View Full Version : Lani's Training Journal
Hi all;
I don't know how carefully I'll track my food intake, but I need to have a way to track my exercises in a way that I can use a freestyle form with the ability to add comments.
Since I went on the Disney Magic cruise last October, I've gained a few pounds after working hard to lose them on a low-carb diet last year.
I'm back to a regular routine at home (after a hectic four months of lots of travel), so I'm going to really kick exercise up a few notches over what I've been doing, and I'll start watching what I eat, too.
Comments and questions are welcome. I currently run 5 times a week, and I'll be going back to resistance training again (2-3 times a year) and I'll see if I can squeeze in spinning (stationary bike class) once or twice a year.
...and I'll be going back to resistance training again (2-3 times a year) and I'll see if I can squeeze in spinning (stationary bike class) once or twice a year.Oh DUH. I meant "times a WEEK." Well OF COURSE I can manage to do that a few times a year! d'oh!! http://mousepad.mouseplanet.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Welcome Lani!
Here, I thought you had some new age thinking about exercise and you did your resistance training in cycles, starting a new cycle 2 or 3 times a year. And doing a spinning class once a year? That would be me! Do they make the seats so uncomfortable so that you HAVE to stand??
WELCOME!! Glad to have you here!!Thanks pettyone. Now I'll have to get in the habit of LOGGING my entries! I get bad about that. :earboy2:
Welcome Lani!
...Do they make the seats so uncomfortable so that you HAVE to stand??Thanks for the welcome, geetey. I don't have to look too hard. The spinning bicycle seats are pretty tough and I have to use one of those removable gel pads or else I get a really sore behind!!

Welcome Lani! :wave2: As someone who is desperately trying to get in a groove of exercising I am looking forward to your journals. I have a goal of running a 5K this year so I have to get moving and reading people's successes really motivate me! Keep up the great work. :)
All it takes is patience, persistence, and dedication!! :D No, relaly. You just take it one day at a time. And when you slip a day or a week, don't let that derail you altogether. Just dust off your sneakers and start the very next day! :)
I'm still experiencing jetlag, and ended up getting up too late to work out yesterday morning. That's OK; I'm a bit sore from the Wednesday weight lifting (I'm rusty!).
6:45 a.m.: Cardio

HI Lani! I'm Jen!!!! I just wanted to say Welcome! :wave2: You sound like one lean, mean , exercizing machine!!! Way to go! :cool1:
You sound like one lean, mean , exercizing machine!!!Thanks for the welcome, Jen... I am DEFINITELY not lean!! LOL!! I've NEVER been lean. I've always ranged from chubby to stocky to out of shape and fat! Even now I'm stocky. I don't think I'll ever be lean. For one thing, my shoulders and ribs are too wide, I think.
Thanks for your words of encouragement, Alysa! :)
I usually take weekends off, so I didn't work out at all weekend. Instead, I went to the movie theater and saw "The Aviator," and ate buttered popcorn!! Naughty me!! It's one of my naughty sins, I tell you. But I don't eat popcorn (buttered or otherwise) at all outside of the theater. That's my one rule.
I've also discovered that many theaters sell a kid's pack -- junior popcorn and small soda for a very reasonable price, like $5.00. Much better than a big tub!

65 min. treadmill (including warm-up and cool-down). Distance: 6.5 miles.

60 min. PowerSculpt class. I increased the weights, although I'm still not up to what I was doing six months ago. I'm still catching up, after WDW vacations, Disney cruise, all kinds of other distractions. It was really really tough! I'm glad I went to class; it pushes me to do more than I would do on my own.

Oh my goodness, I am wiped out! It was REALLY tough to get going this morning. I am still not used to two workouts a day, and the next day I can REALLY tell. I need to get more sleep and drink more water.
My morning breakfast was a typical Atkins meal: two over-easy eggs, two sausages (with a ton of Tabasco), with a cup of decaf coffee with two tbsp half/half and 3 packets of Splenda.
I don't know what I'll have for lunch yet, but I bought some fresh fruit down at the cafeteria (a half a cup of sliced strawberries and grapes) so I'll either have it with cottage cheese or a Splenda-sweetened yogurt for a snack or as part of lunch. I also grabbed some peanut butter to go with my Granny Smith apple, but I don't know when I'll eat that, either.
Last night, hubby cooked a delicious dinner of baked salmon. Yum!
Tonight was leftovers night. I had a smallish piece of turkey meatloaf, and a chicken drumstick (cooked in a slow cooker).
Then hubby and I went to see "Hotel Rwanda (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0395169/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxzZz0xfGxtPTIwMHx0dD1vbnxmYj 11fHBuPTB8cT1ob3RlbCByd2FuZGF8aHRtbD0xfG5tPW9u;fc= 1;ft=20)" at the movie theater. What does this mean? Popcorn!! Popcorn was yummy.
Movie was incredibly powerful. So intense. I thought Clint Eastwood was really good in "Million Dollar Baby," but I hope Don Cheadle gets the Best Actor Oscar. He was SO good in this movie.
It's 10:45pm. I should go to sleep soon so I can have enough rest. I'll try for the two workouts tomorrow! (run in the morning, PowerSculpt after work).

