I know we had a thread here a while back about spending the refund we are all getting. But I am just curious, has at this point in time, has everyone gotten a letter saying what they were going to be getting? I am one of the live life on the wild side, who spent my windfall before I got it... but now I haven't gotten the letter yet... So, who's gotten a letter from the IRS, and who hasn't?

We received ours last week. Seems your refund checks will be sent out according to your last 2 numbers of the social security number used to file your Federal return. Our SS # is fairly low, and we are scheduled for a check to arrive by 8/20.

We got our letter last week - but its not really a letter - more like one of those things you get that are often bills - you know you have to fold and tear the sides to open. It almost looks like junk mail although it does say on there that it is from the IRS and is important tax payer information! I wonder if they are mailing them out in batches close to when your refund is being sent out - we get ours the week of August 3.

IF you are getting any return you should have rec'd notice by now.
We are one of the lucky ones who rec'd notification that we will
receive the full $600 end of July. Seems there are different amts
other than the $300-500-600 talked about.....depending on your
income/status/how much pd in, etc. I'm hearing some not getting
anything, others only getting $5. Between this (thank you George)
and honey's 4 wks vacation $'s he's saved up ~ we are blessed to
afford a trip for our retirement, a 'once in a lifetime' trip to Europe.
We're also pinching pennies for our first family Disney Cruise for 2002 ! :D

Yes that's right $26.00 Our letter said $600 so I called the irs & got their automated ssevice which explained that
I could figure out the amount by looking @ line 39 of my return & figuring 5% of taxable income. They said the rebate would be the lesser of the 2. My % is over $600. Any tax experts that can explain this to me????

We received our letter last week telling us that we were getting the maximum amount. The check was in the mailbox today. It is now safely tucked away with my airplane tickes to Orlando. My husband and I are taking a 5 day trip without the children. It is our first trip by ourselves without them. After 15 years I think we deserve it. What do you think???? We got our notice saying we will get the $600 in mid-September. They are going by the last two digits for your social security number begining with 00-09. My hubbys is 85 so we are pretty much near the end I would think.

Maybe you should check out the IRS site and see about it.

I am positive we qualify for the rebate, and we moved two months before we filed our tax return so that can't be the problem. We still have not received the letter. I have been calling the number posted above for three days, but I either get a message that they are not accepting any calls right now due to "high call volume", or I get disconnected after spending ten minutes making my way through their phone "system". I've tried EVERYTHING to get a real live person, even hitting the "wong" numbers and pretending I am calling about another issue. Their "customer service" is unreal.

Well dh's SS# ends in 97... so we have to wait till the last week to get our $600. Which, coincidentally, is the week we'll be in WDW! friskykitten. It is based on how much you paid in. The more taxes you pay the more you get back. For those who paid minimum or no taxes, they get minimum or no refund. Sorry!

BTW, my SSN ends in 08, we got our $600.00 on Tuesday of this week!

Well, I'm happy to say we are getting the full refund back, $600. But it is scheduled to get here the first week of Sept, the same week we will be in WDW. Oh well, I guess maybe that way I won't spend it while we're there! (Yeah, right!)

I am an accountant and it is confussing to me too. My letter stated $500 but I got less then this but I knew the letter was wrong. The amount you get back is the amount you actually paid. Look at your 1040 and find the line that says TOTAL TAX, line 35 on the 1040A. This is the amount that you would recieve, up to your max of 300/500/600. You will not get more back then you paid in 2000. Do not confuse the amount you paid with the amount that might have been deducted from your paycheck. It is the actual amount you paid ni 2000 wheather you wrote a check on April 15 or paid through the deduction from your pay.

My "rebate" is going to pay for my car registration, and summer care for my girls. But at least I don't have to dip into the "disney fund"

Did you actually send in the change of address for with your return? You may have to do that as I am not sure whether it goes through properly just because you wrote it on your return. You can print forms from the irs website (I think it's irs.gov or something like that.) Turbotax prompted me to submit the correct form.

Our local newspaper ran an article on the front page today, about where these rebates are coming from! I was quite surprised to find that this actually isn't a rebate of taxes you have already paid, its an advance on the refund you'll get when you file your return next year! I guess no one explained this to me before, or I just hadn't payed enough attention to this.

