What is Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa?
Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa is Disney’s Flagship Resort Hotel, located on the white-sand shores of the Seven Seas Lagoon at Walt Disney World.

I heard that the resort is under refurbishment. Is that true?
The entire hotel recently went through a major two year remodel, which finished on December 23, 2000. All guestrooms and suites in the hotel were redone, and all of the public areas got a face-lift. A new theme pool with slide opened in June of 2001, and the courtyard pool has become the resort’s quiet pool. The quiet pool will be refurbished starting in September 2001, and will reopen before the year’s end.

Wine pairings may be ordered to accompany your appetizers, entrée and dessert. Off of the dining room is a private dining area known as the Chef's Domain that is available and can accommodate up to 14 guests. Here you may order off the menu or allow the Chef to satisfy your appetite with his special creations. Wine pairings are available here as well and Citricos has a number of qualified sommeliers on staff. A minimum food and beverage amount is required to book here.

At 1900 Park Fare, 15 feet above the floor, you'll find Big Bertha. This Parisian-built band organ is almost a century old. It will periodically spring to life for your listening pleasure, with pipes, drums, bells, cymbals and a xylophone, lending a festive air to the Character meals offered here. Breakfast, served from 7:30AM to 11:30AM, features an all-you-can-eat buffet, with fresh fruit, bagels, oatmeal, yogurt, eggs, bacon, sausage, cheese blintzes, omelets, fried potatoes, cold cereals, biscuits and gravy, French toast, waffles, pancakes and baked goods. Guests may reserve the Chef's Table here, where the Chef personally welcomes you into his kitchen, introduces you to the other cooks, and seats you in a special area in an alcove at the rear of his kitchen. A bottle of champagne is served and a toast offered to the guests. Guests may wander about the kitchen, talk to the chefs, ask questions and take pictures, as long as they don't interfere with the actual cooking and serving. The Chef will go over each course and its ingredients with guests. Appetizers, sorbet, portions of each of the evening's entrees, wine and cheeses, portions of the evening's desserts, coffee or tea and chocolate truffles are served to please the palate. As a delightful finishing touch, the ladies are presented with a long stem rose. Menus are autographed by the kitchen staff and given to guests as a memento. What do guests have to say about the Grand Floridian?

DISer scanne says:
My first deluxe resort was the Grand Floridian. I was so moved when I stepped into our room that I almost cried. We had the most perfect view of Cinderella Castle! The feeling I got was beyond words. I will always have a special place in my heart for the Grand Floridian because it is a truly magical resort!

DISer Disney Fool says:
What's not to like? The magnificent floral arrangements in the lobbies, the maids walking to on the grounds in their peach uniforms with peach parasols, the complimentary bathrobs, the friendly staff, the good night notes, all make for a wonderful stay. Spoiled? You bet I am! Just walking around this place is a treat. For everyone who thinks the GF is too stuffy for kids, boy, you you mistaken! The kids who go there know better, I've yet to see an unhappy child there. The whole atmosphere envelops you and you are somehow transported back to the days of Pollyanna and the charming turn of the century mentality. And in the early morning you really can hear the WDW Train whistle.

DISer CatOne says:
The Grand....why stay anywhere else?

DISer princess angel says:
The first time I saw the Grand Floridian was from the MK ferry boat in 1997, my jaw dropped to the ground! needless to say, we planned our honeymoon at the GF for 1998! my first step into the lobby and I was completely breathless!!! It was the most amaing feeling I ever had! That "magic" stayed with us for our entire honeymoon, and also during our next three trips there.
the GF is very special to myself and my dh, and it will always be our favorite, and most "magical" resort in the "world" both disney, and the rest of the world too!!! nothing can beat that feeling of the GF for us!!!
It is luxorious, elegant, breathtaking, and truly whisks you away into victorian enchantment!!

DISer ead79 says:
The Grand Floridian is one of the most magical places on Disney property for me. When I walked in to the gorgeous lobby, the words to "When You Wish Upon a Star" just jumped into my mind. Staying there was truly a dream come true for me, and the Grand Floridian is my absolute favorite resort.

DISer officer tigger says:
My honeymoon was my first trip back to WDW in almost 15 years. Upon entering the lobby itself was amazing. When we arrived the band was playing and it set the mood for a wonderful week.
We stayed in a honeymoon turret room. I believe the room number was 4221.

I remember the concierge staff walking us into the room for the first time. In one word to describe the room and view "breathtaking". From one side of the room we could see the castle, and from the other, the wedding pavilion. There was a huge balcony next to our room. No one ever used it except for us. Eachg night we would get something from the concierge level, and enjoy the night on the balcony.

I loved the way staff would greet us each morning by name. That made us feel very special.

It doesn't matter were else in Disney we stay, the GF will always be our "home" resort.

DISer MAKmom says:
Staying at the Grand Floridian is like being in the movie Hello Dolly.

DISer skuttle says:
DH and I couldn't have picked a better resort for our honeymoon!! The GF is absolutely amazing!! Everything about the resort is wonderful. The atmosphere, the CM's, the restaurants...everything is perfect! The GF will always hold a special place in my heart.

You know, this GF FAQ takes up 17 pages in a Microsoft Word Document. (and, none of the pictures show up in it, it's all html code - so basicly just text). :)

Hey Cali-D!!! Only FIVE MORE DAYS till we leave! Of course that will be EIGHT MORE DAYS till I'm actually at the GF! (Can't forget about the stay at the Poly first!) I've actually decided, and have NOT changed my mind, on the Sugar Loaf concierge! I can't wait! I know there are no two-balcony end rooms in the Sugar Loaf Bldg...but is there one floor that's better than the other? We have 5 people, so a dormer room is out. Are there any lodge tower rooms in Sugar Loaf? (I know you have to book that type of room, but I was just curious.) I am SO ready for this vacation that I want it to be GREAT!

Any info on a really great floor or view (I requested pool view, but I'm not above changing it, if necessary!) would be extremely appreciated!

