I think I'm too late for this year, but DH says the family will cheer me on if I want to do it next year. Right now, I walk 2 miles in about 40 minutes, so I've got a long way to go. I'd love some virtual training buddies...anyone interested?

It's funny you made this post. I was just thinking this afternoon that I'm missing out on all the marathon fun and I want to get in some of the action for 2006. I'm not quite sure how to do it or what I'd need to do to get in shape. We own DVC so I'd have to do some major juggling with our points.
I'm sorry to ramble. I guess I should say, I'm interested in possibly doing the marathon next year. I just don't know where or how to get started and if I'd be able to squeeze in an extra vacation next year.

Im thinking of attempting the marathon next yr. What a great sense of accomplishment. Im sure DH would tell me "do what you want"
As of now we're going to skip WDW next yr and go on the cruise instead.
If I do the marathon I'll get my WDW trip in too!

I might have a bit of an ulterior motive in doing the marathon ;) I'm trying to convince DH that we can't live without a DVC membership since they may be getting rid of the AP/FL resident discounts.
I'm also thinking maybe I should try the half-marathon first. I think the parks might be shut down by the time I could walk the full :earseek:

i've been toying with the idea of the half marathon for next year-
the only exercize i like is walking and low impact aerobics.
does anyone have any training ideas???
i walk a mile 3miles in about 45 minutes - how would you train for something like this??? is a half marathon 13 miles????
any training suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction too. So there is a 1/2 and a full marathon? Does anyone know when registrations are being accepted? I seem to remember that it happens early in the year.
It's really exciting to think about. Maybe I could convince one or two of my sisters to come along and cheer me on. That would make it even more fun.

Dh & I are fairly sure we'll both be doing the half marathon next year and I did the 1/2 last year so I know what to expect.
First, just start by getting out there and getting exercise on a regular basis. If you are walking or light jogging on a regular basis and strengthening your body by doing this you can accomplish the 13.1 miles.
Second, you can start strictly training for the marathon about 3-4 months ahead of time by following a training schedule. I like the ones on
http://www.halhigdon.com/ Just go down the left side of the screen to where it says "Training Programs" and there you'll find one that you can live with. They have 2 easier ones for beginner and walking if you want to try those.
DH & I are toying with the idea of training for one 1/2 marathon close to home on Memorial Day weekend and then again for the WDW one.
The WDW marathon is split into 2 groups-those doing the 1/2 (13.1 miles) and those doing the ful (26.2 miles). We've decided to do the half because even though we might be able to do the full, especially with a year to prepare, we'd be wiped out physically and not be able to enjoy the parks for the week afterward. Last year I rested after my marathon on marathon day but then enjoyed the parks for a whole week so it wasn't that bad-especially because I was bad about not training at the end.
Also--registration started last year on the day after the marathon, not sure how they'll be doing that this year though. But I remember that it didn't fill totally up for quite some time.
Anyway-perhaps we can urge each other on and have a whole group going back in 2006!

Thanks, Karen. Guess I'd better get working on those 13.1 miles!
Maybe when everyone gets back we can get the scoop on this year!

That's what I was thinking. When all our buddies get back, they can give us all the juicy details. I can't wait to hear how well they all did! I was talking to my teen son about the marathon for '06 and he said he would like to run it with me so I've got my training partner all lined up! I can just see us now! :)

Hi guys, registration for 2006 opens tomorrow (ie the 10th of January) but from what I remember, they didn't fill up this year till about September. I'm registering tomorrow though as I so want to do the marathon. I'm already all excited, so I really want to get my place.
As for training tips, I've run 11 half marathons now (I entered my first one two years ago saying, well I'll just do one) and the most important things I've learnt is that so long as you put in the miles with your training you'll get to the end (and normally suprise yourself with your time as well) and that stressing about training/times etc just makes you miserable so don't do it, know what you have to do, and just aim to go out there and put one foot in front of the other and get a little bit further each week, everything will come right on the day. Mind you, come November when I have to do my first four hour run, I'd like one of you to remind me of that!!!!!

I finished the 1/2 this morning and am now resting by surfing the DIS. I believe that I heard someone say that they were splitting the 1/2 and full next year. Something about the 1/2 being done on Saturday and the full on Sunday. Just thought I'd pass along that information.
As for training, when I registered last year, I was losing weight and exercising on the TM. I fell off the wagon and really hadn't done anything in at least 6 months if not longer. My first goal was to make it to the start and then my next goal was not to be swept up by not keeping the 16 min. mile. I met my goal and now have my medal. Right now my legs are tight, but the worst problem is I have a couple of fairly large blisters. One burst while walking and the other one hasn't. I'm walking very tenderly right now. It was all worth it though because I made it and it has helped inspire me to really get back on track now with my exercising and eating right.
If you haven't ever participated, it was such a sense of accomplishment and very emotional at the finish line. For those of you that have participated in one, you already know that feeling. I saw every type of person out there trying their best. I'll stop chatting now, but just thought I'd share a little of my (little bit) of experience.
Good luck to those that decide to participate next year and I really do recommend training and not doing like I did.

