Hello everyone!

Since it's officially the first day of the week, I thought I'd start spinning the new thread!

For those just joining us, there's a fabulous new Marathon FAQ by Lisa Loves Pooh (also includes info on the half marathon)! Pop in here to answer lots of questions.

http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=725285

Lisa, what do you think of adding some of the training websites. http://www.runnersworld.com
http://www.coolrunning.com (I use their online training log)
http://www.halhigdon.com

Anyone else have some favorites?

Liz has done a great job keeping up with the names so I'll let her share that info! As we head into a new month, we're well over 60 members, now from 3 countries and 21 states...even all the way to Hawaii!

There's a few people that haven't posted since the beginning, so if you're lurking with us, give us a shout-out and let us know how you're doing!

I did 9.25 miles total this week and am up to just under a 21-minute mile. Pretty good for someone who, at the beginning of the month, never, ever would've considered competing in a half-marathon. (I was doing about 5 miles per week at a 25-minute mile back then). Now, I'm thinking about joining zagafi on the Couch to 5k. There's two 5k's here in March, I might be able to get to.
HUGE thanks to the 2005 WISH team for the inspiration!! :grouphug: I would never have even thought I could do this if it hadn't been for you guys!

Alright, who's next?

The John Bingham site:

Down 11LBS - WTG!! I would love to have a week like that.

I am going sports bra shopping today - this should be fun. So if you live in Boston area and see a lady jumping in the bra dept. - that's me!

I am so happy I actually ran yesterday. Not just fast walked but actual running on the TM. I only managed 1/4 mile but you have no idea how big an accomplishment this was for me. I ran - in public!

I did however twist my ankle this morning, so I am skipping TM today. I feel awful missing and that feels great. Guess I am getting used to moving my butt after all.

When I have a moment--I can add those websites to the FAQ--but they might serve well to be at the top of our page each week. I don't know...whatever floats your boat..just let me know :)

Today is my rest day, but I am working on drinking enough water. It is so hard to get it in when it is cold outside. Thanks to everyone who is keeping track of different things. I love to look at websites mentioned to others. Keep up the great work everyone!

I just noticed that my name is not on the list with my username...and its definitly not obvious

username = sunkissed212
name = Kimberly

I'm terrified of this...I'm going to be 100% honest here. I have been reading all these threads and I would love to participate in the 2006 1/2 marathon but just dont' even know where to start. Not to mention I have NO ONE close to me that can or will train with me. My BF is great but he's so busy with 2 jobs and courses that I just can't ask him to commit to this. I know he's going to support me but he can't do it with me all the time. I think my sister in law would like to but she's not going to be able to afford the trip down as she and my brother just bought a new home last year. So, I'm feeling really really alone right now. Anyone in the SE Lower michigan area that needs a training buddy? PM me because I sure do and I'm losing ambition FAST!

Sorry to be a downer, I guess I'm just having a bad day!

tracy51

sunkissed - Don't get discouraged! And do not feel alone! That's what we're all here for - to support and encourage each other thru the year. :sunny:

As for where to start - do what I'm doing, just start moving. We don't need to formally train until about 14wks before the race. I'm new to all this too and I'm getting lost some too with all this information. I'm reading Marathoning for Mortals, but... well, honestly, its a bit of an overload for me. All this information is great but there's SOO much of it. So for now, I'm breaking it down one portion at a time. Just going to focus on being more active, getting that cardio going, and getting some walks in. Then I'm just going to gradually increase from there so when the 14wks out hit I'm ready to do it. In the meantime, I'm checking out the websites and gradually adding to my information on this.

As for training alone - I'll have to go thru the list again, but I don't think anyone else is from the area I'm in. And my bf is being supportive and goes with me when I hit the track on Saturdays. He keeps encouraging me with this, but he can't get motivated to commit to doing it with me. If I'm able to get the time off work to make it to the race he's going to be there cheering me on. Not the same as a training buddy tho :( I think maybe we can help each other out with that - sort be virtual training buddies. PM each other to keep each other motivated and be that extra support besides everything in this thread. Let me know what ya think :)

As for how I'm doing trainingwise.... didn't hit the track yesterday. It's been raining and cool here. Yes, I know no sympathy from y'all up north, but I'm a solar-powered girl. I did hit the ellyptical yesterday and did some yoga today. So atleast I'm being more active than I've been

Lisa...I was planning to keep the FAQ link in the first post of each weekly thread, so I'll add the websites too!

Karen...Thanks for the additional info! I was looking for a John Bingham website on Dogpile, but when I saw www.waddleon.com, it didn't make sense to me. Now I get it...duh...waddle on!

Kimberly...I'm doing my training runs by myself. I know the team is here for the additional support, which helps so much! I'm still a bit scared of this whole thing, too...fear of the unknown I guess. I'm training for a 15-minute mile, so when I look at my sad 21-minute mile, it seems like I'll never make it. But I know I've still got 11months and 21 minutes is better than the 25 minutes I was doing at the beginning of the month! Come try it out with us and see how you do! I know you'll be great! :flower:

Anyone else having trouble with rest days? I base mine on my work schedule, but I don't really want to rest. It's pretty wild...I had to drag myself onto the TM a month or so ago...now I'm having a hard time staying away!

sunkissed212
01-30-2005, 10:22 PM
Thanks tracy51 and chimera for the encouragement and support. I guess I just feel alone because a lot of people have been through this before or have family/friends that live near them that can train with them and support them daily. I don't have much of that so I guess I'm feeling sorry for myself these days.

As far as the training goes...right now I am enrolled in 3 exercise classes a week so I don't have too much extra time to walk/run outside of that but I think, if things work out...I just wont register for the fall classes and do the marathon training activities instead. Right now, I do step carioaerobics on Mondays for 1 hour, Wednesdays cardiockickboxing for 1 hour and thursday is pilates for 1 hour. I love these classes and I can tell that they are making a difference and are helping me with my lifestye change and weight loss goals. I know that's not the kind of training that needs to be done for this particular event but it is keeping me active and helping me lose weight and that's what is important to me right now.

