My DD bought a cd yesterday (Ashley Simpson) and I could tell she must not have liked it because she just played it once and put it away. Usually she listens to a new one over and over again! When I asked her about it she said there are a few songs that have swearing in it so that's why she didn't like it. :D I'm proud of her for that decision but I hate that she's out $15. Just wondering if anyone knows if you can return cds. I don't think you can but thought I'd ask. She got it at WalMart, if that makes a difference.

I think you can only return them if there is something wrong (ie: won't play) with it.

It's worth a try. Give the objectionable language as the reason. Ask if you can have store credit rather than cash if they give you a problem. My Mom bought a gospal cd at FYI, the way the package read it looked like the songs were vocals. Turned out to be instrumentals only. She was debating between this one and another one. We took it back and they let her exchange it for the other one.

I bought a CD at Target today. The receipt specifically says. Return only if unopened.

I don't think there is any swearing on that CD (but I could be wrong). My DD10 listens to it, and it did not have a parental warning label on it. Although, I do cringe when she is singing along to La-La and hope she has no clue what it is about.

That is why most music only stores have listening stations. She could put it up on half.com, ebay, or something like that. She could try giving it back at Walmart, especially if the objectionable lyric sticker is NOT on the label.

I remember Walmart being a large business tied into "family value" lyrics when the PMRC was up and about in the late 80's. This fight prompted Walmart and other retailers to make the objectionable lyric sticker. Proponents of the PMRC action (namely Tipper Gore) believed that Walmart and other retailers needed to be a safe haven for children and their music.

(Yes, I did a college paper on musical censorshiP). Not that the customer service clerk at Walmart may not even know what the PMRC is/was... but they may give it back to you to avoid some stink from the corporate office.

Sometimes, there may be something wrong with the CD as well. I've returned CD's at Walmart because there was something wrong with them.

Hi Liz!!!!

Haven't seen you in a while! I hope all is well with you and yours.

I would try it...I think the most you would be able to get out if it is an exchange of some sort but it is worth the try.

and yeah for your DD! for making a choice to listen to good music!

I was a customer service manager at Walmart many moons ago (7 years). Policy was: it can only be returned for a LIKE item IF it's damaged. That's exactly alike, same title. IF you want to explain to a MANAGER about the lyrics (don't mess with the girl at the customer service counter, just ask her to get a manager) than they may exchange it for something else. It's to prevent people from buying, copying, and then returning the music/ video media. I saw managers override the 'official' policy many times.

Remember, Walmart always preaches Customer Satisfaction Guarenteed!

Liz: If I were her parent, I would offer to buy it from her for what she paid. It's worth the $15 to reinforce her good decision.

If you want to double check, I'm sure you can find the lyrics to the song via google. As far as I can tell, AS's main claim to fame is being the less-talented sister of a B-list MTV celebrity, so it's not surprising that the CD has gone unplayed.

Wal-Mart does not sell CDs with cursing in them. It's their policy. The only sell the cleaned up version of those CDs. So you might not want to use that reason for a return.

Its pretty much a cut and dry situation for returns on DVD, CD's and Video games...

A) Unopened you can return and get money back

B) Opened you can only exchange for the same title.

You may be able to talk to Walmart Managers as stated. Usually the Cd's specifically say "clean" or "edited" on the side lable to denote the selection is free of any objective lyrics. I am not sure if walmart changed but I have bought several CD's there with objective language on them (most recent one being 2 weeks ago, SIMPLE PLAN's Latest)... Sometimes the clean versions just wreck the sound of the disk all-together (throw in a clean Eminem and see what you get ;) )

Definetly talk to a manage, they might work something out for you.

Seeing how Ashlee is the "punk" version of her sister Jessica, I use the word punk very loosely by the way, she could have some questionable lyrics... I just ran throug the lyrics on her CD "audiobiography" and this is all I could find:

Song: Autobiography

Lyric: I'm a bad *** girl in this messed up world
Lyric: You piss me off, good-bye

Ashlee has a hard voice to follow sometimes, could it be that she thinks she is swearing when she really isn't? Then again the songs could also be different from what the lyrics say aswell.

GOOD LUCK!
