Hey there, hi there, ho there! (where?)

Working hard at getting caught up and ready to take leave for a while. Had to dig out the long johns. Snow predicted for the first two days I'm there.
I think I will be dreaming of warm sand every night..........

Not much else going on.

I did not add my 2 cents' worth on the main boards...Mark & Mary said it well enough.
CONGRATS ON 2000, TFD! Once a pirate: always a pirate: , eh Matey?

Time for bed....one more day at work, and then it's packing time. Darn, why couldn't it be for a cruise?????

Have you read the "carafe" thread? That was an argument that I should not have even started, but it sure was fun!

I'll have to take a look at the thread that Mark and Mary mentioned. I'm sure Mark and Mary could use some support.

I agree... if it were 80 degrees, calm seas, and a light breeze for 7 straight days, those same people would be complaining the the sheets were too rough, the towels weren't quite right, or that the "daquiri's were too fruitiful" (thanks, Jimmy B).

Sharon - can you explain the difference between optional and compulsary. I would think the optional one would be the one on pins and needles with not knowing when/where they are needed. So i must have the definitions wrong. :)

Compulsary Gymnastics are Level 4-6. The routines on each of the four events (Floor, Bars, Beam & Vault) are predetermined by US Gymnastics Association and are identical through out the country.

Level's 7 - 10 are called Optionals because the Gymnast can make up their own routines within the guidelines of what type of elements must be in the routine and the "start" values would be. (Max "10"). You are seeing the best of Level 10's (called Elite) when you see the girls at the Olympics. Lisa's goal is to be an elite when she is in High School. She is currently competing Level 8. :cheer2: :cheer2:

No, thank goodness.

So I get the usual weekly call from the school nurse, telling me that DD isn't feeling well and wants to come home. I tell her to go back to class... which she does, for an hour, and then claims to be so sick that she is 'too dizzy' to walk back to the nurse's office. (so they send a wheelchair for her... Miss MELODROMATIC!!!!)... I now have her at home (at the nurses' insistence), and she's on the couch, watching Princess Diaries 2:cutie: , like nothing ever happened...

She despises her teacher:sad2: ... and so do I... we are 'toughing out' the year, as I think that requesting a class change just because of a personality conflict sends a kid the wrong message... we all have to work with/deal with people that we don't like. I am sure that this has something to do with it... thankfully there are only 4 months left of this year. We 'toughed it out' with a 2nd grade teacher. She sent notes home like '...is distracted in class because of his grandmother's illness.' '...is distracted in class because of his grandmother's death.' '...is distracted in class because of upcoming (WDW) vacation.' DUH! He might not, but I remember when I had to come home "sick." There was no TV, no phone, no computer, no DVD's (like those last two even existed back then) I was stuck on the couch with MAYBE a book. It was pretty darn boring and I usually didn't come home unless I was TRULY sick.

I had one of those EVERY year. My worst was high school algebra. Terrible teacher and it was a battle of the wits every day with her (luckily I always won--although she never did admit that!)

Ya think if a kid has a personality conflict with at least one teacher every year that maybe it could be the kid??? NAH!!!

I have decided that its NOT hypochondria this time... she had to stop watching the movie about 10 times to visit the bathroom... and she looks like she just saw a ghost... pale as pale can be... so I guess she DOES have the germs that the rest of us had over the weekend... :sad2:

This teacher gives out 'demerits'... she got one today for YAWNING. Give me a break... earlier in the year, I expressed my concern to this teacher about the fact that Elizabeth really didn't know long division, and her answer was, "Well, none of these kids do this year..." I immediately asked her, "Well, what are YOU going to do about it??" :confused3 (She was totally taken aback...GOOD!!) HELLO... if the ENTIRE class isn't good at something, or doesn't 'get' an important concept, isn't it the teacher's responsibility to do something about it? Now, I have a Master's degree in education... I don't think I am out in left field on this one!

I have to agree with that, but with this statement, I think I would be changing teachers VERY quickly. I appreciate your determination to teach your DD a life lesson, but it sounds to me like the teacher needs a "lesson" herself! Have you discussed this with the administration?

