Im Baaack Again! LOL! 16 nights at DVC!!! VWL and SSR

Hi all, Happy New Year!!

We arrived home this morning from our 16 night stay at WDW. The weather could have been better, but we still enjoyed ourselves immensely and I shed a little tear yesterday when we were packing up our studio at SSR.

Yes we stayed 16 nights in a studio and we lived to tell about it! Actually I would do it again in a heartbeat, to be able to stay 16 nights during Prime season. (At least while the boys are still young)

We drove since it was such a long stay and it was great to have that many days between the drive because we didnt dread it this time.

Ok on to the Resorts:
We checked into VWL on Dec. 16th for our 10 night stay in a studio. We arrived around 11 am and our check in was very efficient. Our room was ready around 2 pm.

The main Lobby was very nicely decorated and the tree was Huge! It was kind of vast to me, but my Ds's liked the big screen TV seating area behind the bell desk.

Our studio was very well stocked, clean and in a good location. It was 2503 NS and it had a courtyard view with the Inn rooms across from us. The exit stairs were right outside our door. (exit only, no re-entry)
I was VERY impressed with the amount of storage and the size of the studio at VWL. We (okay I) packed for the different weather, Holiday decorations, gifts, food, etc. and our VWL studio had so much storage space, large closet, drawers in the vanity and kitchenette, cubbies, deep dresser storage I was kicking myself for not packing more! LOL Dh refuses to allow anyone to handle our luggage (small price I pay for 16 nights in the world LOL) so he was glad I didnt pack more, BUT I could have!

We did bring our stroller, which came in handy for bringing things in from the parking lot and taking laundry to the first floor laundry room. The laundry was very convenient and I liked not having to leave the building to do laundry.

We went to MVMCP the following evening (Dec. 17) and had a great time. We had a 4:40 PS at Liberty Tree Tavern. Dh and the boys were not impressed. I liked the turkey and dressing and the rolls, but on a whole, I didnt think it was worth $90.
I followed Tourguidemikes touring plan and although it was sold out, the last night, and a friday night we followed the schedule and did everything we wanted to do and had front row for the parade. There was one time we got off schedule during the fireworks (in Fantasyland) and it was craazy! Using TGM we were able to avoid the large crowded areas so we quickly got back on track!
I was even able to purchase the pins, T-shirts, and photo frame. For us, it was worth it, but I can see how it would have been frustrating for the legally sane that don't have OCD! LOL None of us cared much for the snickerdoodle type cookies, but the Hot Cocoa made up for it, and we drank plenty of it.

VWL gave us a calendar of activities (tip: the utility panel in the studio is metal and makes a great place to post activity calendars and PS's with magnets. The entry door is wood). They had something planned each night, from cast choir, visiting bell choir, tree lighting (we missed this) and Santa on Christmas Eve.
The weather was not great and since this was not a must do or see anything trip (loosely planned to my standards) we just went with what we felt. Dh and the boys mostly felt DQ, I felt Christmas decorations and activities. Needless to say, we didnt spend much time in the parks. After MVMCP, we did one more day at MK and hopped that evening to EPCOT to see Illuminations and the awesome finale. Caught a glimpse of the CP but I will do that without kids. We spent 2 days at Blizzard Beach (one of which was rainy but warm and BB was empty). We also did 2 days at US/IOA.

My Ds's (5 and 7) and Dh love Disney Quest and it is their Theme Park of choice. Anyplace I can get cheesecake and internet access is high on my list too, so we spent alot of time at Disney Quest, including Christmas evening which had to be the most miserably cold and wet day out of the 16 we were there. DQ was very crowded that night.

Although it was cold most evenings, the pools were heated and the hot tubs were hot, so we usually took our evening dip and then visited the WL lobby so the boys could watch a few shorts on the big screen, before going to bed. We also started a new WDW nightly routine of having Hot Cocoa and popcorn before bed. (Ds's loved this)

As far as dining options at WL we had planned to eat at WC but we passed (although the dinner smelled very good when we walked thru the lobby at night) and the Roaring Forks didnt appeal to us and we will definitely try APoint in the future but didnt this trip.

