View Full Version : For Fun: Phrases your family now uses because of a trip to WDW

We've had so much fun at WDW over the years and part of the reason is because of the things that have been said or overheard that have now become a common part of my family's "vocabulary" and phraseology.
"Stand still you bunch of a@#*$%+s." That one came out of the mouth of my DGiL at MGM when she was trying to organize a family picture in front of IJ. :rotfl: Her own DS and three of her DGS were NOT cooperating.
Right after the movie American Pie came out we were at MGM on the RRC and I heard from the front of our car, "Suck me, Beautiful!!" in a very exhuberant voice. That has leaked into our family vernacular.
On the Disney Cruise, my father, mother, DW, DS and I were seated with another family of the same make-up. Their 4 year old DS was a picky eater and the only healthy food he would eat was "fajita-meat" (they were from Texas, would order steak and cut it into strips when it came, before he saw it was a steak). I can not tell you how many times we heard the phrase "fajita-meat" so that now, we always check the kids menu.
Nope, no fajita-meat, but plenty of mac and cheese, right.
Too many of my family phrases involve inappropriate language. What does that say about us? :sad2: :sad2: :sad2:
What are your family phrases?

And we HAVE to wait in it, one of us will say, "Let's FastPass" this.
Also, since eating at Whispering Canyon we say, "Mickey says, 'No bad words!'", whenever we hear someone swearing in public.
That's all that I can think of right now, but I know there are more!!

Aside from blatant references (ie calling Jamie Lee Curtis "Stupid Judy" every time we see her in something, or saying "stand clear of the closing doors" when I'm in my car), we do have a few that are unique to our family.
First, for some reason one day on the bus when I heard the driver say "Kindly give your seat to those in need of assistance", I said to my kids, "Forget that, if someone needs my seat I am not telling them kindly--I'll say "Sit down you Idiot". Now please don't be offended by that, I was in no way making light of anyone's disability. It was just a silly play on words. So now when we are about to sit down to dinner, or on most any occasion that calls for sitting, I tell my kids (or they tell me) Sit Down You Idiot! My daughter's friend was on that trip, so she's on it too, and if I know she's on the phone I'll usually yell that as I walk past.
That same trip I encountered some REALLY feisty kids at Ellen's Energy Adventure. While the movie was playing at the beginning a whole class of kids were roughhousing and being generally inappropriate. I didn't say anything the first 2 times a kids slammed into me, having been pushed while being rowdy with other kids. The third time I lost it and I said a little too loudly "You're not the only ones here you know!!" So that's our other line, generally spoken (quietly, as an aside) when we are out anywhere and there are kids behaving wildly.
And oh yeah--on Peter Pan we always rub our index finger on one hand over the index finger on the other towards a bad guy (to indicate shame, LOL) during any scenes with any of the pirates and entone "Shame, shame, everybody knows your name!". That got started when my kids were smaller, and we just kept it up in the spirit of silliness.
There are more but that's what comes to mind right now, and the ones we use most often. I think reading it here isn't as funny as it is when my kids and I are together and say it. I guess a lot of these are going to be injokes, or jokes that you "had to be there" to really enjoy fully. :cheer2: :sunny: :cool1: :) :goodvibes

:listen: My girls overheard a little boy saying this in the Magic Kingdom, and it has since become our newest phrase.

This is a little stupid...
I always point to the sign which indicates that you should remain seated while the ride is in motion and say, "Remember the sign!" And now, anytime I'm saying "Be safe" I have to say, "Remember the sign!" I took a picture so that everyone would remember the sign.
And whenever someone does something stupid in my family, we say that they did something like wear a hat on Splash Mountain. Because I was stupid enough to wear my hubby dub's favorite hat on Splash Mountain. (RIP SF49er's hat 2000-2004) My son even came up with an impression he happily performs anytime we're near a pool--he jumps into the deep end, then swims around shrieking, "Oh, no! My hat! I lost my hat!" :sad2:

Please stand clear of the doors......................
...we even add to that the Spanish announcement that comes afterward, especially on the monorail.
(Excuse my Spanish spelling here. I can say it, not write it. :goodvibes )
"Please stand clear of the doors....Por favor, mantenganse a los lados, de las puertas." I say this all the time to my son.

DH has taken to saying "How To, People" a la Steve Tyler in the preshow at RnRC (he lives near us and we've seen him around a few times so he feels like a kindred spirit to us). :umbrella:
We also have been teasing our kids with "Shay Shay" when they say something blatantly obvious or silly. Our tour guide in China at Epcot taught us that one which means Thank You. We also impressed our waiter last week at a Chinese Restaurant. :wizard:

In January we stayed in a 1-bedroom at OKW then switched to POP Century for the last two nights. Upon entering the room at POP my 5 year-old DS walked into the room and said "Hey, where is the living room!?"
We are now saying that anytime something is smaller than we think.