I'm going to try and not worry too much about it right now. There's a lot of time left to work on things and as long as I can actually go to the marathon, I'm still planning on doing it. Hopefully by that time, I will have made some good DIS buddies that I can meet up with while I'm down there. Especially if I make the trip solo.

Thanks again...I feel better already!

kimberly,
without a doubt you will meet lots of new buddies!! where are you in michigan? i am in NW indiana....don't worry about not having a clue about the marathon, there are several of us that are in that boat. We can all do it together! Sounds like you have your cross traing days down pat though....
welcome and make yourself at home!

Now for some of the more seasoned racers...how in the heck to I train for a 15 or 14.5 minute mile? Right now I am just walking.....and walking and walking. I think I am at about a 18 minute mile and want ot know if the goal I have set for myself is even feasable. I am 2 weeks into my pre-training. I will be doing my first 5K in early April and my first half marathon in early August. I am jsut hoping I can make it through...and would love some hints on how to train for a certain time limit.....any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I'm going to try starting the Couch Potato ot 5K training program this week. I am not sure how I'll do with it because although I am doing a lot of walking, running is a HUGE challenge for me! You start with a warm up. then alternate 60 sec jogging with 90 sec walking in week 1. I may have to start with 30 sec running & 2 min walking. We'll see how it goes.......

I really want to do this because I know I need to pick up my pace some. Hopefully if I get so I am able to jog at least some that will help increase my speed. Right now all I can do is walking.

The good news is that DH & I did some of our walking today (about 3 mi) with neighbors who are really strong, fast walkers. While I was the slowest of the 4 of us by far, I was able to keep up a much better pace that I thought I'd be able to do. I was even able to keep up a conversation while walking up some fairly long hills on our route. In the past, I'd have spent the whole way gasping for breath & stopping to rest. I didn't have to do either of those today! That felt really good. Shows me all the exercise min I've been getting in really are helping me. :cool1:

For right now you focus on just moving...when you become better accustomed to your workouts...there are things you can do to improve speed. Working on that now could just set you up for injury. As your body's fitness improves, the workouts get "easier"--when they get "easier", it's time to step it up a notch. Until then, just keep trucking along.

There are some speed training things that can be done--but again, if your body isn't ready for it, you will hurt yourself.

Hi guys! Christy here...

Ok...tried running for the first time on Friday. I've really got to build up the cardio endurance. I was definitely gasping after about a 1/5 of a mile...but ended up alternating walking and running the mile and ended up running about a 1/2. I can walk a 15 minute mile...but when I add the running in...I can still only do a 15 minute mile. I end up walking slower. I'm trucking along though.

It's so nice to have a place to come to read about other people experiences. It encourages me to keep at it.

I hope everyone has a great day!!

Hey, girls! Well, I started my Couch to 5K plan this morning. I hit the gym at 5 a.m. Insanity, you say? Well, with a 6 year old and 10 month old twins I'll take my time whenever I can get it! LOL!

I did more brisk walking than running but kept my heart rate up and will do more of the running "bursts" each time I work out. I'll get there--we all will!

I used to be very athletic so I'm having fun uncovering my inner athlete once again.

Welcome Christy!

I think Cheryl's already told us about you! :flower: Are the two of you training for the half or the full?

zag...I love that! Uncovering the inner athlete sounds fabulous! I remember...back in the day...when I considered myself to be athletic, too. I love the idea of finding it again. That calls for a dancing banana

I have my podiatrist appt this afternoon. Gonna take my current shoes in and see what he thinks. I understand from the receptionist that he's a runner, too, so I think this will be interesting!

Hi guys, Cheryl here.

I haven't been able to get much exercising done this weekend due to the "ice storm" we had in the Atlanta area. We Southerners are wimps when it comes to cold weather!! :p Got motivated Sunday afternoon and walked about an 18 minute mile with Chropistopy in my neighborhood. I've really got to build up my cardio endurance also. I am so out of shape. The main problems I'm having though is cramping in my shins and my left knee hurts really bad after jogging. I'm hoping it's just because I haven't walked/jogged in a long while and it will get easier as I keep training. If not I need to make a doctors appt within the next month or so anyway and I'll ask him to take a look at it then. I'm not giving up though. No pain no gain, right? I'm just glad to come here and get support. I know you all know what we're going through.

I am getting an MRI on my lower back on Wednesday to isolate what may be the cause of back issues that began in December and have resurfaced as of this weekend. Hopefully it should be nothing...I did the marathon and had no back issues at all. I am hoping it is b/c I am just not getting my form right as I did for the 4 months prior to all this jazz. Gotta get it done so that I can get to Physical Therapy. The problem feels very muscular at this point.

I have had neck and shoulder issues for 11 years and know all of their nuances so when something comes up, I know EXACTLY how to handle it.

This back thing is a new area for me and I just don't get it. I did use my trigger point ball that I picked up at the Health Expo at Disney--it is worth every penny. It relieves alot--but I am not getting all that I need to as I just don't know everywhere I should use it. So I am hoping it is just muscular issues that can be easily fixed.

Hi! My name is Susan and I just took the big plunge and registered for the 2006 1/2 Marathon. Whoa, big deep breath! I am going to be turning the big 5-0 in 2006 and this is my way of defying age. I plan to run the darn thing so I'm going to be training pretty hard. I work with a fabulous trainer three times a week and I trust him to have me ready to go. Looking forward to talking with all of you and hopefully meeting you next January. This is gonna be FUN!!

Welcome Susan!

What a great way to celebrate the big 5-0! We've got a few NC girls on the team...starnerella, NCRedding, TammyNC...don't know how close y'all might be to each other.

Lisa...sorry about the back stuff. Backs can be tough, but I'm sure you'll get it figured out.

According to the podiatrist...I am the SUP-IN-A-TOR (I'll be back!). High arches...not a big surprise. He recommended the Nike Air Pegasus, but says he prefers New Balance. I have an Rx to get 10% off at the New Balance store...we don't seem to have a lot of running stores here in town. Doc has a picture on his wall of him competing in the '96 Disney marathon. Apparently his finish time was 3:31 and some seconds, but he said he doesn't run anymore due to injury.

