We purchased APs in September 04, at full price, of course. I was told by my guide that we could upgrade our old APs to the newly reduced PAP at Guest Services. That means the upgrade will cost about $6. I have my reciept from the original purchase in September.

Has anyone tried to do this? It'd be nice to know if they really let us do it. I'd love to be able to go to PI and the water parks in May. We are celebrating our 25th anniversary in May for 10 days, and those extras would be really fun.

We did it and got back around $20 for the four of us. We upgraded from APs to PAPs. I did not need the receipt, just the APs and my DVC member card and drivers licenses for me and DW. Quick and easy, and modestly lucrative.

And really, how many days can you say "I got money back from Disney today"??? That alone is worth the time in the swap.

Great, I'm happy to hear someone else did this. I will plan on it working. Thanks for the reply.

We received back $20 on four also. So it is a better deal to upgrade than to keep the ones you have

We upgraded our AP to a PAP last week using our DVC discount. Initially I tried to upgrade them at Epcot, the CM told me it would cost 100.00 to upgrade our two cards, I told him I didn't think that was right, but he insisted....sooo I told him I would keep the APs that I had.Didn't want to argue with him... Later on that night while at DTD, I was able to upgrade them without a problem....and got 10.00 back! :cool1: :earseek:

So theoretically we should be able to upgrade at one of the gates, not a DVC resort front desk? I was unclear on the locations.

Thanks for the warning about holding out for a KNOWLEDGEABLE Cast Member!

I tried to upgrade at AK and CM told me it would cost me 180$ because I had already used my AP 11 days! NO WAY JOSE!

The important thing to remember here is: You have to go to Guest Services to do the upgrade; trying it at the gate is not gonna cut it.

But it does work. If the first CM doesn't know what to do, have them talk to a manager (ever so nicely, of course). We had a very nice, very new Brazilian CM doing ours. Tho her English was excellent, I figured this was a chance to practise my Portguese, and that worked fine excpet for terms like "DVC member" and "upgrade" where I don;t remember the Portuguese or even the Spanish word. But with her manager's help, she got me the upgrade and my $20. Plus she flirted with my 7 yr old DS, who returned the favor and really enjoyed it.

Is there a limit on how much time is left on the AP to be eligible for the upgrade? We bought ours in May 04 and we'll be back at Disney in April 05
If we could get $20.00 back and my son could get Disney Quest that would surely make his trip great and ours.

Thanks in advance for any and all replies :wave2:

I ws thinking the same thing as you WDWJWEB1.... We have a trip planned from 4/22 - 5-1 and our passes expire on 4/25 so we will figure if we can upgrade them on 4/22 and use them as PAP's for those 3 days before we have to renew them, we could go to Disney Quest for free. I am not sure if it is worth the hassle or not? Also, I wanted to ask if we upgrade them to a PAP when we renew them do we have to renew them as PAP or can we renew them as AP's?

I upgraded two AP's purchased in September to PAP's last week. I got about $10 in Disney Dollars back.

To those of you wondering if it's worth the hassle to upgrade for just a few days--I say yes. There is no time limit, but of course the pass will expire on the day it was due to expire originally, you won't get any extra days. It really isn't a hassle. It took the CM at Guest Services (I was at MGM but any park guest services can handle this) about 5 minutes to complete the transaction. You'll get money back AND you can go to Disney Quest or a water park (and a couple of other places I am too tired to remember right now) for FREE. To me it's a win-win situation, why not go for it? :flower1: :cheer2: :cool1: :goodvibes  :smooth:

There should not be any time limit. Upgrades from AP to PAP are always retroactive to the original purchase date.

