regarding room rates at a value or moderate resort...
what kind of rates is everyone getting?
We are planning a 14 day trip in Oct 2002, and are considering buying an AP....

our 1st trip to WDW was in Oct 2000, we stayed off-site at Wyndam Orlando, rented a car, and had a fantastic time!!!!
Hotel $35 per nite thru priceline
Rental car for $129 - nine days

staying off site allowed us to double our stay....
so I guess my real question is... does the AP make staying on-site affordable??

You won't get the All-Stars for $35 per night! But the real answer here is that you probably won't get an AP Holder discount in October. The last day for AP Holder discounts in 2000 was Oct 4th. For the last 2 or 3 years, Disney has not offered this discount for the last three months of the year.
