I really, really, really, really, really don't get it. Why would anyone bid on these?

At the risk of sounding incredibly stupid, I'll ask you guys a question. NO, I did not bid on this auction, really! But, I was thinking of getting my DS's disney dollars for our trip next week as a way to control their spending. We've never bought them before. Where do you buy them at the parks? Can you buy them at your resort? I read on the board somewhere that you can buy them at your local Disney store but if I bring my younger DS (who is home with me during the day) to the Disney store we will wind up buying much more then Disney Dollars. If there is some other way of buying them online, I obviously don't want to pay shipping (or more than their face value, LOL!).
Thanks and don't laugh at my question! :)

I'm not laughing, I promise. You have actually asked a very good question. And I don't think that I can answer it very well. :( I DON'T know if DDs are available at the parks or resorts. :confused3 You are right, you CAN buy them at your local TDS. If going there is a problem for you, do you think that you could ask a NON Disney fan to stop in and buy them FOR you?
I am almost 99% positive that there is no way to buy them on-line. Sorry. :(
Good Luck!

You can buy them at the Disney Store or from any place at Disney. Dollar for Dollar....why in the world would someone buy them for more than face value.....

Some people collect them, but these look like the standard ones you can buy today. No need to pay extra for that.

I am amazed at some of these ebay auctions. My sister recently sold some small odds & ends items in a lot...the final bid was $1.99. The postage & insurance options the buyer chose was over $12.00...

Where do you buy them at the parks?
You can ask at any register at WDW if they have any Disney Dollars and they will either exchange dollar for dollar or you can get your change when you buy something in Disney Dollars. Granted, not all cash registers will have the same supply, but if you make a habit to ask each time you buy something I'm sure you'll get a nice collection.

I always wonder about this . . . I want to email the bidders and tell them the truth!

My guess by looking at things the bidder has bought in the past, is that they are a collector of Disney Dollars. Perhaps this is something they want or need for their collection with the design that is on these particular ones. I think this bidder knew exactly what they were bidding...not uninformed at all...Whatever floats your boat............... :p

Yeah - but paying more than 50% over the value of an item - and KNOWING it??? I sure hope that I never want my boat to float THAT way!!!

Thanks for the answers.
About ebay - I think people see something there & assume either it must be a bargain or it must be something you can't get anywhere else. I've seen toys up for auction that you could much cheaper just walking into Target. Just have to remember "buyer beware."

What truth. Unless I am missing something the auction listing was completely honest.

Truth isn't really the right word. The correct term would be "reality." In other words, explain to the bidder that he/she is bidding on something worth $42 and not a penny more and is still readily available for purchase for that exact price. Heck, if I knew I could get that kind of response, I'd go out and pick up a sack of Disney Dollars tomorrow to auction.

Isn't that the same as me giving you a $20 and you give me $100!? :earboy2:

Mickey4ever must be right- if you have old Disney dollars you may want to sell them.

Probably someone who collects Disney Dollars..
I sold some older ones last year for quite a bit more than their face value.. Actually, now that I think of it, I still have some older ones I could put up for auction.. ;)

Of course you wouldn't do that, since it would be auction interference, and they'll go on and you'll be suspended LOL.
I just picked up $60 for the 3 grands (I'm going to pad them and put them in a checkbook cover for a gift..doesn't hurt the bills, but makes it fun to use them) at guest services (they had to scramble to get them, since they only have $25 in each drawer, she said). Now, I wonder if I should sell them and give them more American dollars LOL. I also got them all vouchers for our trip...I thought about selling them too, and giving them more value LOL.

Of course. Certainly wasn't suggesting that anyone actually DO that.
Just to be clear, I don't think the seller did anything wrong at all. The auction stated very clearly what was being sold and what it was worth.
I HAVE sold Disney Dollars for more than face value, but they were mint uncirculated bills in protective holders and were no longer available versions. I am a collectibles dealer and sold them as collectibles. Unless you are a collector (or something, not necessarily Disney stuff), you may not understand the world of collecting. Us crazy folk will often pay what may seem like insane prices to acquire that special item we need to fill a gap in our collection.

DMRick - how/where are you going to pad them? What a cool idea! :cool1:

I have a padding machine my hubby made, and also some of the cheaper ones..they look like two long pieces of plastic with screws on the end. I'll put a piece of chipboard (the stuff at the back of pads) together with some bills, put in the padder, tighten it tight (you can use hubby's vice, bricks, etc) and while I'll use padding glue, you can use Elmer's glue. Then once it dries, I'll put them in a checkbook folder. If I remember, I'll post a picture when I get them done. The kids love peeling them off one by one. I often do it with "real" dollars.

That is cool DMRick-
I think am going to start collecting and saving these disney dollars and selling them 5-10 years later. Better return then the stock market and lower risk. Unless Disney goes under they will always at least be worth face value!

After seeing this thread I had to go back and look at my old Disney Dollars. I have some from 1987, which I believe was the first year they were available, and from 2001 and WDW's 25th anniversary.

I know I have some (don't think it's much though) stuffed in the back of a photo album from our 1995 trip. (Same year as that $120+ auction!) You can bet I'm going to take a look at those when I get home.
Boy if you could get that return on investment every time at the end of each trip I'd buy a 100 bucks or so to pay for a trip 5 years down the line.
