Day 11 Monday 7/16/01 It can't be over!

Cast of Characters:

Me - Now referred to as Spanky thanks to Cousin Dave at 50's Prime Time. 3rd trip.
Michelle - My lovely wife who has had to endure all the changes that I've thrown at her concerning this trip. Is now starting to understand my Disney obsession. 6th trip.
Devon - An eating machine. Just turned 15 but still my baby. 3rd trip.
Jordan - Loves to have things his way. Just turned 12. 3rd trip.
Camryn - A true princess. 3 almost 4 going on 25. Now also referred to as Sugar Booger. Also thanks to Cousin Dave. Willing to try anything once. 1st trip. She is so excited.

When we got back to the hotel last night I had requested a late checkout for today. Tiffany Towncar was not suppose to pick us up until 2:30 and I was not real anxious to checkout. We did finally get moving and started to pack. We decide to run down and grab some breakfast. Last chance to grab some of those pastries from downstairs. Total today is $10.82. Back upstairs to continue the packing. I'm sure we didn't come with this much stuff. We did manage to eat almost all of the snacks that we had bought at the grocery store. All that was left was a few Oreos and a couple of juice boxes. I am glad I threw an extra carryon bag in one of the suitcases on the way down though. We manage to stuff everything back into the bags and stack everything by the door. Time for a last dip in the pool. For some reason the water feels colder today than usual. Maybe it's just me. After a couple minutes I'm use to the temperature though. Time to sit out now and dry out before we throw wet swimsuits in the suitcase. I called down to Bell Services and they were quickly there to load up the bags and put them in storage for awhile. I went ahead and checked out and we were now homeless.

We had a few hours left and still hadn't played any miniature golf. We hiked over to Fantasia Gardens and squeezed in 18 holes. The course was not crowded at all but today was going to be a scorcher. The course was a lot of fun but could use a little more shade during the day. Everyone managed to get at least one hole in one. Even Sugar Booger.

We headed back and did some exploring around the Swan. Eventually we made it back to the Dolphin and decided to grab a quick bite before heading to the airport. We stopped at the Dolphin Fountain for some lunch. Jordan is the only other person in our family that has the same passion for White Castles as I do. Now if you remember the other day when I was enjoying mine, Jordan was sick. Now he wants his share. So Jordan and I each order the Beach Boy Burgers. Michelle has a All American Grilled Cheese with bacon. Camryn the kids hot dog and Devon had the Fountain Fingers. Total came to $41.26.

Now it was time. That dreaded time. We headed back up to the lobby and our driver was soon there. He was on time and loaded our luggage into the car. Grabbed the kids and we were on our way. We were a lot quieter on our way back to the airport than when we were heading the other direction. The flight home was smooth and with no problems. Grabbed our bags and hopped on the Hilton shuttle back to our van. We had paid our kennel bill in advance. My wifes friend that was checking on our house had picked up our dogs today and dropped them off back home. She also turned the a/c back on and when we arrived the place was cool and our faithful companions were there to greet us. It helped making coming home a little easier.

Afterthoughts:

I have written these reports as much for me as anything else. It helps me to remember all of the great times we had, so thanks for pacifying me. It's amazing how quickly you forget the specifics. Even now I know there are pieces that I have forgotten to include such as the Backstage Pass, Pooh ride and Snow White. Take lots of pictures!!!!!

Tips:

This was a very special trip for us. We knew that Devon was getting to an age where he will probably start working during summer breaks and may not want to vacation with us much longer. It is also the first real vacation that we have taken with Camryn and her first trip to Disney World. As such this may have been the last vacation we have taken as a complete family. I wanted it to be something special and we did a lot of extras on this trip that we would not have done otherwise. We only take a real vacation every two or three years it seems like anyway, so we saved long and hard for this one. Tax refunds, coins in a jar, etc… We also tried to make the most of the snacks that we bought and not buy things just to buy them. We got several breaks along the way. We managed to get a great airfare and great rate at the Dolphin. It is with the help of many of the people on these boards (especially the DIS) that we were able to save dollars where we could so that we could spend them on things that mattered to us.

Our opinions are strictly that. What we enjoyed, others may hate and vice versa. When planning, take into consideration your likes and dislikes and plan accordingly. Don't do something just because everyone else does. Be flexible and not so rigid that you can't take the time to enjoy the special times. A moment only happens once and then it's gone forever. Make the most of it.