I was taken aback a little, thinking this was from over paid taxes from last year. It means that my refund in April of next year will be $300 less of whatever I am due, or if for unlucky reasons, you owe taxes, it could mean you owe $300 more! The new 1040 form will be devised so that its nearly impossible to see how your rebate checks will affect your tax preparing for 02. Seems that somehow buried in the tax tables, it will be figured in, so you won't really realize it!

This supposedly is to give us the benefit of an 01 tax break as soon as possible. Rather than have to wait until next April, we are getting it now. Wow, so much for a "gift" from the government of overpaid taxes.

I guess I hadn't listened too well. My mother always said beware of getting something for nothing.

Yes this is in fact going to cut the amount you will receive back in April. But From July 1 - Dec 31 the amount of taxes being deducted from your check should be less, also. This "rebate" is in effect a rebate of taxes you already paid THIS YEAR! because Bush cut taxes (and a lot of good programs along with them). So the amount of tax you owe for 2001 will be less, so the amount that you prepaid, through payroll deductions, are less too. As for oweing more in April, my understanding is that even if they over paid you with this rebate, you will not have to pay it back. So you will not owe more in April, just receive less back in Arpril because you already got it back (or will have gotten it back)

From my understanding funding for the Boys and Girls Club of America was cut (both my girls attend our local chapter), funding for WIC (women infants and children) - they help low income familys with nutriton and food, and several other programs aimed at our youth. I didn't recall the cuts to the Boys and Girls Club. But I thought the bulk of funding cuts to social programs came during the Clinton administration when time limits were set for benefits during Welfare Reform.

Thanks, LKS, I finally got through to the IRS and they did have our change of address from the box we checked on our return. The agent could see that our tax return was processed just two weeks ago, although he couldn't understand what caused the delay. He verified that we qualified for the rebate, and said our check might be a few weeks late.

There was an article in the Wall St Journal yesterday about the missing letters. It seems that the folks who had to send a check in when they filed (ours was for less than $10) had their returns processed in July. That is why they haven't received their letters yet. I'm not sure why they didn't inform the employees answering the phones. Our agent was very nice, and seemed genuinely puzzled about our missing letter.

No I haven't gotten mine yet. However DH said that we have to rememeber that it is around the 1st of the month and that is when alot of bills, Social Security, Welfare checks and the like are sent out!! I am still getting paranoid though!! I am just glad to see that I am not the only one that hasn't gotten it yet!! Makes feel a little better!! Although I just wish it would get here!! I will feel 100% better once it gets here!!

SheDaisy, not that it's going to help you feel any better but at the post office one of the workers started talking about how mail in Florida tends to be slower. (Someone was tracking a package they sent.) He said it's because there is so much development and so many people who move back and forth and have mail forwarded, etc.

We never got the letter but I just knew that we qualified for the full $600. DH finally called the IRS (and actually talked to a real person!!!) they looked up our account and said that we would be getting $600, mailed on September 3rd. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I wonder why some people didn't get the letter???? We plan to use the $600 as spending money for our December trip to WDW.

Just talked to the IRS and they said that we received an incorrect letter and that we would not receive the full amount and it is not being mailed until a later date. What a bummer!!! They explained everything to me and based on the return I can understand it but I was counting on the full refund. I guess you can't count on it until you get it. I was just planning on using it for bills, I would have felt really bad if it was for a trip or something. At least we are getting something back, it is better than nothing. I just don't know how they can send letters that are so incorrect. Not one thing listed on it was correct. Based on the social security number we should have received it last week and they are saying it isn't even due to be mailed out until the 10th. Just makes you a little angry. The man at the IRS I spoke with the first time I called was not very nice. He told me if I have a complaint that I should write my congressman. Like that would get me more money!!!

After reading your post I called the IRS. I was told that mine was mailed out on July 30th. I am getting the full amount. SO WHERE THE HECK IS IT ALL READY!!!? Maybe the mail is slower here in FL, we have so many more people here than most states. Hey we have it all here, the sun, the surf and the most important thing-----DISNEY WORLD!!!!!

LOL!! Seriously though they told me to give it 3 weeks from the date that it was mailed--- in case it was not mailed out on the exact date!! Sounds to me like they are not sure when it was mailed out!!