You are so good drinking decaf!!!! I have to have my one cup of high test daily!!!
As for the lean thing, I think we are all headed to be lean!!! :cool1: :rotfl: I too have never been lean, but I sure am more lean than 3 1/2 years ago!!!
BTW... I LOVE SALMON! Want to send me some! :sunny:
You are so good drinking decaf!!!! I have to have my one cup of high test daily!!!sarahsmom -- It took me a while to wean off of regular coffee. Actually, it was tough to wean off of the yummy Starbucks mocha stuff! LOL. But when I went on Atkins, I switched to decaf, and the one indulgence was being able to add two tablespoons of cream or half and half to my mug of decaf. It made the switch tolerable.
BTW, I slept in late again and woke up at 7:30 when I needed to be out of the house by 6. That meant no morning gym workout for me. Hopefully I'll go run this afternoon. :sad2:
Yay! I managed to work out today.
Cardio: 5 miles on the treadmill at 6mph.
Then I treated myself and got a full hour-long massage at the fitness center at work. Ahhhh.... it was heavenly!! :)

I am so jealous!!! I love massages!!!! I thinkI'll suggest to our School district's wellness committee we need to add that feature!! Do you know what they would say?! :rotfl2:
Great job on the treadmill! You sure have me whipped! I am only doing 4 miles at 4.7 - 5 right now!!! You have definitely just given me something to work towards!!! :cheer2:
Have an awesome day! :sunny:

You just take it one day at a time, and periodically do speed workouts to increase your pace. There are different ways to do speed workouts, and it doesn't matter what your normal pace is. Just try pushing your pace for say 30 seconds, and then slowing down for a few minutes, then push your pace another 30 seconds, and so on. It will help your body become accustomed to the sensation of going faster.
When I first got back into jogging (or "woggling," as I call it) in October 2001, 5mph would have been lightning fast! I think I started at 4.5mph. That was so disappointing to me, because I finished the 1992 Honolulu Marathon at 4:41:11, which was for me a blistering pace (it was even faster than what I'd be able to do now, since there were a good two miles there where I walked, so I know I ran faster the rest of the course). But I had gotten terribly out of shape and gained a ton of weight (in all honesty, I gained almost 70 pounds!!!). I'm still not down to that spritely weight, but I'm also older, and I'm taking my time.
1 hour on the treadmill for a 10K. Goal for today was making sure I could do a 10K in under a minute. I made it with about 20 seconds to spare. yay!
Went down to Disneyland over the weekend for some MousePlanet work. I was REALLY REALLY NAUGHTY and bought myself a box of "Hunny Caramel Popcorn" in Critter Country. It smelled SOOOO good. OMG, it was so yummy. Even better than regular caramel corn, since it was lighter and didn't have that smoky smell. Chewy goodness. I have sinned!!

I think there were many of us who "sinned" this weekend!!!!
Thanks so much for keeping me motivated... I really am starting to love running. It is a part of the day I am looking forward to! :cool1: I love the runners high!
Boy, I wish my job made me go to Disney!!! When I retire.... In about 30 years since NYS says I have to go until at least 2028 and then I woun't be old enough...... :earsgirl:
Absolution could be yours...just tell us all that IT WASN'T WORTH IT!!!Oh um... yeah. "IT WASN'T WORTH IT!!"
[Does lying count as a sin?!?!?] ;)

Boy, I wish my job made me go to Disney!!!I think the more you get into the habit of running/jogging, the easier it gets. I like to think so, anyway.
As for "my job," MousePlanet isn't my day job. For that I have another one that actually pays the bills. :D
After work PowerSculpt class.
I'm starting to get back into the routine, so it's not quite so tough as it was last week. I'm still pretty tired afterwards, though.
I got home, and dh had made a wonderful dinner for us for Valentine's Day! Crab-stuffed salmon filet and a cauliflower casserole, with fresh fruit and whipped cream (sweetened with Splenda) for dinner. It was wonderful!