Ruth (who's been through TOOOO much this summer and is ready for some FUN!!!) :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Actually, Lodge Towers in Sugar Loaf are in the Lodge Concierge category, not a seperate one. They only sleep 4, with 2 Queen Beds. Rooms 6101 and 6102 (first floor) & 6201 and 6202 (second floor) are good choices. They are all on the end, so the one side of the balcony is open, so you have 2 views (one of the main building, and the rooms that end in 1 have a marina view, the ones that end in 2 have a pool view). It would be nice if Sugar Loaf had a corner room, but they don't. :(

Have a wonderful time! You'll be writing a GF Sugar Loaf report for the FAQ, right? I sure hope so! :)

Thanks,
Cali

Cali--Gosh darn it! I keep forgetting the Lodge Tower rooms only sleep 4!! Are the room numbers you quoted (6101, 6102, 6201, 6202) Lodge Tower rooms? Or just rooms with good views?

If at all possible, I will try to take good notes of what food offerings the Sugar Loaf has! I know that is one thing that kept making me NOT want to do it...I was worried it won't be worth the extra $$...but hey...you only live once! (Hopefully I'll be able to live here again someday!) I'm sure I'll be taking LOTS of pictures...as soon as I can get this STUPID laptop to recognize that my camera is attached! (Anyone have any experience with IBM X20's, Windows98 and Casio cameras???)

I can't wait! (Theoretically it's only FOUR days because I have to be packed and have the car loaded to go to the airport the night before because our flight leaves at 7:30 am!!)

The room numbers above are rooms that I personally think would be good rooms. I'd be the happiest with 6202 (pool view, regular room). But, really any of those rooms are great (and, every other room in Sugar Loaf, too. I'd just prefer to be on that end (where the 01 and 02 rooms are at). :) If you get 6101 or 6102, you'd be on the same level as the lounge, and be beside a door to outside (the second floor rooms are beside the outside stairs as well).

Hi! Somoking rooms are located on the fourth and fifth floor of Big Pine Key (most are dormer rooms) and the fourth and fifth floor of Sago Cay (most are dormer rooms). In Big Pine Key, you'd have a pool view, and in Sago Cay you'd either have a marina view or a monorail/garden view. :) 2/3 of the smoking rooms are located in Sago Cay (1/3 with each view), and 1/3 of them are in Big Pine Key. :)

CaliforniaDreaming, is the only difference between the lodge concierage an tower concierage that there is no alcolhol serve in the lodge? I wonder why they deleted alcohol in the lodge anyway. It's not a biggie but it seems odd. I also read that the GF restaurant chefs will be making some food items on certain dayhs for concierage, but is this only for the tower? Lastly, how did you think the poly compared to the GF? Did you do concierage there too? Thanks again, Carolyn

CaliforniaDreaming
08-04-2001, 07:04 PM
The Main Building Concierge starts at $555 per night, and Sugar Loaf Concierge starts at $445 per night. They both serve basicly the same thing (see the menu on the 1st page), but Sugar Loaf just doesn't have the wine and cordials.

The Polynesian's concierge does serve more food around dinnertime, and has alcohol; while in the afternoon there is more food at the GF (taco salads, mini sandwiches, etc) (Poly serves candy and cookies). We stayed at the Poly about a year ago, and found the concierge staff and housekeeping to be poor; though the food offerings in the lounge (as well as the lounge staff) was great. :)

Dollar for dollar, you will find more value in the Poly's Concierge, or the GF's Sugar Loaf Concierge. :) But, some people find the experience of being "in" the main building to be worth the extra at the GF. :)

In only 34 SHORT hours we'll be leaving for WDW...and in only FIVE SHORT DAYS I'll be checking in at the Grand!! I haven't made any special room requests...just pool view from the Sugar Loaf Bldg...so let that pixie dust FLY!!! And if, by chance, I receive tons of pixie dust when we're at the Polynesian, I'll let you all slide on the pixie dust sprinkling for the Grand...although that would make the trip TWICE as nice!

I don't mean to slight the Polynesian...and I'm sure I'll LOVE our stay there...but the Grand Floridian is my DREAM! I can't wait...Sugar Loaf Concierge here we come!

CaliforniaDreaming and All, I looked at your info on the concierage in the lodge. I'm still wondering though if except for liquor the lodge concierage is exactly the same as the Royal Palm Club. This new idea about chefs too coming from the GF restraurants to make a dish from Tuesday thru Friday (?), is that just for the Royal Palm? Once you have concierage (we did at the Poly), it is hard not to have it again. However, another good thing about the GF is that they gave us a microwave, refrigerator, and coffee maker for no charge so we could still have some quick conveniences with the kids. Any thoughts? Thanks, Carolyn :pinkbounc :pinkbounc

Cali-D....

Just got off the phone with Central reservations.... we can upgrade to lagoon view for an extra $45 a night, is it worth it??

Also, how do I get a lodge tower room with the pool view or marina view?? Do they cost more than GV?? Or can I just request it??

Are the corner rooms a lot bigger than the standard rooms?? Do they charge more $$??

CRO said that the lodge tower rooms are 574 sq ft. and that the regular rooms are 448 sq ft.

Thanks! :earsgirl:

CaliforniaDreaming

All lodge towers are the same price, regardless of view.

The corner rooms are larger, but most of the extra space is in the hallway, not actually in the room; so they don't charge more for them.

Yes, I'd upgrade to Lagoon View or a Lodge Tower. :)

We have an intimate wedding set up for the end of August and as part of the package we have reservations for 4 nights at the GF. We made an additional night reservation the night before without the package, they said it was attached but as per disney they id they couldn't guarantee us the same room. Our wedding coordinator said only once did he have a bride and groom have to move, he admitted they were uncontrollably angry. Anyway, my question is, can I request a particular section (all we have is Lagoon View) with a king bed, how do I request it, who do I call, and what actions can I take to help assure a great view. I am currently printing out the 30 plus pages of this posting so I will read all the faqs.