I agree with everything that Tammy said. I feel so good about what I was able to do this morning. I got up at 2:30 in the morning, went to the start line, did not get swept, and am now the proud owner of a Donald medal. I was terrible at training, but somehow the adrenline pulled me through today!! I am planning on doing it again next year, and my goal will be to finish in under 3 hours.
It is a wonderful experience, and I recommed everyone give it a try!!

Hi -- I'm a newbie here, but just finished the WDW Half-Marathon earlier today with a time of 2:22 or so. I was hoping for better, but I'm happy with it as it is still faster than the time I got for last year's half.
Just a note about the marathon: If you are thinking about the WDW Marathon, you might consider doing the half for next year, and then doing the full in 2007 (in two years). Why? Not only will that give you a transitionary shorter distance to shoot for (so you don't feel overwhelmed), but more important, 2007 is WDW's 20th anniversary marathon! I ran the full marathon in 2003, which was its 15th anniversary. They went out of their way to make sure there was a lot of extra merchandise and stuff, and they even made a special anniversary finisher's medal. It might worth the extra wait (unless you want to do the full next year AND the year after that!). :)

Count me in! I'm planning on joining Team in Training (www.teamintraining.org) so I can do something positive for others while working on a personal goal. My immediate goal is a 5k in April. I've got to get all my accumulated flab (baby and otherwise!) off. I've had it and want to be fit and active again!!
This is a worthwhile book (The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer by David A. Whitsett) as is this (Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham, Jenny Hadfield).

Here it is...it's a little scary. You have to be able to finish in 3.5 hours or you'll get swept. I did some math (that was the scary part:rolleyes: ) I'm really going to have to do some training to get within the 3.5 hour time frame. Is it feasible to walk it or should I plan to walk-run?

I plan to do the half in 2006. (I am not making any 2007 plans yet! LOL!)
Chimera -- this year they actually swept people who didn't make that pace. But there is some question as to whether they swept people too quickly or not. Yep, it's definitely walkable, but you DO have to walk quite fast. But since you have a year, you have plenty of time to work on it! :)
I did the half last year, but haven't started a serious training program since. I want to run a local 10 mile race in May and am planning to start training soon. I second the recommendation for The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer by David A. Whitsett (Thanks Zagafi!). I was always the slowest in gym, the last one chosen for a team etc., but following the guidance of this book, I was able to complete 2 half marathons! 10 miles is my favorite distance, but I am toying with the idea of running the full in 2007. You can do it chimera! It just takes time and dedication! Good luck!

I was thinking about doing the marathon in 2007! But maybe I could do the half in 2006 and then the full in 2007? I have to think on that one, because of the $$$$ We would like to go on a cruise in 2006 and couldn't afford both. AND we ARE going to buy our house this year so I don't know about the $$$$. Maybe the lottery fairy will come along and help me out! LOL!!!

Yes, I would say those are fighting words for sure. You can do anything you set your mind to. I am sore this morning, but the blisters aren't too bad. DH is rubbing me down with Asprin Cream and I'm taking Tylenol, so all is well, just moving a little slow. Set your mind to it and then make sure you train!!! That is the biggest piece of advice I can give.
I also have heard that they swept people who really were keeping the pace. We'll have to wait and get the information first hand instead of second hand through me. I wouldn't want to say something wrong.

If you are thinking of looking ahead towards next year, check out the info posted on the WWOS website. The 1/2 will now be held on Sat and the full on Sun, the 5K & kids races will be held on Sat too.

I JUST FINISHED THE HALF MARATHON YESTERDAY! :)
It was my first and it was AWESOME!! I recommend if you are interested... DO IT! I finished in 2:59 and I am not a big runner- I just started...I just wanted to avoid being picked up by the "van of shame"!! LOL!!
There were people of all different shapes and sizes there.
I recommend doing a half before doing a full.... You don't realize how long 13.1 miles is!
And for next year, Disney's changed things up a bit. The half marathon will be on Saturday and the full will be on Sunday.
It was definitley the best experience-- I cried when we ran through Main Street...Such an emotional experience. Loved having characters all along the way...and NO LINES to take pictures. It was great!!!!!!!! :cheer2:

Those of you that have run the marathon, I have a question... I'm not where I need to be weight wise. Do you recommend loosing the weight first and then beginning the training for the marathon or can you feasably lose and train at the same time?