We like to hit things pretty hard. Not quite commando, but kind of a happy medium (at least to us). Know your limits and what you enjoy. There will be things that irritate you and things that thrill you as you go through each day. People cutting in line, large tour groups, etc.. You can either make the most of it or let it ruin your day. Yes we experienced all of that, but this was our trip. Other peoples own agendas and needs were not going to impact our enjoyment. Change what you can, accept the rest and go on. We were here to be a family. I wanted to see the world for possibly the last time through the eyes of my kids. Where Camryn really is a princess, Jordan is a champion fisherman, Devon is still a little boy, Cinderella really is Cinderella and Dumbo can really fly. And yes he can …….if you just let him.

Thanks.

What a nice report! Thank you for writting it. I liked your humor too! I can't wait until my new little one is old enough to go. He will be just about Camryns age. Unfortunatly, I have to wait 4 more years, as he was just born. But, the trip is already in it's planning stages. Thank you!

Wow. I have been reading all the installments as you have posted, sorry for not posting sooner. What a great trip it sounds like you all had (illnesses notwithstanding) and what great trip reports. You are a gifted writer. I am now so sad we had to cancel this Sept, so I will be traveling to the World vicariously through others.

Thanks again for these very entertaining reports

Great wrap-up, oh my eyes are misty too!!! What a great time you had. We took our family for the first time this summer, 15 yr old DS, 10 yr old DD, DH and me. It was a once in a lifetime trip but I have registered to win a trip for the Night of Joy in September with a local radio station here. Thanks for posting, I'm still working on our trip report. You're right, its very therapeuatic to write it all out and record and relive the great time and yes, to enjoy Disney through the eyes of a child.

Tombstone, I'd like to thank **you** for taking the time to share your vacation. It makes the wait till October just a little easier to bear. Plus, I learned quite a bit from your reports . . . like there's a fishing excursion from the Boardwalk for kids. That's where we're staying this fall, and I want to find out more about it. Also, your thoughts at the end are priceless. My feelings were the same when my family of nine (including kids and grandkids) went in December. Your words brought it all back, and I admit to "dripping" a little on the keyboard.

Thanks!

Thanks so much for taking time to post this trip report. I don't have time to read all the reports, so I usually do a quick glance and only really "read" the ones that are interesting. Yours DEFINITELY falls into that category!! Unfortunately such a good report made me wish I were at WDW!

How sad! You had to come home! Now there won't be anymore reports from you to look forward to. You simply must plan another experience right now:) ! By the way, don't be so sure about your oldest not wanting to travel with you anymore. Disney has a way of appealing to the kid in all of us. Our family consists of a 2 year old daughter and an 18 year old son. We just returned from a Disney land/sea cruise package. Our son was literally skipping to get on the Wonder and no one enjoyed those water mice boats like he did. We're planning our return for next August and he is already trying to work the trip aroung his college schedule! They may grow up, but Disney will always bring them home again!

Thanks for some great reports. I'm with the others about the kids. They may grow up, but they always are ready to go to Disney. We just rearranged our Dec. trip so that our oldest (a college sophomore) could take her last final. The college threw us a curve on that one. I understand about writing the report for you. I do that too. Years from now when we are getting forgetful we can read them and remember the fun!

I just read all of these in a row; what a wonderful trip and what a wonderful trip report. It made me feel as if I was there. I copied the sections on fishing and Belle's, as I plan to be taking my grandsons regularly until I'm an old woman and/or they tire of it. Always looking for a few new things to try. Thanks so much.

I also just read all the reports in a row. They are spectacular!! We all lived through your report and enjoyed every well written word. I am drying the tears as I type. I have to tell you though that getting the flu bug in WDW is my GREATEST fear, but your family seemed to handle it well. I am even looking more forward to our trip in Sept.. Thanks again!

