This is so weird I can't even think of the right words to use:
I'm looking for information on plants that you put in a vase with water and there is a fish in the vase too. The fish lives off of the plants - sort of a biosphere type thing.
Anyone??

You could get one of those vases that you could put in a lucky bamboo plant in with a fighting fish. They sell the vases with the other flower vases at Wal-Mart. We have used them before and they work great.

Yup, it's called a Beta "fighting fish". I have one. It doesn't need a filter or a big tank.
Easy easy and pretty to look at. Just don't hold up a mirror to the tank (of course DSs had to try it) it will fight with its reflection in the mirror.

How do you feed the fish though with the roots from the bamboo all around?

You just put the food in the vase and the fish will go to the food. If you feel that there is to many roots for the fish to move around in, you can push down the roots to the bottom or cut some of them off.

Thanks for the info! I have to make a centerpiece to auction off for a benefit for Mercy Corp in a couple of weeks. I am trying to come up with something different than the usual flower centerpiece.
I think I'll post a question asking for ideas.

Lillies are beautiful as the flower in the vase. White flower with blue stones is my fav. Here's a link discussing the cons of a vase/betta arrangement. It's a Betta site so they are biased. Something to consider anyway:confused3

Deb: do you have that link? It didn't show in your post.
Thanks!

this may not be the link Debs was referring to but it does give info on caring for the beta.