Ds's I found to be very picky eaters and not really willing to try new things. Normally I can get them to eat a few bites but not at WDW prices so I prepared alot of meals in our studio to ensure they were eating properly. I really didnt mind and was amazed at the amount of variety I was able to come up with using the microwave and my early christmas gift the Mickey Waffle maker. (Loved Loved the Mickey Wafflemaker!) I did make 2 grocery runs to Target during our stay but that was the extent of my off site shopping which was a feat in itself! To think being at WDW during the busiest shopping season would save me money!

You mentioned that you guys drove. How was it? What route did you take? We are driving for the first time in March, and I'm trying to get a realistic idea on how long it will take and what route we should consider.

Trampslady yes we drove. Going was rough because we left at 3 pm after work and school so it was mostly driving at night. We did take extended rest stops, so we arrived the next day at 10 am. So about 20 hours.

We take 20E to Shreveport then 3132 to 12E to 49S to 10 to 75 to the Toll. I think Yahoo maps will give you this route. We did find some great rest stops and I made note of these for any future driving trips. We drive a Toyota Mini van so your mileage will vary, but definite stops are Marianna La. Nice clean McD's with a value menu and the gas was $1.59 last night. The other is Slidell La. again a nice McD's and cheaper gas (Shell). Gas prices ranged from $1.55 to $2.09 (87 grade) along the interstate so it pays to plan your stops. Also one place we stopped had dirty bathrooms so we got back in the car and kept driving to Marianna.

The drive back was nice with the same route and stops. We left SSR at 11am spent about an hour in holiday and bowl traffic but once we made it out of the city it cleared up. We arrived home this morning at 4 am so about 18 hours on the return with 4 stops for gas and breaks. Boys played video games, watched movies and slept. Dh and I switch off driving and I do better when it's light out.

Another Awesome tip I have is the 5 CD Disney Classic Collection. I bought it at DTD Virgin Megastore ($28) before we left and it was worth every penny! I loved driving to this and visualizing all the Disney entertainment we had seen on our trip. I think this improved the trip home immensely.

I would drive again for a 10 night stay or longer.

The VWL mercantile shop only has/had VHS for video check out. One evening we stopped by to pick up a package and the boys requested to pick out a movie as they had done on our June stay at BCV.

We took the Playstation 2 which plays DVD's. The CM said they only had VHS tapes available. The boys had spent alot of time choosing a movie so I thought I save someone else the frustration. You may want to ask first then look.

We put lights on our patio with a red bow. You could see it through the trees when you exited the main lobby to walk to the villas. Not many people decorated, but we went all out. We put a bow wreath on our villa door along with a decorated door hanger and Welcome Home Mat. We had the DIS christmas tree inside and the patio lit up outside. The boys really enjoyed it and had a wonderful Christmas morning just like at home.

At SSR, we were on the first floor but thanks to a suggestion on this board, I was prepared with suction cup thingy's to string the lights up on our patio window. They were colored lights and we could see them from outside of Disney Quest when we went to DTD!

HATED moving and without our vehicle, there would have been no way I would have handed all that stuff over to bell services! LOL I definitely need to pack lighter, but moving at WDW is the same reason I dont hire a domestic aid at home. I would have to clean up before they got here so what's the point? I would have really had to pack that stuff up neatly to have Bell Serv. store it and deliver it to SSR and that would have been difficult. As it was, we loosely packed, loaded it in the MV and moved ourselves. Dh said no more moving, but It wasnt so bad when it's just adults, but definitely not with small ones that cant pack up themselves.
Luckily this time, staying at both resorts for 10 and 6 nights we were able to unpack and make it semi worth it.

Another great tip: I used the shoe holder that hooks onto a door or rack at both VWL and SSR. I put our toiletries, first aid items, shaving cream, razors, etc in each pocket and hung it on the hook of the bathroom door at VWL and on the Towel rack over the commode at SSR. Great Space saver and easy access to all our smaller items. I bought mine at the $1 store for well......a dollar! LOL Ironically, I don't think it was made well enough to hold shoes, but toiletries it worked great!