This is one of my family's favorites too. So when my DH found this website that had it, we had to play it over and over and over.
When you click on the link below, scroll or page down. It under the "Other" catagory.

We went into the Diamond Horseshoe for the new show and was saying "Hey Howdy Hey" for the rest of that trip.
We also make up games each year. Last year we passed many hours with "Name that Attaction/Show" One person would say a phrase from a ride or show and everyone else would guess the attraction/show. Such as "we wants the redhead"

I got this GREAT magnet a couple of trips ago. It's a miniature monrail, and when you push a little button on it it says (in the monorail voice) one of three things "Please stand clear of the closing doors" "Por favor mantegese alejadro de las puertas" (sp) and "Please Hold on to the Handrails". It's on my fridge, and I have it positioned on the freezer door so that when it opens the button on the magnet hits the wall and one of the phrases plays. Scares the bejeezus out of family and friends who visit and unwittingly set it off while looking for ice. LOL :rotfl: :goodvibes :flower:

Our new family phrase came from the shuttle ride from the cruise to VWL just last month. We were in one of those Meers shuttles with a family who spoke NO English (they were going to All Stars). Anyway, after 45 minutes of rapid spanish...we turned off the main road toward the All Stars to drop these people off and the little boy looks out the window and says....
BA BA BA BA BA I Luvin' It!
Can't understand a word they spoke until the kid sees McDonalds! It was too funny! Now....we've incorporated that into all sorts of things!
Great thread....

Oh wait! Got one more.
It's from a trip about 5 years ago when our now 10 yo was about 5. We walked into a room at the Poly (I think) and she looks around and says "Wow. We really must come here more often."
My DH and I say that ALL the time now when we find a cool hotel!

We went to DisneyWorld on our honeymoon in 1991. It was not my first trip, but it was my new bride's. She'd been a little hesitant, as she'd heard about the big crowds, and just didn't want a stress-filled honeymoon. I'd assured her we could avoid the stress.
First day, pulling into the park, beautiful day, windows down. There was a parking attendant ATTEMPTING to point the way for a car in front of us. The driver wasn't going to have any part of it. The attendant kept waving and pointing more and more demonstratively, and eventually the driver sticks his head out the window and yells at the top of his lungs, "WHY DON'T YOU JUST PULL OUT A GUN AND SHOOT ME FOR CHRIST'S SAKE?"
My wife's eyes get big, and she looks at me as if to say, "and THIS is what you call STRESS FREE?" :) Fortunately, all did go well the rest of the trip, and as a result we've been back multiple times, and are now DVC members.
Still, "...PULL OUT A GUN AND SHOOT ME..." is a part of our vocabulary now.

When we were at Animal Kingdom Lodge, my 3yo daughter started to call the balcony door the "animal door" and she thought the animals on the Savanah were in the back yard. She would ask every morning at sunrise, "Can I open the animal door and see the giraffes in our backyard?"
She still asks at home, but it's just not the same.
Also, while in Animal Kingdom, I saw a older women taking a picture of her grandchildren, and to get them to smile, she said, "Say Cheese, you sneaky Japanese"
My wife and I both looked at each other asking, did she just say what I thought she said? and have joked about the comment since, I don't use the phrase, nor endorse it's use, it just struck me an odd thing to say nowadays, but was probably a very common phrase 50 years ago.

OMG, I just choked when I read this. We have an 80 year old close family member who still sometimes uses phrases like this too! You are absolutely right, 50 years ago it was common. I find myself having to do "damage control" with my kids even though I've enlightened this person to the ways of today. Luckily I think my kids finally understand it but I shutter to think they'll repeat them. :scared1:

Although this is not my finest memory, dh and I like to jokingly tell each other when we're tired at home, that it's ok, 'cause today is free.

On the first trip with my family of 4 back in 1996, I was in high commando mode. :dancer: After an afternoon nap we made our way back from the All Stars to MGM Studios. I was driving our DS’s stroller like a madman saying “We gotta see the Muppets” as the rest of the family struggled to keep up. When I streaked towards the theater, I crashed, gashed my shin, and finally slowed down. Now whenever anyone gets in too big a hurry, the phrase “Gotta see the Muppets, Gotta see the Muppets” is said in hopes to calm/slow everyone down.
Peace,

This is a bit long but here goes:
Two years ago my wife and I took her 5 year old cousin to disney-- we stayed in carribean beach, and there was a commerical on the TV that played every 5 minutes-- It was for some knock off of the 'hooked on phonics' program. Anyway, they had testimonials of parents who used the product and saw improvement in their kids--
One woman, perhaps the biggest overactor in television history began to cry and said that she watched her son use the product and all she could say was "AUSTIN, Your'e a Reader!!"
For some reason, my wife's little cousin has not stopped saying that line-- We were just at a birthday party and instead of saying hello to us he merely walked up to us, and in the same whining- overacting voice used by the mother - he said "AUSTIN, Your'e a Reader!!" --
Now I wouldnt have put this story up here except I know that at least one of you knows what commercial I am talking about- I am sure of ths b/c the same commerical was playing on the disney hotel TV the last two times we visited!!! It still cracks me up...

