Since this is my first entry, I'll tell you about me, if you want to know.

42 years old. Married almost 6 years. Twin 3 year old girls... love 'em!..... I work for FOX television. Same job for last 13 years. Need to lose 100 pounds! YIKES!!!! Love travel, though Disney doesn't rank extremely high on my list. I love adventure stuff. We spent part of our honeymoon in a thatched hut in a rainforest!. Now THAT is my idea of a vacation! But I like to explore cities, too.

Theme parks are not my "thing". I love sports and play some, still. And I like being involved in fantasy fooltball and baseball leagues. And I am a music junkie. Everything but opera and hard core rap.

Above all else, my wife would agree, I am an electronics junkie. If it makes noise, computes, or shows images, I have to own it. It is like an addiction. For example, we have 7 TVs in our house, 7 DVD Players, 4 computers, a video editing system ( 2 actually ), 3 camcorders, an iPod........ and the list goes on and on and on.......

Now on to my journal.

Today is day 2 of my workout program. At first I was REALLY discouraged. Yesterday I had a nice workout --- first one in a year --- and I ate well. 1600 calories plus exercise. Sounds great, right? Well, I woke up and weighed myself and I was 3 POUNDS heavier than yesterday. I was discouraged. But I was also determined.

I went to the gym and had an even better workout than yesterday. Far better. I was pleased. Cut almost 3 minutes off of my mile time on the treadmill. Heart rate was even lower than yesterday.

Cool.

Feel free to reply. Thanks, and wish me luck.

:wave2: Hi Carl,
Welcome to the Wish journals :D . You will find lots of wonderful people here to encourage you and answer questions ::yes:: .

Please don't let yourself get discouraged by the scale. It's normal to fluctuate day to day. I know it's tough but try to only weigh yourself once a week. That way you will see some results and not get discouraged.

Good luck  !

:wave2: Hi Chuck!!

Here's another welcome to the WISH Journal board!

I hope you're feeling better about your workouts and not worrying about your weigh-ins for the moment. You see, when you exercise and eat right, weight loss is a natural side effect.

Are you drinking lots of water?? That will really help you!

I'm not too far from you - live closer to Harrisburg & Hershey area, but I've been spending way too much time at the King of Prussia mall lately! :D

Hope today is a terrific Wednesday! :sunny:

THank you Doreen. I'm 5 minutes from the KOP mall but I hardly ever go there!

I'll be here for a while!

Hi Chuck :wave2:

Welcome to the WISH journals. You have made a great start. Keep up the great work.::yes:: I want to suggest that you take some measurements. It really helps when the scale doesn't cooperate. Measure every 2 weeks or monthly. That alone has kept me on track sometimes.

Well, today is day 4. I didn't go to the gym yestersday because I had to take my twins to the doctor and it ran long. But I had another good eating day. I upped my calories to about 1900.

But as I am now, and always will be, a slave to the scale, I checked my weight again. UP another half pound. So, since starting exercise on Monday, I am now up 3.5.... after losing 5 pounds last week.... pre - exercise.

I know the whole muscle weighs more than fat but I doubt I converted a whole lot of fat into muscle after about 4 hours of exercise over 3 days.

Frustrated but determined, it is off to the gym again today, in less than an hour.....

Hi Chuck!

Welcome to the WISH journals!:bounce: You have made a great start and your determination will help you to succeed!::yes::

I totally agree with Beth about the measurements thing. Some weeks when I don't post a loss on the scale, I am still able to feel like I've accomplished something when my measurements went down. Even if it was only 1/2 of an inch.;)

Keep up the good work, Chuck! You can do it!

Have a great Thursday!

Keep your chin up. I am also a slave to the scale and that isn't necessarily a good thing. Get out that tape measure and be sure to measure at least once a week. It will help keep your spirits up!

THursday, Day 4.

Well, I got to the gym and started cardio. I just couldn't "loosen up" on the treadmill. I was really struggling. I did a half mile and went to the cross trainer. I love those! Then my body / cardio started to kick in. I did another 15 minutes there.

On to about 20 - 25 minutes of lifting. Strenuous, but not all out effort yet. By the end of next week I feel like my body will have adapted to exercise again. A "solid" if unspectacular effort.

But then I went back to doing cardio for 5 minutes at full intensity. I was covered in sweat, heart rate was about 150 + or -.

All in all it was a good day so far. Just wierd how "aerobically tight" I was at the beginning. I almost quit.

I am determined.

Hi Chuck,

It may be that you have used up your energy reserves. you have dopped your calories significantly, so your body was using your glycogen stores for energy. I know you aren't doing lc, but it is around day 3-5 that people feel lousy when they start lc. I think your body is just adapting to your change in calories, and that is why you struggled today. Despite that, you put in your time. Great job.