Another Dollar store item that i could not live without especially in a studio are the collapsible pop up mesh hampers. They worked great for packing food items and gifts in the car on our trip to WDW and as a shoe basket and dirty clothes hamper/laundry basket. We used two (1 for shoes and one for dirty clothes) and they fit perfectly underneath the vanities at both VWL and SSR and freed up closet space for clothes and luggage. We will definitely take these on the cruise next year as they collapse down to the size of a small saucer. They do make more expensive versions of these that are more durable, but the $1 ones worked fine and I keep a stash of them on hand for trips.

I know I need to update the DVC watch thread and that is on my list of things to do in the new year! LOL I did ask at BCV and they were completely sold out. It is still a mystery as to where #500 to 1000 went. It's a small world after all and we had Dissers purchase theirs from every location at different times, ArnyVee kept "watch" on Ebay and we sorted the watch #'s numerically and nothing over 500! I really like my watch but I needed to have 2 links taken out, so I carried it around for 2 weeks and finally on NYE I stopped in Keystone at MGM and a very nice CM took the links out for me. Not anyone can do it, because it is a jeweler skill so they don't always have someone available. Later we visited DTD WOD store and Dh had his adjusted at the watch counter since he wasnt with me earlier. OBTW, Disney at Home store is closing effective 1/3/05 to make way for yet another candy store :rolleyes: I like my sweets, but It seems to me that food should not be the major attraction and should complement the attractions. It's easy money though, like taking candy from a baby! LOL

I did purchase the latest DVC Pin at BCV (Epcot) and they even had some special BCV pins too!

Liferbabe, I have enjoyed reading all of your reports about your trip. I would love to do Disney for 16 days. I'd even do it with all three of my kids(one under 3 of course!) in a studio, if DH could take that much time off work. We are going to be so points poor after this next trip in Feb., I don't know when we'll be back. We are getting a 2 bed. at SSR to share with my parents, and SIL. Needless to say we are borrowed to the max into '06 already.:(I really need more points) We'll staying at SSR this trip, but I'm really missing VWL. Sounds like you all had a great time at both places. I've got one of those dollar store shoe hangers, I'll have to find some mesh pop ups. I think those would work great, and we are driving so I could just throw them in the car on the return trip. When you say $1 store, are you talking about a Dollar Tree, Dollar General, or some other $1 store? I might need to go look for some of those soon! Thanks for the report!

I love Dollar Tree, but I think I found the mesh hampers at the mom and pop dollar store that is close to my home. I've seen them several places but the prices range from $1 for the cheapies (what I use) to $12 for the kind that have licensed characters on them. They are all the same size so they will still fit under the vanities of the studios. There is actually room for 3 of them under there, but we used 2 and the wastebasket.
We also used 1 for swim gear, goggles, water shoes, floaties etc and kept that in the closet. They are great because they hold alot and take up very little sq. footage.

Another tip: I kept my wash tablets and fabric sheets in a ziploc bag in the bottom of the hamper. That way when it was time to wash, everything was already in the hamper ready to go.

I could write a book on hampers! LOL

OK I know this can be a controversial subject, but I just have to share! LOL
I used the Mickey Wafflemaker I purchased (Christmas gift from the boys) from Amazon during our studio stay. It actually worked out to be more than a wafflemaker and it's compact size was perfect for the kitchenette area. I used it to make waffles, hot dogs, hot sandwiches, quesadillas, scrambled eggs. They were selling this exact same wafflemaker at all the Resort gift shops and Disney At Home for $69, Amazon has it for $33! It's basically a mickey shaped contact grill and what better place to have mickey shaped sandwiches, waffles and eggs than WDW! It didnt smoke, start fires and I didnt grill Tuna on it for those who are concerned about the smell! LOL It was easy to clean (didnt use any nonstick spray) and stores upright.

The boys loved the Mickey Waffles (I used Krusteaz Complete Mix just add water) and liked them better than the ones they had at Chef Mickey's on Christmas Eve. My 7 yr. old even recommended I start selling them but I don't think I'd be too successful making 1 Mickey Waffle at a time! LOL
I know some prefer not to cook on vacation, but my boys actually requested to eat in on several occasions, because they don't like alot of fried foods or french fries. They like their food simple and not touching so we did much better feeding them at "home"

The refrigerator at VWL held more than the one at SSR and the freezer section was much smaller at SSR, but since we stayed there second, I didnt have as much to store and we used our cooler for soda's and juice at SSR.


We also used 12 meal vouchers and ate 3 times at Beaches and Cream with them. Also used them at Coronado Springs Pepper Market on our Blizzard Beach days. We ate once at AK RFC with 2 leftover Lunch Vouchers we had and used our DVC discount at Disney Quest FoodQuest (Cheesecake Factory) which has the best pizza ever. We always ordered the whole pizza and took the leftovers back to our room. You even get the 10% discount on refills.
The desserts are great there and I loved the chocolate cake.

Loved Earl of Sandwich and that is a great value! Dh really liked the sandwiches and I liked the side salads and cole slaw as well as the sandwiches. We ate here 3 times.

NYE I drove over to Pop Century food court and picked up milkshakes for the boys, an ice cream sundae for Dh and I and some donuts for the trip home. I really liked their food court and their grocery item prices were more reasonable. They have different stations with a variety of food.

SSR is similar in concept but they only have one station which is the bulk of the complaints about Artist Pallette. We didnt eat at AP this trip, because we spent so much time at DTD, but what I have tried, has always been really good.

Our only meal offsite was at Le Peep on our arrival day. I had a restaurant.com certificate and we were waiting for our room at VWL so we went to Le Peep for breakfast. Its on Kirkman Rd. and the breakfast was good, and the service was excellent. I would eat there without a certificate, so Im glad we tried it. We have one here in Arlington, but we never tried it.

:D I bought the mickey egg molds last time I was there! I tried to do pancakes with them, they didn't turn our too well. I haven't even tried to do eggs yet. I need to dig them out, and give them a whirl. I too love my mickey waffler, but its in pitiful shape. I dropped it last year, and half the plastic cracked off it, so it sits crooked on the counter top. Oh well, it still works!

Since the boys were so concerned about Santa finding them at WDW, I made it a point to leave little gifts for them in the room and in the van before and after Christmas. Santa Claus delivers the Christmas gifts on Christmas Eve, but Santa Mickey gives out little extras for being brotherly and good while at WDW. :D

So they received little bags of candy, video games, and DVD's from Santa Mickey.

On Christmas morning (the rainy cold morning) I made Mickey Waffles and the boys and DH opened their gifts.(My gift was 16 days of cooperation and the Mickey Wafflemaker and oh yeah a Pave Mickey Watch I found at WOD :D ) Since we drove, I was able to bring all the gifts wrapped. We took some great photos that morning and we really enjoyed it.

Stayed in most of the day and played games and watched movies as it was pouring rain. Later that evening we went to DQ until close.

It was really cute that they made wishes during the trip (telling me so I could relay to Santa Mickey) and Santa Mickey delivered their wish! LOL Towards the end of the trip, I told the boys it was almost time to go home and my 5 year old said Uh-uh, I wished for 5 more days! (Not with the points we have left!)

One other funny quote from my 5 year old: "momma, where's our room?" when we checked into the studio at SSR! LOL But they are not spoiled :love:

The 26th, I headed over to SSR at 8 am to check in early. Our room was ready! My last night (the 31st) was not linked to my ressie (It was a 3 part ressie), so my keys had to be re-cut after the helpful CM had a supervisor link them. Check in at SSR is slower but I find them to be very thorough and go over everything with you moreso than just being slow, so part of me appreciates the attentive service.

Went back to VWL, packed up and arrived back at Congress Park around 11:30 a.m.

Having stayed in a SSR studio twice before sans kids, initially I was disappointed in the smaller appearance and lack of storage in the studio compared to VWL. VWL was the first DVC studio we stayed in as a party of 4. SSR has a larger entryway, so that is where the extra space went as opposed to it being in the Living area side of the studio @ VWL. The fridge was smaller too.

That said, it didnt take long for me to get over it! We really loved SSR as a family! Ds's and Dh immediately noted that the TV was larger! LOL and the boys even noticed the pull-out sofa was much more comfy than the one they had spent 10 nights on at VWL. So where I was looking at storage (did I mention I overpacked?) their priority was TV and a comfortable nights sleep!
(Men!)

We had an awesome view of DTD and the lake. The weather improved and there was all kinds of activity going on. We watched people on morning fishing Excursions catch bass, hold them up for a photo and release them right from our patio. There was the Ferry filled with passengers from OKW and SSR going back and forth to DTD, the water mice (although they appeared really slow) Surrey bikes, etc.

Dh played basketball one morning with a group of guys on the outdoor court and I took several morning jogs on the SSR path thru DTD Marketplace and completed the circle passing the Westside and ending at the SSR Spa/Fitness Center. The fitness center is WONDERFUL! It really is first class. In the lounge there was fresh fruit and ice water. There are plenty of cardio machines, treadmills, ellipticals, steppers, bikes and weights. They even had a variety of fitness tubing, steps, balance boards and balls. Everything was new and shiny. I kept intending to bring my swimsuit to soak in the spa after my workout, but I kept forgetting.

I loved being in DTD early and see it waking up. It would be hard for me to choose between the Boardwalk Loop and the DTD Loop at SSR.

The Laundry at the quiet pool was convenient, because the boys liked playing on the Victorian playground alot. They also liked the quiet pool and spa. All the water features and fountains really make that area feel like a garden.

We spent alot of time at DTD and actually had time to visit some of the shops and booths. Our last day we had silohuettes made of the boys in front of Dis at Home store and I thought that was amazing that the artist could capture their image freehand with a pair of scissors! They turned out great and I hung them in our entry at home in Texas. Dh purchased the Plumerias we failed to get at the F&W fest in October when we visited for the wedding.

Our last day NYE we walked over to do all our last minute shopping so I thought that was extremely convenient!

Once Dh realized how convenient it was to walk to DTD (He would drive to the kitchen from our bedroom) he really enjoyed walking and even suggested we walk so we didnt use our van much or take the ferry.

SSR really felt like home and I can't say enough about the gorgeous landscaping. We would walk, look at the pretty plants and talk about what we wanted to put in our yard. Ds's liked the fact that it was so close to Disney Quest.

We did visit the main pool and the Donald Play fountain area was working. Both my Ds's really liked standing underneath the waterfall and the stream of water that spouted out. This pool is no smaller than any of the other main DVC Resort pools with the exception of SAB, so I'm not worried about overcrowding.

We had a great no/WONDERFUL trip, Im glad we got to visit VWL during the holidays and though I hated moving, Im glad we got to experience SSR this trip too. I am thrilled with our SSR add-ons and can see us spending many a great vacation there. We are definitely partial to BCV for SAB, SSR for the location and over-all look and feel. From now on we will stay based on proximity to what we like to do on vacation.

I thought it was neat as we sat on our patio watching the DTD NYE Fireworks that I was at SSR for it's Grand Opening Member homecoming in May 2004 and its very first New Years Eves Celebration. 2004 was a great year!

What a fantastic trip for you and your family.

Thank you so much for sharing so many details and ideas with the rest of us. I am still learning how to travel with my 2 and 4 year old boys, and clutter has always been a MAJOR issue, but you have just solved my two biggest gripes from our Nov trip - bathroom counter clutter and dirty clothes! Yeah!

Also, I am glad to hear wonderful things where you acknowledge for example that check might have taken longer at SSR, but that it was because they are more thorough. Yours is the first report that I have ever read where the joy of being together with your family in a wonderful place came through in all your words!

We were at SSR at the same time! We had a 2 night stay from Dec 30th in a 2br. It was our first trip home and we had the most amazing time. We loved the easy walk to DTD and the look and feel of SSR.
