Rest day today!
And I am resting from everything - no housework, no office work, no cooking.
So far I have read People Magazine, Instyle magazine, browsed the DIS boards, sent DH my christmas wish list.
Keep up the great work everyone.

Seven Weeks to go!
:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc
I haven't done any training today, but I did a lot of walking through the craft show at our IX Center here. It is a huge show and lost of walking. Don't know if I will do any more yet or not.
Rachel, I like your idea of rest. Now that is how it should be done!
::yes::
Good luck everyone who is digging after those better rates. Hope it all comes together. I can't believe that for that many people attending that more can't be done to offer some sort of discount. It is not even something that I thought wouldn't be done. Amazing, and quite disappointing. I imagine it speaks for the times these days.

Rest Day for me today - though it's not been very restful.
I teach Sunday School, and I had to lead a Thanksgiving craft today. Arrgg - very stressful. I am convinced that when 70 children get together they all turn their brains off. I had to repeat the even the most simple instructions - like fold your pipe cleaner in half - at least 4 times. I also got in a snip with one the parents. She asked if she could drop her child off with me, which really wasn't my job, but I said "sure" I thought I was being upbeat, agreeable, and helpful. She thought I was being sarcastic, and proceeded to lecture me on the appropriate time for Sunday School to begin accepting children.
Then DH and I had to change the water in our fishtank - There is a 2 hour project.
I hope everyone else has a better day than me.

Hi all!
I'm having a good, but semi-busy rest day. The kids and I went to a baby shower (DH was working on renovating the attic so he couldn't watch them). Spencer kept loudly saying,"where's the baby? Is that the girl with the baby in tummy? You have a baby in your tummy! I tried to quiet him down, but he has a little problem with voice modulation/volume. He also tends to repeat phrases a lot, so this went on for a little while. Everyone thought it was funny, so it wasn't that big of a deal, but if I didn't eventually quiet him down it would have become annoying after a while.
TriMom- I'm sorry you had such a stressful morning. I hate when people get an attitude and are condescending/rude to people, especially to volunteers. I hope you get a chance to relax this evening.
I have a question for everyone. What kind of pants are you wearing for the half : bike shorts, regular shorts, knee length tights, ankle length tights, capris, long flared pants, coolmax, other fabric... I can't decide between long coolmax type pants with a flare, knee length tights, or capris. I found really inexpensive coolmax type flared capris, and I have knee length tights that are cotton/spandex. I'm concerned with chafing, being too hot, or being too cold. What do you think?

Happy Sunday Everyone,
I'm back home after two glorious weeks at our favourite spot in the whole wide world!!! It's awful to have to come home but at least I know that I get to go back in 6 and 1/2 weeks. I was going to do a walk today (after two days of sitting in the car I needed to walk), but I ended up doing laundry, getting caught up on the boards and going through the mail and paying bills. Tomorrow I'm going to start at week 7 of the training. After motoring around Disney the last two weeks it shouldn't be a problem. I got my race packet in my mail today. It was very exciting and made me realize that we are actually going to make it to the start line. I'm buying my "I did it" shirt before the race because for me getting to the start line is "doing it".
I missed reading about all your accomplishments every day but I did enjoy spending uninterupted time with my family. My DD will be fun tomorrow though when I drop her off at daycare. She has spent the entire time glued to my side.
I love the logo. It is absolutely beautiful. We have a t-shirt tranfer press where I work and I think it's going to transfer wonderfully.
Have a super week everyone!!!

Debbie - LOTW = Lushes of the World. It refers to this thread:
Monorail Drink-a-thon (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=665193&perpage=15&pagenumber=1)
It's 30 pages of which bars and lounges to try and what dirnks to try.
DH and I will be doing a monorail tour the last night of our trip. Boat from WL to CR, then monorail to GF, then to Poly, back to CR, and then the boat back to WL.
My rest day continued - I have watched repeats of Magnum, A Hill Street Blues - behind the scenes special, and I finally worked out how to set our VCR so I can tape Oprah tomorrow - it's her chrismtas gift special. Would I ever love to be in the audience that day, my christmas shopping would all be done in a day!