Hi Cali! Here is a question for you (as well as other GF experts). If you are staying in concierge, to whom do you address you room requests? Usually room requests are faxed to the room controller, but sometimes it is different for concierge. Is that true a the GF? Who assigns the concierge rooms? Thanks!

CaliforniaDreaming
08-13-2001, 08:00 PM
Good question!

Well, when we stayed at the Polynesian Concierge I faxed my requests to them, and got all of them.

I'm not sure how the GF system works, though. These are things I need to ask in January!

MJS
08-13-2001, 09:06 PM
Thanks for the response! Please add my question to your list, I am really curious how they assign rooms in the main building. The Poly concierge CMs told me that they do it for their building, not the general room controller. Where are you staying in January?

CaliforniaDreaming
08-13-2001, 09:26 PM
Hey MJS! I will be staying at the Grand Floridian in a Lagoon View room in January. We have decided to just do a regular room this time. (we may switch to Sugar Loaf, it would only be an extra $55/night but we would have to give up the Lagoon View!) I'm anxious to get a full tour of Royal Palm Club (I've only visited the concierge desk and had a quick peak at the lounge so far - I'd really like to see a Deluxe Room, too).

We'll see what they can do for me! ;)

MJS
08-14-2001, 08:07 AM
Do you know or can you find out what the views are from the deluxe rooms? I have heard that there are some with a MK view. Also, do you know what type of room (plan A or B) has which view? Also, I learned on these boards that the GF got rid of their playground for kids. Is that true? Thanks!

CaliforniaDreaming
08-14-2001, 09:38 AM
Do you know or can you find out what the views are from the deluxe rooms?
Plan A rooms have a courtyard/pool view; and include room numbers 4319, 4320, 4419, and 4420. Plan B rooms have a view of the lagoon/wedding pavilion/Polynesian/new Theme Pool; and include room numbers 4322, 4329, 4422, and 4429. Most people actually prefer the Plan B rooms to the Plan A rooms (they want the larger balcony, and the lagoon view).

? I have heard that there are some with a MK view. Also, do you know what type of room (plan A or B) has which view?
Plan A rooms would have this view. Though it is not a direct view, I've been told it is still visable. Though, the room that would have the best (because of the trees) view (4319) is handicap.

Also, I learned on these boards that the GF got rid of their playground for kids. Is that true?
Humm, to tell you the truth, I don't ever remember seeing a playground at the GF. Let me check an old resort map... Okay, a map from 1998 does not show a playground. (and, it looks just like the one I was given in March). I can tell you that they do have a "kiddie" pool, and all of the special activities for kids by the pool (as well as in the main building - sign up at guest services). But, I can't tell you anything about a playground. Sorry...

MJS
08-14-2001, 01:19 PM
Thanks Cali! Looking at the floor plans for the deluxe rooms, one thing bothers me, and that is closet space. The closet in Plan B looks really small, relative to A. I like all of the angles in the B plan, but the closet looks like it is much smaller. It is difficult to tell just from a floorplan though. We tend to travel with too much stuff, and storage space is essential!! Which one would you request? Also, I would think that you could see the lagoon from a plan A room. Can't you see the CR?

Maybe I made up that the GF has a playground. I guess I just assumed that they would have one by the kids club. I remember that every other Disney resort that we have stayed at has one. Do you know what type of activities they have at the pool for kids? I know about the pirates cruise, tea party, adventures in cooking, etc. but what else does the resort offer?

CaliforniaDreaming
08-14-2001, 01:55 PM
Well, I think the closet in Plan B would be large enough. The way they drew the plans, they aren't based on the same scale, so the one does look bigger than the other. There is only around 50 square feet difference between the two, not including the balconies. In actual square footage, including balconies, they'd be around the same size.

I think we'll be requesting a Plan B room. I'd really like 4329 or 4429 as it's balcony has a view of the monorail (which still amazes me!) as well as the new pool. The very large balcony is the selling point for me on that type! :) Also, I like how the angles of the room change, it won't feel like a regular hotel room "box". :)

Both room types are in different locations of the hotel. I don't think you can see the CR from either.

If I was you, I'd send the concierge an e-mail to find out about all the kid's activities. I'm not on my usual computer, so I don't have the address. I'll give it to you a little later! ;) I can tell you that their telephone number is 407-824-1775, if you want to just give them a call.

MJS
08-14-2001, 02:59 PM
How far apart are rooms 43/4429 from 43/4422? Wouldn't you get the monorail view from both? I am looking at the GF resort map that is posted on this site, exactly where are the rooms located (ie. can you use the numbering on the map for gift shops and restaurants) to tell me where the concierge deluxe rooms are located? Thanks!

CaliforniaDreaming
08-14-2001, 03:08 PM
Here is their e-mail: wdw_gf_executive_reservations@wda.disney.com

Okay, Concierge deluxe 43/4419 and 43/4420 are where #7 is. Concierge deluxe 43/4422 is where #12 is, and Concierge deluxe 43/4429 is on the left of #16.

The way the 29's are located, the monorail would pass below to the right of your balcony (if you were sitting out on the balcony).

In RPC, there are 16 regular rooms and 9 honeymoon rooms with MK Views. There are other rooms with partial views, that are obstructed by trees as well as other buildings.

Thanks Cali! Do you have a floor plan for the main building? Have you stayed there before that you know where the specific rooms are located?

Here is one more question! Using the map again, where is the RPC located? The food is on the fourth floor, but where? Also, where are the elevators? Thanks!

CaliforniaDreaming
08-14-2001, 08:19 PM
You are lucky one of the CM's told me where the stairs were when I was at the GF in March! She said, "see those stairs? They'll take you up to Royal Palm!" Well, it worked! She had another CM walk with me up, and took me over to a concierge desk. :) But, I don't have a floorplan to the main building. I have seen one (the concierge had it, as well as floorplans to every room and suite type).

