But you could file your federal return for free. You just wouldn't get the state one filed free, but I believe you get a discount.
Nevermind :D

irs.gov has a free file program I've used for the last couple of year. First year Turbo Tax, second year HR Block. It definately speeds up your refund to file electronically!

Based on what I read in USA TODAY - everyone qualifies to file for free using Turbo Tax.
Some of the other software compaines have income or age restrictions for the free filing, but Turbo Tax is free for all.

Here is the IRS list of free tax filing websites:
http://www.irs.gov/app/freeFile/jsp/index.jsp?
Some of these you need to go from IRS.gov to get it for free, going to the site might charge a fee.

If you are qualified for earned income credit in certain states then you can file federal AND state for FREE thru www.statetaxfreedom.com ... had to read it in the small print to find out they charge for state filing ($9.95) if you don't go thru the state taxfreedom web site. :badpc:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why am I being charged for a state return?
This Web site offers free federal tax return preparation and e-file only and also gives you an opportunity to prepare your state at a discount. To obtain a free state tax return, you must file in a participating state, meet the eligibility criteria and access TurboTax to prepare and e-file your federal and state tax returns from your state government Web site.
States participating in the Free File Alliance are: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia.
If you are filing a return in one of these states, visit www.statetaxfreedom.com to see if you qualify for free federal and state tax returns. You must begin and finish both federal and state returns from the same Web site.

Thanks! I was wondering why it kept saying $19.95 to file the state, but the federal was free. I wasn't on the right site.

Do these sites do the calculations for you? Or do you have to figure out the amounts?

I know that Turbotax does the calculations for you. I've used them for the past three years. It's great!
