Hi everyone:
Starting on Wed, August 1st, Sky Eson will begin answering questions and offering advice each week on getting in shape, and eating healthier. So, each week we'll start a thread for that week, where questions or comments can be posted for Sky.
Now, I can tell you all this: I've been working with Sky for almost a month now, and the difference in me (and in John) is nothing short of miraculous. This woman ACTUALLY got me to eat vegetables, and LIKE IT!! Now, that may not mean anything to you, but if you knew me, and knew just how much I despise vegetables, you would understand how major this is.
What I like most about working with her is that she completely practices what she preaches and there is nothing to "buy". Of course, I pay her as my personal trainer, but she's not out there hawking vitamins, energy bars, weight loss books or anything else. She's in it because she loves it, and it shows!!
So, let's hear what you have to say. If you have a question or problem, go ahead and post it. Maybe share a little about what you're doing right now to get in shape, or what's keeping you from getting motivated. Sky will start posting this Wednesday, August 1st.
Enjoy!!!

I have LOTS of questions but I'll just start slow! :D
Motivation to work out..........How do you find it AND keep it?
What sort of workout pattern do you feel is best for losing weight? (ie aerobic exercise only, strength training, combination, etc?)
If I am considering finding a personal trainer in my area, what are some key elements I should look for?

How did you get Pete to eat vegetables? :)
Congratulations, Pete. I think it's wonderful that you're so motivated to do this. I totally lack motivation. Nikole, I know exactly what you mean! Yet, I do aerobic dance 3 mornings a week. I don't loose anything, but I really don't gain and I eat without thinking all the time! I need motivation & guidance! Will we be able to get some favorite, simple to fix recipes, too? Thanks!

Me too, motivation is the tough one. I usually do really great for about 2-3 weeks, then I loose my ability to stay focussed on the goal. Exercise isn't the problem, it is eating that is difficult to control. Any suggestions? Thanks Sky, I really appreciate you helping us out!

OK, second question, (I have so many, I will have to space them out for each Wednesday!:) ). I love McDonald's and potato chips. I try to eat them in moderation, but lets just say no potato chip within 1 mile of me is safe! How do I control the intense craving for them? I have tried giving them up entirely, but that didn't work, moderation always starts out ok, but that doesn't last past the bag opening. I feel like I sound like a pathetic fool with no will power, but this has plagued me for a long time... how do you turn off these cravings and want to eat healthy veggies etc? Thanks again!

Can Sky offer some simple exercises that I can do while I’m working on my computer? Since I seem to surf the Dis so very late at night (after working all day), any simple things that I could do while surfing the net would certainly be better than nothing.

I taught a dance aerobics class for 10 years and quit last fall. I attended classes but they ended in June and I have found myself with little time (or motivation) to exercise. Like many before me have asked how do I motivate myself? I, too, spend a lot of time at the computer for my job :) and have recently put on about 10 lbs. I know I have to get up and move but just can't bring myself to do it.
I know I am not eating healthy either, any tips?
Help! please. :)

Like many others, I have hypothyroidism, so my metabolism is not burning the calories like it use to. What types of foods should I be eating more of/less of? [I am working on less carbohydrates right now, but my weight has not changed].
Welcome to The Dis!
Judging from the typical person I see strolling through WDW, we can all use some "get fit" advice!!!

To be quiet frank, I am a very lazy person at home. While at work, I'll work six 12-15 hours nights in a row.
I never exercise and it shows.
I did go through the one year, hospital based weight reduction program, but my heart was not in it.
Now I'm on the Adkin's diet and feeling much better than when I wasn't on it. I'm not perfect.
I have access to my condo's treadmill, but it has been so disappointing to get out of breath and start dragging my right leg behind me.
I guess that I just need to suck it up and keep going until I almost lose my balance and fall. But if I can increase time or distance every day or week then that is better than nothing.
I have no excuse. I'm just lazy.
But I do look forward to reading your comments.
Thank you for doing this for us.
Sincerely, Ray:)

Ohhhh!!! I wanna know about the vegetables, too!!!!! I puke at the mere thought of eating them!!!!! Let me know the secret!! I am also hypothyroid. Started on meds in December and have lost 10 pounds since then, so that is my boost. Now, if I can just get my butt into an exercise routine, I might be a little bit better off!

Sky, what are your thoughts on the fat burner pills and powders that are being sold to help lose weight? Do you know whether these can help reduce weight and if they can be used to help while exercising?

I am VERY interested in getting fit, escpecially as it pertains to an upcoming
WDW vacation. We all know that a tour around the "world" can be gruelling
and exhuasting, so any help would be great.
I have been dieting for 4 years now in order to take off about 120 lbs. So far, I've
taken off about 60 of it. However, it's become tiresome, boring and frustrating. Especially
as I near the 200 lb mark. I've been there three times now, only to sit where I'm at, not
losing anything and pop right back up. My body does NOT wanna be lower than 200 as much I
I DO! I've tried my own calorie counting, Weight Watchers, more exercise, different combos of exercise...nothing seems to help. I was on a plateau for almost a whole YEAR! Have been to my doc again and again. Currently, I'm back to counting the calories/fat, and am just beginning a half hour on my recumbant bike everyday along with resistance bands every other day. I'm hoping this "magical" combo will work. My goal is to have most of this off by my trip to WDW on Nov. 29th and to, of course, be fit enough to sail through my tour with ease. What do you suggest for someone over 200lbs as a means of getting fit and loosing weight?

Sky,
What are your thoughts about "food combining"?
Or reducing the amount of fat in one's diet vs. reducing the amount of carbohydrates?
Thanks very much for your time!