The doc also said I have heel spurs and early arthritis. TMI! I really didn't need to know that stuff!

lots of news this week then - not least about mel's feet and lisa's back, hope both get better soon!

I had a great training week (got myself up to 2.05 which means I am entering the half I was thinking about here on Feb 27) but had a total kit related disaster. There I was on Sunday doing my weekly gym kit wash, when the glass in the washing machine door exploded. There's glass everywhere and pretty much every piece of kit I own has tiny tiny shards in it - not to mention the fact that the washing machine drum now rattles!!! Had to go and buy emergency kit yesterday to take me out last night - oh it's all good fun isn't it!!!

oh - and I meant to say to sunkissed (kimberly). Are your classes at the gym - if so, why not ask the staff there if they know if there's someone there who might want to train with you - my gym often puts people together either outside, or arranges for them to come in at the same time for 'treadmill meets'.

Hi Christy-you were out there moving and that is what counts at this stage in the game! Welcome to the thread! :flower:

zag-I, too, like that phrase, wish I could find that athlete in there, hopefully it will re-emerge soon! :)

Nah, Cheryl, the southerners are not wimps, they just aren't used to it like we northerners are! An inch of ice is like a "good" winter day here, lol! :cold:

Hope your back is better soon Lisa, certainly wouldn't want you to get sidelined! :(

Welcome Susan! :sunny: Sounds like your trainer will really help but looking forward to hearing how you are doing with the thread here. Besides age is just a number right? ;)

Mel-Have fun shoe shopping, even if they are running shoes! :cool1:

Helen, that really stinks! Hope it doesn't cost a fortune to replace everything & the machine fixed too! AWESOME job on that time, I hope to be at that point by next Jan!! GL on entering your Feb race!

Renee-I think it is terrific that you can already see the difference that quitting smoking had made. WTG! :cheer2:

Tammy, that is terrific that you are back on the TM again today, keep up the great work, girl! :flower:

I was back at the gym again today, x-trainer, bike & TM plus some long stretching. I'm like about doing a new class on Sat called PiYo (pilates & yoga), sounds interesting to me!

Absolutely--EVERYONE should spend these months getting the proper training to get to the start line. It isn't really necessary to worry about the finish line until you are actually there :)

you have to politely (for the third time) tell the men in the policecar moving behind you that No you do not wish a ride.

you wear your jog bra on top of your singlet. This is especially true if you are male.

during a race, you keep turning around to see if there is still anybody behind you.

the rest of the pack is out of sight before you've run 100 yards.

you meet both the hare AND the tortoise running back towards you doing their cool-down after a race.

the only reason you don't drop out of a race is that you're embarrassed that the police in the car behind you (closing the course) will see you.

as you're rounding the corner onto Main Street and the finish line, you overhear the announcer on a microphone to the crowd of 500 saying "we are ASSURED the young lady IS coming in!" (Oh well, at least I was young).

you recognize all the regular runners on your favorite route from behind.

you get passed on the uphill by a runner pushing a double baby jog stroller.

you shoot a 24-shot roll of film during a marathon.

you make arrangements for a late checkout at the hotel.

you are more worried about the porta-potty lines than the start line.

your support crew talks about meeting you for supper, not lunch.

you have to memorize the route because you know that you will lose the back of the pack.

the truck picking up the cones is pressing on your behind. (Don't laugh-this actually happened to me!)

as you pass a course volunteer they ask you, "How many are behind you yet?" and you say "Behind me? Behind? Gosh ... I think two ... Unless they turned around!"

the awards ceremony is over before you cross the finish line.

Thanks for the link, Karen! I might have to order the T-shirt with that quote, "The miracle isn't that I finished, the miracle is that I had the courage to start"

Anyone know of any running shoe stores in Tampa/St Pete or Orlando? Looks like I'm stuck with just the New Balance store here in Sarasota. I can pop up to Tampa or St. Pete, but they're huge areas and I'd appreciate a recommendation. Of course, we're in Orlando a lot (bet y'all can guess why ::MickeyMo ) so if anyone knows of anything there, I'd love to hear about it. I'll be there in early April and late May for conferences, so I can shop in plenty of time before the 'official' training starts!

Yipppeeee, I'm a Penguin. I've done nearly all of those - after one training run that a sports shop here was doing, they hadn't just given out the spot prizes before I came in, they'd packed up and were sitting waiting for me!!!!! My motto: 'better it's me who comes last than someone it will put off running again'. time to waddle on off for my hill training now (and it's about 80 degrees here so it's gonna be a stonker!).

Hi Susan! I'm in Hickory, also about an hour away. It sounds like you are doing great. I am terribly out of shape myself. But, after 3 weeks now of working out at the gym, I have already made some progress. Not ready for an hour at a time on the TM yet, but I'll get there soon. :flower:

Hey Jackie! I've been to Hickory tons of times especially when I was a student at App. State. I came home ALOT. It was just too darned cold up in the mountains for me. I ended up transferring to UNCC.

Keep up the great work. Three weeks will turn into months and before you know it, you'll be going longer and longer. Do you TM at a gym or at home? I do it at the gym because my house is too small for gym equipment. Plus, I like the plasma TVs there - keeps me from getting too bored.

Last night I did upper body weights. Thank goodness! My legs were killing me. We have Free Motion machines at my gym and I really like them. I did some free weights too. The trainer I work with is a big believer in strength training as a way to prevent running injuries. Tonight I'm planning another light TM workout - an hour at 3.5-3.8 mph, just keeping my heart rate slightly elevated.

Thanks so much to everyone who has been so welcoming. I sympathize with the shoe struggles. It took me three tries to find a pair that works for me. Don't be afraid to take them back if you are not completely satisified. Your shoes can make or break you.

Have a great day everybody!

Who knew shoes would be so important? I used to buy Nike's based on sale price and how cool they were! :smooth: Now I actually have to think about support and pronation.... :scared1:

Thanks for the Track Shack link, Christy...I'll have to check them out. I like the list on the website of area races. Maybe I'll try to catch one of the 5K's.

Looks like I'm not going to do the Disney 10K. DD12 has a day off from school in Oct, but it's the following weekend  We're thinking about doing a 3-day for our first DVC trip and catching Not So Scary and Food and Wine ::MickeyMo

Ok, Helen...what's a stonker?

