$12.47 a day through Alamo for a compact car?
This is a Travelers Advantage rate with a coupon.

Does anyone avoid Alamo because of the distance from the airport?

My sister's family is coming from near Pittsburgh. Here is their itinerary for traveling to Disney:

1. drive to airport shuttle company
2. take bus to airport
3. take monorail at Pittsbugh airport to gate
4. take monorail at Orlando airport to get luggage
5. shuttle bus to Alamo
6. car ride to WDW
7. First attraction - Bus ride on Kilamanjaro Safari!

Sheesh!

Depending on how many are in the family (and how much luggage) a compact may not be large enough. Rate sounds good, remember all the extras and surcharges will increase the rate alot.

Don't know your travel dates, but here are some rates I've come up for a weekly rental. (I assume that is what yours is.) All rates are before taxes & fees.

COMPACT CAR
Payless car rental : $85.49 = $12.21/day.
L& M (on airport) : $85.55 = $12.22/day.
Hertz : $89.05 = $12.72
Interamerican: $ 89.70 = 12.81/day.

18.25 per day, full size, 8 days, all taxes and surcharges and fees.
9/13/01-9/20-01.
If the rate is good, I will take the shuttle to Alamo without a second thought.
This above rate is via National using the Emerald Club membership. Will have my choice of vehicles on the Emerald Aisle.

The problem with Alamo for me wasn't the shuttle, it was the extra charge for a 2nd driver. and all the other charges that ended up being another $120 for the 10 days!!!! I only paid for the 2nd driver thinking "Oh no, what if something happened?" And then you have to add the taxes for the 2nd driver. In the end it would have been cheaper going with a rental at the airport (National) who doesn't charge for a 2nd driver if it is a spouse. Janis

How did you get such a good rate? I am only renting for 4 days 9/27 - 9/30 and am paying 36.25/day, all taxes and surchages and fees. This is using EC and Buena Vista coupon. Do you know of a better way?

Hi Tarmand,

Your rate is probably so high because you are only renting for 4 days. Weekly rates (5+ days) are always lower.

I'm paying $170 (includes tax and surcharges) with National for 9 days. (9/28 - 10/7) the base rate is $130. Still hoping it will go down a little more.
(before I found these boards I was ready to pay almost $300.....)

Tarman,

That rate is horrible! Surely you can do better than that. Call a travel agent, try Alamo's net rates, try hotwire, etc.

Please tell me you are renting a Lincoln or a convertable!

Tar,
It is because you are only renting for 4 days. Weekly rates start at a min. of 5 days.
I am using my DC rate code and my Delta air 20.00 off coupon. My base rate is 153.98- 50.80 in coupons gives me a before tax total of 103.18, taxes bring it up to 146.29 or 18.286 per day.
I was off by .03 cents in my original post. :(

I just booked a full size car for 8 days for $128.39 including everything. This was through National. My husband, son and I were going to use TTC, but at this price it will be nice to have a car, especially with a 3 year old.

If she's renting from Alamo have her join their Preferred customer program. I can't remember the name but you get to wait in a much shorter line than others. We weren't in the program and it took about 1 hr from the time we got on the alamo shuttle bus at the airport until we drove away with our car.

Alamo' s program is ***********, apparently they also have a new program called QickRent for individual reservations:)

If I rented for 5 days and turned the car in early, wouldn't they penalize me? I think I read somewhere that they would. I do want to stay with National - (1) they are in the airport and (2) we really like the emerald aisle idea. Anyway, National's rate was actually cheaper (.02 total) than any others in the airport.

Does anyone know the price of the Emerald Club and Alamo's ***********???

Right now through Disney club you can get a free emerald club membership. Look on Mousesavers.com. That is what I did and I got a full size car for 7 days from national for $128.39 including tax and everything.

Buzz 5985:
Are you sure there is no extra charge for a spouse? I'm hoping you are right. What I read on the site was that there is no extra charge for an employee/employer, associate, etc., but nothing about spouses. Did I miss something?

Are you renting for 7 days or 8 days for that rate? I am confused, you posted both 7 and 8 days.

I am renting Saturday and Noon until the next Saturday at Noon. I guess that falls under 7 days. Sorry for the confusion

Tarmand -

I am also renting from National for 4 days - Oct. 4th - Oct. 7th, but I am only paying $88.00 total (including taxes). I used my Entertainment coupon for 1 free day rental with a 3 day car rental.

Some very general replies: If you are renting the car for five days, you generally must keep it for five days. Often, that's the minimum for getting a good rate. You might be penalized if you turn the car in early, or if you used discount codes which require a 5-day rental.

Regarding spouse/second drivers at Alamo, before we signed up for ***********, I would present my Drivers License at the counter, there was no extra charge for spouse drivers. According to numerous posts, National does not impose an extra fee for the spouse of an Emerald Club member.:)