The Lounge is near #14 (and the desks are the floor below), and the elevators are near #4. Royal Palm takes up the entire 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors of the Main Building.

Thanks Cali! Are you concerned at all by the mixed reports on the RPC, especially the food offerings? rhays new report about Sugar Loaf is scary. Does the RPC have bottles of water and soft drinks that we could take back to the room? Should we stop at a grocery store before we arrive?

rhays
08-15-2001, 08:31 AM
MJS...I think it depends on what you want from the concierge. I wanted some snacks for my kids and DH during the day...plus that unlimited beverage supply! (Which the Poly DID have, so I don't understand why the GF didn't.)

I think it's rather pitiful when you need to purchase the refillable mugs to have soda available! I wasn't even that concerned with the soda...but I do think they need to have water available at all times. You should NOT have to stop at the store on your way to CONCIERGE! That is the POINT of concierge, to have extra perks and pampering provided to you. You are PAYING for it, so they should provide it.

My main reason for deciding to go with the Sugar Loaf was because of my DH's accident...I figured he would be spending more time at the resort instead of touring the parks, and wanted him to be able to have some snacks and drinks during the day while we were away. Don't get me wrong, there was always the 2 kinds of lemonade (is there a difference?) and tea available. But those aren't real thirst quenchers when you're hot! I would even go with all the glass and silverware...I understand the "ambience" of the resort...but I thought I had read that there were food items available for children...PBJ and other "kid" type items. Is this only available in RPC? Because it sure was no where to be found in Sugar Loaf.

I appreciate the time everyone is allowing me to vent...it's just very disheartening because this is my FIRST negative experience at Disney and we've been going for quite some time.

Ruth (who at least got to see John Travolta as he arrived at the resort! So all was not lost!!) :D

You know, I am concerned, but, I have to remember one thing. Last year when we booked Poly Concierge, I read rave reviews (on the AOL boards; the days before I found the DIS!) so we decided to try it. But, things had gone downhill; and we didn't get the service, etc that everyone raved about.

We still have a little less than a year, things can change (which, I bet they will; people aren't going to put up with this!).

IMBE just stayed there; maybe in her report it says about the drinks. I better check...

I spoke with someone in the concierge planning department this morning... Sugar Loaf concierge lounge service stops at 7pm. They don't do snacks and desserts in the evening like RPC or some of the other resorts' concierge services. So there is more than just one serving alcohol and one not. You get reduced service, too. I was a little unhappy to hear that, as my husband and I were counting on the concierge lounge in case the kids or we got munchies in the late evening.

The person I spoke with also said that sodas are available on request; they pour them in a cup for you. And glass bottles of water are available.

So... now we are thinking of going with another Deluxe resort concierge service next month... either Poly or Contemporary.

Hi... just wanted to tell you that we decided to stick with GF instead of switching to BWI concierge. Also, we decided to go with LV instead of SLC. Can you recommend any rooms for us?? We are hoping to get Bocca Chica because I've heard the views are great from there.
Any advice???

Also... I made our PS for Narcoosee's and 1900 Park Fare (pooh dinner). What do you think of Citrico's?? I've never eaten there before.

One last thing... Do you know the best way to get from GF to the Swan?? We have a PS at Palio's our first night there and I wasn't sure the best way to go.

Thanks!!

CaliforniaDreaming

Boca Chica really is a good choice. :) Just make sure you request a Magic Kingdom View, and you'll be fine! (there are a few rooms that have a blocked view of the MK, due to the way the building is designed.

I've never eaten at Citricos, so I can't really tell you about it. Friends of my parents love it, though.

You could take a bus to EPCOT, and then a boat to the Swan; maybe Guest Services could tell you of a better way. You could even go to the TTC to find a bus that goes directly to S/D.

TigrLvsPooh, I do know that to enter Sugar Loaf Key you have to use a resort key that allows access to that building since it is a concierge building and is for concierge guests only. The doors are always closed and you need to use the card reader in order to open them.

After looking at the Disney Collection Point charts for the GF and PR, I assume the GF's concierge on points is in Sugar Loaf Key. Since the Royal Palm Club isn't ever discounted and has such few rooms (most are specialty or suites) I really think it's in Sugar Loaf. It would be cheaper if you'd sell the points for $10/ea, and just pay cash for the GF Concierge. :)

I'd suggest Sago Cay or Conch Key for a Lodge Tower. Sago Cay's 4th and 5th floor are smoking optional, though.

In Sago Cay, you'd have a marina view, in Conch Key you'd have a garden/partial lagoon view.

I've taken pictures of everything I figure I could access. If I ask to be let into a conc deluxe room, will they do it?

As for my locale, I'm in Big Pine Key.....lagoon view....room 9344...Alice theme. Wow! I have MK view and I can see the Contemporary and the Poly. It's also pretty quiet. The quiet pool is indeed under rehab. There's a wall around it and they're constantly painting it to keep in pristeen white condition. Today, they fixed lanterns and flowers to it. What a touch! The new pool is pretty fun. I tried the slide today. It's great, too. I'll see about asking the questions, but I'd really like some pointers on how to get into those other rooms for pics. I'm leaving for WDW on Friday and I've booked a concierge room using may AP discount. I'm pretty sure that my TA said the reservation was concierge lodge. So does this mean I'll be at Sugar Loaf?

And I'm a little confused about Tower rooms? Is this only for deluxe or can you get this type of room with a regular concierge room. (I got lost on this post about 7 posts ago.)

Also, do they have King size beds in the concierge? I guess there's no way to get a MK view at sugar loaf, any room recommendations with this type of ressie?

TigrLvsPooh
10-09-2001, 05:42 PM
You can only get AP discounts for Lodge concierge (Sugar Loaf)... they don't offer any discounts for concierge in the main building.

Tower rooms are located in all buildings. However, you can't make a reservation for a tower concierge, you can only reserve lodge concierge and then request a tower room. I think there are only a couple in the whole building.

You can also request a king bed... but there is no guarantee.