Hi Sky,
Welcome to the DIS! And thanks!
I am a former collegiate swimmer and lifeguard (all thru high school and college). Now, 10 years and one baby later, I cannot even comprehend getting into a bathing suit. I am also a complete klutz unless I am in the water. Any suggestions to get started? I know walking, but by myself it gets boring, and the motivation is just not there. Swimming would be great, but not for the first big chunk of weight I need to lose, the lack of resistance really does not lend itself to big weight loss. So...any other suggestions?
Thanks

I would really like to know about the vegetables. How did you get Pete to eat them... and like them? I cannot stand most vegetables. I like green beans and that is about it. I am overweight, have high blood pressure, and all the other problems that are associated. One of my basic problems with all good diets (not diet progams, but healthy diets) is the vegetables. Now if I could get a personal trainer too, that would _really_ help.
Thanks in advance!

Hey Sky!!
I too would like to know your opinion on diet!! I work out 5 times a week 30 to 40 minutes cardio then twice a week weights!! (I am afraid of bulking up I know I know being a woman its hard to bulk up but I still am afraid) I am not overweight Im 5'3 112 But I still have more weight around the middle and the hips!! (boy do I hate that chunk!!) So Im thinking I must need to change my diet but Im so confused on what I should eat!! Or do you think I should add more Cardio?? Or do you think I should just make what Im doing more intense?? Do you think I should do longer or harder???
I am confused with the whole no carbs and lots orf carb diets, Should I watch my carbs?? I would love also some new ideas for ab work!! Thank you thanks you!! Im ery excited about this new board!! Motivation!!!! :):)

Sky: First thank you so much.
What is a reasonable weight? Meaining is the height weight charts, are they realistic?
Having a medium bone structure, I am on the chart.. but to me they do seem unrealistic.
I like to eat healthy, I do enjoy exercise, but dont have the motivation I once had.
Is there something to help the motivation end? What is your opinion of Xenadrine or similiar products?

Hi,
Five years ago I was an overweight smoker. I FINALLY quit smoking after 17 years! YIPPY! But of course packed on more weight to my already overweight body. I peaked at 210 lbs, I am 5'6" tall with a medium frame. I always exercised, but my calorie intake was way more than what I burned. I finally got motivated and started to educate myself on fitness/food. I lost over 80 lbs (from size 22 to size 4). As a result of my weight loss and love for fitness, I became an aerobics instructor. When I was pregnant with my second child ( he's 18 months now), I started yoga practice. I had been in and out of yoga for years, but this time it stuck. I completed my training and now I teach yoga as well as step, toning, hi/lo aerobics. I love it! THING IS, during my last pregnancy I gained a lot of weight. I lost most, but I am battling with the last 10 pounds. I know it's not a lot on the scale of things, (I mean what's 10 lbs after losing over 80 pounds) but I've lost my motivation. I still exercise a lot, I've even completed one triathlon and I will be competing in my second triathlon this September (No, not the one at WDW Sept 16). BUT I CAN'T STAY AWAY FROM THE HIGH FAT BAD BAD BAD CALORIES! I think this new board is EXACTLY what I, and others like me, REALLY NEED to get motivated! Thanks for thinking about us!

Ok I have a question for Sky.
I have low back problems and whenever I walk WDW or DL after 30 minutes to an hour later my lower back is in pain. According to my DH I am walking like a pregnant women due to my stomach and my back muscles needs to be strengthened. Right now I am on the torso track which strenghtens my back, stomach, arms, and legs and I am doing this 5 days a week and 3 sets of 50 and 3 days a week I am on the treadmill 20-24 minutes. Also how long does it normally take to strenghten my back? I have been doing this for about a month and I am going to DL in September and I want this situation cleared up prior to our trip.
Is there anything else you would recommend for me to get inshape. I know not to go on a diet (I work for a famous spa in Tucson AZ) and I should get into low calarie and low fat and to just cut down on what I am eating (cut out on all the sweets and get alittle healthyer).
Thank you
Cindy

Welcome tho the Dis Sky and thanks for taking the time to come and help us out!
My question is about weights. What is a good number of reps to be doing? Should I be feeling a burn or is this working the muscle too hard? Also, is there ANY exercise that will help flatten the abs?

Sky, I think you are a Godsend. ;) Boy do I ever have alot of questions for you.
OK.. here is some background. I started a lifestyle change..not a diet last September. It really was a true lifestyle change. I went from being very sedetary to now being fairly active. I watch what I eat very carefully. I eat very low fat and as low calorie as I can stand it. I do not totally deprive myself of treats..but they are VERY limited. Not only have I gotten a grip on what and why and how I eat, but I started excersizing 6 days a week. I started out doing a half hour aerobics tape. That worked miracles for about 6 months..then it just wasn't enough for my body any longer. So, I switched to an hour long aerobics tape. I lost a total of 68 pounds. :D I still have just over 40 pounds to go...but that tape (even the hour long one) just wasn't doing the trick anymore. A few weeks ago I purchased a treadmill. I get on the evil torture device ;) 6 days a week. I walk at a pace of 3.7 miles an hour (after a 5 minute warmup) for an hour. I walk just over 3.5 miles and burn around 450-460 calories. This week I started to lift free weights with my DH every other evening too. My calorie intake has NOT gone up. My activity level has increased, but I haven't lost any more weight. As a matter of fact I have only lost 25 pounds since New Years. I am getting so incredibly frustrated. It is so hard to work out and push myself as hard as I do day after day and not see that darn scale moving downwards again.
I am VERY motivated to stick with it. I never want to go back to the way I used to be..but I do want to progress. Do you have any thoughts, advice or ideas that I can try to get the ball rolling again? Please!! I am seriously getting desperate here.:(

