First timer at islands of adventure

I am planning to go to islands of adventure with my husband and two children in the first of August. I am a disney pro but a universal novice. Are the express passes like fast pass at disney? Do they pass them out at the attraction or do you have to go to a different location. We are not staying at a Universal Hotel. With everyone getting to cut in line is it just a nightmare if you are just a day guest. Any tips will be appreciated. Thanks, Kristin
