 06:00 PM
Ktink Thank-you also for the well wishes. I can't belive we are in the 70s already :woohoo:

I don't work at a bank, but I work in retail and I know it seems everything comes at once (customer isssues, register malfunctions, etc). Seems like lately we are either dead or up to our eyeballs with customers and paperwork.

On to more pressing things the rooms at CBR and AKL are like the same size CBR 340 vs 344 at AKL(unless you are doing deluxe at AKL). It is really hard to say which you should do. I hear you about it being expensive $450 isn't too much of a difference, but it is a a lot of money you can put towards other trip things or other items you may need. hmmmmm

Do I remember correctly in you saying that you might be heading to WDW in Feb 2007? I would say if you are looking at value season time in Feb to do one resort now and the other later.

If you like tropical FL theming you will just fall in love with CBR. Yes it is more spread out, but I kinda like that. They have a lot to do at the resort pools (7 total (6 quiet one theme), water mice, boats, nice walking path, good foodcourt, beaches (w/hammocks), a few playgournds, you can see Illuminations at night, and of course beautiful landscaping to mention a few things. The only thing I can say is that the main theme pool is not huge and there is only one hot tub. The bus service is good at CBR as well. The resort is centerally located. MGM is about a 5 minute bus ride, Epcot about 7-8 minutes, MK 10 min, AK/BB 10-12 min, DTD/TL 5-7 min. The resort also offers an internal shuttle that goes around just the resort.

If you are thinking about CBR and do not do the preferred room put a request in for Jamica buildings 44, 45, or 46. They are close to the Jamiaca bus stop (usually the first pick-up and first drop off...unless you are headed to DTD/TL). and they are also close to the bridge that leads to Old Port Royale (food court, pool, shops, Shutters, etc). I hope this helps you some :goodvibes

I kept thinking about how much my boys would love it here as well. Seeing the animals, all the activities, the pool, just the whole atmosphere. So I put aside my thoughts of the difference in price & booked it. I know when my boys see where we are really staying that the look in theirs eyes are going to be worth every penny.

I know this is a tough decision for you & where ever you decide to stay your family will have a wonderful time :yay: Do what you feel is right & don't feel guilty about it, us women have the right to change our minds ;) Good luck!

We are planning on flying down if we can get a good deal from SW and the difference would pay for the flight down there. Right now I'm leaning toward the two rooms. The extra bath may be more than worth it, and I know DH will enjoy the walking paths at POR and POFQ. I've just always wanted to stay at AKL since I saw it under construction years ago. It's so unique. Maybe next time. Can I have a zebra dome anyway?

To be honest with you, with 2 girls that age I'd go for the 2 rooms also!!! Now, I know you'd LOVE the lodge, and for the most part would be glad to upgrade........ BUT, I can clearly see the headache each morning!!! :scared1: LOL Plus, I'm sure you and DH would enjoy the privacy!!! :rolleyes1 We've stayed at POFQ, it's nice and the paths are lovely!! I agree, go for the 2 rooms, it's probably for the best!!

AND, of course you should come over to the lodge and have a victoria falls mist and a couple of zebra domes!!! Really, you'll enjoy exploring the resort!

As for the USL thing......... :confused3 We still do not refer to is as ULaLa..... it'll always be USL to us!!! ;) BUT, after living in BR for so long, we're tried and true LSU fans, can you tell??? LOL It is amazing around here, the attitude towards LSU and how people here just love and support the school. Now, if only we could lure Saban back........................... ::yes:: we'd (the whole town) be on :cloud9:

Thanks Wendy :goodvibes I can't belive that we are dancing in the 70s. Part of me wants summer to just come to an end so we can go to WDW, but part of me wants it to last longer as winter is long and cold here in MN.

