I always search multiple ones to try and get the best deals...I have used:

Lowestfare.com
Cheaptickets.com
Expedia.com
Travelocity.com
Southwest.com

and sometimes I see what flights are going for on the websites of Usair, Delta and United

I like to check sidestep.com. Its not a discount ticket site but I found that its good to see what airfares are for several airlines using one search. Also, Midway Air came up for me on a search. I don't think they quote airfares on their own site but I found EXCELLENT fares on Midway Air by using http://www.sidestep.com

Travelzoo (http://www.travelzoo.com)
Travelocity Dream Map (http://dps1.travelocity.com/dreamMap.ctl?)

Expedia Airline Fare List (http://www.expedia.com/pub/agent.dll?qscr=fltw)

Orbitz (http://www.orbitz.com)

After checking the above four sites for best available fares...I go directly to the individual airline websites to check my exact dates. (Some airline websites have internet-only fares which are not listed on the above sites)

Air Tran (http://www.airtran.com)
Alaska (http://www.myalaskaair.com)
American (http://www.aa.com)

Like all of the above replies....I've tried a majority of them, but now I find
orbitz to be exactly what I am looking for.

I've been very pleased with the results.

I was nervious the first time, so I contacted the airlines to confirm what
I supplied orbitz with, and they confirmed everything with me.

I will diffinatly use them again.

In that order. As others have posted above, if BestFares or SmarterLiving announce a sale, we check it out with the listed air carrier.:)

We always check bestfares.com first for their "Snooze You Lose" fares.

www.itasoftware.com is very similar to orbitz....

the added feature here is the "details" they give you with regard to fare code. taxes. PFC and landing taxes.....they are all broken out so you can see the "individual" costs