So far I'm using the TM at the gym. I have one at home but the problem is finding time to use it. With two DDs, one 7 & one 6 months, I do not seem to have a spare moment before or after work. I just can't seem to make myself get out of bed before 5:30. I do plan to schedule some TM time at home this weekend and make that a regular weekend activity.

I can hardly wait to hit the gym today! :Pinkbounc

You guys are making me laugh today.....all this talk of shoes and exercise...you would think we all were training for a marathon or something.

I have a new habbit....it is called stress walking!! I am proud to announce that my stress eating has now become stress walking. It sure is a great habbit to have. I hope to stick with it!!

Mel, good luck with your shoes. And I agree with panther...if you don't like em...take em back! I  my new shoes...but I ahve said that over and over so you all know that!! Sorry oyu are not gonna make it to the 10K.....but the Haloween party sounds like lots of fun....and it really isn't too hard to walk 10K while in the World!!

Jackie, keep up the great work!! I never thought working out would be so much fun and refreshing!! Enjoy your time at the gym!!

Yes Helen, do tell....what is a stonker? We NEED to know!!! How are you doing with all your running?

Christy, how are you? Did you ever make it to the outlet store? Do tell us of your adventures. I really want to live in Florida with all of you guys!!!! There is the ::MinnieMo and the :sunny: and lots of cool WISHers......oh to deaam!!

Off for a nice long :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: or some WATP....haven't decide what I am going to do yet today!

Liz - Stress walking is great!! :cool1: I used to do that in college when I got overwhelmed. That's how instead of gaining the freshman 15, I lost 15, hehe. Unfortunately, I let the walking fall by the wayside as I got older. Exercise is supposed to be a good way to releive/fight off stress :)

I've been in a slump the last few days and just can't get myself motivated. Don't know why though. I've been feeling really restless. It just seems like I've got so many things going on at home and at work that are in a holding pattern - I'm waiting on my AAA card so I can make the ressies for our trip, waiting for some movies that I've ordered (long story, but they are late & the place I ordered them from told me to wait 2 more weeks before they will do anything), waiting to get my tax return, at work I'm waiting on others to get me some info to finish up stuff, then this - its a long term goal with the end not for another year. I think I got too many "projects" going with no way of see any progress. Gonna try making some sort of log/chart I can keep on my wall by the ellyptical to track how I'm doing working out. Maybe put down what my goal is, say 30 minutes, and then how much I actually did. Maybe if I can see what I've been doing and that I am getting better and closer to my goal (short term - more active, long term - 1/2 marathon) it will get and keep me motivated. I'll let you know how it goes.

Liz-- Thank you for all your hard work and diligence in keeping the list up to date. Wow! There are a lot of us! And even though I have not had time to read my marathoning for mortals or absolute beginner's guide, I have been treading the mill every day. Can't wait until it is warm enough to go for a walk. Am planning to walk a 5K on March 5 and may have recruited a friend to do it with me. Haven't walked one in 3 years -- I hope it is comparable to the treadmill as far as difficulty.

Hope everyone else is doing great too!

I finally bought the Non-Runner's Marathon Training book, it really is great. I love how he has a training schedule to get you ready to train. It works perfect for me.

I did get my sports bras a Champion, love the tight fit and an Everlast a bit looser but I like the material better.

Now onto shoes, which is why I have been having ankle pain. A co-worker marathons and he plain out told me my shoes were wrong, wrong wrong. So if I am committed gotta do the shoes.

Helen's dictionary of odd English phrases, entry one (I'm sure they'll be more of them as the year goes on)

Stonker: absolute blooming nightmare of a run involving (delete as applicable) very hot weather/very cold weather/rain/hills/fast speeds/long distances/anything else that you particularly loathe!!!

And actually it wasn't too bad, it had clouded over by the time we got out there, but I still hate this run it's 6 miles up and down hills. I could walk them faster than I run them but I will not give in. I also tried out my exciting new 'I'm training for a marathon, take me seriously' drinks belt - one of those ones with the four little plastic bottles attached but I'd only rinsed it out once and the water tasted vile, but I like the belt, stops my back aching running holding a bottle.

Tracey: the chart idea's a great one to keep you motivated, but as an extra possible motivator, can I suggest 'forgetting' about the whole 13 mile thing till much much nearer the big day. It is a long way off and if you keep thinking that 13 miles is your goal you will go bonkers, instead, just aim to increase by a small distance each month. So you'll be walking say 2 miles by end of Feb, 3 miles by March. Doesn't matter if you go over (in fact it's great if you do) but it just gives you an achievement you can tick off each month - and next thing you know, you're walking 10 miles and almost there.

Got my MRI today--yippy skippy....at least I hope. 24-48 hours on the results.

Grrrr...I wanna runnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!! And have it feel good like it used to--my last decent/painless/non-sickness run was December 9th.

Reading my marathon for mortals book and getting quite humbled--gonna do it his way the next time. I think my Ego needs to be checked on day 1 of training and it can come back after I cross the finish line.

Hello, I am new here :teeth: I want to introduce myself. My name is Tammy and I live in Canada. I have always said I would do a half marathon as long as it were in a place, like say, DISNEYWORLD ::MinnieMo . Well I found my motivation...getting back into shape after having a baby...that is my goal for this year. I am due in July.

I find it frustrating right now because up until about 9 months ago, I ran and reduced it to walking (for no reason) and now that I want to train and have this amazing goal, I want to run again, but know that I can't, or shouldn't (at 18 weeks pregnant). So, I am restricted to walking on treadmills, eliptical machines and doing weights. Anyways, today I walked at 4.2 mph on the treadmill for 40 minutes. I just hope that I can bounce back after this baby and make this (1/2) Marathon work. :cheer2:

My husband is going to come with me and will do the full marathon (he has done many), and he is a tremendous support. I have mentioned to a few people that we are planning on doing this, but I am getting that "sure you will dear" look, so I think I will keep my planning and excitment restricted to a select few who are encouraging. :flower1:

Welcome, Tammy!

