Boy, have I been out of the loop! Haven't been around the DVC boards in a long time, and it sure feels good to be back. :) But I have a question...when did this board start, and what goes here vs the other DVC board? It seems like some things would belong on the other board, and vice versa. :confused3

Nice to see some familiar faces! :)

Tell me about it. You will notice MANY post get moved back and forth and sometimes there is no rime or reason to it. It appears many are still confused as to why they broke the board in to and what goes where..smjj

Hi MaryAnn! I'm still trying to figure this out, too. I "think" this board is for talking about just about anything, including trip reports. The other board is more for the technical questions....how does DVC work? what is a resale? etc., etc. But as smjj says, it's not entirely clear what belongs where!

Well, that answers that question! LOL

I can't figure it out either. When I have a new thread to post I just put it on one of the DVC boards, I just guess. They will change it for whatever reason if it is on the wrong board. I too wonder what gives, but I am happy to see less of those welcome home posts now. They were boring!!

I dont think anyone knows the difference, I made a similar post awhile back and pretty much got no specific answer

The only definitive I get from the faq is that the Community Board is for: congratulationing new memebers(ie welcome home) , DVC resort trip reports, and trip countdowns.(ie 30 day dance etc)

other than that there never seems to be a rhyme or reason to where they go. its a rather pain in the neck actually

if the community boward was ONLY for those 3 things then that would be helpful. Then everything else could go in the other and you would be able to know which to read, but the way it is you have to read both.

Why do 2 socks go into the laundry but only one comes out? Does BigFoot exist? What exactly is Goofy? Which came first - the chicken or the egg? What posts belong on the DVC board as opposed to the DVC Community board?

Some questions were just meant to remain unanswered ....... :flower:

Domain registration says that disboards.com was created on 10-20-2000. So, no earlier than that I would guess.

The DVC Community Board has not been around that long, although I cannot off-hand remember when I first saw it. There was before the general Community Board and something called the Debate Board. When members posted general stuff on the DVC Board, it often got sent to the Community Board. When someone posted (at least once every month) the two infamous questions "Are 5 allowed in a 1BR?" and "Shouldn't renting be banned?" those inevitably ended up on the Debate Board. I guess they created the DVC Community Board so they could send all overruns from the DVC Board to the same place.

As to this site as a whole, it has been around at least since 1998. You will see in my name post that my join date is "August 1999." In fact, I was here about a year before that; in August 1999 they changed the type of boards they were using and all here before then got a new join date. Darn thing has been around long enough now that they probably need to create a "Company History" page. I know a number of the other posters, like PamOKW, Dean and Mike, go way back too; somebody just whispered in my head to get a life.

As best as I can determine, the DVC-Community board was spun off from the regular DVC discussion board on Oct 31, 2004. Here's a link to Doc's original announcement of the new board and you'll note it's dated 10/31/04.

As far as the DISboards go, this discussion forum was originally under the www.wdwinfo.com domain before Pete moved it to it's own domain name of DISboards.com. So this discussion board has actually been around a lot longer.

Answers are readily available.

1. If you put in 3-socks, you'll always get 2 socks back. Problem solved.

2. Big Foot does exist, wears a size 22 shoe, and plays professional basketball.

3. Goofy is simply yfoog spelled backwards. I thought everybody knew that.?

4. The Rooster

5. OK, you got me on this one. I guess some questions really don't have answers... :rolleyes1

LOL Thanks...now I can sleep tonight, except for that one nagging question...what to post on which DVC board. ;)

I've been around myself since at least August '99 (note tag), under the name Mare, and for some period of time before that. I've seen many many changes over the years. Every so often I miss some, like the creation of this board!

One of them is behind the dryer. Only in our imagination. Goofy is dog who acts like a person, whereas Pluto is a dog who acts like a dog. The egg came first because the chicken evolved from other egg-laying creatures. But I have no idea which posts belong on which board -- there are some things beyond our comprehension.

Maybe the answer is hidden in the DaVinci Code. ;)

I remember first reading a trip report by Pete in 1998 when he was still working for UPS but I can't remember what city he was from. (Was it Detroit?) Then in 1999 (I believe) he made the big move to Florida and began the DisBoards full time.

Drusba is right, some of us have been around longer than our "join dates" show because of the domain change. I'm just happy these boards are still here and have only gotten better with age! ;)

How do you get those moving pictures (like the post above this one)?
I finally figured out the countdown timer and even the signature, but the posting photos and such are beyond my ken.

So...where do these pictures come from?

ColoradBelle1,

Fancy stuff like that is linked to from a web server. Either it has to be preexisting or you have post it yourself. In this case it's an animated gif. If you want to see what is actually in the signature, just "view source" from one of your browser menus.

The code for this item was "img src="http://disgalaxy.com/Stories/Fantasia/img_mirror.gif" border="0" alt="" /" with angle brackets <> replacing the outer quotes. When I put it in my message, the same item will appear:

<img src="http://disgalaxy.com/Stories/Fantasia/img_mirror.gif" border="0" alt="" />

See?

So...where do these pictures come from? The one you're referring to is from Disgalaxy.com.

I don't recommend going through Source Code as what you'll find there is the actual HTML code. The Dis boards has turned off HTML so you can't enter it directly. You use VB code which in turn then generates the HTML code.

The easiest way to see where an image came from is to simply right-click on the image and then select properties. From there you can get the address.

If you want to put the same image in your post (assuming you have permission to use the image), just put the address in with the image tags in front and behind: [ img]URLforTheimageGoeshere] /img] without the spaces.

Simpliest way to actually do it is just paste the address into your post (or signature if you want it there for all your posts), then select the address by click/drag to highlight it, then click on the insert image icon which is part of the formatting controls located above your text entry screen where you enter your post.

This particular image is an animated gif which simply means it uses a different computer 'code' than other types of images. The most common type would be the jpg image which you would use for photos.

You can make your own animated gifs if you want. You can download a free, simple program from Microsoft that will allow you to do some easy ones. All it does is show one picture, then replace it with another, and repeats the process. Animated gifs in their simpliest form change the entire picture. So in this example it would be everything being replaced, not just the image in the mirror. It's because the background and the part with Mickey is the same in all four pictures, those parts don't appear to change at all, while the part in the mirror is different, so it appears to change. But actually the entire picture is changing, showing 4 separate full size pictures. That would be the most simple animated gif. There are commercial programs for sale that are much more sophisticated than that, and it's possible the example you see was created using such a program.

Each picture in an animated gif takes up it's own space, so the more pictures you cycle through, the larger the file size. Also by keeping the colors to a minimum you can get smaller file sizes, thus getting larger pictures such as in this case.

In my signature block below you can see the simple animated gif I created. It's much smaller because it has more pictures being displayed, and more colors, so I had to keep the size smaller to keep it within the 35Kb DISboard limit for photos in signatures.

If you want to know more about putting photos into your post or into your signature, go to the DIS board Technical Support Forum and check out the FAQ's in the 'sticky' post you'll find there.

I gladly defer to Caskbill, newly-hired Tech Support moderator. While he may not have invented using external graphics in posts, he perfected it!
