Just curious. Has anyone ever checked a box as luggage when they fly? How did it work out?

I was thinking of bringing a blanket and my pillows so I can sleep better, and rather than taking up luggage space, I was thinking of a box. Of course the box counts towards the luggage allowance, but I only have one big suitcase, and I can carry on my little pullman, giving me 1 more piece I can check (plus BF's bag allowance).

The only problem with a box is that they have to be able to inspect the box. So you wouldn't want to seal it. Don't you have an extra old suitcase you can use?

We carry our stroller in the box it was purchased in. We did leave it open and they taped it shut.
I see all kinds of things coming around the belt: coolers, hunting gear, boxes, etc.

I purchased a box in Orlando, family bought too many stuffed animals. I sealed the box, TSA opened the box for inspection and just re-taped it shut. They must do this alot since they used package tape with TSA imprinted.

If I needed it for the trip down I'd use an old suitcase. You can always borrow an old suitcase or buy a duffle bag.

hmmm....a duffle bag isn't a bad idea, they're cheap, too. Thanks!

I've travelled with a box as part of my luggage many times--this was before the days of the TSA though.

It was work related stuff that these days I'm sure would have been looked at very closely.

At any rate, one thing to let you know is that the airlines do'nt consider this properly packed luggage, and thus won't take responsibility for it if it was to break open and you never see your stuff again.

I agree with everyone else, a duffel bag would be a better choice.

Well we just checked some stuffed animals the kids won as luggage that was in a garbage bag with a luggage tag on it. All they did was ask us what was in it and feel it etc. I dont think you would have a problem.

We have checked the large plastic containers without any problems. We tied a rope around the container, that was a suggestion from Delta. Worked fine.

Hi,

a box will work, but keep in mind you are the one toting it around to and from the airport. Could be awkward to carry, depending on size.

We just flew on 5 planes with connections and I watched a lot of bag handlers load luggage into our small planes. Lluggage gets rough handling for sure.

We used a duffle bag for some big items and it worked great. Used pipe cleaners to tie shut.