Hi Sky,
My sister and I used to be big American Gladiators fans and watch the show in our dance recital leotards, LOL! I was a little chunky then and I still am! But I lost 16 pounds on WW over the last 4 months. My problem is this: after I eat a meal, I spend the next 15 mins. on the lookout for more food. It's as if I can't get my brain to turn off. If I'm at home, I eat dinner and then I munch - a handful of this, a handful of that - literally until I leave the house! It has nothing to do with hunger, I just really want to keep eating. I have to leave the house (ie the kitchen) to get this feeling to stop. It happens at work, too. But 15 minutes later, the feeling has passed and I'll go a normal amount of time before my next meal. Do you have any advice for me? Why does this happen to me?

Hi everyone!
WOW!, It seems that motivation is the big issue this week!So let's get started!. BarbForReal, Ray Sharpton, Nickole, Debster812, SandraC,webmasterCathyCanada, PrincessVija >when it comes to health and exercise, all of you are dealing with lack of motivation. Most of the time when someone speaks of motivation, what they are really saying is "What's my pay off?" Trust me when I say the pay off is more than just losing a few pounds!. How about:
Less illness - better overall health
Weight loss
Improved muscle tone
Greater happiness
More enthusiasm and confidence
More productive and disciplined life
More mentally alert
Lower stress levels
Higher self esteem!!
Need I say more? It takes less than 30 days to change your health and fitness habits.

Hi "Sky" Eason-Korito,
Welcome to the DIS and thank you for your help. I just found all your information on the home page of the DIS at:
http://www.wdwinfo.com/fit/080101.shtmlA
I'm going to have to start drinking more water. Like a little more than 20 cups per day.
I like your idea about walking and adding one minute each day. I'm going to use a treadmill to start.
And your motivation reasons are all great. as a matter of fact, I'm going to print it up right now.
I'm looking forward to working with weight training, too.
Thank you, Ray :)

I also can’t get motivated to get back into shape. I was in top physical condition in HS and College and right up until my first year of marriage. Then all of a sudden I lost interest in staying in shape. I did attempt to get back into it when my first son was born; I joined Nutri system and lost 60 pounds. I have since gained some of it back.
I am going to follow your advice and I am determined to get my “Arnold” body back.
Thank you for helping us DISer’s get in shape.

My husband and I are trying to get pregnant :D but I don't want to lose control of my eating habits. I try to walk on my treadmill at least 4 times a week for 20 - 30 minutes at a time. Is it safe to lift weights (5 lbs.) if I'm pregnant? And once I'm in WDW, what precautions should I take with regards to walking SO much around the theme parks? We're going in October (3 days) and December (8 days). Also, can you recommend any sites that outline a healthy diet and exercise program for a mom-to-be? Thanks so much!
I know what everyone means about being motivated. I bought one of those eliptical machines...says just 20 mins. 3 times a week..but i can only stay on it a bout 5 minutes. I know i have to build up to it...but it is very frustrating.

Here's a walking program that I'm trying to follow:
http://www.bcbsri.com/walkri/schedule.htm
Typically, motivation is tough, but I'm trying.
My question:
Sky...does drinking all that water ever get better, as far as not having to run to the bathroom every two minutes?? Every so often I get on a water drinking kick, but it gets very disruptive when finding a bathroom becomes my focus everywhere I go. And God forbid I don't get my walk in in the morning! I don't dare go after drinking water all day!

Dear NickGlover and Alemanke
This is concerning your questions regarding hypothyroidism. First and foremost before you read any further, remember I am not a doctor! Before starting any health or fitness program it is very important to consult your doctor.
The Thyroid gland hormones affect every cell of the body. Hypothyroidism, low thyroid, results in a large number of symptoms. Common symptoms are mental depression, muscle weakness, fatigue, poor memory, headaches, goiter, unexplained weight gain, swelling, just to name a few.
Proper nutrition is the best way to keep hypothyroidism in check. Here is a healthy basic nutrition outline to follow ( even though, I have no thyroid or any other health issue to deal with, this is basically the nutritional guidelines that I choose to follow):
* Follow a 75% fresh fruit and vegetable diet to rebalance metabolism
* Have a green salad twice a day
*Fresh fruit especially in the morning hours
* Avoid Chlorine as it depletes vitamin A
*Eat plenty of iodine rich foods such as sea vegetables, sea foods, fish, mushrooms, garlic,
onions, watercress
*Choose whole grains and brown rice
*Eat Vitamin A rich foods such as yellow vegetables, eggs, carrots, dark green
vegetables, raw dairy,
*Use herb salt instead of table salt
*Increase your intake of B6 rich foods suchs as free range chicken and eggs, carrots,
Beans, brown rice, corn,cantaloupe
*Remember raw carrots - the fiber tones the bowel, binds toxins (including carcinogens)
reduces the reaborption of estrogens and lowers cholestrol if high
*It's important to get adequate protein. Free range and organic chicken and eggs, halibut,
and white fish, organic, raw or cultured milk product such as low fat sugar free
yogurt and low fat cottage cheese
*Eat foods high in natural fiber
*Eat small meals frequently throughout the day to keep blood sugar levels
balanced
*Exercise everyday to work off unmetabolized acid waste.
AVOID:
*Avoid polyunsaturated fats (thyroid toxins and inhibitors) including soybean,
salflower, canola, Flaxseed, (use olive oil)
*Avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates, whole fat dairy foods, fried and fatty foods,
pastries, prepared meats, and saturated fats. Eliminate refined foods, caffeine,
preserved foods and red meat permanently
*Avoid "GOITROGENS" foods that prevent the use of iodine. Brussels sprouts,
turnips, liver, pine nuts, mallet, soy products.
I sure hope this helps you. Best wishes!

Hi Again!!
PATS> I realize you feel 5 minutes a day on your eliptical isn't much BUT, it's alot more than 85% of the american public does on a daily bases!! Hey! BE PROUD !! it's a start! make a goal of adding just one minute a day or every other day and you'll be up to 30 minutes before you know it!. Keep in touch and let me know how it's going.
MaryannDc> I realize that frequent trips to the bathroom isn't very fun..BUT..that's the way your body flushes out toxins. Nomally when you began to increase your fuild it takes your body about 3 to 4 weeks to ajust to the positive changes. So hang in there, the benefits far out way the inconvenience of TEMPORARY frequent toliet trips

It's great to see that you love what you do and are willing to share. Pete gives you the highest of recommendations so that's good enough for me.
A little history on me: I was grossly overweight when an embarrassing situation occured. I went on an amusement ride with my daughter and the restraint bar wouldn't click. I was, to say the least, humiliated. I promised my daughter that I would go on that ride with her next year. At that time I was 6'1" and 365 lbs. On December 18th of 2000, I started my lifestyle change and have since fallen into a routine.
I do at least 45 minutes of cardio (usually on an EFX Precor or my favorite Rebok Body Trek) Then I do some light weight training usually involving curls, chest press, tricep kickbacks, ab crunches and butterflys.
My food intake has changed dramatically also. I still do not eat a breakfast (I've never been a breakfast eater) At about 10 or 11 am I have 2 or 3 pieces of fruit. I workout in my gym at work around 1 PM or so. I get home at about 5 PM and have a rather large salad. (This time of year is great because I have my own garden and the veggies are all mine) I use non-fat salad dressings but I don't normally watch the calories. Oh yeah, I drink tons of water too.
As snacks I have either pretzles, low-fat popcorn, sherbert (1 gram fat 110 cal per serving), red licorice, rice cakes all depending on if I want something sweet or salty. Moderation seems to be the key. I also get a chanch to go to the YMCA 2 or 3 times a week where I do 30 minutes of cardio and the same weight training. I do treat myself on occasion after I have completed one of my many short term goals.
All told, I have lost 130 lbs so now I'm at 235. I went on that ride with my daughter this summer and that restraint system clicked down 4 times.
Now my questions: I seem to be at that plateau where I'm not moving either way. I would like to try to increase my weight training and start to build up more muscle but I know I have to keep my cardio in place. What do you think would be a next step in starting that process? Should I look to change my diet to compensate for building muscle? If a diet change is recommended, will this affect my cardio routine (increase or decrease)? If I do start weight training, are there any supplements/vitamins that I should look into taking? Thanks for taking the time to respond to our questions. I'll await your reply.

When I went to DisneyWorld in 1998, someone on one of the Disney Message boards, had created a map of Disney Property with the miles mapped out. After getting a new computer I lost the map. It started at one of the resorts, then went to each one of the theme parks. I used it as motivation to get in shape before I went. Every day I would walk, then color in on the map how far I went. It was my goal to walk around Disney before I actually went. I think it was about 60 miles total. I ended up walking around Disney & back & losing 15 pounds in the process! I would love to get a copy of that map again if anyone knows what I'm talking about or can figure out how to make a new one.

Hi Sky,
Welcome!
What ideas do you have for someone who is very overweight, not getting very much exercise
at this time and planning a trip to WDW for 2 weeks. In the past, trips to WDW have been painfull, lots of walking, not much time to rest, it seems all my exercise gets done in one trip to WDW. How would you suggest to get prepared for this trip. My complaints are usually about my lower legs and feet, the muscle in my lower legs seem to become frozen almost to the point of not being able to move or flex my feet, the painis in the out sides of my legs, not the calf muscles (sorry I don't know the correct terms). Taking my only chance to get a break for 1/2 hour for lunch or dinner the pain is releived, but then the moment the walking starts so does the pain, Advil every day and night has been my solution.
Thank You In Advance!

Thanks Sky!!!
Your tips on motivation are just what I needed to hear! Just like Ray, I printed it out immediately and am going to put it on my fridge door, and in the bathroom! thanks for your help!
My next question. I work out at home with aerobic video tapes. I also have some toning/weight tapes. What would be the recomendation on how much aerobics vs weight tapes to do? Switch off every other day? I work 12 hour shifts every weekend with a 1 hour commute time, and it is difficult to work in work out time. I am a nurse, so I walk quite a bit at work. Is working out Mon-Fri enough, and what would the recommendation be to balance aerobics and weight/toning tapes? Thanks