You are right, there is no way to get MK view at Sugar Loaf.

If you really want concierge, king bed, and MK view I would reserve a room in the main building. These concierge rooms are referred to as the Royal Palm Club. I stayed there once and it is AWESOME!!! The view of the castle is perfect! :)

Well, in all honestly, most teens would not like the GF Concierge. The food offerings are pretty gormet, things that many of my teenage friends would not eat that I would.

Also, the GF Concierge really never has AP discounts. When they are available, they are for the Sugar Loaf Key Concierge. This year those AP rates were $339/night.

I have to say that the GF is a wonderful resort, and I love it! I have trips planned within the next years to stay in both concierge levels. :)

I am hoping to bring my parents next year. My mom is handicapped so we would need a handicap room. I don't know where the handicap rooms are located at the GF. I have not yet tried Concierge, but I stayed at GF a couple times as a teenager (15 and 18) and I loved it. I am 24 now. I just looked at the first page of this thread to see what was last reported as being offered in the main building's concierge. Remembering back to when I was 16, there is plenty on the list that I would like. Yes, my tastes probably still aren't refined enough for some of the items listed, but there are plenty of basics. Breakfasts (cereal, bagels, fruit, danishes), tea (sugar, chococolate chip, and oatmeal rasin cookies), twilite refresher (monterey jack cheese, veggies and dip, salads), Grand Indulgences (Chocolate covered strawberries; mini eclairs; mini cream puffs; mini key lime tarts; fruit tarts; boston cream pie tarts). And that's just the basic items that I pulled out for my tastes. They have soft drinks there as well that you can request. It was a dream as a teenager to stay in the main building. In fact, my dream is finally coming true, and I'll be staying there starting October 29 for my honeymoon! Bottom line, if your daughter is anything like me, she'll love staying there!!

After reading your posts I think that perhaps a Lagoon view room would be better. or maybe a tower room. I am clueless when it comes to the GF. I know my dd would love to stay at the GF! Any suggestions?

The Tower room is very nice. And, it has that added sitting area with second TV which is nice for some added space. I'm sure they will enjoy being on the monorail, too! Good luck with your decision!

I've read through the entire thread and now I have some questions. Sorry if they have already been posted/answered. 1.) What should I request for a garden view room? 2.) Are there even discounts on lodge tower rooms? 3.) Are we better off with a lagoon view room? 4.) Are they ever dicounted? 5.) What is the GF like during New Years Eve? thanks for any questions you can answer. :smooth: :smooth:

1) Well, I have a Garden View Room booked, and I think I'll be requesting either Boca Chica Pool View or Sago Cay Marina View. Really all rooms at the GF are great, so I'm not sure if I will even put any room requests other than a daybed.

2) Yes, they are usually available.

3) Some Lagoon View rooms do not face the Magic Kingdom, while some that do have the MK Views are blocked by trees. Personally, I enjoy looking at the grounds, but if you want to take the chance for a MK View, then book a Lagoon View.

4) You can usually get a discount on Garden View, Lagoon View, Lodge Tower, and Lodge Concierge Rooms. Sometimes discounts can be available at the Main Building Concierge, but the discounts are 15% at most (with the Disney Club). Suites are never discounted.

5) The GF will be decorated for Christmas, and they do a wonderful job!

Well, I'll be heading out for my wedding bright and early tomorrow morning. Then, after the reception on Saturday, my new husband and I will set off to drive to Disney. We are so excited. We'll get to Orlando Sunday afternoon, but we will wait until early Monday morning to head to the Grand Floridian. I cannot wait to see our room! I am so looking forward to being there. It has been at least 6 1/2 yrs since I've been to Disney or GF. My fiance went 1 1/2 yrs ago to Disney, but he has never stayed on site let alone GF. This will be my first time in the main building too! It has been a dream of mine. Gosh, I am just so excited. It is hard to believe that in 4 days I will be standing in GF!

Cali-D , You really did a great job. I just got back today from my first stay at GF. I felt much better going into a new resort with the info that you had given. I have been reading and re-reading this post and it helped with my room greatly. The CM asked me if I was a travel agent because of kowledge of the dormer room. Of course I told her no it was just a little help from some friends. Thanks for all your hard work, it is really appreciated.

I am staying at the GF for the first time. We have been travelling to WDW since 1973, but could never afford to stay at the GF.
We are combining a convention at YC with a 3 night stay at GF.
Are the refillable mugs at the GF complimentary, or if not, what is the charge?

We just returned...They are not free. You can get them from your in room snack bar for I think about $12. I can't remember what DH said the correct price was. We didn't look at the snack bar list until the last day and by then it was too late to be worth the money.

They have the coffee cup-style mugs in the rooms and they also offer these clear, water-bottle lloking ones at Gasparilla. The clear ones are much larger but I think thet are only $7.95 or $9.95. I have a collection of about 5 of those in my cupboard! LOL I feel funny about bringing them back for other trips. Not sure what the protocol is on that.

TINKERBELL4EVER

I think you can use refillable mugs at other hotels. My sister brought a mug from her son's last year stay at the Beach Club and used it at the CR this year with no problem. I was nervous but no one said anything.

CaliforniaDreaming
10-31-2001, 03:14 PM
Actually, I was told at the Polynesian that refillable mugs are only good for your stay at that resort (meaning if you were going 12/1-12/8, it would be good for those days). They don't actually ask your the dates of your stay or anything like that. But, you really shouldn't use mugs at different resorts other than where they were bought (ex. don't use CR mugs at the GF). I think as long as the mug style is the same, you can use them as many times on as many trips as you want. :)

One last thing. The extra person that was coming with us isn't coming anymore. We don't need a daybed now. Do the dormer rooms have balconies? If they do - are they as big as the others?

Myra

CaliforniaDreaming
11-02-2001, 05:53 PM
The dormer balconies are smaller, but I wouldn't say that they are *too* small. Many people love dormer rooms, while others do not. If you've never tried one, give it a try. But, if you'll be spending a lot of time on your balcony, you should consider a non-dormer room for more space.