One hour on the elliptical machine this morning. My left heel has been bothering me (I suspect it's plantar fasciitus) so I thought I'd take it easy today.

I don't think it is a sin if it was worth it. The sin is when you waste a splurge on something that is just so so. (Or as my mom will say "It's not worth the calories)

Morning cardio: 6 miles on the treadmill (60 minutes) plus warm-up/cool-down, and stretching
After work: PowerSculpt resistance training class (60 minutes)
Breakfast: Low-carb strive bar and a can of Vienna sausage (don't ask; it's low in carbs).
Lunch: Big spinach salad with chicken, mushrooms, broccoli, green/red peppers, beet slices, tofu cubes, and Asian sesame dressing (which I know has sugar in it, but it's soooo yummy).
Turned away chocolate cake and ice cream at a co-worker's 15th employment anniversary party at 3 p.m.. I was good. Yay! (not worth the cheat... not like that yummy Disneyland hunny caramel popcorn, nosiree!)
Afternoon snack: 1 more Strive bar (because it was in my bag) after my PowerSculpt class because I was starving, a small handful of cashews nuts.
Dinner: Grilled salmon filet, leftover cauliflower casserole, with an ice cold tall glass of water. Yummm.
Forgot to eat any fruit today. :(

Great job on the exercize, Lani!!! That's awesome!
Vienna Sausages , huh?! :earseek:
Have a great day!
No morning workout.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
After work workout: 48 minutes for 5 miles, plus warm-up/cool-down walk, total 1 hour. Sports Stretch class right after the run, half an hour. Stretttttch!!! Ooomph, I feel so tight. I got to the classroom sweating up a storm since I'd just finished running. I changed shirts, and I immediately got a web print from my bra! (I sweat when I run). Then I'm trying to bend over while stretching, and sweat is dripping off my forehead onto the floor. I put a little towel on the floor so I wouldn't slip! LOL.
Breakfast: Strive bar
Lunch: Catered meeting: they served sandwiches and pasta salad. Ouch! I grabbed a big sandwich then tossed the bread out and ate turkey slices and veggies. Picked out broccoli from the pasta salad, managed not to eat any pasta. Woot!
Dinner: DH made some awesome mini-quiches in muffin tins for dinner. Mmmmm. It tasted great, and it was full of healthy stuff like grated carrots and onions. By making them in muffin tins, the middle was all done and didn't taste mushy.

Go Lani! :cheer2: Your exercize certanly puts mine to shame! :cool1:
I had a day off from work. But I didn't feel right taking a day off from exercise. Since I didn't want to drive to work just to use its gym facilities, I ran around the lake near my apartment. It's a 3.1-mile loop, and when I first started "jogging" again a few years ago, it used to take me around 47 minutes to complete it. Yesterday, I ran it in 30:49. Woo woo! It was a shorter distance than my practice runs now, so I tried to go for speed.
We went bowling after that, and I have come to realize my repetitive stress on my wrist from work makes it very difficult to bowl. I should've found a ball with a bigger thumb hole, too, but oh well.
My heels are NOT happy now, though. I ran on the sidewalk, which was cement. It's the worst surface you can run on, and I really need new shoes and new insoles. My heels were protesting pretty hard. Worse, I know I've had plantar fasciitus on my left heel for a few weeks, but my right heel was also complaining. :(
When I went to bed, I wore a splint on my left foot to keep the calf and heel stretched (plantar fasciitus, which causes heel pain, is often the result of not stretching one's calves well. The calf muscles pull up, pulling the heel with it, and the plantar fascia that's in the heel area. THAT's what causes the pain. So healing plantar fasciitus means lots of calf stretches.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Tuesday, February 22, 2005
The splint seemed to have helped a little. My heel didn't hurt when I got up out of bed. But it still hurt when I tried to run this morning. It meant I had to run really light on my heels, which actually changes my posture. It turns more into a real running posture than a jogging posture. The up side of that is that I could run faster. But I need to heal these heels.
65 minutes (including warm-up and cool-down walking), consisting of 10k (6.2 miles) in 60 minutes. 5 minute stretch before, and 10 min after. LOTS of calf stretches. *sigh*
sarahsmom73
02-23-2005, 06:15 AM
Sorry about your heels! That is the pits! Hope they feel better soon!
Congrats on the running though! I hope I will be able to do 10k in that time frame! Thanks for the inspiration! :flower:
sarahsmom -- thanks for your well wishes. I wore the splint for the second night last night, and it seems to be making a huge difference! Yay! :)