I've been sitting here for an hour reading all your reports. I think I gained 20 lbs. just reading about all the food! Our first night will be at Chef Mickey's and riding the monorail also. We will be going Nov 11-14 (WL, courtyard view). It is our DS 's first trip. He will be almost four. I think Camryn is about 10 times more adventurous!!!!! We will also be eating at Ohana's. Thank you thank you!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, Tombstone, thanks a million. I really needed to read your trip reports. We are having to cancel our upcoming Thanksgiving trip (we're in the process of building a new house - delays, delays). On the bright side, I've rescheduled for August 2002 (but that's SO-O-O-O-O far away). Your trip reports were just what I needed to make me feel better. My eldest daughter has also just turned 15 and I felt like our next Disney trip might be our last as a family (work, college, etc. - just as you stated), but after reading some of the reply posts I have hope that even a college age "kid" will drop everything to go to WDW!! Who knows, maybe we still have a few "family" trips left for both of us!! Again, thanks...

Tombstone, I really enjoyed reading all of your posts. Your family should thank you for putting together a wonderful trip. A couple of comments: how tall is Camryn? I was a little surprised to read that she was able to ride TOT and some of the other "scary" rides. Second, what percentage of your total trip budget went towards your meals? Just curious.

Thank you for your report and the last paragraph.
You summed up perfectly what parents see and cherish in their children's trips to WDW. My brother said this weekend that Six Flags have great coasters as does many amusement parks, but no one can supply the magic of Disney.

This is, by far, the most heartfelt trip report I have ever heard. It is clear from your post's how well planned out this trip was. I am so glad you had a wonderful trip. Thanks for all the thoughtful advice. I have read many times about the Camera Shop characters, but know we will be sure to stop there!
Thank you for all your posts.

mskani,

Camryn is right at 43 inches. She is really tall for her age. That combined with she usually wore tennis shoes and she did not have a problem getting on any ride that she wanted to ride. We always told her what to expect and would tell her that she did not have to ride any ride that she didn't want to. She was a real trooper though and all along she had been telling us that she wanted to ride and do everything.

As far as percentage of the total budget (by total I mean air, hotel, tickets, souvenirs, etc...) the meal budget came to around 25%. That was at least the plan. Even at home we consider eating out entertainment and try to make it something special. We generally don't hit the fast food places, but enjoy more sit down meals. If I have to pay for it, I want to be waited on. We knew that meals were going to take a large hit in the budget, but we had planned for that. Most days I planned for $175.00 in meals for 5 people. Devon really likes to eat and it's usually not just the cheap stuff either. The days that I had special meals planned (Hoop-Dee-Doo) I knew that our expenses would be higher and planned more food dollars for those days. Now when we were actually there, we were pretty much consistently under budget. We generally spent less on breakfast than what I budgeted. Since we were running under, we added Crystal Palace to our list as well as 'Ohana's as places to eat. Still we ended up $375.00 under budget for meals over the 11 day period.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. I have enjoyed reading your responses and I very much appreciate your taking the time to read the reports. I had never written a trip report before, but it was actually a lot of fun. I am trying to convince Michelle that maybe we could sneak down next year around Christmas for a few days while the kids are out of school. Hopefully it will work out. If not, I have a ton of pictures and a lot of video tape to look at as well as these reports to take me back anytime I want to go.

Thanks again,

Wow, what a great dad and what a great report. I loved reading it. Thanks for sharing your vacation with us. It sounds like you really spent a lot of time making it a special trip. Your kids are lucky to have you as their dad. We're going in one month, we're staying at the Swan (hopefully there won't be any alarms!) and I'll be sure to take advantage of some of the tips you mentioned. Thanks again!

Thanks Tombstone for such an excellent, detailed report! I stumbled across your last day one today, so serached and found them all - wonderful!

It sounds as though you had the time of your lives, and hearing about all the food that you enjoyed whilst you were there made me so hungry i had to pop to McD's half way through reading them all just to get a little taste of the states.

So if you could change just one thing about your trip what would it of been? Apart from the illnesses that is, even though your trip did sound perfect!!

Thanks again, i hope that my first atempt at report writing in Oct is just half as good as yours!

Emmab,

If I could change just one thing is a tough question. I think I would schedule my flight a little later on the last day so that I could be at the Magic Kingdom one last time before I leave. It is always so hard that last day. Nobody really wants it to end but you know that you have to go home. That is until I win the lottery and can move to Celebration. Anyway, I think if I had planned a little something special, like the Magic Kingdom before we had to head to the airport it would have been nice. As it was, it seemed that we were just sort of filling time until they came to take us to the airport.

Good luck on your planning, and I hope you have a wonderful "holiday". The weather should be fantastic when you come. We will all be looking forward to hearing about your wedding and honeymoon at WDW!