just got done reading last week and this week's thread. Man oh man everyone is getting it TOGETHER........ well I sort of am......
I don't even get nervous until I come read all the great stuff everyone is doing ...then I think ooooooooooooooo - only 7 more weeks - so much to do. Breathe deep - big sigh - relax - okay I am with ya again :p
Sounds like my my personal TA (oHmom) is going to be checking into our park tickets tomorrow - sure hope that those great folks at WDW realize that we have been working hard, sweating, saving our pennies and getting a "fair shake" just "ain't" too much to hope for!!!
A guy I work with and his wife are also coming for the event and she is signed with team in training and boy he is so discouraged at the prices he has to pay as an "outsider" (like $30 for the pasta meal). He was on a roll the other day and I don't remember it all but it was a long list of things. Also, they had called WDW about some specific questions and everytime they called they got a different answer, so more frustration for them.
I am sure that it will all work out, but for those who like to "be on top of things" (includes getting the best prices available) it sure raises the stress level.
I did do a 5 mile walk Sat. went for another absolutely wonderful massage and can finally say that my leg does seem like it is finally moving in the "it's getting better" direction. I get discouraged sometimes, but I do think that it is going to be okay.
On the clothing questions, I am just waiting until it's a bit closer to figure out what the forecast is, but I do think you should practice in different options to see what does work best for you. Karen, I have a lng sleeve light weight wicking shirt (for low temps) that I wear under a short sleeve wicking shirt and I just "slip out" of the lg sleeve one if I get too hot and tie around my waist. Should you check them out to buy - look at the temps they are geared for. I am thinking that long spandex tights will be my choice but really not sure.
Cheryl is cruising - bet she is happy ::yes::
I am sticking with the MFM training schedule this week and Thursday calls for a 5 miler so it's a Turkey Trot for me, oHmom, EVansmom and my DH. they will have to wait on me - cause I am the slowest - but I will be thrilled if I can make it in a 15 min mile pace since I have been out of commission some.
Happy training everyone - it's getting closer!

Grammy- I'm so happy to hear your leg is feeling better and that you completed 5 MILES the other day! Good for you!! Good luck on your quicker 5 miles on Thursday- but PLEASE don't try to rush it too much! We don;t want you to get reinjured!!!
Susan- WELCOME BACK!! We missed your input while you were gone. You should go back to last weeks thread and just read the last 2 pages. You will not believe how well everyone did! It was so cool to see all these large total miles people walked! Can you tell us about/post a pic of the Contemporary hill???
Rachel- sound like you had a nice productive rest day... well, at least MY kind of rest day! ;)
Dawn- You little guy sounds adorable! I remember when my kids were little. Some of the things they did use to just embarass me so badly! Don't worry about that! I wish I hadn't. He's not damaging anyone, just being a little boistrous- and enthusiastic. I remember one time when we took our kids to see Cinderella and Alissa (my baby- like 3 y.o.) was so involved in it that when the scene came up where everyone is calling for Cinderella to come and do something for them and she is running all over trying to answer them... well- Alissa stood on my lap at yelled out at the tops of her lungs (so the evil step sisters could hear her of course!) "She's coming , She's coming!" The entire theatre burst out laughing! Kids do some wonderful and emabarassingly wonderful things. Enjoy it while you can! They grow up WAY to fast!!!
Are you ready to walk again today? I think I am! I'm REALLY REALLY excited that it's only 2 miles too!!! I've been researching my walking clothing since my FREEZING experince the other day!
Does anyone know if the wicking fabric keeps you warm in cold weather? I don't want to be sweaty, I understand that the wicking fabric pulls moisture away from your body- and that's good. But if the wicking fabric pulls the moisture away from your skin, when the wind blows, do the clothes get cold therefor making you cold? I don't know how to explain what I mean, I just have to hope someone understands my question! After my walk the other day and beinmg so cold for so long, I want to do my best avoiding that as possible. But I can't stand being too hot when I walk. I wonder if wicking pants will be too hot for me to walk in??? Any help in this out there? I'm looking for the same advice Dawn is on this everyone!!!
TriMom- I've been in your shoes many, many times! It is a very difficult job supervising that many children all at once. You deserve a BIG pat on the back for doing what you do with those kids on Sunday! People need to remember that, in essence, you are VOLUNTEERING to do this work and should be thanking you instead of chastizing you! So- I'll say Thank you for loving those kids so much that you would do this for them on Sunday! I think that you handled the situation just fine. Don't let her misinterpretation of the events get to you. Keep up the good work!
Lily- did you find anything good at your craft show? I love craft shows!!
Debbie- I read your last post on our thread from last week. I think everyone has good reason to be proud of themselves. Don't you??? We really do RULE!!!
Well- I only have to walk 2 miles today. And I go to the Dr. to have that stress test and ultrasound done on my heart too. I should know today, I think, whether it's clear sailing for me or not. I think it will be, but just in case, lease send a little pixie dust my way!

after a rest weekend (finagled my workout week that way) I did a 50 min powerwalk this morning, my shins hurt too. i've noticed it takes me about 2 miles to really get warmed up and in the groove of it
have a fabulous turkey day -- i have tons of things to get done myself so may not be on much this week, i will be true to my workout schedule though!