The fax number at the GF is 407-824-3186. You can send the fax 3-5 days prior to arrival. :)

If you buy the mugs at Gasparilla, they cost $9 but if you take the ones from the mini-bar I believe they were $12. You have to ask the cashier at Gasparilla for the mugs because they don't keep them out. They are not really nice - all the other resort mugs have a picture of the resort on them or the resort logo or something - the GF mugs have "Grand Adventures for Kids" written on the side and there's a Captain Hook or Alice mug. No reference to the GF resort itself. But the mugs are definitely worth it and judging by the lack of people who had them when we were there last week - they are still a secret!

Hope that helps!

They'd have a sofa, I'm not sure if it pulls out or not. BUT, the Grand does have rollaways, you could ask for one and check-in, and they could put it in either room type (dormer or regular). Per Disney, Kind Beded rooms at the GF sleeps 2 adults maximum, plus one child under age 3 in a crib.

Hi! Well, I just got back from my honeymoon at GF, and it was wonderful. We got a honeymoon jacuzzi room as we requested. We were in 4202. We had a view of the castle and could see the fireworks from the room. It was all very beautiful. All CMs were very nice. We only ate at concierge for breakfast and the last service in the evening. Both were very nice. We also ate at Narcoossee's for dinner and 1900 Park Fare for dinner. Both of these were very nice as well.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I'll try and check back soon.

I think rooms have changed since I stayed at GF 7 years ago. But I stayed in a Standard Gardenview room in the Conch Key Lodge (great location) and the room had 2 Queen Beds and a day/sofa bed. The Conch Key Lodge is close to both the Main Bldg and the dock. I loved it!

I'm not Anne, but I can tell you what they served when we were there Oct. 11-15. For breakfast they had assorted pastries, cereals, milk, orange juice, coffee, bagels, fruit, etc. Around lunch time they served PB&J's and mini hot dogs for the kids which was wonderful! We had three princesses with us, ages 2, 4, and 7 and one of my fondest memories will be the three of them sitting at the elegant table that is just their size while the band was playing their favorite Disney tunes! But I digress, forgive me. :-) In the evenings they had wonderful dessert items, cheese and crackers, always fresh lemonade, fruit, etc. Oh how I miss that place! :-) Hope that helps.

Cali, I'm sorry, but I don't have my pictures back yet. Once I get them back and if I can get access to a scanner, I'll be sure to post some pics.

I loved the view. We had a couple of palm trees right outside that were very pretty, but didn't allow for a view of the castle from anywhere in the room. However, you could see the castle from the room, and definitely from the balcony. You could see the tables from Casperilla below. During fireworks, you had to be on the right of balcony, but the view was great. We couldn't see the extreme low ones (the building on the left blocked some of the low ones), but we could see most.

As to the food served, mfisk covered breakfast. When we were there, they had coursants (sp?), blueberry muffins, a bran type muffin, cheese danish, a fruit danish, raison bran cereal, cherios, frosted flakes, bages, slices of bread (white and a cinamon raison type I think), orange juice, cranberry juice, milk, skim milk, hot chocolate, coffee, and fruit. That is all I can remember right now.

I don't remember the last service very well. I know that had different types of wines. They also had little chocolate cups for drinks (I thought they looked cool). They had cookies (peanut butter and oatmeal raison), little cupcakes for the kids, rice crispie treats, and more that I just can't think of.

That is all I can think of for now. Please forgive my spelling. Let me know if you have any more questions.

We have reserved 2 LV rooms and I have requested a larger LV room with 2 balconies and an adjoining regular room (non - dormer b/c they seem smaller and darker to me) or regular LV connecting rooms (since the larger 2 balcony rooms do not connect) I have now been asked to chose a preference patio vs balcony.
Any info out there on LV patio rooms? I would appreciate any inmput.

mom of girls - your requests (corner room + adjoining room - non-dormer) is restricted to Big Pine Key.

Rooms at the GF do not have patios, only balconies (with the exception of the hospitality suites in Conch Key and Sago Cay which have huge patios).

Well, then the "patios" have railings, which would actually be a balcony. They aren't open like the ones at the Polynesian are.

mom of girls
11-12-2001, 01:41 PM
Okay that makes sense. Has anyone stayed in a room with these patio/balconies?
Cali-D, about my room request, I thought that there were other bldg's with a larger LV room (2 balconies) with a reg LV adjoining it. Perhaps in other bldgs the adjoining room is a suite. Do you know? Also is Big Pine Key non smoking? Is the view of MK a good one?
Maybe I'll reconsider and request 2 connecting rooms and forget about the larger corner LV room request.
Thanks

CaliforniaDreaming
11-12-2001, 01:47 PM
Most corner rooms adjoin to suites. Big Pine Key is non-smoking on floors 1-3, 4 and 5 is smoking optional. I think that the BPK MK View is a good one. It also has a view of all the MK Resorts.

The 1st floor balconies are just like all other balconies on the other floors (except the dormer rooms).

Cali,

I thought larger lagoon view rooms were located in Boca Chica (sp?). This is our family's first time going and I requested Larger LV in BC with MK view. I know it is a long shot. Would you change anything in this request? There are 2 adults and 2 children ages 3 & 5.

Also, I called to confirm my reservation the other day and they had me booked at WL. Should I be concerned? They said it was fixed in the computer now but, quite frankly I am nervous about our reservations being booked correctly.

A GF wallpaper question.

A big thank you to all of you who have taken the time to write about your experiences at the Grand Floridian, especially CaliforniaDreaming! I actually stayed there about 6 years ago and have gotten more information from you all than I got by staying there, you are much more observant than I am!

I have seen pictures of the rooms in Big Pine Key and one has flower wallpaper and one does not. Do the Dormer rooms have the wallpaper? Are there some with and some without? Do certain locations have the wallpaper? Are there more rooms with or without wallpaper?