You can eat right while training--but you cannot diet..meaning you cannot try to lose weight with a calorie restricting diet or you risk not having enough food to give you the energy you need to train.
I would not let your weight get in your way of training--but if you want to lose weight--you would be better off starting now--and then around July/August as you really need to train and start getting in those long days--just switch to watching what you eat.
When I started training, I found out that not everyone loses weight while training and some will even gain a few pounds (as they trade fat for muscle). Don't let your weight get in the way of your dreams :)

OK, I'm thinking about doing the 1/2 in 2006. I had wanted to sign up this year, but there was just too much else going on in life to be able to train for it. I'm going to keep working out & give it a little thought. I also want to hear more reports from this years marathoners- I'd especially like to know if they would do it again. I've even devised a strategy for getting me there that early in the AM, as I am definitely NOT a morning person!

DH has since amended his comment to say that he thinks I should try a 5K FIRST, just so I know what it's like. I think that's actually decent advice, so I'm gonna plan to keep training for the half and look for some local 5K to do in between.

Hubby would never hug me when I was sweaty--it was soo fun to torment him. Sad to say b/c of my illness--I didn't sweat...so no sweaty hug for him on Sunday even if I wanted to give him one. Lack of sweat is a sign that you are heading to dehydration--but I was fine. I had no other symptoms and my mental capacity was still around.
One of our Wishers used the Marathoning for Mortals--I forget who--you may wish to post a separate thread just to catch her attention--though I'm sure that all of our Wishers from the Marathon weekend will be peeking in here :)

I just finished and loved it! I have learned that next years will have two seprate days, one day for the half the other for the full. there were alot of WISHERS this year and I got to meet many of them. It was definitely alot of fun (except of course about what I just learned that sweepers really do sweep) But for those of you who have been on WISH you have seen that its been the year long talk. We have gotten to know one another ini so many ways and to finally meet p for the one event we have talked about for so long..well it was just so much fun.
Hope you;ll all decide on going. Ill be there next year as well..........

I finished the half on Sunday in 3:14. Not sure if I'll be going to the 2006 half in WDW but I'm seriously considering the 1/2 in Philadelphia in September.
It was a wonderful experience for me. I signed up for the 2005 half because I needed some motivation to exercise. It's hard for me to exercise without a goal. It definitely led me to keep walking a lot more than I otherwise would have.
I also wanted to take on a challenge like this with a group, not alone. The support here on WISH has been wonderful. Knowing that I'd get to meet other WISHers on race weekend kept me motivated to keep training. The dinner at Trails' End on Saturday evening was so nice - we all had a great time getting to know each other. I wore my lime green WISH scarf (made by one of our wonderful WISHers) during the race and was cheered on by other WISH participants and spectators.
I stayed with 2 other WISHers (and a WISH husband and a WISH stalker :teeth: ) through the entire half. We kept each other on pace and helped each other through the rough spots. This is NOT a stroll in the park. We were pushing the entire way, walking very briskly, to meet a 15 minute mile pace and it truly helped that we did it as a group.
These are memories I'll look back on all of my life and cherish. If you have the chance, I say GO FOR IT!!

Okay, first post on this board :D I've been reading the posts for this years marathon and y'all are so supportive. BF, DD and I are planning are first "family" trip ever and both of theirs first trip to WDW so money might be an issue, but I really want to do the 1/2 next year. Mentioned this to BF and he thought it sounded like a good idea for the "just the 2 of us long weekend" trip to Disney we'd like to take after the family trip.
I ran a 10k in high school but nothing since. I'm going to check out the books & sites y'all have recommended and keep reading here. If nothing else, a goal like this just might be the motivation I need to keep my promise to myself to get back in shape/be more active.

I'm agreeing with Wiskband. We are here until Saturday and thankfully this morning DH said why don't you just meet us later at MK. I think everyone is a little different when it comes to park touring. Last year I did the 1/2 & then toured the parks for the entire week afterward. However, next year, since I am still toying with the idea of doing the full, I may opt to tour first and then run. Not sure how bad the crowds are right after NYE?

So it is possible to walk it?? I walk 3mph now...having a hard time imagining that I'll be able to walk faster that far. I guess that's what training's for!
I walk 2 miles every other day now. If I can increase that by 1 mile each month, I should be fairly well on track by Nov, then can work on increasing speed. Does that sound reasonable to those of you that have done this before? Or should I work on increasing speed, then distance??