Been there, done that- I could have changed her out of there early on, however, I think its too late now, with more than 1/2 the school year over... I think it would be more disruptive to her than necessary... she's still on the Honor Roll, so its not like she's failing. Honestly, I think that she and her best friend get 'targeted' by the teacher just because they are best friends. At open house on the night before school started, she had the two of them seated next to each other... me and the other girls mother BOTH told her that that was a mistake, and to separate them, but she didn't... until they got themselves into trouble for talking... c'mon- they're 10- of COURSE they're going to talk if you put them together!!!! :hyper2:

Your right about the timing at this point. But, I would still have to make MY displeasure known!

We had a situation when Alicia was much younger and I put my foot down. She was moved, and did much better after that. I would be in that teachers face, which might not be the most productive move. :confused3 However she would know EXACTLY how I felt about the situation and know that she was being watched.

Hey Mike... got a cure for hypochondria???

I do.

I make them some miserable when they come home that they would rather be in school.

If they need to come home, they are really sick.

No TV, they spend the rest of the day/night in their room in bed. No night time events, no videos, no nothing except rest.

I didn't realize how bad it had gotten until one day....
"Matt, how was school"
"It was okay. I throw up today"
"Why didn't you call us"
"You would have said to tough it out. So I did"
Parents feel like bad parents.

That's why I always send her back to class... she almost never gets away with me picking her up--- today the nurse insisted that I take her home... now she is genuinely sick, so I guess she was right.

Last year, I told my son that he wasn't sick enough to stay home... he walked into the classroom and threw up on the floor. (OK... so maybe he WAS sick)... Yeah- THAT one got me Mother of the Year at S. C. Elementary!!!!:rolleyes1

Yeah, it's a tough call. I think I fought with every other teacher in elementary, mostly about curriculum. But we only moved her once, in 1st grade. Alicia was going to the nurse every single day, wasn't sleeping well, and getting headaches. I kept asking her if she liked her teacher, she would say yes. She claimed she liked school. About six weeks in, we find out that the teacher had a habit of screaming at the six year olds in her class, and had really gone off on Alicia one day. I only found out about it because two other parents witnessed it and took their kids out of the class. We got her moved, and tried to explain to her "it is NOT OK for anyone, even a teacher, to scream at you like that. If it ever happens again, you need to tell us". A couple of years later, the new principal told me that I needed to let my daughter learn to deal with difficult people (when I was objecting to her placement in the classroom of a screaming 3rd grade teacher). Hello? Why would that be? When you are an adult, you don't put up with abusive people in your life unless you're a doormat. Why would we want to teach our kids to be doormats?

:flower: You are right, too. She has 2 teachers- they team teach, and one of them is very good... if I take her out, she loses both... the other teacher has really fostered her love of reading even more than ever, so I try to balance the good with the bad.

well, we all spent most of the evening crying.

the beast is out of control and is about ready to be shipped back to the breeder---but breaking our kids' hearts was not in my gameplan so i'm having trouble making the actual call.

plus mike's mom has found out she has a very very large mass in her lower abdomen. she sees a gyn-onc doc tomorrow and we'll know a little more, but won't know for sure probably until it's taken out. the risk of advanced ovarian cancer looms in the back of our minds based on symptoms. so please keep Grandma Lightbulb in your prayers if you would.

Gee, look, it's midnight, and I finally get to post!

It's been raining all day, so my satellite connection is out. Using dial-up. I'd forgotten how slow it is. But it's better than nothing. A lot of people in town lose phone service in the rain.

I could start in on the whole teacher thing, but you all said it very well.
Megan was our "drama queen".....and still is.
If the nurse calls for Jordan, I KNOW she's sick. And the nurse has never called me for Jared. Ever. He was bummed because missing those couple of days for the 10 night blew his perfect attendance.