I know it may seem finicky but I am planning a trip to WDW and want to stay at the GF again but I really don't like busy wallpaper, it makes me jumpy and I can't relax.

Thanks for you input.

Cali-D,
Thank you for the great GF info--I haven't been able to find it anywhere else.

I'm staying GF lagoon view in Feb. I thought you'd be the only one to know this one. My fingers are crossed...
1. I'd like an unobstructed MK castle view room, regular balcony. 2. I'd also like non-smoking. 3. Here's the kicker...can you tell me which room/rooms have all this AND are in the most recently renovated lodge? Do any of the larger rooms fit these criteria?

BTW, at the BC, I got one of the rooms I wanted by having a list of desirable room numbers, AND I got a comp upgrade! DH says they just wanted me to leave them alone...ha-ha!

Thanks.

I have a couple of questions regarding garden view rooms. Is there an extra charge for a king bed. Does the sofa open up? In the pictures the dormer rooms look adorable. Would it be too small for 2 adults and 1 small child?

Misti
12-12-2001, 05:42 PM
Hi! The King Bed rooms do not have an additional cost. There are available by request only--beacuse of limited availability, however, they can't guarantee your request. The dormers have two queen size beds or one king bed. However, most of the dormer rooms do not have a daybed. So, you'll need a two queen bed room in a likelihood if you want a dormer.

The daybeds do not pull out to a full sofa bed.

Hope that helps!

I do not know whether any of these rooms allow smoking or not. However, anyone can book them (subject to availability). My wife and I booked one for next month (for our anniversary). They did not even ask what the occasion was! Know that there are two kinds, Turret Rooms (6 octagonal rooms in the towers without balconies but with spectacular views) and ordinary Honeymoon rooms (Concierge Deluxe rooms on the Clarendon Level with Jacuzzi Tubs). They would not guarantee which kind we would get although the concierge said our request for a Turret room would "probably" be honored.

Well, if you want a perfect view of Cinderella's Castle, Sago Cay or Conch Key are your best choice. If you want a good view of the entire MK Resort area (MK, CR, PR, WL) then rooms in Boca Chica would be the best. Also nice is Big Pine Key's Lagoon View of the Wedding Pavilion and the Polynesian (but you wouldn't have a view of the castle).

Yes, the GF did look great for X-mas! I even watched them take down the big Gingerbread House (it took a couple days).

I really love the Alice theme! (in Conch Key and Big Pine Key). We did not have the wallpaper (the white with the design on it), instead we had light blue walls. From walking past rooms at night and seeing in the room, it looked like most had the wallpaper, while I did notice some with the blue paint instead.

I'm torn on which "theme" I should try next time. I can choose from Swan, Floral, or go w/ Alice again. But, on our concierge stay I'll get Cameo (can't wait to try it!).

Hey Erika! :) I was wondering where you've been!

My stay at the GF was great. I think the thread got lost in the DIS's shuffle, so I'm not sure where it is (plus the search is down, so I can't find it!).

We were in a lagoon view room in Big Pine Key. It was on the MK side, so we were able to see the castle. But, it was really cold while we were there, so we didn't get to enjoy the balcony. I *LOVED* the Alice theme! I could see how many people don't like it, but I really did!

Too bad it was cold. We have been down there a few times during the holidays and it usually is pretty chilly. I've never stayed in Big Pine Key but I bet the view was great. ;) Did you end up staying there the whole time or splitting between 2 resorts?? How was the remodeled courtyard pool??

We're trying to figure out how to take a quick trip down to Disney next month. We miss it terribly and NEED to get back soon. :D We're probably going to stay at either OKW or PORS because they are the cheapest on property during our dates. We aren't bringing the kids so we don't mind riding the bus. We've never stayed at OKW before but we did stay at DL a couple of years ago.

We also stayed at the Contemporary Tower Club (for NYE). It was also nice. A little pricy (holiday season!) but we would have spent more to stay in the GF LV than we did at the Tower Club. We had a MK View (looking over at the GF!). I could see our room @ the GF from the CR, and our room @ the CR from the GF. I'd like to stay at the Contemporary Tower again - maybe on the club level again (if I can't get the concierge level, or decide it is too expensive!).

The Courtyard Pool @ the GF was looking good, it looked fresh. There were ducks swimming in the pool a couple mornings.

I tried to make it as easy as possible! :)

So, what building should Cali-D request for a Garden View Room? :D Yeah, I'm good at telling people what to request - because I match what they want to a specific building or two. But, I have no idea what to request! Half tempted not to make a specific building/view request! I'm thinking Boca Chica or Sago Cay, just because I've never stayed in either! But, I'm sure I'll miss Conch or Big Pine! :D

Honestly I really liked Sago! I thought the view of the marina and Space Mountain was great!!! :) It's soooo close to Gasparilla and the bus stop too!! ;) The only long walk is to the new pool, but it's not bad.

Another thing I noticed last time, that I hadn't noticed before, was all the comotion at the "Summerhouse". It seemed like everyday they were having a reception there and it was annoying. I liked the fact that Sago was away from all the action. ;)

I found the map ...thanks! Boy the spa is a distance from everything. I am leaving tomorrow to spend 4 nights at GF and plan on going to the spa each day. I guess I better wear my walking shoes!

It's actually a really nice, relaxing walk. I enjoy it. If you are in one of the further buildings--Sago Cay, etc--it will seem a little longer.

Have a great trip! :)

Hi! :) I just read day one of your report! Would you happen to remember your room number? And, did you take any pictures of your room? Did it connect to any room? And, what was it's view?

Thanks!

My room number was 5431 and it overlooked the marina. I did take pictures however not with my digital camera.
Forgot to mention it was not a connecting room.

I just put some Cypress Suite (a two-bedroom suite in Conch Key) photos into my new on-line photo album. Here is the link: click here for my main on-line photo album. Awsome!!

What a resort.

This is where they should add a timeshare section.