I Hope everyone is doing well !!
Let's get started,
Scanne> Congrats on your "MOM TO BE" decision. As a mother of two beautiful girls, It's the best job in the world!!. First of all, consult your doctor before making any changes in your health or fitness.
"Mom's to be" nutrition:
*Eat a high vegetable protein diet, with plenty of whole grains, seeds and sprouts, with
fish or seafood at least twice a week. Have a fresh fruit and fresh green salad every
day. Eat plenty of soluble fiber foods like whole grain cereal and vegetables. Eat
complex foods like broccoli and brown rice for strenght.
*Drink plenty of water and fresh juice ( only Juice you've made yourself, NOT store
bought) daily to keep your system flowing
*Eat folacin rich foods, such as spinach and asparagus for disease resistance
*Eat carotene rich foods, such as carrots, squashes, tomatoes, yams and broccoli
*Eat zinc rich foods, such as pumpkin and sesame seeds for good body formation
*Eat vitamin C foods, such as broccoli and bell peppers and fruits for connective tissue
*Eat bioflavonoid-rich foods, such as citrus fruits and berries for capillary integrity
*Eat alkalizing foods, such as Miso soup and brown rice to neutralize toxemia
*Eat mineral-rich foods, such as sea vegetables, leafy greens, whole grains for baby
building
*Have a good protein drink several times a week for optimal growth and energy.
*Eat small frequent meals instead of large meals
*Do not skip breakfast
With regards to exercise ABSOLUTELY !!. Walking and weight training are excellent! Consult your doctor first, THEN...a personal trainer for weight training tips. Best of luck!
Janet2k > Computer exercises ?? Great idea.....BUT, not very effective unless you strap your computer to the handlebars of a stationary bike. The great news is you have 168 hours in a week and getting in great shape only requires using 3 1/2 hours of that time to create a super 30 minute a day walking program! Come on! you deserve it !
Kelsie > I would love to help you. I would need some additional information, so that I know what you're up against. I look forward to hearing from you!
Iaswrider > Food combining is wonderful!! and yes, I do practice proper food combining everyday, except when I have a weakness for sushi, which is twice a week. Food combining is
based on the principles that certain combinations of foods may be digested more efficiency than others. Energy is the key, and nothing streamlines the digestive process, which energizes the body, more than proper food combining. Nearly two thirds of the population is overweight. A great deal of this can be attributed the improper food combining. It's worth lerning more about! With regards to reducing fat or carbs??...My answer is to reduce or eliminate processed foods and avoid using microwave ovens which distroy all nutritional value. Fresh and natural is best!!
SandraC and PrinessVija > Ahhh....Avoiding those "bad for you" cravings! I guess "Just say no!" won't work? Just kidding.....What I find works the best for me (and my clients) is to take ENZYMES between meals. It's all natural and good for you. When taken 20 minutes before a meal it helps with the digestion of your food and when taken in between meals it acts as a wonderful all natural appetite suppressant. ENZYMES can be found in any health food or supplement store. Be sure to buy a full spectrum enzymes product containing Protease, amylase, lipsase all of which are from fruits and vegetables. Take care!
Hi, sky! Glad to "see" you here on the DIS! My question is not a nutrition question, but rather a fitness question: I suffered a major ankle injury 7 years ago (all ligaments and tendons were torn plus a fracture of the bone) in a soccer game. Being an athlete and anxious to return to the game, I started putting weight on it too early, and it has never healed properly. It seems that no matter how much "pre-WDW training" I do (I start walking 30 minutes every other day between 4-6 weeks before my trip), no matter what type of shoes or brace I wear, at the end of the day in WDW, my ankle is still sore and swollen. Any suggestions?
Nikole

Hi Sky!
More questions!
Can you explain more about food combining and how to use it. Or a place to read up on it.
What do you think of the high protein diets that are very popular right now. They do seem to work and work well for some people?
Can you tell me the best way to treat/heal plantars fascitis. (I haven't been to a Dr. but listed my symptoms and researched it. The best therapy it appeared was for some rest and stretching.) How long does it take to heal?

If I only have time to walk 20 minutes a day (I work 40 plus hours a week) ...
would that still get my legs into shape to walk around WDW ?

Hope everyone is doing well and on track!
Let's begin
Big Dude > Congratulations!! it sounds like you are doing a great job!. One suggestion I
have for you would be to avoid the pretzels and any other highly processed food.
I realize that everyone gets confused over the fact that pretzels have no fat in them and you would think that would make them an excellent diet food...but ...pretzels are a highly processed food with very little nutritional value, your body would much rather store pretzels as bodyfat than to deplete it's enzymes storages trying to use them as energy. Fresh fruit and veggies make excellent snack food choices and help to replenish your enzyme storages, burn more stored body fat,and detoxify your body. I love snacking on fresh carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, celery, and a wonderful sweet snack to replace sherbert is fresh frozen fruit! peaches, pineapple, berries, grapes and bananas.
Concerning your workouts, 3 times a week weight training sounds great! you might want increase the number of days that you do cardio, try adding a walking program on the days that you don't go to the gym.
Concerning vitamins, If you are eating very healthy and limiting your processed food intake I don't feel that vitamins are needed, If you still would like to take them or you feel your diet isn't as good as it should be, go ahead, but make sure you choose a brand that is all natural not synthetic. I do strongly recommend the use of a good enzyme supplement taken 20 minutes before eating your meals and inbetween meals if you are still wishing to lose weight.
Bets of luck. Keep in touch
Sportmom42> I looked into your map question. But so far no results! HEY, EVERYBODY!!!!>>> IF anyone knows where sportsmom42 can find a copy of the Disney property map with the miles mapped out, PLEASE!! lets us know...I would love to have a copy too!!
tinkandme> I'm very concerned with the leg pains that you are experiencing. First of all, Have you seen a doctor about this? I'm sure that bodyweight plays a role in the problem...But.. to be on the safe side, PLEASE consider see a doctor. Remember advil is not the answer and prolonged use of it can cause other problems as well!!. Please write back and let me know what your doctor has to say.
PRINCESS VIJA> Glad to hear the movitational tips are a hit! I keep them posted too!!
Even I need a little reminder now and then! Aerobic / weighting training tapes are an excellent way to get in and stay in shape I recommend the aerobic tapes mon-weds-fri
weight/toning tapes on tues and thurs and if you can take a walk on the weekends and grab a little fresh air!! Best of luck

I have low back problems. Everytime I go out and walk my lower back starts to hurt within 15 minutes of my walk. Right now I am on the Torso track to get my back strengthened and that strenthens my back, stomach and arms and I do 3 sets of 60 5 days a week. I am also on the tread mill 2-3 x's a week. How long does it take to get the back strenthened? Do you suggest anything else I should do? My husband says my back starts to hurt due to I am walking like a pregnant person.
Question do I have to be on the treadmill? I really do not care to do this. Only thing I really want to do is the torso track. Would that still be ok? or do I have to continue being on the treadmill?
Thanks

Thanks for the hypothyroidism diet advice. I am under a doctor's care and I appreciate you mentioning you are not a doctor. However, you seem to be quite knowledgeable on diets and nutrition and physical wellbeing.
My favorite part of your advice was to avoid certain foods that I don't usually eat anyway (such as brussel sprouts) - that will be the easy part!
Thanks.

I had a baby 9 months ago and the weight just wasn't dropping so I went to my doctor and she gave me fastin? It has really gotten me motivated to loose weight, plus the idea of getting into some good looking clothes instead of fat clothes (as my husband calls them). I was never like this before. My current exercise progam is walking a 15 minute mile and walk between 40-45 minutes a day with one day off for rest. During my walk I run for 1 minute walk for the other 4. Right off the bat I lost 10 pounds, but the weight has stopped dropping. I think that I am still loosing inches though because of the way my pants fit. Here are my questions for you:
1) What do I need to do to start loosing again? I have been doing this for 3 weeks now.
2) If I wake up at 7:30 and walk at 9:30 should I eat before or after walking?
3) Can you recommend any good websites that could give me some information on getting started weight lifting?
I am really proud of myself for staying motivated I just hope that not loosing any weight right now is going to undermine what I am currently foing.
Thanks for your time

HELLO EVERYONE!!
It's seem to me that many of you have an interest in food combining, but are not really sure what it is or how it works.
Let's begin!
We eat for many different reasons, the physiological reason for eating is to get nutrients into the blood so that we can build new cells to replace the ones that are constantly dying. Dead cells and other body wastes are removed from the body through the systems of elimination. When food is not properly digested, nutrients are not released, and it takes extra energy to remove the undigested waste from the system. This is why you may notice low energy, heartburn, indigestion, constipation, flatulence, bloating, bad breath, cellulite, and weight gain when you eat meals that are not properly combine.
Tha principles of food combining are based on an understanding of how the digestive process works. Different foods are digested in different ways, and they require different digestive juices to release the nutrients that promote efficient digestion and make the process extremely efficient.
The Five Food-Combining Rules:
1. Eat fruit alone. Every morning you will have a breakfast consisting of fresh fruit. Fruit is a great detoxifer for the body. It has the highest water content of all foods, and travels through the body very quickly. Besides the nutrients that it provides, the fiber in fruit acts like a brush to keep the intestinal walls clean and clear. The soluble fibers in fruit also help to lower cholesterol in the blood.
Fruit is a very simple food. It contains natural sugars that are ready for the body to utilize, and provides it's own enzymes, so it does not need much time to be digested in the stomach as quickly as possible, so that it's nutrients will be absorbed rapidly through the walls of thre small intestine and colon. This is why you should not combine fruit with other foods, or have it too soon after eating protein or starch. If you do, the sugar in the fruit will ferment in the stomach, causing bloating and gas pain among other things.
2. Do not combine protein with starch. Protein foods and starchy foods require different digestive juices in order to be properly broken down and used by the body. The digestion of starches begin in the mouth with the enzyme ptyalin, which is contained in your saliva. Proteins are mainly broken down in the stomach, by hydrochloric acid and the protein-splitting enzyme pepsin. Please avoid the traditional American dinner of meat and potatoes, or meat and other starches, as well as sandwiches containing cheese, meats, eggs, or other proteins. When you think about how regularly we consume these combinations, it is no wonder that indigestion remedies are among the best-selling over- the -counter medicines in this country!!
When protein and starch are eaten together, ptyalin is not effectively produced in the saliva, and so the starch is not predigested in the mouth. It enters the stomach and begins to ferment, producing gas. To make matters worse, protein needs to be digested in an acid environment. So, when starches and proteins are combined, the acid and alkaline digestive juices neutralize each other! All this decaying food is held up in the stomach, causing gas and discomfort. More important, the nutrients you need to rejuvenate and replenish your cells are distroyed in the decaying and fermenting process. This dietary cycle can eventually lead to premature aging and illness.
When I speak of protein I am referring mainly to animal proteins. Some plant protein foods, such as beans, contain natural combinations of sarches and proteins. If these foods are eaten alone, the body is able to digest them properly by releasing the proper digestive juices in the proper sequence. Even so, some people do feel uncomfortable after eating beans.
3. Protein with vegetables is okay. Vegetables are high in water content and are relatively easy to digest. They can be broken down in either an acid or alkaline enviroment. And so they can be combined with proteins as well as with starches. The enzymes in the vegetables actually enhance the digestion of protein. The fiber contained in vegetables helps to move the non-fiber protein foods rapidly through the intestines.Since protein requires the most energy to break down, it's best to enjoy your protein meal in the midday between 12:00 and 3:00 pm.
4. Starches with vegetables are okay. Since vegetables do not require their own specific digestive juices, they can be digested in the alkaline environment required by starches. I recommend that you have your protein meal in the afternoon and your starch meal in the evening. You will feel and see the benefits right away when you begin to eat your lighter meal in the evening rather than at lunchtime. Your body will respond by speedliy digesting your dinner meal while you sleep. By morning it will be ready for it's final flushing with a fruit breakfast.
5. Do not drink with meals. If you drink water, tea or any other beverage along with your meal, you dilute the digestive juices that are needed to break down your food, preventing it from being properly digested. The best time to drink fluids is between meals-at least a 1/2 hour before or 1 1/2 after. Remember you need to consume at least 1 ounce of water for every two pounds of body weight. If you are eating fruits and vegetables and drinking plenty of fluids between meals you should not be thirsty. If you do find that you are thirsty after eating, you may be consuming too much salt.
These are the basic rules......let me know your thoughts! BEST WISHES