I know, I find myself wishing the summer away too!!! I really don't want it to go by fast, but, I'm ready to go!!! ;) Those dome withdrawals are hard on a girl........... :sad2:

Thanks Janet. I'm going to have to weigh out the differences on what I think we'll get the most bang for. We are planning on flying down if we can get a good deal from SW and the difference would pay for the flight down there. The Ding special for Nashville normally comes out the first week in July so we'll see. But girls, I'll tell ya right now if we drive down, it's AKL all the way! Thanks a million you are all fabulous! :thumbsup2

Not to hijack ~~ but where in Nashville do you live??? My Granny lives in Green Hills. It's a "small world".......... LOL

I just had a similar conversation with my neighbor last night. We are both both booked in AKL. He now wants to fly and not drive, and is considering shortning his stay at AKL to Save $$ or swithing to a moderate. At least for me, the amount of time we are in the hotel for vacation is minimal. The only reason we are in a deluxe resort is that this may be our last visit to WDW,as we prefer cruises for vacations. My kids are at a great age to still enjoy the "magic",and wanted to do something special, and we love animals.
I guess my advice is to switch to where you feel comfortable. If you are not going to stay at the hotel a lot, it may not matter all that much. You can still visit AKL. Questioning yourself before/during/after your trip will remove some of the pleasure for you,and make it less enjoyable. You can do CBR now and try AKL at a later date, or split your stay between CBR and AKL. This way you can do them both.

Thanks for the input. It's always nice to have people weigh in because you point out things that I might not have thought of. I'm going to do some research on CBR and take some time to weigh out what's going to be more important being the deluxe experience or extra $ while we're down there. I do want to use the pool more this trip so I need to investigate that. :goodvibes

Wendypooh I actually live in Shelbyville, but we fly out of Nashville we're only maybe 50 miles south of Nashville. We're the home of the TN Walking Horse.

Hey, I know exactly where Shelbyville is!!! ;)

My oldest son, the one getting married, actually lives in Huntsville, he moved about a year ago. We have family there too. It is a small world.

Anyway, as for the resort switch, do what you feel most comfortable with and what works best for your family. I think we all too often don't listen to that little voice in our heads!! Perhaps you've been so indecisive because you KNOW, (without knowing) it may not be the right thing for you guys right now!!! (Does that make sense??) ;) You know what I mean, I hope!!!! I know for me, if I wasn't "sure", then I'd just fret about it the entire time and not have a good time. Good Luck!!

It really is a small world, Huntsville is just a hop, skip, and a jump from us too.

Yeah I know what you mean about the resort switch. And maybe you're right! I have a bad tendency to over analyze things and I don't mind going all out for DH and the DDs but when it comes to something I want it's easier to push it back to save a few bucks. I'm sure I'm not the only person who does that. The fact of the matter is that dd's and dh could care less as to where we stay, well oldest dd wants to stay at GF (she gets that from me ;) )Anyway I'm the one wanting the whole AKL experience, then I think well by George, I'll book it then I do then a month or so later I feel guilty.

Enough about that, so how is the wedding planning coming along?

Yeah, I know what you mean, you are certainly not the only one!!! We all do it!!! Don't stress about it......... just do what you feel is right and you'll have a wonderful trip!!!

As for wedding plans......... we'll they've pretty much decided on a "hawaiian / polynesian" theme, they want just a low key, fun, party. I think it will be a "luau" type wedding / party / reception here at the house, we are beginning to discuss things about having it here, and what we need to do with that. They don't seem to be in a "hurry" as no date yet, but they say.... "soon". :confused3 What's a Mom to do!!! LOL I'm glad they decided to do it this way, I think it'll be wonderful and what's better than a great party!!!! We just need to find a great idea for a pineapple cake!!! They want the cake to have pineapple in it!!! I'm sure it can be done.......... but, they aren't at the "ordering a cake" place just yet!!! Mostly, we are just talking about ideas they like....... and then finding a pastor who'll wear shorts, hawaiian shirt and flip flops.......... LOL :p Anyone know how long it takes to roast a pig???? LOL Kidding........... but, that's what they want!!! I better get to the party store and start stocking up on tiki torches and grass skirts!!!! ;)

ktink-I think you're really lucky to be going to Disney for two trips! :sunny: That you'll get to stay at two different resorts, with different themes which gives a whole different flavor to your vacation...and you can always drop by the AKL for dinner and zebra domes :woohoo: I wanted to do concierge on this trip but when we figured out the difference..it just wasn't in the cards...in fact we've even booked pool view which is $55 less a night than savannah view...The $385 over 7 nights, will come in handy for dining or shopping... :teeth: POFQ, also a moderate was really nice when we went with my inlaws...and just between you and me as much as I love the AKL, I still have a little bit of a thing for the WL too :rolleyes1 ...

