I've read that it takes around four weeks to close but does it still take this long if you are getting outside fiancing. For instance..if I called to buy today how long before I could make my first reservation? Thanks

If you buy thru DVC, you can make reservations immediately- even before closing, regardless of how (or if) you finance.
If you are buying resale, you will have to wait until closing is complete and the deed has been recorded and you are in the DVC computer.

As Doc stated, when buying through DVC you can book right away. If you're buying over the phone/by mail I would assume that you could book as soon as they have your paperwork signed.
However, with both our purchases the closing still didn't occur for a month (longer the first time because they changed the POS...it was about a month and a half before we closed)...both were cash purchases, no financing. I believe this is partially because of the 15 day cancellation period, where you can cancel the purchase if you change your mind.

When we bought the first time we didn't finance through Disney. When we added on, we thought we would. They paper work seemed very long and involved with lots of questions and details. We called after going through the papers and used our credit card to add on. It was just too much trouble to us. We then had time to finance through our bank but could still book a reservation right away using our new points.