Glad to see you made it over this way! Hey everyone...our first WISH team baby!! :cloud9:

Looks like you're doing a pretty good pace (I'm jealous!) I played sand volleyball through my 7th month with my first pregnancy. She seems to be ok :crazy2: I carried her real low...never had breathing problems...not anything like my 2nd. I carried her high...feet and legs swelled...all the good stuff! Just keep your OB informed and listen to your body. Your exercise tolerance may slip a bit near the final months as things get more crowded :crowded:

Helen...thanks for the definition! I love learning new languages ;)

MickeySP...how was your fitting? :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc This might be my dumb question for the day, but do you buy the same size as your regular bra?

Good thoughts for your MRI, Lisa!

Lily...thanks for the link! Cool story :smooth:

Looks like we need a stress eating support group or 12-step program. You can count me in as a charter member. That's one reason I'm trying not to eat after 8pm...that's the danger zone for me!

Welcome, Bea!!! Keep up the good work--the only other thing to watch out for--your center of gravity shifts as baby gets bigger....so that'll be one thing to watch for with your workouts. Also--exercise is supposed to make delivering easier...and the weight will come off more easily than for someone who didn't work out at all during pregnancy :).

Chimera---as you post new weekly threads--you might consider posting the link on the recently ended thread. I just posted it on last weeks....I know I don't have time to check all the threads and it helps all of us if we post on the current threads :)

I'm BAAAAADDDDD---induldged in lemon cookies....my husband's fault I tell you---and the back.....I'm such a baby! Grrrrrrr. As soon as they tell me I'm not scarred for life---I'm back to the gym for some calorie burning--however modified it needs to be.

Today is my rest day, but I am working on drinking enough water. That's a real problem for me. I know that you're supposed to drink PLAIN water, but when it's just too tough, you might head for sparkling water/club soda, or buy a box of Crytal Light packets. You just pour a packet into a 24-ounce bottle and it tastes great! :)

chimera

Lisa...will do!

TammyNC and Lani...I'm not a big water fan. I like tossing a lime or lemon wedge in mine, but I dont' often buy a lime or lemon to do that with. I'll have to check out the Crystal Light!

I'm doing a modified Couch 2 5k now. I do the C25K plan (jog 1 min, walk 2 min for 20 min), then continue on to get my mileage for the day. DD12 wants to do a 1mile Run/Walk for the sea turtles in March...I think I can handle that!

Anyone started visualizing what they'll look like crossing the finish? I have a movie in my head of crossing the finish line, arms raised in victory...but it'll probably be tears...I'm a big crier! How bout everyone else? What will you look like?

Hope your results are what you were waiting for! GL!

Tammy-
Congrats! And glad you came over to the thread, sounds like you are already getting a good amount of exercise and will be in great shape to get ready for the 1/2 after that baby comes!

Mel-When I crossed the 1/2 finish last year I probably was the color of a broiled tomato! I didn't raise my arms or anything but just was happy to have crossed it I guess. If you are anything like me you probably will be crying, I was bawling when I ran into the MK & saw DH & DS waiting there for me...just a bunch of crying fools (that is was DS said, lol!) but it was the greatest moment too!

Well, I started a little run/walking today and was happy when it was over, lol! :teeth: It just shows me how out of shape I have gotten over the past year but gives me a starting point. Hope everyone has a terrific day! :sunny:

Read my M for M chapter on injuries--I am such a bad little kid!!!!

This book would have been a Godsend last season.

I read that chapter last night--and slapped my wrists this morning for even thinking of going to the gym (it would have only been the recumbant bike ;)). I didn't go :flower: .

I will be listening to their principles in the book and following it to the T!!!! Sequencing and time is important, not quantity of workouts/miles!!!! I sooo refused to buy that from my coach when he kept saying that last season.

Quote of the Day

The will to win means nothing without the will to prepare."

Are you doing what you can to prepare to cross the start line? If you haven't started reading some of the training books mentioned, perhaps you can check to see if you can get them from your local library. Visited the running store to see what kind of shoes you need?

Hoping everyone has a terrific day and is taking some baby steps (at least) toward preparing for their start line! :)

Morning everybody. It's so cool to see even more newbies signing on. I sure wasn't the new kid on the block for long.

Lisa, question for you. I noticed you are a using a new training method this time. Do you think your preparations leading into the last marathon caused your pain? If so, what are you going to do differently this time around? At my age (48) I am very nervous about injury. (That and the fact that I was in serious couch potato training until a year and a half ago) Just wondered what changes you will make to keep yourself injury free.

I was supposed to TM for one hour last night but came home with a splitting sinus headache and ended up heading to bed. Tonight I work with my trainer and I'm very afraid I'm going to hear the dreaded "I" word --- INTERVALS. :scared1: I just hate interval training. But, as they say at the gym "It's got to be done".

Wishing everybody a happy healthy day. :sunny:

Susan

I do not believe the preparations led to my pain. Something happend so subtly on the 20 mile run that caused my problem. Most likely due to fatigue I "broke form" which means I was not carrying my body properly. My sheer stubborness of not doing the "right" thing at the time brings me to where I am at today. My back problems now are unlike what caused those painful problems in December.

I think I have it narrowed down to I simply cannot hang from things like a high bar or monkey bars as it stretches out my spine and my back cannot be stretched that way. We discovered that when my coach/PT would lie us down on the ground and do our post long run stretches for us--that whenever she did the stretch where you hold her wrists and she holds yours and you stretch out---my back would cramp up. It did this 2 weeks in a row when we realized--do not stretch my back.

And dummy me on Monday--my back was feeling better...but I just wanted to "check" and hung on my kids swing set...and the pain returned. So I think the cause of my problem at this point is a hyperextension of sorts.

My coaches used the national Team in Training training plan and buffered it with inspiration from Bingham (Marathoning for Mortals)--so they told us to do lots of things which my brain just didn't process and I just pushed along the way I thought I should. After reading much of the book--it looks like I had some key opportunities to ease up and my pace times improved...but at one point they did start doing a reverse trend.

I am going to take the slow approach and just watch the clock (which my coaches tried to get me to do, but I could not ignore the distance :(). It will all be about the same--just my mentality towards the approach will be that of less stubbornness and more patience.

Any other pains due to running that I got over the season were corrected by getting better equipment and/or listening to coaches for treatment and changes in what I was doing. Only b/c I listened to them and finally STOPPED running for several several days did I heal and then was fine. My marathon time would have probably been around 5:30-6hours had I not been ill.

The MRI's are just to make sure that there is no "phsyical injury" to my back so that I can go do some physical therapy to help mitigate a reoccurance and know exactly what types of things are good to do and what kinds of things are not good to do if I wish to keep running as a sport that I can do healthy.

I have an 11 year old neck injury that leads to shoulder problems as the muscles compensate for weaknesses. After much PT and massage and chiropractor--I am well versed of what I need to do if pain comes back or something happens. I know what will release the sore spots, what will increase range of motion, that I need a strong upper body to get virtually no pain--and most importantly when I need to ease up and rest. I trained just fine and in fact the physical activity helped maintain my neck and shoulders and endorphins help me relax that area when it is stressed.

With the back--I am clueless and dumb and will probably break my back if I don't get educated properly on how to care for it.

Thanks so much Lisa! What I'm taking from your comments is to have the right equipment (hence all of our preoccupation with our shoes), listen to your trainer (or coach or somebody who knows lots about this running stuff) and listen to your body. I'm paying attention to all of you who have done this before and taking all of your tips seriously. I hope you get good news on the MRI soon.

Hi Liz - can you please add me to the list?! :wave2:
I have been faithfully exercising every day except for one day to rest a week - cross-training every other day (swimming or ellipse). I started with 20 minutes per day and am adding 5 minutes every week until I get to an hour a day (6 miles a day. I am tring to get ready to follow the marathoning for moratls full marathon run/walk plan. I know it says you should be doing 20 miles a week for a year but I really want to do the full! (Not ego I swear!) I just feel like with everyone doing an hour a day that I should up my numbers quicker - I know I have to be going a lot further and quicker than I am very soon. I am just afraid of doing to much too fast and injuring myself - any thoughts?

Lily, great story!!! Any plans for you and a maraathon or 1/2 for you yet? I really have to say a big thanks to you!!! You are a big part of my reason for being here!!! Thanks for your encouragement and your determination!!!!Welll, Thanks for the compliment. Still sitting the fence here about what I wanna do. Still having some start up problems so I am coming here to read everyone moving forward and hope I can ride the wave soon. I am thinking I need to talk with someone around here about setting some small goals and seeing what might work out for me.

Everyone, keep going one step at a time.

sounds like you're doing fine Alysa. I don't do an hour a day yet. I read that part in the MforM book about conditioning for a year before starting training. I think we'll all be ok as long as we train smart. It's so exciting, though. I know I have a hard time taking rest days 'cause I want to keep moving forward. I'm still only around a 20-minute mile. makes that 15 minute mile seem FAR away

Come on in, Lily...water's fine! http://www.anchoredbygrace.com/smileys/mgsurfing.gif

Morning all! It's a beautiful sunny day here in NC and is supposed to get nice and warm this weekend. Maybe I'll get an outdoor run in with my trainer on Sunday. The weather has been too bad for the last several weekends to get out on the road.

Last night I did not have to the the dreaded INTERVALS :scared1: I got to do curcuit training instead, which I love. Go figure, I'm strange. I actually like running with squats, lunges and ball work in between. Tonight I have to make up for my headache day and do my base training on the treadmill.

Wishing everybody and great Friday and a fabulous weekend. See you on next week's thread!

Well, the weather is great today (-4 C, don't know Farenheit) so I walked for 6 kms (which I think is around 3.5 miles), trying not to fall on the ice on the side walks. Things will get better in the Spring, I am sure. I am hoping to get to the gym to do some leg exercises but I did do some exercises on the ball, though with this new weight distribution, I keep falling off, so may retire that for the time being. Yesterday I received some very reassuring result from some prenatal tests I had and so to celebrate, I had 2 chocolate bars and a bag of chips. :guilty:

My desire to do this 1/2 marthon grows more each day, thanks everyone for the motivation!! :cheer2:

hi all- just read the whole thread!!!
great to hear all the enthusiasum and encouragement going on!!! :cheer2:

i have been walking on my tm every day for 45 minutes to an hour for the past 2 weeks - at an unknown speed - due to dead batteries is the part that records time- speed and distance.

we'll i finally got the right batteries last night  -
boy was i psyched to see how fast i was walking- so i decided to try for speed last night instead of distance-

we'll i have been walking alot slower than i envisioned-
it took me 22 minutes to complete a mile :sad1:

oh well!!! i guess i can only go up from here!!!!!!!!

at this point should i keep walking the hr and trying to up the speed slowly over time and go for indurance???
or should i try for a shorter distance ( a mile) and try to increase the speed???

panther...glad to hear someone's having nice weather. We've got a cold front sliding through, so it's drizzly and 40-something. Haven't seen the sun yet :sunny:
What are you doing for your Intervals? I always like circuits. We just got our Y membership (DH works there now) so I'm looking forward to doing my cross-training there.

Bea...congrats on the good test results! I used to get those ravenous, nauseating hunger pangs when I was pregnant...chased 'em with Little Debbie Brownies.
According to onlineconversions.com, -4C is about 25F :cold: Colder than I wanna be either way.

carita...the consensus seems to be to work on mileage, speed will come later. Most experts (including Lisa Loves Pooh) recommend not increasing mileage more than 10% total each week. I've been doing that and finding that the speed is improving on its own. I did 9.25 miles last week, so I'm going for 10 this week.

nj-I agree, work on the mileage and the speed will come later. Great job doing your walk & getting those batteries in place, now you'll know exactly where you stand! :) :cool1:

Just wanted to check in with everyone. Still working on getting into the groove of walking easily -- my gait and pace are very uneven, though I am doing 3 miles pretty much every day at 56 minutes or less. I am also having terrible shin splints (?) for about the first mile on the treadmill , and will need to work on stretching, etc. some more so that that doesn't impede my progress or my enthusiasm.

It is so great to see how committed everyone here is -- glad to know that when my commitment waivers (as I am sure it will), you are all here supporting and encouraging!

Hey, I just realized that I can call DVC on Monday to make our reservation for the 2006 half-marathon trip -- 11 months out. WOW!!! Here it comes!

Hello all! Glad to hear things are going well for everyone. Lisa, I hope you get good news about your back! It is so motivating to hear from you all about your exercises and workouts - it just makes me want to jump up and run!!! :bounce:

Training is going okay this week - I ran Tuesday and today (yesterday morning was fogged in...), and will try to do a longer run tomorrow night, and a short one Sunday afternoon. I also walked DS in the stroller a couple days. Yea! My next race is February 19th, so I need to stay on the ball! :flower:

DH just started running, and is following Galloway's plan for a 5K, then will do the 10K, then the marathon training program. If anyone is interested, it is at www.jeffgalloway.com. I'm so proud of him - he's doing great!!!

Happy walking, running, and cross-training to everyone! :teeth:

Glad to see everyone checking in! Looks like you're all doing pretty well. I did 2 miles today...2 more tomorrow for my first double-digit week! :cool1:

Cam, dis...I'm jealous! We're not staying in our home resort so I'm waiting on the 7-month window for booking. I'm torn between BCV/BWV and VWL. Seems like BCV/BWV would be a good option since the race starts and ends at EPCOT, but DH was wondering if the Int'l Gateway entrance will be open that early.

Renee...have you heard anything more from WDW on the blocks? Would there be a WISH block at any of the deluxe resorts?

After a lot of circling around it, I finally started the C25K program today! Since I really am a Penguin, I did have to modify week #1 because any running at all is really pushing for me. What I did was:
~10 min stretches from the Cool Running site
~5 min brisk walk to warm up
~1 min jogging followed by 3 min walking for aprox 20 min (I tried for 2 min walking but couldn't do it yet). I was able to do 5 segments of 1 min jogging
~walked home to complete the 30 min walk/jog session

My plan as of now is to do the jog 1 min, walk 3 min for 21 min which will give me 6 jog sessions for a week or so, then try to cut down the walking time until I can actually do the 1st week of C25K as it is written, then move on with the program from there. I was wondering what those of you with more experience than me think. Should I go this way, or cut down my runs to 30 sec then do 90 sec walking? I felt that the jog 1, walk 3 would be easier to keep track of for me, as if I didn't have DH with me today I would have had no idea what I was doing about 1/2 way through!

This thread is so motivational! It really inspires me to see how well everyone is doing, & your experience is teaching me a lot! I, too, am trying to uncover my inner athlete, but she's buried pretty deep, & has been there for a long time, so it will take her a while to find her way out! I especially liked what Helen said earlier in the week about it being better to be the last one to finish than to be one of those who kept putting off trying. I've been one of those for far too long, & I'm not going to let that happen any more! :moped:

I can SOOOOOO relate to you with this!! I am having a torrid love affair with my shoes!! They are Asics too, by the way!! And hey, you don't have to break them in!!! It is amazing what a differance a properly fit, and appropriate shoe will make!! I LOVE MY SHOES!!! And I have kept up my walking for3 weeks now!! :earseek: What is up with that? The old me would have never thought it possible!!

Not much help on the shorts...it is far too cold here to wear them here....so as unpleasant as it may be for others...I have been wearing my spndex pants. I also have a pair of shorts that I bought on a fluke...they were $5...but they have the water wicking material...so I will try them when it gets a little warmer. I have heard you should not put your running clothes in the dryer though.......

Anyway, I am waiting for my new iPod Shuffle so I can get going on my nice LONG walk today. Mr. FedExman is supposed to be here today with it!! Guess I better get in the shower....before he gets here!!

Enjoy your new shoes and your new self! I know I am!!!

Nancy-
I think the way you are doing it is great! I would continue that way until, like you said, you can do week 1 of the C25K program. Better to pace yourself now than try too hard at the beginning, get sore & frustrated and not go back to it. It will pay off in the end! :flower:

goofyshel-we aren't going to let you quit, either, you can do it!!!! :cool1:

Mel-I am thrilled to be able to be staying at BWV again, we are just renting points (so I am a DVC wannabe according to my local Disney group) and happy to have found someone whose home resort is BWV. I would have like to try BCV this time (because I love Beaches & cream!) but since it is more points per night vs the standard studio at BWV we opted to stay more nights there instead. I don't know if the Int'l Gateway will be open that early, it was my understanding that it wouldn't be but who knows. Gl with your ressies! :)

crzy4pooh-GL with your training, that race is pretty close! I really like Jeff Galloways site, there is lots of good info on there! :)

nj-Awesome shoes, girl, I have the same ones, mine are white, silver & yellow! Happy training in those shoes! :cool1:

Today was my long day at the gym, 80 mins total-did the cross trainer, bike and TM, plus lots of stretching. Just need to do my crunches at home and I'll be done. Having a great day since it is the day I weigh myself (once a week) and I am down another 4.2 pounds, YIPPEE!!!!    I think a 4 pounds loss deserves 4 dancing bananas!!!! Quote of the Day

" Nobody who ever gave his best regretted it." George Halas

I've been inspired by you guys to do my best when I am exercising. Sometime when I think I can't finish that interval or can't go any faster I think about everyone here who is working hard too, moving their bodies (for some of us) in ways we haven't before, others who are improving time, stength & flexibility. That's what I think about and then decide I can finish that workout or pedal faster. I'm not going to be the fastest runner that crosses that line next January, but I am going to know that I gave my best! :)

I don't know if I'll ever be the fastest runner across the line, but it will sure be great just bein' out there with all of you! I'm thinking this may have to be my new annual tradition. Maybe one year I will work up to the full marathon!

Still doing my modified C25K, but didn't go so well today. Wed I had the best workout I've had...ever...but today just didnt cut it (perhaps it was a stonker?). I still made my two miles, but walked most...very few bursts of speed. I'm thinking I may cut back to training 4 days a week and increase the mileage for each day.