NJBill-cool site-I think it would be nice to know some words before we left-it all adds to the overall experience :cool1:

Hey does anyone think we could get the AKL to start one of those monthly clubs like the ones they do for fruit and flowers...you know fruit of the month clubs... but for zebra domes...? ::yes::

I do feel better about our trip, I have now changed over to CBR and DH confimed that we will be going back in Feb for our anniversary. So I'll still get what I want after all. The only thing is that we'll only be able to stay for 2 or 3 nights but at least we'll get a taste of it and hopefully have to go back for more ;)

When I was on the phone w/ CRO she told me that you can only have one reservation at a time, is that so? :confused3 We would like to go ahead and get the wheels in motion for that trip, well I would anyway. :teeth:

:cool1: :cool1: :cool1: Way to go Karen! I know you guys will enjoy CBR (my moderate home away from AKL). I think you made a great decision and you will have the money you saved for other WDW activites and to put towards you anniversary trip.

The person you spoke to from CRO is wrong about not being able to have more than one ressie at a time. I currently have two ressies for free dining only a couple weeks apart and they are both in my name.

I think the ZDCM idea (Zebra Dome Club of the Month) was a stroke of genius of my part if I do say so myself... :cool1:

and yes the smilies are all different...and although there are some really cute new ones...it was really rough the first day since I usually check the boards in the morning and I wasn't fully caffienated (sp?) :surfweb: and I thought I had lost my already tenuous grasp on reality... :rotfl2: Hey speaking of which don't you think there should be a zebra dome smilie?

I'm actually looking forward to CBR I guess it's easier because we are going to do AKL in Feb. I'm going to call CRO back when I get home because I had my debit card and all ready to go but she told me that we couldn't have 2 ressies at the same time. I'll keep you posted.

Actually I couldn't wait til I got home so I called CRO and the CM told me that I could have different ressies. I gave her the story and she said the only time you can't do that is if it's for the same dates so apparently the CM i got before wasn't aware of that.

Anyway, we're booked for AKL Feb 2-4, we may have to shuffle the dates around a little closer to time.

I forgot to ask, What's going on the end of January? :confused3 There were only deluxe savannah view rooms available for the 26-28.

Gotta get a new ticker now. :thumbsup2

...glad to have ya here...

...BTW-I am so thankful to have had the experiences I had in Africa. Truly opened my eyes to the world. Never mind the crazy experiences, beautiful country, wildlife...

....my girlfriend, who is the music teacher at our school, is going to Africa for 3 weeks this summer (South Africa, I believe) and she will be sorta an 'ambassador' of good will; she will also get to teach at 3 different schools, too. I'm sooo excited for her....

Kimmar-Thank you!

Your friend is in for a great time. I have yet to go to S. Africa. Mostly East and Central. The Music is amazing! WHat a great language to be able to communicate with. There are lots of markets and things with homemade music-cassettes. Not to mention all the regulars-Ladysmith Black Mombaza, Miriam Makeba...There's afropop. all really wonderful.

You can see I'm a big fan of WL, so I've been reluctant to move..but the time has come!!!

I'm getting so excited to stay here and have read through page 45....I am thinknig about arriving a day before everyone else so me and DS can enjoy the resort....

We are booked with 4 rooms Sav view. I haven't yet made requests b/c wanted to read through thread.

What is your advice about this-I'd like a great view :rotfl2: prbably zebras and/or giraffes for the 2 little boys, plus convenientky near elevator/pool for the DGP's. Would love to request Bunk beds too on one of the connecting rooms.

SO-I was thinking to book a standard for one night just to have the day before everyone arrives for pool, flamingos etc.. or Sav view if I didn't have to move and could get the others who are checking in the next day connected, if you follow?

Advice welcomed :sunny:
