View Full Version : Backpack Rant

I'm really sorry if I'm about to step on some toes here, but I feel it needs to be said.

When wearing a backpack, please remember that there are people around you, and do not get offended if someone tells you that you are hitting people.

Our recent visit was marred with this problem several times. People stuff the backpack to the brink and then either forget they are wearing them or don't care that it is in someone elses space. I found it especially troublesome when we were in packed lines for Haunted Mansion and POC.

Thanks for letting me rant!!

I guess it's easy to forget something strapped on your back sometimes. Yes, people should apologize if they bump someone else with their bag. I like the people who keep turning from side to side, continueing to slap me with their back pack and ignoring my "excuse me, I'm right behind you". :teeth: This happens all of the time on comuter trains here in Los Angeles too!

I know just what you mean. My husband carries a backpack, and more than once, he bopped me right in the face with it. I kept telling him to take it off his back while we were waiting in line, which is what I did with mine.

Actually, this is exactly why I won't "let"
my DH wear one! Neither do I...

Just wondering where you all carry extra clothes if you don't have a backpack? We go in winter so we are always either stripping clothes off or adding clothes on throughout the day. We tend to stay in the park all day and not leave in the afternoon. My fanny pack carries money and the camera so its close by but other than everyone carrying around extra clothes, I can't really think of anything other than a backpack.

I carried a small backpack on our last trip and was never aware of bumping anyone with it (but I guess that's the point right?). I'm just wondering why people are standing so close that they would be bumped by someone wearing one. I figure if I bump someone with my little backpack then they're probably standing too close. Of course, we usually go in off season so it's less crowded. I wonder how much that plays into it? The ones that bother me are the rolling backpacks I was seeing everywhere. Those just seem like an accident waiting to happen.

We rented lockers. We go in Spring,so we have the opposit problem you have. We endure heat. The mornings start off nippy,so we do windbreakers,by noon,we're sweating. So we put our stuff in lockers, and if we need them again by evening,we just go get em' out! :sunny:

How much do lockers cost and how big are they? Do they get taken early? How about getting back to a locker to get something - is it treck at MK or Epcot?

I wear a back pack (I actually started out with a smaller one and the straps were killing me so I bought a new one at WDW) but I try to take it off when we are in tight places (like the stretching room in HM). If I were to hit someone I would definitely apologize though!

True, we did think about doing that once. It seems so inconvenient, do you find it so? We also park hop, do you know if you would just keep your receipt for the next park or do you have to pay for another locker?

I just wanted to add that I've never had a problem with people and backpacks, maybe its because I do like to keep my distance. But rolling backpacks? the kind on wheels that you pull?? If thats what they are, yikes, those should be banned and treated the same as a wagon...very dangerous.

All4fun,
The little back packs are perfect for touring the parks. The ones I hate are those huge backpacks that are loaded beyond believe! I keep my distance, but those backpacks invade a large space. It's crazy.
Why anyone wants to lug around all that stuff is beyond me! Bad for the back. :teeth: I'm happy with my small back pack.

ITA with you. My little backpack served me well on our last trip - and it functioned as a diaper bag for my ds as well! I also don't understand why people have to lug so much stuff around. I saw some of those people with their huge packs and wondered if they also had their kitchen sink in there, lol. I have never been hit by one though. I guess I know to keep my distance. :) I also agree that it's best to take it off in tight spaces.

And yes, I did see people with rolling backpacks on our last trip - crazy!

To the poster who asked about the lockers - yes, you can keep your receipt and park hop, just like with the rental strollers. It's been quite a while since I rented a locker but I believe you pay something like $5 (could be more now, I don't know). When we rented a few years ago, we also got a Disney dollar when we returned the key, but I don't know if they're still doing that either. Personally though, the lockers are just a little too inconvenient for me. I don't want to trek all the way to the front of the park to get my stuff. Of course if I didn't have a stroller to stuff things in, and had coats to lug around, then that would be a little different.

When visiting in the winter we just wrap our hoodies around our waists when it gets warm enough to take them off.

I also wonder why some people find it neccesary to carry around these hulking packs. If you need that much stuff with you, I agree, rent a locker!

SandyinCanada,

I'v looked and looked for an answer...
so?" We also park hop, do you know if you would just keep your receipt for the next park or do you have to pay for another locker?"

I can't remember, and I'v looked at a few sites and there is nothing mentioned where I looked. I'm SURE there is SOMETHING written somewhere...just can't find it now. Seems to me we saved receipts but don't take that as gospel. ;) Maybe someone else has a locker answer.Good luck

If you keep the receipt you can get a locker at no charge in the next park.

As someone who takes the streetcar to work, I know all about being whacked with backpacks. Better yet, last week, this guy next to me was holding onto the ceiling bar, and kept elbowing me in the head. I don't know why I didn't say something after the first time, but I finally said "excuse me", he seemed surprised. How can you not know you're elbowing someone? Aren't you attached to your elbows?

Kungaloosh!

Putting on my flame retardant suit.

OK I leave at least 1 foot of room between me and the person in front of me. Why is it I always have this person behind me almost in my back pocket. I mean if you bump into someone's rear over and over. Wouldn't that tell you "YOU ARE TO CLOSE!!" If the person with the back pack on is backing up, then yes I would say excuse me. But if they are just moving from side to side or turning in spot. How are they bumping you if you left enough space.

I am that RUDE person in front of all of you that after being bumped several times from the back, finally turns to you and says " Am I in your way?"

Come on people if you stand back a few more inches does that mean it will take more time for you to get on the ride? NO you are still next in line. You will get the same spot as if you are standing :crowded: this close to me. I will just have my hands on my hips and swing them to keep you from elbowing me in the back again. Oh and if I by accident hit you with my elbow I will say sorry. If you almost knock me over from behind, how is that my fault? I expect you to say excuse me also and MOVE BACK a few inches. The excuse the person behind me is to close doesn't cut it with me. Ie if he jumped off the bridge would you also? So if that person is so rude as to be to close to you. You don't have to be rude to me by getting that close?????

Sorry for the rant. :grouphug:

Watch out on the buses, too. If you're standing with a backpack on your back and you turn, you are probably working on whacking someone sitting behind you in the face with the backpack.

This is a usual problem for daily public transport commuters.

fran99999:
I, for one, am not complaining about you or others like
you who are conciously aware of those around them.
I agree that it's silly to smash oneself up against
the one in front just to gain an inch or two.

MHO is that the people who are so good at whacking
others with their backpacks are the ones who aren't
used to wearing them. They seem to be "first-timers" on vacation.
They forget that they now have this huge growth
on their backs & proceed to squeeze into doorways,
thru lines, force their way thru small stores,
they back up, etc., & it will not matter
how much room the poor person near them has left
as "space" - if the one wearing the pack doesn't
take into account the extra inches (sometimes FEET),
attached to themselves they will invariably whack
whoever's closest - sometimes more than one person, too.

I'd like to add a side rant to the backpack issue,
that being women with large purses!
My DS, clearly visible in his stroller & we are standing still
so as to let ladies by, has been whacked & nearly
whacked (and HARD) by many careless women.
The ones who have the big suitcase jutting
from their shoulders, or worse being carried on
their arms, are nearly lethal to those in strollers
& wheelchairs (this is HEAD LEVEL).
I carry my purse (not huge), on my shoulder, too,
but believe me I try to be aware of someone close by,
especially if I'm invading their space to get around them!

Sorry to hijack the thread, now back to the OT. :hourglass

Out of necessity? We don;t want to but where do you put your stuff? We are 2 adults, 2 kids. I carry the camera, passes. my ID and some money in my fanny pack (can't fit too much else in there), I don't carry a purse in the parks. DH gets the back pack which has medicines we require in the day, film and extra camera batteries, a few rain ponchos cause those wet rides are cold in the winter. I also need my prescription sunglasses, kleenex for sure, used to carry hats for the kids when they were younger, moleskins and sometimes extra clothes. Theres no way all that is going to fit in a fanny pack and I can't see anything I dont need to take with me. :confused3

Yup! I'm in the den right now, the desk sits up against the window, and I can see everything from the CR to the MK from this view. (It's a side window, so my neighbors house blocks the more Southernly parts of WDW from this angle)

It takes me between 20 and 30 minutes to get to WDW, depending on what area I'm going to. If I could drive straight there it would be ten minutes, but I have to cut down and over if that makes any sense.

Nah, I pretty much agreed with you as well. I've never been hit by one and I assume its because I don't get that close to one to be hit, lol. But I can see it happening, as well as swinging purses, strollers...grrrr, those strollers, wheelchairs, elbows, people stomping on my foot or my fav, stopping dead in front of you...not much you can do about it except watch where everyone else is going and hopefully dodge or duck at the right times, lol

I just have a problem with people in general not aware that they are NOT the only ones in a crowd of THOUSANDS!! Whether it is strollers, backpacks, or like Sandyincanada said just stopping in the middle of the walkway. Come on..if you have to look at the map scoot over to the side.

I push not only a stroller but a double stroller and most of the people that get the backs of their legs run over are those that come to a complete sudden stop in front of me.

Unfortunately I had to learn to become commando with my stroller as people love to cut you off like you are invisible. :moped:

People in Indiana must be much more courteous than in Massachusetts. I can't recall ever being hit from behind by another shopper's basket at the store. I, myself, usually wait a respectful distance from the person in front of me while waiting to unload my basket at checkout. Might be some people have different expectations, though. One time at a grocery in Gainesville, Florida, I was totally chewed out by the woman in front of me because I started to unload my cart before the cashier had completely rung up her order. Wow!

I wanted to add my two cents. My pet peeve is not respecting someones individual space...big big problem in Disney if you ask me...

I always leave quite a bit of room between myself and the person in front of me..or I deliberately make myself big in line..Elbows out, hands on my hips. Its awful when you are in a long line already and you have someone practically jumping on your back.

We have a backpack carrier for our 15 month DD and of course I'm always watching my husband to be careful turning around or moving thru crowds..but come people..You shouldn't feel its okay to be that close to anyone!! ;-)