Starting to get a little worried about the creek, and whether or not I will get out for my flight Friday...(tomorrow now)
Yes, Diana, I will have my lap top, and I plan on using it! Last summer Mom complained if I was on it, but this time, she can't wander in and check on me! :dancer:  :cold: :hourglass :shamrock:

I just discovered we have MORE new smilies!!

:disrocks: :ssst:
There's one up there of me freezing in Nebraska...and a shamrock for my birthday (1 hour after St Patrick's Day...and Irish, too)

I love it! But going to bed now. I can yak all day tomorrow. In between laundry and throwing some sweats in a suitcase.

Jay and the kids got out this morning, but it's been rising steadily. It's not raining right now, and isn't supposed to for the rest of today, so I think by the time they need to come home it will be okay. And it will be okay for me to get out tomorrow.

Your mom would call protective services on us then. DDs LOVE to be tickled and when you stop they say "Do it again!" :cutie:

I don't like hearing that they don't want to be loved on any more. Guess we better enjoy it while it lasts! Emily is now 4.5 and I'm realizing that she's not my little girl any more  ... although she has moved from being a "Daddy's girl" to being a "Mommy's girl".

Kikipug, sounds like you need to go spy on that classroom. Something that teacher is doing seems to be giving your DD an ulcer. Some kids are just more sensitive than others. Even if the teacher isn't yelling at her specifically, she may be living in fear.

And I think I agree with your Mom about tickling. It was better though, than the tossing into the air when she was little.

Stacey, tell Sharon we're all thinking about her. I know I met her in Vegas, but can't remember which lady she was. Can you tell me where she is in our group picture, if it's still on Mary's site?

OM, I know that was a hard decision, but it's probably best. Maybe Maggie could be trained, but it would take a lot more than you have time for, and there's no guarantees. We never got another dog after our Schipperke experience. We have only one cat, but he's the "best cat ever" and he loves us all equally. And cats are SO EASY compared to dogs, especially puppies.

WOW. I invited my brother's family to WDW this summer, adding a second bedroom to our BCV reservation. I figured maybe I could talk my SIL, niece and nephew into it, but my BROTHER said he would go. This is a very big deal. He's not a big walker, because he's a big guy.

And yes, Mary does still have the picture up. Sharon is standing right behind Brittany, in the white blouse and black skirt. Her daughter is Kaylah, with the darker hair and rounder face.

My friend Sharon called from the hospital. Bad news. Ken has a cancerous tumor that is inoperable. In the frontal lobe. I am hoping there will be some advances in that area in that time.

Update on Grandma Lightbulb....she went to the gyn/onc today. He says it's 50-50 if it's malignant. Will do surgery Feb 7th and will do pathology tests on the various sections of it. If it's not cancer, it all comes out and she goes on her way. If it is, he needs to open her up farther (like to her breast bone) and take out all connected parts and lymph nodes and the likes. Leaving no stone unturned...he'll search it all. Then it will be the whole chemo route, but I guess we can't worry about that until we find out what we're dealing with.

Thanks for all of the prayers!

At an early age KT began calling Karen's mom "Grandma Shadow" because Shadow was the name of their dog. At about that same age, KT recieved a gift from my mom - a toy flashlight that could shine in three different colors. We had just purchased a new floor lamp for my mom and the LIGHT gifts were exchanged. KT began calling her "Grandma Lightbulb" and the name stuck.

KT also named our cat DINGLE around that time.

Grandma Shadow, Grandma Lightbulb, Dingle - now you know why we homeschool. ;) <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Some extra info about us: We are on Deck 7 forward, I just can't remember the cabin number. This will be our 3rd Disney cruise, and the only family vacation we can all agree on. We love late-seating! I'll try to convince anyone to switch. Jake (11) and Katie (9) love the clubs and will spend many hours in them. Written by Ritchie Adams & Mark Barkan

One banana, two banana, three banana, four
Four bananas make a bunch and so do many more.
Over hill and highway the banana buggies go
Comin' to bring you the Banana Split show
Makin' up a mess of fun, makin' up a mess of fun
Lots of fun for everyone