Yes, this would be a great place for a DVC property to be built! However, I don't think there is enough open land to put it anywhere. Maybe they could relocate the valet lot, and build a building there (they'd all just have 'standard' views, though). I'm sure that if they really wanted to, they could work out a way!

We are a group of 8 staying in 3 different rooms. 2 of us are in the SLC, 2 of us are in the RPC and the last 4 are in a regular room. Their question is - which building besides Sugar Loaf is closes to the main building so they can be as close to us as possible? I see Big Pine - but some rooms in Sago are close to Gaspirilla's which seems better?

CaliforniaDreaming

Well, if you were to walk directly out of the side door of Conch Key (near rooms 7101/7102) and you'd walk directly into Sugar Loaf (after using a key card to enter). Big Pine is the closest of the buildings to the main building, though.

Hi, I have a question about reserving a garden view room. Can you request this type of room in the main building? I'd really like to stay there, unless they are all concierge, or unless anyone else knows of reasons not to. Thanks!

Snurk71

All rooms in the main building are concierge. Lowest price you'll probably ever get in there is close to $600/nt.

CaliforniaDreaming
04-03-2002, 06:02 PM
Sorry I haven't gotten back to you earlier.

Snurk is correct. All rooms/suites in the main building are concierge. I have seen an occasional discount (10-15%), but nothing more. These discounts are pretty rare, too.

Good garden view rooms are in Big Pine Key. That building is close to the main building, and rooms have pleasant views of the courtyard quiet pool.

Thanks for your help! When I asked the CM, she had no idea, and thought all rooms in the main building were garden!!! I will ask for Big Pine Key now. This is a dream come true to be able to stay there. I'm hoping for good discounts on the 7th.

Hi Cali!

We are leaving soon for the GF, and I can't wait!!! Thanks for all of your help!

I tried to click on the link on page one to see the Cameo decor, and I could not get it to work. Where can I see a picture of a Cameo room?

I will take lots of pictures, and although I am fairly computer-illerate I will try to get them posted! I do have a new map of the GF for you.

Thanks again!

Ok, we were originally staying at the Contemporary for our upcoming trip. My sister was going with us and decided to take classes may mester at her university. We had to change our trip to June and couldn't get anything at the Contemporary so we booked at the Grand Floridian. When I called I decided to take a chance and ask for the AP rate in the Royal Palm Club. I knew there probably wasn't one offered but figured all they could say was no. Guess what!!! They had an AP rate room available in the Royal Palm Club and I jumped on it imediately. I am so excited. I only had to call one time and there it was. I've waited to post this because I wanted to make sure it wasn't a mistake. I got my confirmation in the mail and it was correct. I just wanted to let everyone know my good news. I couldn't wait to tell y'all.

Yes, code CFQ (Annual Passholder) gives 30% off room types Garden through Concierge (Garden, Lagoon, Lodge Tower, Lodge Concierge-Sugar Loaf, Concierge-Main Building); and CEP/CGK (Summer Special) gives $100 per night off of room types Garden through Concierge.

My husband called the GF today with our room requests (four days prior to our arrival). We have a lagoon view standard room and were hoping for Conch Key, but he was told that there wouldn't be any Conch Key rooms available then. Does this mean that we called too late?

It could be that there is a convention going on and they put everyone in that building.

It could also mean that the person you were speaking to wasn't in the mood to be nice. When you called did you just talk to the front desk or did you ask for the room controller? That is the person who assigns the rooms.

CaliforniaDreaming
04-19-2002, 02:31 PM
There aren't very many lagoon view rooms in Conch Key, and these are very popular, so my guess is the CM was telling you the truth. Even if you would have called earlier, you probably would have been told the same thing.

What is a lodge tower room? I saw with the code, that these rooms are available for 295.00/night. Are they in the main building, and if so, are they smaller? What view do they have? Thanks!

CaliforniaDreaming
04-21-2002, 03:31 PM
They are in the lodge buildings. They are just standard rooms with a rounded sitting area. They are over 500 square feet (regular rooms are 400). They sleep 4, with 2 queen beds. 3/4 of these rooms have balconies. There are a total of 16 lodge towers.

I'm thinking of upgrading to a lagoon view, and noticed the boat dock. Can you take a boat to the magic kingdom? I have read that conch key and sago have the great view of the castle, but since I don't plan to be around the room much, and especially at night, would it be nicer to get a room that overlooks the resorts a different lodge? This is so hard to make a decision, and I'm not sure if I even need to make the upgrade to lagoon. My ds's are 14 and 16 - plan to be on the go continuously!

CaliforniaDreaming
04-21-2002, 04:52 PM
Yes, you can take the boat to the Magic Kingdom. Both Garden and Lagoon Views are nice, for the price your best bet is Garden View, though. I do like Lagoon View, but I sometimes wonder if the cost is really worth it. Yeah, it's great to look out at the castle (but, 1/3 of lagoon views don't look towards the castle) but the garden views are great - you can take in the whole "feel" of the resort. I have lagoon booked for my next trip, and I stayed in lagoon on my last trip. ;)

jabrown40
04-21-2002, 04:57 PM
wow, thanks for the info so fast - ok, I think I am going to keep with the garden, and keep the extra money for a great meal. I plan to eat one night at Narcoosies, and another night, we are going over to Artist Point, so obviously, we like to eat well. I also forgot to ask where this new pool with the slide is located. Is it possible to get a garden view of this pool, and be right by the pool?

CaliforniaDreaming
04-21-2002, 05:55 PM
The new pool is between the main building and the wedding pavilion. The aren't any garden view rooms overlooking it, but you can get a garden view overlooking the courtyard pool (Boca Chica or Big Pine Key).

jabrown40
04-21-2002, 06:30 PM
Thanks, I think I am going to request a room at Big Pine Key, close to the main building as possible, and hopefully this will be the closest walk to the pool as well. Are the 9100 rooms on the end closest to the main building, then the numbers get larger as you get closer to the lagoon?