OK, this may be TMI but I'm no longer bloated. ;)
And when I'm not bloated, my ... "bouncy bits" don't hurt compressed in my bra so much, so jogging is a much more pleasant experience.
Today, I decided to try to kick it up a notch (thanks to not feeling so bloated, and having worn the split last night again, my left heel seems to be feeling less pain).
I ran 6.2 miles (a 10K) at 58:11. So I was able to run six miles in just short of 57 minutes. Woo hoo!
Today, I will not be going to the PowerSculpt class. Our instructor hurt her back and had to go to the doctor's. Hope she's OK.
OK, so I think I went overboard last night. I thought wearing the splint all night would make it heal even faster, so I was walking around the house with that thing on my foot.
I got up this morning and I thought I was OK, but running on the treadmill was very very tough on my left heel. I don't know that "pain" is the right word -- it was very tight.
So I switched and did the elliptical for 50 minutes. Still worked up a good sweat, but my heart rate never went above 130 (when I run it's around 150). Oh well, hopefully tomorrow I'll feel less tight!

All I can say is OUCH!! I'm having flashbacks and sympathy pains...PF is NO FUN!!
I finally faced the fact that part of the problem with my plantar fasciitus is a result of my needing new shoes. I've rotated through four pairs all of last year, which was great (in the past I've rotated through two pairs but have had to replace them every 5 or 6 months), but I could tell I wasn't really getting much support from them anymore.
Popped into a Sportmart last night hoping to buy a pair of Saucony Grid Aura TR5s, as three of last year's pairs were of that model. Unfortunately, Saucony upgraded its model to TR6, and in the process, changed the design so it doesn't fit my feet well anymore (it's too wide in the ankle). Which is too bad; their TR6 was on sale for only $39.99.
Another pair that really fits me well is the Asics Gel Kayano. I tried on a pair of Gel Kayano XIs, and they were like heaven on my feet. Bliss!
Unfortunately, they were priced at $134.99, way too much for one pair of shoes (considering I'd eventually want to have another pair or two to rotate with).
Instead, I got a pair of Asics GT-2100. Not bad. Nice and snug around the heel and midsection, but with a very roomy toebox, at only $89. "Only" -- pshaw. Oh well. I later found out it was roomy because I bought a wide width shoe (D) but I think a B would be OK on my feet, too, esp. after I break it in.
So this morning, I ran 6 miles on the treadmill at 57:11. And stretched my calves. Tonight hopefully I'll have time to go to the weight lifting and abs class.

Oh! I want to try those gel shoes!!! I know, I Know! They are expensive.. But I am due to get new shoes and those sound AWESOME!!!!! :cool1:
Awesome work out!!!! I am hoping to reach 6 miles next week!!!! I have that 10K goal in my sights and I will make it!
What's on the menu for the weekend?
How's the weather? I saw CA was getting hammered with rain again! :sad2: We are supposed to get nailed by a HUGE snowstorm Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday! OH JOY! The last time they talked like this we got 40 inches!
Have an AWESOME Weekend! (Going to Disneyland?)
Well, hubby had to go out of town for the weekend. In his absence, I attended my gym manager's birthday party on Saturday night. They had it at a winery -- apparently the wine was very good but what do I know, I don't drink. It was a catered affair that included some grilled veggies, sushi, cheeses, various other heavy appetizers. Very yummy.
There were about two dozen folks at the party, and it turns out most of them work at my company (I work out at the company fitness center), but there were quite a few I didn't know because they work out at different times of the day.
It was really neat to see folks I know from the gym, though, wearing nice clothes! I usually see them in ratty gym outfits, but they were all dressed in nice suits and cocktail dresses. Everyone looked nice because they all work out at the gym. :)
On Sunday, I baked a big batch of buffalo wings for myself and that was mostly what I noshed on all day, with some salad and stuff on the side. I was so lazy!
It was a weekend and I'm not training for anything specific yet, so no workouts.
6 miles in the morning
PowerSculpt weight lifting class after work.
I'm sleepy and it's only 7:35! I think I need some food in my system. I had a big salad for lunch (with chicken) but I had no snack in the afternoon and went right to my workout. Hubby's cooking dinner (so sweet!) so I'll be munching soon. Nothing fancy -- just chicken chow mein from Trader Joe's, and he's adding lots of veggies to it since I'll be eating very little of the noodles.

