We will be checking into OKW next Sun. Can we prepay a certain amount with our traveler's checks and then have our meals and such charged to this account? We are trying to avoid the use of cash as much as possible in the parks and also would prefer not using our charge cards. I remember reading some posts about this at some of the resorts but was not sure if it applied to DVC.

when you check-in they ask if you want charge priviliges on your room key .then you can use your room key as cash everywhere. hope this helps.dave

WE usually do the room key chargeing priveledges, but usually only have it on our own keys and not guests.

This is what we did this past May as we wanted to pay cash for our meals and not credit card. We secured our spending which is a $1500. limit with our credit card on your room then we went to front desk twice in our stay and paid the bill in cash. Make sure you go and pay the night before you check out otherwise they will charge your credit card especially if you have express check out. Have fun!:)

BTW, the final bill will come itemized for each room key. If you allow your guests to charge on the room you can easily determine how much each person owes.
If you're going to have others use your room charge make sure you note who has what room key number so you can tie the expense back to the correct person. Even if you don't pay every day you should just ask for a printout of your charges so you can see how things are going. Last May I took a bunch of family along and my 'free' room ended up with a $1,425 charge for 4 days (boy, those pool drinks are expensive!).

When you charge meals to your room key do they automatically add a gratuity or do you specify the gratuity?

Gratuities at WDW restaurants is up to the diner- it is not automatically added- except for large groups.
With the room ID- you will be given a charge slip and they will ask you to "total" the bill and sign. You may then add an appropriate tip and total the bill yourself.
The room ID relly simplifies what you need to carry. You can guarantee the payment with a credit card or prepay with cash or travelers checks.
Enjoy!

Almost all of the restaurants automatically add a gratuity if you're a party of 8 or more.
Any less, and you will add the gratuity yourself.