(CHORUS)
Tra la la, la la la la
Tra la la, la la la la

Four banana, three banana, two banana, one
All bananas playin' in the bright warm sun.
Flippin' like a pancake, popping like a cork
Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper an' Snork

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Two banana, four banana, one banana, three
Swingin' like a bunch on monkeys, hangin' from a tree.
Hey there, ev'rybody, won't you come along and see
How much like Banana Splits ev'ryone can be

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Makin up a mess of fun
Makin up a mess of fun
Happiness for ev'ryone
Tra la la, la la la la
Tra la la, la la la la
Tra la la, la la la la

That is a good picture. Stuarts Cove?

Quick check of the our threads, then is off to Blue Hole for the weekend diving.

The forecast does not look great!

Today: Scattered showers after 5pm. Increasing clouds, with a high around 53. West wind 5 to 15 mph becoming southeast. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Tonight: Scattered rain showers before 11pm, then occasional snow. Low around 27. Southeast wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Sunday: Occasional snow. High near 34. :cold: East wind between 5 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Looks like the water will be MUCH warmer at 62° than the air :earseek:

Amanda, how are y'all doing in Columbus? Guess you're not one of the ones without power since you posted this morning. We won't be getting out the house today .... maybe not until tomorrow afternoon from the sound of things. The rain/ice is still coming down off and on. It's going to be a fun day trying to keep the girls occupied today.

All I have to say is ... weather people are wrong too many times! They said that the sleet would be over before the morning hours and that we'd be in the 50s by tomorrow. Now they're saying not above freezing today & only in to the 40s tomorrow ... UGH! This is not my kind of weather!!! Here's wishing for some warmth & sun!!! :sunny:

Hi CajunGirl2,

Now, I know I'm going to catch heat for this one, but when I die, I want to come back as a MAN, for sure, but the best job I think is the meteorologist!!! What better thing in life to be is a man - meteorologist? You NEVER have to be right. What are they going to do, fire you???? :rotfl2: So the front stayed South instead of moving North. It snowed ALL DAY instead of 1/2 day. It's a great job. That's my wish for reincarnation!!!

Now all you men, don't burn me..I want to be one of you on my next try. I love my husband to death but I want to try something new next time. Having 4 older brothers, no sister and then having 2 boys of my own, no daughter, it seems to be my destiny to be surrounded by testosterone. Being a stay-at-home mom, soon to be working Part Time in the schools, is great but has it's moments. How many of you agree with me? Don't be shy about it. Come on.

WDWLVR - thanks for making me feel welcome. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you on the sunny, beautiful MAGIC cruise.

Have a great day today.

Hi Everybody,

WE just booked the 5/27/06 Special Western cruise and we're happy to be here. It's me, DH, and DS (9), and DS (5). We'll all be a little older by the time we cruise. You guys seem to be having a lot of fun and I want "IN". Is it possible? :confused3 I know our cruise is a ways away, but planning for me is half the fun. We were assigned cabin #6558. Has anyone of you veterans ever stayed there?

Well, I hope I can join in the fun with you guys. I love these boards. Happy planning.

Ugh, ice ice and more ice! The kids had testing this morning at 730 am! (For their green belts in TaeKwonDO) Uhmmmm it was very cold!! BRRRR When we got home, I lay down and the kids said mom mom the tree in our yard fell!!! I got up and looked, sure enough, tree fell in my driveway. The weight of the ice was just to much for it to bear. DH is working today and there is no way I could have handled it. Luckily, my neighbor, (who I havent said 2 words to in like 3 years) came knocking on my door and offered to pull it out of my way with his truck and cut down some of the lower branches with his chainsaw. Bear in mind, it is still COLD outside. I feel so bad, I am so greatful to him for doing that, but as I said earlier I have rarely spoken to these people. We stay so busy with work and the kids that we pretty much keep to ourselves, once at home. Any ideas on how to thank the guy? I felt guilty here nice and warm and dry in the house, and him out there clearing *MY* driveway.....