Did you make it to the gym?!
Did you make it to the gym?! I did, I did!!
I jogged on the dreadmill for 30 minutes (3 miles), but I kept having problems with my headphones. I had one of those that clipped behind the ear, but it was getting old and the spring didn't really work anymore on the right one, so as soon as I'd start to sweat the right earclip would jostle itself off.
So I'd bought a cheapie pair of KOSS headphones that wrap around the back of the head. But it was a very poor design and the phones would be angled wrong so that I couldn't hear it very well in the left ear, but it would hurt my right ear!
So between the two sets of phones I kept fidgeting. Just then, some of my gymmates reminded me about the spinning class that was happening, so I cut my run short and joined them for an hour of spin class.
Whew! Those things wipe me out! And this morning I'm walking like John Wayne.
Howdy, podner! :cool1:

Yippe I Yo Kai yeah!~ :cheer2:
Second workout of the day: Powersculpt class after work for an hour of resistance training. yay.
Thursday, March 3, 2005
A truly dreadful hour on the treadmill this morning. I felt tight, and I just couldn't get into it, so I kept "taking a water sip break" every 5 to 10 minutes, causing me to take a total of 115 minutes to do what should normally only take an hour. I DID manage the distance, but boy, it sucked. Gaaaa.
I'll go to the half-hour sports stretch class after work today to work out all this stiffness.
sarahsmom73

You are SOOO good!! :)
Oh my goodness, I've been BAD! I've been real busy and haven't had a chance to check in, so I'm catching up on my log!!
Thursday afternoon, March 3, 2005
I went to Sports Stretch for a half an hour after work. Ohhhh that is SOOOO good. Not quite as good as a massage, but it's awesome to spend that long just stretching!
Friday, March 4, 2005
Morning: Speed workout on the treadmill, total 5 miles. 1 mile warm-up, then 220s (that's half a lap around the track) of exceedingly faster pace, then walk/slow jog for the rest of the lap, for a total of 4 miles altogether (16 laps). I did eventually get up to 9 miles per hour, which is something like a 7:30 pace. Whoooo!! I was worried I would trip!
After work: Half an hour of upper-body resistance training class, then half an hour of the Abs and Back class. Not quite the same as the PowerSculpt class, but pretty good. It allows me to lift weights three times a week.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
I took Saturday and Sunday off. Mostly, my 5-year-old iMac started kicking the bucket, and since we were planning on upgrading it soon anyway, we went out and got a Powerbook G4. We really needed a laptop for portability purposes. So I got it a few months ahead of plans, but I'm not complaining. The thing works... and so much faster, too! Yay.

Morning: 6 miles on the treadmill.
After work: 1 hour PowerSculpt class.
Tuesday, March 8, 2005
I stayed up too late last night, so I slept in. Plenty of time to get to work (early, in fact), but too late for a workout. No morning workout today.
After work: 1 hour spinning (stationary bike) class. It whopped my butt!! KILLER!
Wednesday, March 9, 2005
Morning: 3 miles on the treadmill... but the spin class the night before is definitely making itself felt. My legs, buttocks, everything--tired! So after 3 miles, I went and did 30 minutes on the elliptical. THAT finally got the endorphins working (the Ibuprofen I took helped, too!), so I was able to go back on the treadmill for 15 minutes of combined speed work and walking/slow jogging. So it turned into a loooong workout of 75 minutes.
I will likely go to the PowerSculpt class this evening. [I've discovered that I like the scenery in there! Tee hee! OK OK, just 'cause I'm married doesn't mean I can't look at the menu. Shaddup!! hahahahaha. :rolleyes1 :rotfl2: ]

Dropping in to say Hi and miss ya!!! :wave2:
Just wanted to pop in to let everyone know I'm still here. I haven't croaked!
I have been superbusy moving apartments. We are just about done, but it's been a REAL hectic month!!
I am experiencing plantar fasciitis on my left foot -- a heel spur. I'm actively trying to heal it, which means I've cut way back on my running. Instead, I've been doing the elliptical. Not quite the same but I still have to burn those calories.
I ran on the treadmill today just to make sure I still could after two weeks of no running. I can still run, and I did four miles, but now my left foot is scolding me. Boo.
OK, I'll be back again but probably not right away. I'll try to post a long catch-up post with my workouts when I have the time. :)

I have been reading mouse planet like a maniac as DD and I are headed to WDW for a spur of the moment trip next week!!! (We got $49 fares each way! How could I resist!) You do great work!

Hi Lani! I'm another ex-Islander with a Disney addiction trying to get back into the program. Keep up the great work! You're inspiring a lot of us!