I hope tomorrow is easier.

Today is November 1st.

The treadmill and I just don't get along. We never play nice together. Once again I had to move to the cross trainer before I loosened up.

I had a very solid workout today. I did 11 minutes on the treadmill and 27 minutes on the cross trainer. I had a nice pace going and could have done more but I feel like I am still working into the daily routine of exercise.

I also did a lifting session today. I need to push myself harder here, but at age 42 I plan to take my time. If I rush I just know I'll get hurt or frustrated so I will get there in time.

I am determined.

BTW, still NO WEIGHT LOSS. Eating like I should and working out. I will stay the course.

I am determined.

Well, I screwed up yesterday. Not too bad but it was because of frustration. I GAINED another pound! Basically until yesterday I was doing great. And though I haven't taken my measurements, some of my clothes actually feel tighter!!!

Then yesterday afternoon I almost got hit by a car right after voting. I twisted out of the way and my back all knotted up, to the point where it was very hard to breathe.

Today I am much better but didn't want to work out so as to give my back a chance to get better. Tomorrow, Thursday, I plan to go all out.

Plus I am considering WW online. No offence, but I can't see me in a meeting with a bunch of elderly ladies talking weight loss. And at the one near me, that is what it is amost exclusively, elderly women. My source for that info is a friend of my mom's.... and she is 63.

Extremely frustrated.... but I am determined.

Chuck

EDIT: I have now GAINED four pounds since starting my "diet"! And I have been very good, if you believe my posts.

Today I had a GREAT workout. I did 2 miles on the crosstrainer at a very good clip. And as usual, I had my daily battle with the treadmill. I don't get it. Walking should be easier that doing a crosstrainer!

I also had a very good session lifting weights.

I am pleased.

I am determined.

Hi Chuck and Welcome!

Keep hanging in there and like everyone has said, the weight will come off. I love the cross trainer machines. I usually start with weights, do my cardio and then walk on the treadmill. Sometimes it is hard to get modivated when you start your work out on the treadmill.

Good luck!!!

Val, thanks for asking. I am doing "ok" , not great. Still not losing at all. I missed the gym for the last 3 days but that was due to things beyond my control.

I have my mother coming over tomorrow to watch my kids just so I can head out to the gym.

I'm starting to enjoy going again. I used to go 3 hours a day and I really liked it on most days. For me, the hard part is getting there cuz once I go I do like it after I get into it.

I'll do this. I am determined.

Thanks for caring enough to ask!

Chuck - Don't push yourself at the gym too much. Even if you can only go for an hour, make it a good workout. You don't want to get bored or over do your workouts.

Hang in there!!!!

Hi Chuck! I just got a chance to read through your journal. I'm sorry that you aren't seeing results inspite of your efforts. I know that is horribly frustrating. You have such a great attitude though, you seem very motivated and very driven. With that, you will have success even if it takes awhile to see it. Good luck to you! :)

FINALLY... I lost 1 pound. Why this is so hard, I don't know. At one time in my life I could easily lose 5 - 7 pounds a week without exercise.

Today I did a little less cardio but a whole lot more weight lifting.

I did:

2 sets of chest press

2 sets of shoulder press

2 sets of rowing

2 sets of lat pull-downs

2 sets of curls

and 2 sets of something else I can't remember.

also I did a set of 25 crunches and a set of 15 crunches

Tomorrow will be "lower body"....

as long as my kids cooperate. They have been out of daycare all week, each with a different "sickness'. And they have MRI's scheduled for Friday so I need to get them healthy.... hence, we kept them home from daycare.

Anyway, fingers crossed that I can get my workout in tomorrow!

Thanks Val. No results yet, and actually they could only do the MRI on Abby. Emily had too much congestion and they decided to wait til her bout with bronchitis is done.

The bad part was, and this was REALL hard to watch, Abby had a hard time coming out of anastesia. She woke up as scheduled but then spent 2 hours VIOLENTLY thrashing and yelling. Finally she wore herself out and went to sleep. She slept at the hospital for about 2 hours then came home. She was still freaked out that she couldn't walk right and was still dizzy.

Then she had dinner, watched a little TV, and then went to bed for 13 more hours! Really scary. But when she woke up whe was as good as new. The hospital told us that this reaction happens in about 2 - 3% of all kids coming out of anastesia.

Now we have to reschedule Emily for the same procedure about 3 weeks from now. Hopefully she won't go through that.

Hope you are doing well, too.

Just me again, checking in. Any results yet? I hope Emily does not have a reaction to the anastetia.

Val,

Well, Abby, it turns out, just has a ahiry spot on the base of her spine, I expected this but it is a relief. I'm sure that Emily is probably the same. I come from a family that has a bunch of very hairy men!

Thanks for asking.