DD12 and I are registering for a 1 mile fun run/walk on March 5 on Siesta Key. It's to help raise money for sea turtle research. We get t-shirts for registering and a ribbon for completing the race. Mel - I am not sure I have lost over 80lbs since last time I bought any bra so I am guessing. I took a size smaller in the Everlast than the Champion. I honestly love the fit, I may wear these all teh time - LOL!

I love the Non-Runner book, I got to stage 3 of pretraining and it was so easy. I was already at 2 for a couple weeks. I like not having a mileage or rate goal just a time and approx speed. He gives you a 3 minute window and that is great.

Can't wait to go Monday for my running shoes, I hope they don't fall down laughing at the chubby chick wanting to do a 1/2 marathon - LOL!

For whoever (Karen?) asked about International Gateway being opened I believe it is Not at that time of night/morning. I think everyone is required to use the bus transportation that is provided or your vehicle. That is what happpened this year.

This is great to read about everyone getting new gear, deciding how to best get started and taking those steps. The foundation is getting set. Get your papers out and start recording your time/miles if you can. You will be amazed that before long you are putting on more miles than you ever thought possible. It is fascinating.

Keep on keepin' on.

Hello All...

No news on the back yet--but no news is good news. I'm sure if I was walking around with a stress fracture or something--they'd let me know it.

We went to Magic Kingdom on Friday--it was cooolllddd..and my back was on the mend and not misbehaving (i.e. getting worse) while doing all that walking. I do note today some traveling twinges in my tush and mid-thigh (backside)...so I am wondering if indeedy this is just a case of developing sciatica.

Hubby thinks a fracture (temporary) would be better than sciatica...I'm on the "glass is half full" thinking--and believing that at least sciatica can be managed just like my neck pains.

I'm convinced that one really really good butt massage would just solve all of my problems in my low back. But hey--you know how embarassing it is to tell the masseuse to massage your hiney--and really (seriously)--the concern over sharing unexpected sounds just causes even more tension back there and ends up being $50 wasted. So alas, I suffer with tight tushy (tight from stress--and unfortunately not actual tone and muscle aka firm).

So maybe Monday I will here.

I will start in the gym again Monday--and am thinking of using the recumbant bike to just get the blood flowing again. I am noticing my firm quardriceps are losing a little tone :(. They miss running.

Wow...I'm really looking forward to new shoes...and a new bra! DH and I are gonna have a weekend without kids at the end of the month. Thinking of spending Saturday in Tampa, so I'm gonna try to shoe shop then...if I can wait that long :goodvibes

Lily...bummer on the gateway. I was hoping if I stayed at BWV or BCV, I wouldnt' have to get up so early to ride the bus. Btw...thanks for sharing your marathon photos...you really made it look like a lot of fun!

Lisa...glad to hear the back seems better. I had sciatica during my first pregnancy...not the most fun. Hopefully, it's neither one and will mend quickly with rest!

It is good to get on here and get caught up with everyone. I was swamped with work for a few days and this is the first chance I've had to check-in.

Sounds like everyone is doing great getting new shoes, etc. That is something that I really need to go check into. I'm going to go to our local sporting goods store and then try to find a running store in the next town to see what they say.

I have still been on the TM 5/7 days each week and it feels great. I am not regretting it each morning now, so I know I'm on the right track.

I also had a question about accomodations at WDW for the 1/2 next year. I stayed at CBR this past trip. If you are staying at one of the monorail resorts, can you take the monorail to the start and then back from the finish to your resort? Also, where did others stay besides CBR and how was the transportation to and from the start/finish? Thanks for the information.

Have a great evening everyone!

Hi All, glad everyone's doing so well - and having so much fun. I had to run alone today as it was raining yesterday so I wimped out of joining my normal running buddy on the second half of her four hour run (gulp - that'll be me in ten months) and went this morning instead (when running buddy was running a little half marathon just to get her legs moving!!!!!!!!!). It was actually pretty fun, I haven't run with music for ages and had an old tape in my walkman (am slowly converting to the ipod idea) and just keeping getting surprised by all these songs I hadn't run to in ages. Anyway I did 2.10 - and more importantly, I didn't slow down in the second hour.

It is incredibly humid here though and I now have a large chafing welt across my midriff - never had one there before. I think it means I've gained a bit of weight - it's been going up and down about 3lb all week - but wierdly so has running buddy's. We've decided we're cosmically linked and must always remain at the same combined weight no matter how hard we try, shes losing at the moment so I'm getting it. Oh well back on the lean cuisines!

Anyway, couple of notes for people

Nancy: firstly well done for getting started, and warming up and stretching etc (I'd have a lot less injuries if I did either!!!), but just wanted to suggest that it might be best to stretch after your warmup, as stretching cold muscles can actually pull them.

Karen : yipppeee on the weight loss. keep at it, just think ever lb you lose is going to get you nearer that 2.00 time

Shorts buyers: Just a thought, but if you're after the bike pant type of short, some brands like asics do ones with little pockets in the back just big enough for emergency cash, car keys and some sweets or something. I tried to buy some yesterday, but stupidly forgot to take my asthma inhaler (the thing I want to put in the pocket) with me so they're still in the shop!!

Tammy: I stayed at AKL and the transport was fine. Got on a bus about 3.30 with no problems, then about 6am partner drove from there to MK to watch me (he didn't actually manage to see me but that's a long story!!). Going to stay there again this year if we can get a deal (I like the confirmation letter that reads 'guest would like to see zebra from bedroom), or CBR if not.

Anyway, that's my lot, 'see' you all next week

Great to see everyone out there moving! I think I'm going to have to jump on the bandwagon soon & get some new shoes. I have a couple of pretty good pair now but there, well, more that pretty well broken in!

As for my C25K, I feel like I'm starting from somewhere UNDER the couch! :earseek: I'll get there though - to do week #1 of C25K that is!

Helen, thanks for the info on warm up. Actually I do know that & included some walking as part of the 10 min stretching before the warm up walk. I had such bad shin splints when I first started walking 2 yrs ago that I learned about stretching the very painful way! It's a good thing to remind people about though.

Goofyshell, you are not alone! As I said earlier, I feel like I'm starting from under the couch! Hang in there, we can both do it! :Pinkbounc