We're going in May and will only have about 3 weeks left on our APs when we upgrade. No worries here. :)

We have the same situation - we're in Disney this coming March and our AP passes expire the first week of April.
We would really get some money back? How does that work? Sorry, I'm still havint trouble with the math. :confused3

A DVC member PAP (purchased 1/1/05 or afterwards) is actually about $5 LESS than an AP cost before we got the discount. So for every AP purchased in 2004 that you upgrade to a PAP now, (if you are a DVC member, which I know you are KSP) you get a little over $5 back. You simply hand your current AP (one purchased before DVC members got the discount, prior to 1/1/05) to any CM at a Guest Services in any of the 4 major parks. You will also need photo ID and your blue DVC card.

The CM will take away your "old" AP and give you a brand new PAP and a little more than $5 back (I think it came to $10.68 for me when I upgraded two passes last week). I got $10 in Disney Dollars and the change in "real" money, not sure if anyone here got the $10 in the form of cash, but the CM who handled my transaction said it had to be in Disney Dollars. No problem spending $10 in Disney money at Disney world, so that was fine with me. And BTW, I didn't even have to do anything special at the turnstile when I used the new pass, my fingers still worked, that surprised me. :wizard: :cheer2:

I am so pleased to hear there are many who have done this. I have never had a PAP, but have always wanted one. My husband just wouldn't spend the extra. Now, I get to enjoy a PAP while we celebrate our 25th. A special occasion with a special PAP. Maybe I'll even get him to go to Pleasure Island!

My DH and I purchased APs in Dec-04 and upgraded them last week to PAPs. I upgraded mine on Tuesday and received $5+ back as others have reported. My husband upgraded his on Thursday at the same desk and received $0 back. When we asked about the $5, we were told that getting money back had been a mistake.

We chose not to pursue the issue (over $5) but left pondering the many inconsistent answers we had encountered during this visit. Oh, well ... maybe it was simply a strange week.

I knew once M.E. caught wind of this it was curtains for sure!!! :rotfl2:

I knew I should have immediately flown to WDW the minute I heard they were passing out money even if it was $5 bucks :guilty: !

Don't know why, but I thought we could also upgrade and renew at the same time.. I planned on upgrading my AP in June.. I activated it last Dec.. So, was I mistaken?.. can I not renew the pass so it would expire in June 06?

Can we send our AP's in to guest services and have them upgraded by mail?

You will be able to upgrade the AP in June but your expiration date on the PAP will remain December. Disney does not prorate AP upgrades.

You would have to do it in person at a Guest Relations location as you must present a photo ID when purchasing or renewing AP/PAP's.

My DH is in Orlando golfing and was able to upgrade his AP to a PAP last night at Guest Services near Pleasure Island. We purchased our APs in 2004, so with the new DVC Discount, he not only received the upgrade but also $5.35 back. Outstanding deal, and one we wouldn't have know about, if not for these boards!!!

I can't wait to upgrade my DS's and my APs in August :sunny:

Thanks for the reply GoldenOldie..

So If I am understanding this correctly... I can apply my full purchase price ($403) to the discounted PAP ($390).. and NOTHING is prorated?.. I'm basically exchanging an AP that has been "used" 6 months, or an upgraded pass that has 6 months "left".. AND getting 10 bucks back to boot?

Sweet !!

Yep, you got it! It's a real bonus, and as someone posted earlier on this thread about the only time you get money BACK from WDW! :worship: :goodvibes :smooth:

Where is the least confused place to do this?

Epcot Guest Relations, by the front of the entrance,

or MK's Guest Relations?

Will be trying to do this at Easter... GOldi

Will be trying to do this at Easter... GOldiBoth of our upgrades were performed at the EPCOT Guest Relations (near front entrance). I would rate that location as "very confused" concerning the process. My experience on Tuesday took about 30 minutes to complete (getting the $5+ back). My DH's upgrade took less time but more people and a "bad answer."

I wonder if the Interntaional Gateway wouldn't be a good location for the upgrade. Seems like there would be a good flow of DVC members through that gate.

Don't know how staff might be rotated from one location to another, though.

We'll be upgrading at the Intenational Gateway in Epcot. That's where we've done most of our purchases, etc. I am so excited, even if I don't get the $5 back.