When we were really little there used to be a very heavy Southern accent recorded for a lot of rides and things like "Whatch yer hed and mind yer step" which my four year old brother and I (5 at the time) delighted in saying incessantly - I'm sure it got on our parents nerves but being Canadians we thought it was funny. Then on one of the nights we spent in our villa my brother toddled over to the fridge and said "Naw what cin I heahve?" (translation Now what can I have?). My parents love the charming Southern accent and still say that to DB to tease him (he's 31 now).

We had an entertaining parking-lot tram announcer one night as we left the MK some time well after midnight. He was so funny! One of the things he did was intersperse his voice with that of the recording. The one that we repeat over and over again to this day was:
Him: And why do we tell you this?
Recording: ...for your own personal safety
I know it's not as funny just reading it. Guess ya had to be there. But DH and I WERE there, so now it's one of our many inside jokes.

A friend of ours is very funny and clever - and he always goes with us to keep adult/child ratio 1:1...
in his best announcer voice he says "The Shower of Terror" No soap, no washcloth... (Tower of Terror)
he wrote the Verandah rights - as opposed to Mirandah Rights...(see below)
after every ride that dumps out into a gift shop he and the kids fling their arms open wide and scream out "Merchandising!" as if they were in a desert and found water....
there's more, but i won't bore you....

My husband and I used to love the Wonders of Life's "Cranium Command" movie with the Saturday Night Live Guys... Hanz and Franz were very popluar when this attraction opened and to this day we refer to heads as "Craniums." If one of the kids whacks their head we'll say "Uh oh, cranium!" It's one of those stupid items of family folklore and the kids have no clue why we even say it!

And I've noticed that "Into infinity and beeeyond" finds it's way into otherwise normal conversations. (Seems to happen as the trip time gets closer)

New Years Eve 2002/2003, my wife and I and the couple we were traveling with were eating dinner at the Rose and Crown. We were seated next to a large group that was very noisey. One of them had an ear-piercing laugh, and would just not stop. I think they were all drunk. I finally reached my breaking point, pointed my imaginary remote control at the kackler and yelled 'MUTE!!! MUTE!!!'
The poor woman looked at me with her mouth wide open. :earseek:
I said 'Yes, you... MUUUUUUUUUUUUTE!!!'
They quieted down after that. Now, if the woman I muted is reading this - I humbly apologize. I was very tired, very cold, very wet, and very cranky.
Now, of course, I am asked to whip out my mute button whenever we are out together and someone is being too loud.

Back when DS was 11 and we were at one of the parks we mentioned possibly seeing someone from back home. Now mind you DS was a VERY talkative child at that time. He kept asking question, "where did you see him? what was he doing? what color hair did he have?" and on and on. Finally after about 5 minutes of solid questions I said "I DON'T KNOW AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT COLOR UNDERWARE HE HAD ON EITHER!" We the later part stuck. Now DS is 26 and no matter where we are or what we are talking about when anyone asks a question someone always comes up with "I don't know what color underware he had on either" and then we all kind of simle and think back to that day at Disney.

:teeth: I lost my favorite Baltimore Ravens hat (1998-2004) that I wore to the super bowl when the Ravens beat the New York "Football" Giants......went back up and asked a CM any chance I'll get it back, "We find 1000's of hats and donate them to charity". pirate:

Well over the last few years my family has become obsessed with the appliance direct commercials. If you have not seen them, they are hysterical. They are ususally on PAX and are about a half hour long. When they come on we sit and watch them in the room. Yes they are that funny. They are updated now, but one of their tag lines used to be Great Prices, YES! so whenever we would find a good sale we would say great prices yes.
Are there any other Sam the appliance man fans out there or are we the only weirdo's.
Just a short statement of how weird we are, I went down with friends this past summer and they were also amused. One of them made me an appliance direct screen tshirt from their web site as a gag gift.