Our longest run is scheduled for Dec 11th--20 for the full and 10 for the halfsey's--we are to treat that as the real deal--so ANYTHING we plan on wearing, eating, drinking, etc--we should do on that day. After that we taper--and I'll probably still do the same things--but be ready for supplies for your longest day :)
I am wearing running shorts, a tech long-sleeve shirt (cheapy at Target, not officially a coolmax) and my Team in Training singlet on top. Anything on top is what I can find at the thrift stores and I will be shopping very soon.
Tips: Trashbags (black ones) make for great windbreakers. You want to make sure any layers can be removed without taking your shoes off. One of our halfsey experts from last years disney took old jogging pants and sweat shirts--slit the legs up high and slit the front of the shirts. She used adhesive vel-cro to make the clothes one piece again. When it was time to remove--stripped right off!! She also said that at the EXPO, they sell toss away paper jogging suits--when you get too warm for them, you just tear them off literally. She said they were about $6 or so.
For warmth on your training days--our coach suggested too layers--one to draw away moisture and another layer to keep you warm...b/c your clothes still get wet--so if you don't have another layer--you could FREEZE.

Well--make him feel better--this is NOT the same Pasta dinner that Disney held last year for all participants...it is TNT's own deal! It is at EPCOT--they have speakers and such and it really brings to home why all of the TNT athletes worked so hard to accomplish. It is a very good Dinner and it is Disney buffet rates. He'd have to spend just as much elsewhere. I didn't seem bothered by the prices--but hubby was--and I put it into perspective. He is not getting the $10 buffet that was served to ALL participants last year. This buffet (from what I was told) has everything--even chicken--lots of sauces to choose from for you pasta--etc.
Karebear--what do you mean the boards are going down   ?? I'll PM you right away ;)
Me today: 3 miles (love that GPS!!!!!) of fast running--which for me doesn't equate to as fast as everyone else I know ;) but it serves its oxygen increasing purpose. I picked up my half-marathon packet for the Space Coast Marathon and Half this weekend--it is so funny--everytime I'm in that store and mention the half (today to pick up the packet)--I also talk about gear or food and how I should try something new--and they FREAK OUT--"you shouldn't do that on your race day"...It always makes me laugh b/c I have to remind them for the hundreth time that race day for me is Disney on the 9th! Space Coast is my test run for Crowd Control and Race-like conditions but other than that just another training day for me. The funny thing--I'm going to get passed by the leading marathon runner before I complete the half :hyper: since the halfs run one loop along the river and the fulls have to run the same loop twice (I'm glad Disney is only 1 loop--I don't like repeats or back and forth more than once for some reason--it unmotivates me).
That being said--has anyone tried the Clif Bars?? That's my new test to see if I like something other than Gu for a little variety.
I discovered I do not like Gatorade--it keeps me thirst instead of quenching my thirst.

Monday's training - I did 5 miles on the dreadmill today. I really hate indoor running now, but it the only way I can get a workout in durning the week. I tried to think of it as good mental training for the stretch between AK and WWOS.
You know your a marathoner when a 5 mile run becomes the "short" run this week. ;)
For those of you looking for what to wear, I recommend the Runner's World "Dress the Runner" page:
http://www.runnersworld.com/tool/1,5429,s6-52-0-0-0,00.html
you enter the weather conditions, and they tell you the best thing to wear. It has never let me down.
Lisa - I like a Cliff Bar about 30 min. before I start a run, they feel really heavy in stomach when I tried one during the run. As for flavors - I like the peanut butter the best. I don't like the Chocolate brownie, I will leave it to your imagination what it looks like. Have you tried PowerGel? - I like the taste better than GU, and some flavors have caffine :hyper:

Hi there. New to this board :wave2:
I am training to run the full marathon, what a huge challenge. I ran an 18 mile organized road race in preparation last Saturday and survived with minimal wounds (blister on toenail and a bit of chafing). I definitely think wearing what you plan on wearing race day for your long walks/runs is vital to be comfortable on race day. I wore my fanny pack for the first time and was pleasantly surprised that it did not bother me during the run! (neoprene CD fanny pack from circuit city-caselogic brand, worked out great-big enough to carry my disposible camera, too!)
As for the clif bars, I love them. My favorite is almond bark cherry. I tried the brownie flavor and didn't enjoy it! I eat them an hour or so before my long runs, have never eaten it while I ran.
I suck the powergel vanilla in the middle of the long runs. So far that is the only brand and flavor I can get down. I do notice a difference in my energy level once I get that stuff in me.
I have a question for anyone who has particpated in this event in past years. The corral placements...are they numbered? lettered?Do all the people who estimate over 5 hrs get thrown in corrals together or do they separate out those people as well? I know if you estimate under 5 hrs you have to provide proof of time. Just wondering if everyone else just get thrown in there or if they attempt to separate the slower runners from the walkers (someone who estimates 5hr 20 min from someone who estimates 6 hr 20 min)
Also, are they very strict about the corrals? I am running with two other people and we did not organize ourselves on the registration with the same estimated finish time. Will we be allowed to be in the same corrals at the start if our numbers aren't the same?
Thanks for your help! Anyone with insight on how to best go about race morning, I am listening! Not looking forward to the early wake up call but it sounds like it must be done to get to the start on time!
Less than 7 weeks to go :bounce:

Welcome--thanks on the Cliff Info--I eat my breakfast pre-long runs..just notice sometimes I get the grumbly's during the run--I use Gu for the energy--I was just looking for a snack food LOL. I have been using cookies, but was looking for something with a little more bang for the buck :)
Corral Placement is STRICT--your number (which was determined by your predicted finish time) determines your corral. Evidently they are pretty darn persnickety about it. Our coaches shared that after the start line--you'll see people waiting with cell phone talking to their friends who were placed in corrals further back. So all I can recommend is cell phone to fix that problem. If they or you have proof of time--you can always request a different corral than the one assigned when you get to World of Sports to pick up your packets. I was told that the 5 hour time was THE most popular--so some people will get slid back b/c there just is only so much room in that corral. So if my proof of time gets me into the corral, then I will show them. I am not certain on the walkers vs. runners--but if there is an hour spread in finishing times--might be a toughy--I think you can go to the back of the crowd--just ask at the EXPO when you get pick up your packet. Otherwise, cell phone is the way to go!!!
Race Morning tips--On a long run day sometime before the race--practice getting up at your wake up call time---and then having the breakfast you plan on having on race morning. You can bring your own or they do have the cafeterias opened selling basic items (no eggs and bacon :hyper: ). Once you eat your breakfast--you can always go back to bed--or just practice waiting for 2 hours and then running LOL--but this way you will know if your body needs a little more food than you are giving it or if you need to power up some more in the wait period prior to the race.
The biggest WARMTH tip provided to me was shop garage sales or thrift stores looking for a comfy blanket to keep you warm while you are waiting for the race to start and then shed it like you will your other layers (bought also at thrift stores).
The biggest POTTY tip provided---If you are usually heading to the potty for the unmentionable potty around race start--it's time to train yourself to go earlier--or face waiting in porto potty lines. Our coach said some teammembers once tried laxatives--it worked for some and worked too much for one runner who stopped at every potty along the way. As far as peeing--Go when you wake up, Go before you leave the hotel, go when you get to the lot, go right before they are lining you up--and try to avoid the potty's in the first few miles b/c the lines are long. But hey guess what--evidently people have and will always go in the bushes during the disney marathon--so you might want to carry some TP if nature is really really calling and their isn't a potty for miles ;) And join the club of those who peed on property without getting arrested. :hyper:

On the unmentionable potty--I had ice cream the night before my long run and it worked--but that is for me--someone who does NOT eat dairy (I'm not lactose intolerant--just don't typically like it).

That dress the runner thing is Neat!
Just keep in mind you want your items to be sheddable b/c you won't be wanting to wear them by the end of the race--I did it for 39 degrees and 50 degrees--HUGE difference...Went from Jacket glove and pants to running shorts and t-shirt or singlet. It will probalby be close to 70 for marathon conclusion--not sure on half conclusion.
I wouldn't be buying expensive items for race day!

Okay quick update ! I've been lurking because I have fallen off the training plan.
Just a few things in my way. No illness or injuries though. I am hosting Thanksgiving at my home. There will be 17 of us for 3 days and 30 on Thanksgiving. On Fri. 11/26 I am planning a 5K Turkey Trot for the food Shelf ( This is really has stressed me out. Never again! All weekend we (DH and I) put up towel bars, shelving, lights, doorknobs,etc... and cleaned the garage. I tried to get some of the house cleaned up and ready but had to be handy man assistant every 10 minutes. Today my DH had hernia surgery so I was home from work and did a bit of baking and straightening. Tomorrow I do the guest room and clean the bathrooms. Should be just about ready. Once I get through Fri., my DD will be 15 on Sun. and I am doing a surprise Birthday Party inthe afternoon. The following weekend is my DD (17) winter formal. I think I can relax a bit after that if i make it! Needless to say my training has taken a back seat. Can wait to be selfish about me again. Oh, and in the middle of all this I turned 46.
Hope you all have a Fabulous Thanksgiving! i'lll be back at it soon.

HAPPY B-day BECKIE!!! It sounds like you have been a busy girl- but I'm glad you haven't forgotten about the marathon!
I ahve a 5 miler walk today. And- I've had some folks asking about the Dr's visit yesterday and as far as I know, it was good. I did the treadmill test and the bottom number on my blood prssure actually went down the longer and harder I walked. He said he doesn't see that very often, but that iut was good! My BP started at 124/90 and ended at 164/68! How the heck does that happen??!?!? I'm still waiting for the results from the ultrasound. But I think it was fine. So now I can BE FRE and not worry. One thing the Dr. did tell me was that when I walk he wants me to walk at a speed that would make it difficult for me to have a conversation! He said he knows that's contrary to what the trainers say, but for your hearts good- that's what he suggests. When I walk, I'm never out of breath- are you? I guess maybe I'll try bumping ity up a little. Gee- I think if I did I might just get that 16 minute mile!
Meme- I sent you another email! I like what you've done with the logo.

I did an easy 2 mile mall walk yesterday. My hip started hurting a little about halfway through, so I took it really slow. During the week I don't really do miles, just times. Today I have a 45 minute walk on the schedule. I have to get my grocery shoping done while the kids are at preschool, but I'm going to try to fit the walk in there somewhere. If I can't manage it, I'll do a stationary jog on the mini-trampoline tonight.
Becky -:bday:
Karen - I'm glad to hear that the tests went smoothly, I hope the results are what you and your doctors want to see.
My Thanksgiving is going to be pretty calm. I can't imagine 30 people! My only stressful event over the next couple of days will be taking the children for their Christmas picture tommorrow at JcPenney's. I'll let you know how it goes.

I agree sort of--I would do this for your short days--helps increase the oxygen flow--I would NOT do it on your long days...it'll tucker you out. The harder you work on the shorts--the easier (and less time) it takes to do your longs. We have been training this way for several weeks...I HATE it immensely--b/c it tires me out during the week...but sure enough--my pace does improve over the weekend.
The reason I would stay from it on your long days is--that you might burn through all your energy too quickly and then end up bushed and overtime on the pace. I wouldn't want the sweepers to catch you :)

Yippee for Karen, glad to hear the good news.

10nis, Welcome aboard! Great info you have for us too. Thanks. Will you share your name with us?
TriMom, MaryK, I liked the dress up runner thing too. What a fantastic aid.
Have had a busy couple of days again. Will not get in my time tonight. I am absolutely tired. Tomorrow DH and I head to the gym after work so that will be a good end to my day. I plan on doing some sort of version of my own Turkey Trot on TG as we will be having a small gathering at our place and DH must work so we will wait til late afternoon before serving.
Karen, I sent you a PM with my email and AIM name. If anyone else wants it let me know. We will get through this down time this weekend!

Good Wednesday Morning Everyone,
Happy Birthday Becky!! Go ahead and celebrate.
MeMe--the logo is awesome!! I can't wait to transfer it onto a shirt to see what it will look like.
Last night, Sears finally came to fix my old treadmill. The guy fixed it with a screw and a drill. He said that if something else goes wrong its not worth fixing because it would cost hundreds of dollars and I could buy a new one for a bit more than that. I did walk on it last night and it works fine. I went 1 mile in 25 minutes. I was very disappointed in that time and couldn't figure out why I was so out of breath and finding it difficult to walk at the 2.5mile pace. After I was finished I figured out that it is set to the number three (highest) level for elevating the treadmill. I'd been walking up hill all the time. That made me feel better though. This morning I was up at 5:30 and did the 2 mile WATP. Took some Tylenol and came to work. I feel good now but I know that later on I'll be dragging my butt.
I was motivated to get back on track because of something other than the marathon. While I was on vacation a co-worker (38 years young) was found dead in his apartment. He had Type 1 diabetes and had had the flu. He had lapsed into a diabetic coma and died. Today is the memorial service and it will be a rather somber day around here.
That news made me have a better vacation because it brought to the forefront how precious our time with family is. I consider all of you to be my extended family as we train together to take on this monumental goal.
Have a great training day everyone!!:sunny:

Only managed a 2.5 yesterday due to time again:crazy: And today it is raining so we'll see.
Lily, I also want to do my own turkey trot- hope to be out early and done early - how far are you going????
Susan, what terrible news about your co-worker:( sorry to hear. The logo I sent is not the final one so don't get it transferred yet. With everyone's input I think we're going to do a donald logo for the 1/2, a mickey logo for the full or combine them both for WDW marathon.
What does everyone prefer? and for the back, if you decide you want something on the back, the brooms from fantasia & "we will NOT be swept!"

Hi everyone. My computer at home won't connect to my internet ... something about a dead battery for the clock timer messed up my Windows drivers  :badpc: And work has been really crazy so no time to DIS :( Last week, I did everything BUT my 4 mile brisk on my so-called "long day". I'm OK with that because I have no problems doing 4 miles in an hour. This week, however, started out OK with a 40 minute power walk at lunch, a 30 minute super-power walk at night, and then Curves for x-training yesterday. Unfortunately, I will be lucky to get to Curves one more time (Fri morning) because life is getting in the way yet again. I'm frustrated, but I know that a few days off of training isn't going to undo all of the wonderful progress I've made.
Went to my Dr. yesterday for yearly physical. He did a 1/2 in the spring and just ran the Detroit full marathon in October. We had a good chat about some things because I know the guy that he trained with. He thought that our group of Wisher's and the support that we offer each other was awesome!
Congrats to all, and good wishes to everyone that has reason to celebrate this week! Stay healthy and uninjured folks ... it's getting close!
10nis ... welcome to our thread! I hope that you'll continue to share your information with us!

Hi everyone,
My training has been on hold for the past week due to that car accident last Wednesday. I was planning on a walk tonight, but it is pouring rain and cold, so I guess I'll get back on track tomorrow.
I just wanted to wish all my American friends a happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy yourselves! And good luck to all of you going shopping on Friday. I've never experienced it, but I've heard all about it and it sounds

OK- Who knows what to do for shin splints????
Rachael Q
11-24-2004, 06:15 PM
Hi Karen,
From my physio, when I had shin splints a year or so ago:
Shin splints is pain in the lower, front leg. The injury is an overuse injury and can be caused by running on hard surfaces or running on tip toes. If you over pronate then you are also more susceptible to this injury.
Symptoms can include:
Tenderness, Lower leg pain, swelling, lumps and bumps, pain when the toes are bent downwards and/or a redness in the skin.
Treatment:
Rest, apply ice initially, wear shock absorbing insoles (Dr Scholls are good), do non weight bearing exercises, take anti inflammatories, stretch, massage an anti inflammatory gel into the muscle, try a different pair of shoes.
Rachael

11-24-2004, 07:22 PM
Karen : ice and rest have worked for me. biggest issue was getting fitted for decent shoes. I think you've already done that though.
As far as "pushing it", I do 1 steady run (a decent pace, just hard enough) 1 speed workout (comfortably hard, push it but not to the point where it hurts) and 2 easy workouts around my long run which is done long and slow. Remember, race day "hype" will give you a nice speed boost.
Susan: so sorry to hear about your co-worker...:(
Nancy: hopefully you'll be 100% soon.
No gels or gu for me--"pukey"... I use honey or honey "stinger shots" (like gel packs) with caffeine. Mostly I run on empty. Even a little food makes me queasy.
"potty use" isn't a big concern for me. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do! When I did Phila. Distance Run in Sept. one woman dropped her shorts literally on the side of the road-the lines for the portapotties were too long. Many of us got to "know" her intimately! :earseek: Bet she didn't lose much time though! :teeth:

OMG....realized I haven't checked in this week! Didn't get my long walk sunday....thunder, lighting, rain in the morning. But I did manage to get in my car and go have lunch with nativetxn :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: PF Changs for lunch then a drive over to The Cheesecake Factory for low carb cheesecake!
I'll do a little longer than normal 'regular day' walk tomorrow, since I have the time and want to make some room for shrimp and strawberries (what I'm most looking forward to at our holiday buffet). Then I'll do 8 miles Saturday and 4 miles the weekend after....kind of 'flipping' the M4M schedule. I'll be at Disneyland 12/4-5, so I figure a 4 mile 'workout' will be supplemented with lots of leisure walking too. Then back on schedule for 6 miles/10 miles/8 miles/5 miles/RACE DAY.
Picked up some black chanille gloves and head band, cool max socks and another slightly heavier sock....going to try the two sock trick tomorrow. Figure the black gloves and headband will look best with my lime green WISH scarf! Now I have to hunt down a blanket and the dollar store and look for some Powerade and Snickers Marathon Bars. Hmmmmmm.... maybe I'll WALK to Walmart, it's at least 2.5 miles each way.
It's getting late....better head of to beddie-bye......sleeping is part of training, you know ::yes::

Good luck with the shin splits Karebear--the only thing I can offer is to ice your shins post walk each and everytime, and to possibly check your shoes and see if it is time for a new pair or better pair. You've come so far--I hope it is only temporary.

Happy Thanksgiving!
We're having a lovely quiet Thanksgiving. My walking has been a little slow this week. My left knee and hip have been hurting a little bit so I've been taking it easy. My eating has been going really well though, especially considering it's a holiday week. For dinner tonight I had turkey, cranberry sauce made with Splenda, pureed cauliflower, acorn sqash w/ I can't believe it not Butter, Splenda & cinamon, and a tiny taste of corn spoon bread that I made for Dh and the kids. Later I'll be having sugar free pumkin custard. Dinner was actually very yummy and so far I don't feel deprived.
I hope you're all having a great Thanksgiving!

I didn't get anything extra done yesterday-went to see a high school production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat---still my favourite! :)
Today, I did a Curves workout....so THAT's good! :teeth: It's pretty yucky right now, but after I got my work done, I didn't feel like going out and waking up. Mornings would be better, methinks.
Karen, since I've watched my slow warm-up, I've noticed an improvement in the shin pain. Don't train too fast!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Well- I decided to talk to my trainer about my pain= and she said it is shin splints (Dawn- pay attention!)
She told me not to walk for the next 2 days, to do calve stretches 10 times a day for 30 seconds each time and to ice and massage the calves3-4 times/day. (Fill a paper cup with water a freexe it- when frozen, peel back some of the paper and use ice to massage calves with) Dawn- you should be doing the same thing. That's what the pain in our calves is. Hopefully, because it just started, we've caught it early and it can repair quickly. OH! She laso said walk on flat surfaces only. She also said to take the walking slow. Shin splints are from walking to far to fast.
Sounds like everyone else here had a very productive trainng day otherwise.
Lily- YOU DA WOMAN!!!! <a href='*******************************************ZSzeb008_ZSYYYYYYYYUS' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/28/28_4_8.gif' border=0></a> Is that waht you looked like???

I was wondering as we draw down to the last weeks (maybe month) if we might be able to combine our weekly thread into one last big one. I thought it might be a good way to keep everyone informed of any last minute gatherings if the information is in one thread. We could even ask for cheerleaders to get us through. What do we think?

Good Friday Morning Everyone!! (even though I'm sure that a lot of you aren't even near these boards as you hit those fabulous sales). We get Detroit, Chicago stations and those ads made me want to go to JC Penny etc today. However, instead at 5:30 this morning I was on my treadmill walking. I only did 1.5 miles but I lowered the elevation and it was much better. I'll raise it up later once I'm more back on track. Tomorrow Debbie and I are hoping to do a 4 mile brisk outside. We're going to warm up before we start timing just to see how that affects our overall time. I can't believe that it will take us 20 minutes to walk to the starting line but I guess they must have clocked it to be certain.
I wonder how many of us are in the last corral. Since the number start with 23000 and there is supposedly only 24000 people registered then there shouldn't be any more than 1000 people. I guess we are going to need something to make us stand out in the early morning hours. I have some glow in the dark necklaces (probably 50 or so) that I could bring. Then when you see the lady with the purple necklace you'll know it's me and you too can get a necklace. What do think???

Yes, I believe that's how long they are. I was given over 200 of them because they were old and about 25% of them no longer worked. Hi everyone!
I haven't been around much at all, due to several injuries, etc. I have done very little training, as everytime I start I hurt something! Then I get depressed and eat! So, in addition to not training, I've gained about 25 pounds in the last 6 months!
Anyway, I'm still going to be there and still planning on starting the half-marathon. I'm sure I won't be able to walk more than about 2 miles, as the injuries I currently have probably won't be totally better until about 1-2 weeks before the trip.
I feel bad, and yet, I still want to at least start and do what I can. Even though I know I won't be able to do much, and know that I'll be looking forward to being swept up after a little while, I'll be embarassed about all the people on the sidelines seeing me being swept so early in the game! Any ideas how I can get over the embarassment that morning?
Also, is there a certain thread I should be watching for as for as get-togethers, etc? I feel like you all know each other already, and I feel like such an outsider since I haven't been around much at all. But, I'd still like to meet you all!

You are injured and that means you have not been able to train. If you do decide that you will step off, you got yourself to the line. This is the most important part. Believe in yourself. You do what you can, you do your best, and you are doing!
Get togethers are still in process, so keep coming here. Info should be posted about things really soon now.

I may just be joining you with that sweeper as I have newly developed shin splints- and I have been unable to train for the last week. Trying to get them on the mend as we speak!
As for right now- there are only tenative plans for get togethers. I have contacted the guy in charge of planning and he was supposed to email me our options but I have heard nothing from him at all. I will be calling AGAIN (3rd time) first thing Monday morning to talk to him. Hopefully, he'll be abel to come up with something. If not- then we shall gaher at the pools at resorts or whatever! Secondly, all who've gained weight this year wave to Debbie. :wave2:  That's one for every _____ pounds. :rolleyes1 You are not alone, hun. Thirdly, I like the idea of you digging out JB's Marathoning for Mortals. Penguins we all are. :teeth: Finally, my sister Susan said that she was going to buy the "I did it" shirt at the Expo, the Saturday before the walk. WHY? Because just getting to the starting line is an accomplishment all by itself. I think that I might buy that shirt, too. Finally, if you are swept, maybe they'll let you ride shotgun so you can encourage us as you come up from behind. "WOG! WOG! WOG!! Go girls, get moving. WOG! WOG! WOG!! I've grabbed the wheel, but s/he's trying to pull it back! WOG! WOG! WOG!!!"

Debbie, I'm right there with you. I'll be STARTING the race and will go till my joints (or the sweeper) tell me to stop......if the race had been yesterday that would have been at the 3 mile mark! I'm really thinking now that the most beneficial thing I can do in the next six weeks is really focus on weight loss. I will keep up with my walking schedule, but I'm begining to think the less I have to carry the better it will be for these old joints and the farther I can go.
No need to be embarrased about being the first one in the sweeper van....I was at the 10K in October and I survived. Actually had a great time with the cutie driver! ;) We'll just be at the finish line, cheering on all our WISH pals!
Today I'm putting on a different pair of sneakers and seeing what I can do about 'finishing' yesterday's walk!

No worries Debbie!!! You should never exercise injured anyway. So good for you to head to that start line! You get to enjoy the brrrr COLD brrrr...the fireworks (okay, the sparkles!!!)...and a nice jaunt through EPCOT with only 12000 of your closest friends :grouphug: .
:cheer2: :cheer2: Go DEBBIE, Go Debbie, Go Debbie!!!!!
Okay...now back in my corner!
Ran the Space Coast half marathon today--and my GPS died--it needed new batteries before the start finish line :( I didn't think to check that before I left home--so one more thing to add to the check list of pre-race activities.
Regarding the race and the water--I have decided that the water stations will be used to refill my water bottle. Evidently chugging water at the stops (even if I walk and do it)--causes me to get a cramp. When I switched to bottle exclusively and just refilling it as needed--the cramps went away. A cheering section--no matter if you know them or not--is incredibly motivating!!
Okay--I have to run (out the door)--but b/c I didn't have a GPS--I ran with one of my friends and kept to her 9 run/1 walk pace--I figured--she's a little faster than I--but it was better than running blind with no timing device and really really messing up my training run. I finished the half in ~2 h 21 m or so...I will have to look up the time later--so it does look like I will finish the full in wayyy less than 6--but I will certainly NOT do that pace for the full--and I'll make sure I have extra batteries!

Hi everyone
I'm back from our cruise on the Magic. It was GREAT!!!!! We had such a FABULOUS time!!!! I did manage to keep most of my promise that I made about exercising, I walked 3 times for at least 45 min. each time and I biked once on Castaway Cay, so I only missed 1 day of biking (I had a massage instead and it was heavenly). I also took the stairs all the time except when I had heals on for dinner. We were on deck 5 so that was quite a bit of stairs so that should count for some crosstraining! Today I have been busy finishing unpacking and doing mountains of laundry so I didn't get my walk in like I had planned so I better get out there tomorrow afternoon after I drop DD off at basketball practice. I haven't had a chance to read this weeks thread yet, so I'll have to make sure I do that this week. I did see Dawn's post about the lime green scarf so I signed up for one of those.
Karen I finally convinced DH to buy DVC while on the ship, or at least I think I did, now he is talking about cancelling through DVC and buying resale. I'm not too sure I'm too comfortable about doing it that way. I might PM you with some DVC questions if you don't mind.
Keep moving everyone, I can't believe how close we are getting now YIKES. Well I'm off to more laundry.

Great going everyone.
Way to go Lisa under 2 iand 1/2 hours that's impressive! That will give you plenty of time to "enjoy" the marathon and still finish in under 6 hours. Who would have guessed that we would ever be talking about "enjoying" a half marathon or a marathon.
DH and I just got back from Seattle. It was our 5th wedding anniversary so we drove down on Saturday, did some shopping, had dinner, stayed overnight at a nice hotel and came home this afternoon. Haven't done my run this weekend yet. I am scheduled for a "short" long run - 4 miles, so I should head out soon.
See you all next week!

Thanks, everyone!
I will look for that book. It sounds like just what I need to get over this down in the dumps feeling I have.
I already bought a shirt that I had printed up. I have "I finished the Half Marathon at WDW on January 9, 2005" on it! That was several months back when I thought there was still a chance! I hung it on my bedroom door supposedly to give me motivation to lose weight and get training. I planned on wearing it in the parks on 1/10/05. :guilty: Oh, how I wish I'd had them put I STARTED....., instead of I FINISHED....etc.!! Then I could still wear it and not be lying! Or if I hadn't had the date put on it and do end up finishing it some year! Oh well, I don't think it'll fit me now anyway!
I am looking forward to meeting all of you! I'll be the fat, slow (probably limping) one. :earboy2:

Debbie,
Don't give up yet. As others have already mentioned read "Marathoning for Mortals" - excellent book.
Also don't forget that there will be 1000's of people cheering you on, and other walkers will encourage you as well.
Walk as far as you can, but don't be embarrassed to stop walking, you are not giving up, you are knowing your limits!
As John Bingham says "Getting to the start line takes more courage than finding your way to the finish.
Sending pixie dust your way - do what you can and be proud of yourself!

Hi Jackie :wave2:
I had a reservation at Pop, but wasn't able to get an AP discount there. So, now I'll be at All Star Music.
Thanks, Rachael!