It's a push--after hearing about the sweeper bus---3 miles an hour is a 20 minute mile and you will be picked up at 10K or 6.2 miles. You need to work on getting that speed to 4 miles an hour if not even better than that to better your possibility of success.
You have to train for both--how I trained for the full (in a very condensed nutshell), were that short runs (or walks) were for speed work, long runs (or walks) were to get your distnance in--eventually your pacing on the long walks will improve b/c of the speed effort you put in during the week. And what once felt like you were working hard to do becomes easy. Seriously--the roadblocking by all the walkers is a killer--so anything you can do to benefit your race will benefit you then.

Since this is the first year I missed the Marathon since its start, I am debating on doing both 1/2 and full next year. I see you are given a special bib and a special medal as well as the finishing medals from each of the race. So then I will be caught back up on my medals.
They dont call me GOOFYFREEK for nothing.
:earseek:
That's 39 miles in one weekend...OUCH!

I am getting so excited about the prospect of running in the 1/2 marathon next year! I just ordered Marathoning for Mortals from my county library and can't wait to read it and get started. You guys are such an inspiration to me!

Some one is a little wrong on there Anniversary dates. 2003 was the 10th running of the event. I had to go back and look at my medals to verify.

I remember reading sometime ago that you would have maintain 3.8 miles in order to walk it............
Dont hold me to that I am not good with the math.
However, ( and this is just my opinion) I think walking is harder! I jogged/walked the half this year and when I walked I walked fast and there were lots of walkers striding right by me! For me jogging then walking at a slower pace was easier. I certainly can;t jog the whole way and cant walk that fast the whole way, so I found a happy medium.
But like someone else said start training.........
youll find your groove. I have a TM and found in the beginning that I would walk 3 minutes then finish that mile and so on......... that soon became hard when I got into longer distances. It turns out that jogging for 3 minutes the walking for 3 minutes became my thing! However, on the course, I didnt bring a watch so who knows if thats even what I followed. It seems everything was out the window when I was in the real thing! It turns out that I would walk during hills (there werent many), water stations, and finally bottle necks ( there were many).
I jogged through wide area and whenever I felt I could.
Again, this is what worked for me. I did see and hear people that were using a stopwatch. I assume thats how they trained and perhaps they had a personal time they wanted to beat. For me, I just wanted to finish!
lol
good luck

Drumroll please :rockband:
As much as I hate to bring it up, Anyone want to take on the roll of organizing?
I wouldn;t mind helping in doing this but I sure can;t handle the pressure of so many relying on me! lol
It scares me a bit! :guilty:
I mean kmay did a great job in the hotel gathering info as did karebear and everyone else involed in helping us get there and meet.
Again, I could make some calls and get some info..........
If someone else would like to aid.........
that would be cool.............
I guess the first order of business would be actually registering and them get a full head count and making a group ressie....................
any thoughts?
any brave souls want to step up with me? lol
Come on it was fun! and it will give us something to talk about for a whole year besides food! lol!

I should further explain my fear in this role is that I am seriuosly computer stupid...I could't even print my name tag. I go on line and do two things, go to wish and play spades!! lol.
I remember Kamy having to make lists then update them and send lots of emails.......
Not sure how all that is done.
HELP! lol

Well I might do it with Team in Training again---but I can be along for the ride just in case--I can bring Rocky's inspirational tip of the week :) Or thread maiden--or whatever.
I think we should already say that Friday Night is Trail's End Night :)
Me and hubby already talked--anything I do next one--the girls are not staying in my room those 2 nights before--NO WAY, NO HOW :)

So chimera--are you going to be our fearless weekly poster leader?:)
Seriously, tag or not, I can do the post organization. Do you like weekly training threads or monthly? I can get us started later today!

Well---most "formal" training programs commence about 4-5 months out. So it might not be undreasonable to just start with a Monthly thread (this can be January) and switch to weekly maybe by August or September or sooner if you notice that the threads are just too large. I know that once called "training" thread--Karebear liked to limit the content to the actual training...and then they would post other threads for other information. "Training" exclusive threads probably can wait until summer or so IMHO.
But up to you, whatever you like!
I like the idea of putting it in the signature too--then--it feels like we're REALLY committed :earseek: .

New thread posted. I'd be happy to keep track of our team members! Does it work better with PM's or should we go to regular email?

Wow! You are all so on for this! I just got back today and am still trying to get myself organized. I definitely sould say to anyone who want info on how to get started that the John Bingham book mentioned earlier is a really great source of info and support. I am definitely a penguin!
Good luck to everyone in your training. One thing for sure is to start walking now!
Me, I prefer Wogging. (My term for the walk/jog thing I do.) Walking really can be painful for the entire time. Jogging sounds like it was too fast for me to do, so I combined them to make a Wog.
If you have the time to learn, racewalking is a good way to learn to walk fast. I think the site is racewalk.com (http://www.racewalk.com/defaultRW.asp) where you can pick up pointers on the technique.