These are too funny. We have the Spanish monorail sayings memorized too. Our funny family statement was discovered last year riding Its a Small World. At the very end of the ride where all the "Goodbye" signs are in different languages, there is a sign that says "SA-WAHT! DEE KRAHP" My mom saw it and started cracking up. She even took a picture of it and framed it for my DH for Christmas last year. So our new family comment is "Say what de Crap?" whenever something doesn't go our way. I did some research on the internet for the comment. It's some kind of greeting for a male in a language I don't remember now. I really was just curious to find out if it really was a true greeting, or just some Disney joke.

I love those commercials.
I drive my family crazy because I always have to watch Sam. My friends taped a bunch of the commercials for me to watch at home. Not quite the same as being there.
Here in CT we have Bob's discount furniture. Bob is just plain irritating, but Sam is cute.
My son is a Super Doppler nut. When he was younger and we drove into Orlando he saw the Super Doppler tower and kept repeating Super doppler, Super Doppler. Now (he is 21) we still joke with him as we pass Super Doppler. I drove to FL myself last year and called him on the phone as I passed his Super Doppler. Peggie

APPLIANCE DIRECT!!!!!
I love those commercials.
A couple of years back, there was a business called Family Auto Mart that had an outlet in Orlando. This business would purchase infomercial-length space and run a series of commercials late at night. My DH and I would watch those things after a long day in the parks and we couldn't stop laughing. The apparent owner of the Auto Mart would sing a song: Orlando, Orlando, Oh Oh Orlando. Orlando, Orlando, Fam-ly Au-to Mart." We still break into that stupid song sometimes at home and crack up, while those around us edge quietly and quickly away. This same "infomercial" would also feature little skits about buying cars. In one, the owner and several other staffers would dress up in hill-billy-type clothing and do a quiz show called "Fixin' to Learn Ya.'" So naturally, anytime we hear of some major "duh" news in education, we look at each other and say "fixin' to learn ya.'"
Ah, the joys of local TV commercials...

My 11 year old nephew finally was allowed to join us on our annual Disney pilgramage. He waited for years to get parental approval.....When we finally had him on Main Street, my brother asked, him what do you think? My nephew responded, "Oh Uncle, my fun meter will never be the same again!" It became our trip motto! We think Disney should make shirts with that saying on it!
He also was quite scared of the Tower of Terror. When everyone tried to explain that it is just pretend, he said "Well someday it may become real, and I will not be in here for it!"
 :bounce:
Two lines from Snow White made it into our fams vocab, both from Doc:
"What are ya and who ya doing..."
or when we get home in the evening and someone (me) left a light on..."The lits lamp."
From the parks, its generally versions of ride safety like:
"Stay seated at all times" or "Keep your arms and legs in the vehicle"
And for that time when you are in a hurry and you run into someone who wants to chat I can hear my kids whistling or humming..."How do you do, mighty fine to meet ya, gotta be moving along...'
And finally about a week after any trip someone is usually saying. "Lets go Home again"

I don't think they say this anymore, but I remember something to the extent of, "please collect your belongings and take small children by the hand..." as you were exiting some of the rides. I say this all the time when we are getting out of the car, or trying to gather our things when leaving a restaurant, etc. DH just rolls his eyes, but the kids still laugh when I say it!
Also, DH usually butchers the names of things, so we have lots of funny names that have now become "normal" for us:
Cosmic Rays = Comic Rays
Pecos Bills = Peso Bill
Ghiradelli = Geraldi's (hard "g" sound, like "good")
Ohana = Moohanie's (moo-HA-nees)
The last one is our absolute favorite and can send us into fits of giggles when we talk about going to "Moohanie's" for dinner!! I have no idea how he comes up with this stuff, but it keeps us in stitches!

on our most recent trip in january, every time someone said 'boat' i would do my dory schtick 'boat? i saw a boat! it went this way follow me!'
we are also big fans of por favor mantengense alejado de las puertas' and have the talking magnet.
on our first trip together in september 2001 the 'green army men' were in the parking lot of mgm for ee day. they were at the trams telling people to remember where they parked and yelling into the bullhorns 'you are parked in aisle 44 soldier'. yes i still remember the aisle. now whenever one of asks 'where did we park' we inevitably say 'you are parked in aisle 44!'

On our first trip to Animal Kingdom we had a cranky tram driver on the way back to the parking lot at closing. He was giving the directions about seating children towards the center... there was one family that just wasn't listening, or couldn't understand him or whatever. Finally he just broke and said, "Children in the center, adults on the ends. ITS NOT THAT HARD PEOPLE!!!" At which point my MIL looked at me and we started cracking up. Now whenever we are trying to explain something to someone and they just aren't getting it we say, "children in the middle, it's not that hard people!"
Ah, maybe you had to be there. LOL. :rotfl:

Our friend butchers names intentionally too - - Sploosh Montaigne is his favorite - I think it happened the day he woke up "wis a bah fransh assent"