I hate to say this (he's not here to defend himself), but Kevin is a GUY. He might succumb to peer pressure. And you know how persuasive Jim can be. I know there are sharks off the FL coast, but you won't go looking for them, will you? If anyone could attract sharks, it would be my kid. You should see what happens when there are any mosquitoes around.

I've got three girls here tonight. Alicia's partners for her lyrical trio are spending the night, we are going to watch a comp here tomorrow that they didn't enter. Checking out the competition for the next one! Three gifted girls, the other two are perfectionists (mine missed that trait). One girl is alphabetizing Alicia's bookshelf, the other is doing her Math homework. Life is good.

A very quick hello to say I made it to Omaha, and have not frozen yet. It's really not that bad (the temperature).

Mom is home now and much happier here than in the rehab...can't say as I blame her, it was a depressing place.
She did well today but woke up tonight with some muscle spasms....we got her comfy again and I think she's asleep.

When you are done with the girls would you please send them this way. Matt could use a little help and I'm sure the girls would be preferred over Sharon and I helping him.

Kevin is a guy, but when it comes to diving he won't break his rules. We all having diving rules, things and situations we won't put ourselves in. No other diver (a good buddy) would force anyone to break one of their rules.....so you can bet on Kevin not taking Alicia on a shark dive.

I am still looking for suggestions on how to thank my neighbor for helping me out yesterday. Stacey, glad to see that you have made it to your mom's house safe and sound! Right there is the down side of living in Florida...having to do yardwork year around.

We just finished with ours so the front of the house is bare. Not a bush, tree, plant....nothing.

Now I am looking for some advice. Has anyone had any experience with the new Silk/PCV outdoor plants that are UV resistant? We want to put something outfront, but it can not be anything that is living. I've been looking at outdoor silk plants. Any suggestions/ideas?

Yes, I am serious. I/we hate yard work. Would pave it all if I could.

We had a very similar discussion while standing in our front yard today... I want to rip out everything along my walk and put in stone... stone doesn't grow weeds. I can deal with trimming the palms and hibiscus, but weeding makes me crazy!!! I swear that Middleton plants weed-seeds in hopes that we'll sign up for their maintenance plan.

Don't be fooled. We took the stone out because of the weeds. I have always been a big believer in stone. It's great for a time, but the weeds do take over. It is just as bad as mulch so putting in stone is not the answer.

Our neighbors just had some beatiful beds put in, all stone around the palms. 30 days later there are weeds growing in it. They put the weed barrier down, but that helps helps. Does not stop because the weeds start growing in that. It was seeing the weeds in their beds that forced my decision to just take the whole thing out.

I would love it, but that is frowned on here. After all we do live in a subtropic climent which means plenty of rain which means plenty of weeds which means time away from diving, gym, trips, cruises......you ge the idea.

Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad to see other competition. But, it could give a lot of inspiration if handled correctly by the team. Something to work towards. What kind of competition? I'm thinking along the lines of cheerleading? Am I right?

We are local so we don't pack wine for airport handling. If I did, it would be carry on and no, I have never had a bottle break. I have packed wine in our luggage for the port handlers and have not had any break. Bubble wrap and tight packing are a good thing.

They are a locals boat. They give you a flag and push you in. "it's your air so use it up" which means a lot as I will use a 108 and Matt a 95. Great bottom time.

I don't quite now how you can get a deal on points. There are some for sale right now at $8 a point because they have to be used by July. I'm trying to get $10. Just for reference...one night at Boardwalk would cost about 30 points for weeknight and 60 for weekend. It turns out to be a pretty good deal if you wanted to stay in the villa type resorts anyway.

I've never had the pleasure of Vero. I think it was hit hard by the hurricanes last year. I know they did a lot of work to fix it up. Maybe we'll get there soon. We really joined DVC to cruise. It's our favorite part of Disney!

Tinksdad, I will be in Boca Raton this weekend and plan on going out with The Diversity. TheDiversity.com. I have used them in the past. Good operation. Low service, but let's you dive your profile. They are a locals boat. They give you a flag and push you in. "it's your air so use it up" which means a lot as I will use a 108 and Matt a 95. Great bottom time.