I had a baby 3 months ago and I am breastfeeding. I have lost 30 pounds of the 40 I gained, I also have another 20 I would like to lose. I am walking and doing areboic and toning exercises. However, Nothing is happening. The weight is not going anywhere.
My main concern is the flabbiness of my stomach now. What is the best exercise to firm this area of my body up. Also, my behind got rather large this time around, what is the best exercise for this area of my body? I was not allowed to exercise from 5 months on and my body reflects that.
Thanks for any information.

Minybear> Concerning your lower back problem- First of all, I found your husband's comments very interesting....if he's correct...this might be a problem for your chiropractor, it sounds like your pelvis is out of alignment, stressing the Quadratus lumborum connection involving the posterior ilac crest. If that is the case all that ab and lower back work is just making the problem worst. What you really need is to have your pelvis alignment checked. Good luck and let me know what your doctor has to say!
Mariecand and Torismom> Congrats to both of you on your wonderful bundles of joy!
On with my best weight loss plan:
Between 6am and 12 noon: Begin your day with unlimited fresh raw fruit. Enjoy oranges, apples, melons, berries, bananas, peaches, in short...any fruit and in any amount you would like to include as long as it is FRESH. Not cooked or canned or frozen!! fresh only!!
Between 12 noon and 3 pm : This is the time for protein and vegetables, especially in the form of a salad. Proteins are stimulating and particularly satisfying. poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, beans, served with a large colorful salad.
Afternoon snack 3 to 5: Any and all raw veggies make wonderful snack foods and make losing weight a snap!
Between 5 to 8: This is your starch and vegetable meal. Enjoy your choice of brown rice, baked potatoe, sweet potatoe, or a chunk of healthy whole-grain bread with an unlimited amount of lightly steamed veggies of your choice
Bedtime Snack: a piece of your favorite fruit
I've said it before and I'll say it again "The healthiest and best way to lose weight is by avoiding all packaged and processed foods and for at least 70% to 80% of the food you consume be fresh raw fruits and vegetables natures best!" You'll feel great and full of energy, as you watch those pounds melt away!

Hi Sky!
I have the opportunity to either walk a track 5 times a week or swim three times a week. I have lost 20 lbs so far on my diet and want to start firming as I loose. I Which one do you suggest would be better. I would be able to stay at each for about 30 minutes. I am not at all fit and know I have to work up to 30 minutes on either of these...I still have about 35 lbs more to loose. Any help would be appreicaited..Also, I still have a motivation problem when it has to do with exercise....

Glo, congrats on 20lb lost! You've done a wonderful job!
Skye, what is the best way to decrease abs and hips? I have long legs and a short torso. My legs & buns respond quickly to my workouts, but my abs/hips don't! I workout with weights 3x a week for 45 min. On weight days I walk about 30 min. Two days a week, my nonweight days, I do interval jogs/ with walking for 45 min. I'm in my early 40s and find that when I try to increase the days that I jog I run into the problem of increasing my injuries. Two days a week seems to be as high as I can go at this point. I feel like I have to work my abs twice as hard as the rest of me to see half the benefit. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

Hope everyone is doing well
Dan a.k.a Dan-tot Thank you for the great question! PLATEAU-what to do
The question is "I do cardio 4 times a week and lift weights 3 times a week but it seems that I have hit a plateau"
First of all, you can only do so much exercise! Whether you like it or not, 80% of the game of dieting and exercise is WHAT YOU PUT IN YOUR MOUTH!! When it comes to weight loss, the most important point to remember is that you need to make sure that 75% of the food that you eat should be raw (fruits & salad, vegggie snacks) or very minimally cooked vegetables and protein. When you eat a diet high in cooked or processed foods you have to except the facts that these actions will create a significant increase in stored bodyfat. Raw foods contain enzymes, neither vitamins, minerals or hormones can do any work--without enzymes. Enzymes are substances which make life possible. They are needed for every chemical reaction that occurs in the body. Most americans eat a diet of mainly cooked foods.
Understand that any time you cook foods at temperatures over 180 degrees, the enzymes
in it are 100% destroyed. Consuming a diet that is primarly cooked or processed is one of the paramount causes of excess weight gain, premature aging and degenerative diseases. The two most important tips that I can give you to losing excess bodyfat and getting into the best shape of your life is to make sure 75% percent of your diet comes from fruits and vegetables, avoid any and all processed foods (packaged foods) Make sure most of your foods are raw fruits and vegetables, organic meats, whole grains. If anyone would like me to elaborate on the importance of enzymes and nutrition, speak up! If what you would like is a dietary outline SPEAK UP! let's attack this weight again / health problem together. Show me your commitment to health and weight loss and I will show you my commitment to you!
Bless you all....I look forward to hearing from you! Love and Laughter...SKY

hello Sky....I have enjoyed reading this thread periodically.
My issue is past anorexia. I blew my metabolism on starving myself and abusing laxatives. It is very difficult to lose weight now. I have been a gym rat, and that didnt work. I watch what I eat without going overboard and I walk everyday. There is also the emotional issue...I am afraid that by losing weight I will fall into the same patterns. I could lose 25-35 pounds so I am fairly overweight and want to do something. Any suggestions? thanks.

Dear AMID CHAOS
God bless you! Eating disorders are a very serious matter.
First of all, You have not blown your metabolism. But, I do hope you see your doctor and have your thyroid checked. For right now, let's look at the emotional aspect
You are in charge of your mind and your body. And you want to live healthyfully. Remember, every action is preceded by a thought. Your addictions end when you change your thoughts.
This is the simplest of exercise and a concrete way to become more familiar with and grounded in your strenghts, your goodness, and the side of you that you wish to reinforce. Keep a small spiral notebook with you, and whenever you think about a quality in yourself that you admire or approve of, write it down.
What do you like about yourself? Do you have great handwriting, keep your desk organized, sew well? Do you tuck your kids in at night, help others who are in need? Do you continously try to read to expand your mind, call your parents every week? Do you support others to reach their health goals? Remind yourself of the big things and the little things.
Some of us are so busy thinking about what's wrong with us that we never even begin to notice our good qualities. What makes you feel better? Actively listing all that is right about you will help you change your mental program and picture about yourself! Feeding your heart and mind will make it much easier to take good care of your healthy body!
I am a firm believer that as long as a person sees themselves as over weight they will be. Focus on how healthy you are and how healthy you are becoming.
I would love to speak to you more ...I would like to know more about how you are eating now, how is your mind set, how much are you working out? Please check back in with me
Take care Love Sky

Sky,
Last year I lost around 65 lbs. A couple of us from my family went in together and actually put some money on it. I know its an odd way to do it, but I got with in 2 lbs of my higher end goal. Yeah!
Well, Since the final weigh in (last Dec) I have gained about 7 lbs.
I have been trying to "get back on track" since March, maybe even get to my mid or lower end goal (all the goals are within 15 lbs of each other).
Getting back into my calorie counting, writing down everything I eat and exercising 5 times a week. But, I just seem to bouncing around within that 7 lb range.
I am so happy I lost the weight but I still feel very flabby :(
I am thrilled to have gone from a size 18 to a 10...but getting into a swim suit is still not good.
And I realize that I don't have the extra 65 lbs to carry around causing me to burn a few more calories in each work out. My workout habits are walking (treadmill) and riding a recumbant bike. A little work with light weights, but I have a harder time sticking with that. We have this equipment at home which helps me make the time.
Have I just hit a Plateau or do I need to approach the whole thing differently?
Thanks,
jodyb

I'm really looking forward to some motivation and advice in this area coming from the DIS!! WOW! Can things get any better??
My problem is - here is comes - I'm not getting any younger!
I still think of myself as 22.. but um, actually since I was born in 1953 I guess I'm getting a little off the reality bus with that....
I was always "too thin" as a child and teen. But that all changed when I had my 3 kids (the youngest was born 10 years ago and I still haven't lost my "baby fat"!)
HELP!
I know a high protein diet and lots of exercise is what works for me - my problem is KEEPING UP WITH THAT and not losing steam and backsliding.
But if Pete can do it I can do it! That's what I'm telling myself now!
(Hey Pete, we want to see before and after pics to help our motivation here...)
I'll be looking forward to this area of the DIS!!
Thanks!

Hi all. Well I lost 35 lbs last year. I gained 25 lbs back. I really want to loose 10lbs I know I would feel and look better. My problem is that when I lost the wt. I was to the point where I looked sick. It became an obsession. In my mind I fight the right and wrong (healthy and a little over weight, or Allie McBeal ). I can't seam to find a happy medium. Any suggestions?

Hello Sky. My question is about weight lifting.
Most of my weight is carried into my hips, butt, and inner thighs ( and it's creeping out to my outer thighs ). I have read how some exercises are not good for these problem areas. Like stair climbing, or the ski machine. My husband has suggested that I start weight lifting. I'm afraid of looking like a body builder. Do you have any advice on starting a weight lifting program, for my problem areas-----that will also NOT make me look like a body builder??
Thanks for your time!!
I am doing ok weight loos wise, but I had a large middle, and want to know what I can do to help get rid of the left overs. I walk about 2 miles a day 5 days a week. I no longer take the elevator at work, and try to not sit at my desk as often as before. Any suggestings on trimming the waist and hip sections. I truely do not have lots of extra time, and I hate sit ups...PLEASE help!!!!

HI sky,
well, I am still struggling with the motivation. I was fairly excited last week Thursday, and as I was walking I thought to myself very excitedly "I am really going to do this!" and then IMMEDIATELY I thought to myself, "But I am so scared". It stopped me in my tracks! I have a Disney trip next year to plan as a reward to loose weight, the incentive is there. Now, why in the world would I be scared to loose weight? I have talked to my friends, mentioned it on the CB, but I would like to hear from a professional.

My hubby & I are going to Disney Sept.28-Oct.7, 2002 and I would like to loose weight. Realistically, how much could I loose from now until then? I'm trying to loose the weight in a healthy, responsible way.....thanks for the suggestions.

I found that I cannot truly keep up with both a diet and exercise - so this year I decided to get some sort of exercise ruitine started. I looked at my treadmill/coat rack and made a point to 1) take the clothes off it more often and 2) walk at least 100 miles before I get to WDW for the 100th - I've been trying to do a mile a day with some exceptions (like tonight). It was part of my new year's resolution to not go back to WDW looking like I did the last couple of years since having my son. The baby weight needs to finally come off!