Happy Tuesday!

Running a little late today.

Karen - we did Vero for one night before our 10 day cruise. It is a beautiful resort. Our main home is Boardwalk (which we love), but my in-laws aren't really Disney people. Their idea of vacation is a week in Cocoa Beach. So we bought a Vero add-on mostly so we could treat them to a week now and then. In fact we just gave them 5 nights in October for their anniversary last week. I would definately stay there again. The resort is in great shape, but sadly the surrounding area is still showing major damage.

I do know that... one of our regional VP's lives there, and, though he had no major damage to his (brand new) house on the beach, he has told us that the area is an absolute mess. Thinking about maybe going down there for a few days in July. Either that, or we'll head back to Sanibel/Captiva, if there is enough of it left standing. :confused3

Karen - I would give Vero a try. If anything from what I saw in pictures before the hurricane the beach is actually wider now. They have ocean view inn rooms, standard view inn rooms, studios, one and two bedroom villas and the beach cottages (3 bedrooms). Something for everyone. Even the inn rooms and studios have a microwave and small fridge. The others have full kitchens.

We've been to Hilton Head 2 times now - once before kids and once afterward. I think maybe we'll try it again this year if we don't make it down to DW. Currently Disa Visa has a discount rate of $159/night (I think) for a 2-bedroom from now until May 4, excluding spring break time. It's a very relaxing resort. The only downside is the resort not being beachside. We always have a car so just drive to the beach house.

:confused3 OK Mary... Now you've got my gears turning about a vacation this summer. Looking for some advice from all of you who are DVC members (obviously, we are not, though we thought seriously about it before moving to FL). Is the rental board on DIS a good/reputable place to rent points, or is there a better way?

I only want 4 nights (weeknights, at that!) in July, and only want a studio, as we can easily deal with a relatively small space for a quick getaway. How do I do it??? Any suggestions?

Want to work all the details out before I 'mention' to DH that I have a vacation idea for the summer...

Karen, I'd suggest that you do this soon. It's six months away, and DVC resorts do get booked early. I'd rent you some points, but we are fresh out of 2005 points I think. Go over to the DVC rent/trade board and see what's there. You should be able to rent points for Vero for $10 a point, maybe $11, and I think studios in July there are 12 points per night. Contact someone who's been on the boards for a good while (check post count, registration date), and ask them to check availability. Some of them do have references, so ask. You would need to pay them quickly, and you don't have the same cancellation policies as booking with Disney, so ask them about that. Most would give you money back if they are able to rerent the points, but none would within 30 days of the reservation.

Karen - I've never rented points but I know many people have from the DIS boards and have been very happy.

My advice concerns Vero itself. Instead of a studio you might want to consider an inn room. An Ocean View inn room is the same number of points as a studio. The difference is the inn room has two queen beds, the studio has a queen and a double sleeper sofa. They both have a microwave, small fridge, sink and coffee maker. The inn offers underground parking and is closest to the pool.

We loved our ocean view inn room and the view was fantastic!

I was thinking that that might be the way to go... as much as it would be nice to go for a 2-bedroom with lots of space, we will have just as good of a time (bad English there) in an "inn room"- my kids still love the novelty of a 'hotel' room, tho' I'm not quite sure why!!! I'd rather go 'low budget' on this summer's vacation to pay off the 5/27 cruise sooner...

One good thing is we have passed the darkest part of Winter. I can now go to work in light and come home in light (if I don't stay too late). I hate driving in the dark and it is so depressing going home in the dark - makes you think you missed the whole day.

TGIF!

I've got to be in the office extra early today (before 7) so I'm just stopping by to give a quick hello!

A quick check of the boards and then I'm off. I'll check in from work if my press ok goes fast.

Have a great day everyone!

Wow, Mary you're good. What kind of work do you do that gets you into work this early? I'm awake by then, but not functioning in a "work" mode yet. You go girl. :earseek:
