Illuminations cruises are a fun and special way to view the Illuminations fireworks at Epcot. These cruises are very popular and require some advance planning in order to get a reservation.
You will tour seven seas lagoon prior to the beginning of Illuminations and be entertained, by your boat's pilot, with Disney trivia and views of the Boardwalk and other resorts, then you anchor beneath a bridge for an unobstructed view of the fireworks. One of the things we enjoyed the most about our Illuminations cruise was being able to just get off the boat and go to our car without fighting the huge crowd that was leaving Epcot afterwards.
Illuminations cruises are technically called "Specialty Cruises". There are 3 levels and prices for these cruises and you can read about them <b>HERE</b> (http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/fireworks.htm).
There are only 5 boats available for this activity and they depart either from Boardwalk or Yacht/Beach Club Marina:
<b>Pontoon Boats</b>: Only 4 pontoon boats are available for this cruise. The cost is $120 plus 6% tax for the boat (this includes the pilot). Each pontoon boat will accommodate up to 10 adults or 12 passengers if some of them are children. The cost is not determined by the number of passengers, so sharing a cruise is good idea if you want to reduce cost.
<b>The Breathless</b>: This is a <b>reproduction</b> of a 1930's ChrisCraft Runabout. It will accommodate a maximum of 7 passengers. The cost is $175 plus 6% tax. This boat departs only from the Yacht &Beach Club Marina. This vessel has more speed than the pontoons.
In addition to the basic cost of the cruise, you should allow a gratuity for the Captain. We had 4 passengers on our cruise and tipped our Captain $25. He did a great job and paid special attention to my 6 year old nephew, my dh says now, that he wishes he had tipped him more, because he just made the whole experience wonderful.
<b>Admission to a park is NOT required</b> to enjoy an Illuminations Cruise :)
<b>How to book an Illuminations Cruise</b>:
You need to call 407-939-7529 exactly 90 days before the date you want to reserve. You can determine when to call by using the DIS's priority seating calculator if you <b>CLICK HERE</b> (http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/dining/pscalc/dispscalc.html) <b><i>Be sure to have a credit card on hand as they require a credit card number in order to guarantee your reservation.</b></i> Your credit card will not be charged until you have enjoyed the cruise but if you are a <b>no show</b> you are charged the full amount of the cruise. So, if you decide not to take the cruise, be sure and call at least 24 hours in advance to cancel.
Since these cruises are so much in demand, start calling about 6:55 am <b>est</b>. If you get a recording that they are not open yet, disconnect and immediately hit redial. If you get the recording thanking you for calling hit #4 right away.
When the reservationist answers <b>do not</b> make small talk, immediately tell him/her that you want to reserve the 8PM specialty cruise for such and such date. <b>Do not</b> ask to reserve an Illuminations cruise or you will waste time hearing that there is no such thing. After you get your reservation you can talk all you want, but these cruises are very difficult to reserve and seconds count when thousands of people are competing for only 5 boats.
When the reservationist indicates that you have obtained the reservation, tell him/her that you want to see Illuminations. He/she will then make arrangements for your cruise to depart the marina about 1/2 hour before Illuminations begins.
You will be told that they cannot guarantee that you will see Illuminations. They tell you this because, if Illuminations is delayed for any reason, your boat will still return to the marina at the end of your hour. So far, there have been no known instances where Illuminations was not seen.
If you have flexibility in your WDW itinerary, it is best to try to reserve a cruise for the first night you have available. That way, if you don't get the reservation, you can try the next day and the next, if necessary.
If you are unable to secure a reservation for an Illuminations cruise, do not give up. Cancellations happen every day. Keep calling and trying for that reservation, even when you are in WDW. I was told by a captain of one of these cruises that his boat has often sat idle because someone cancelled. You can snag a cancellation. I know, because I was lucky enough to get a cancelled cruise only 6 weeks before our trip last year.
You can also sometimes find someone who has a reservation already and is willing to share the space and cost of his cruise with you. The <b>Illuminations Cruise Central</b> posts on the Theme Parks board are there to help people match up for these cruises. There is an Illuminations Cruise Central for each month, beginning 3 months ahead of time.
If you want to try to find a cruise to share, or if you have a reservation for a cruise already and are willing to share with others please post to the appropriate Illuminations Cruise Central. Here are links to the current posts:

The 8PM cruise is the last one of the day. So, if Illuminations begins later than usual, they would just arrange for your cruise to depart the marina 30 minutes before the time the fireworks begin.

Admission to a park is not required for the illuminations cruise, you will not use any days on your hopper pass.

I just wanted to thank everyone for the great info, especially Katholyn. I reserved our Illuminations Specialty Cruise yesterday for our Honeymoon in November. Living on the east coast, we got up at our normal time, and called in right @ 7am and were able to reserve our first Illuminations Cruise. We're going to keep this cruise private, I'm sure you'll all understand.
My Fiance' and I go to either DL or DW at least once a year, usually for the WDAC Convention, so this time we're trying to do some of the "special" things that we may have missed over the years, and the Illuminations Cruise was first on the list.
Just an FYI, "The Breathless" is still out for refurbishing.

We may try to book and share a cruise this December. I'm a little worried about the smoke and ash though. My husband is asthmatic and the smoke could really aggravate his condition. Can the captain maneuver the boat away from smoke if it gets heavy, or once you're anchored under a bridge are you pretty much settled in?
Thanx.

I was able to book our Illuminations Cruise for Saturday, November 7th with the help from this board - THANK YOU!!
I am very sorry, but at this time we don't have any extra room - we had to pick and choose who was going because of the large family group that we have. If anything changes I will keep you posted.
Thanks again for your help and very important information!!

After originally booking an Illuminations cruise for the wrong night (10/26) and calling at 7am the next day and rebooking my Illumanations cruise for Sunday night, October 27th...I will be unable to take the cruise now....My friends that are taking me to WDW for my big 50th are taking me to MNSSHP on that night and have already gotten the tickets! (They also reserved an Illumanations cruise for us later in the week)
So, if anyone would like this cruise, before I call and cancel be email me. 1st email takes it, and we can call and hopefully switch names on the reservation....
The reservation is for an IllumiNations cruise on Sunday, 10/27th @8pm...leaving from the Boardwalk pier!
I'll cancel by Monday the 2nd of September if no one responds to this post, from the DIS board...
Hope someone can use it.....I will get back to your email...

RIDISNEYLOVERS- I just got through reading your post and it seems we will be cruising the same night. We will be picked up at the BC pier. I too am unable to share.
We are celebrating my grandmother 85 b-day and are having a little party on the boat.
My tip for those trying would be to NOT hang up if you are put on hold. I was sooo sad to be put on hold when the line finally opened up that I almost hung up. I was sure by the time they got to me the cruises would all be gone.
My guess is they put the first few callers on hold before the CM's can take calls, so you are not really on hold because others are speaking with CM's but because the lines are opening up. Just a guess.Good luck to everyone who will be trying.

SamanthaL: wow we got two of the boats. I was told to pick up our boat at the Yacht Club dock at 8:15 pm. I think that is the same as the Beach Club dock - right?
Hope to see you there.
P.S. We are practically neighbors - Boston is only about an hour away from me.
Also I would also like to second what SamanthaL said about being put on hold - the same thing happened to me - STAY ON THE PHONE, DO NOT HANG UP. I thought the same thing when I was put on hold (it seemed like an eternity), oh I will never get a cruise and I did.
Thanks again to everyone for this thread - I couldn't have gotten our cruise without this thread.

Hi everyone! I just have a quick question. How does the reservationist know when you call to book the 8pm specialty cruise that you are not calling for the fireworks cruise?
SamanthaL
08-29-2002, 02:54 PM
gibbys1- I am not sure I understand what you are asking, but I will try to answer. Let me know if I am in left field.
When you call and ask for the 8pm cruise most people want the Illumination cruise. I asked to be able to see the fireworks and she said she would put in the computer that we would leave the dock at 8:30 therefore we would need to be at the dock at 8:15.
I don't know if there are more boats than the 4 that are allowed to park for the fireworks. Maybe only 4 can park for the fireworks but there are other boats that will go out for a ride with no Illuminations.
I guess you could call and ask for an 8pm cruise with no Illuminations and see if they have boats that do this.
Someone help me! I think I am sounding dazed and confused! Did I make any sense?

per the instruction on the 1st page of this thread
...tell him/her that you want to reserve the 8PM specialty cruise for such and such date.
The MK cruise is called the fireworks cruise. The Epcot cruise is called the specialty cruise.
At least that's how I understand it. Somebody will straighten me out I'm sure.;)

Sorry if I was confusing you. There are dedicated boats for the MK fireworks cruises and the Epcot Specialty cruises.
There are four pontoon boats plus the Breathless which operate from the BWI and YC piers.
What SamanthaL was saying is that you could also rent the boats at other times during the day (and obviously not see illuminations).
I hope this didn't confuse you more.

I am sorry to correct you, but there are 6 pontoon boats at IllumiNations and Breathless. Breathless and 5 pontoons depart from Bayside Marina at Yacht Club, and 1 Pontoon departs from Boardwalk. The boats then park 3 abreast on each side of the bridge between United Kingdom and France. Breathless parks in front of the six pontoon boats.
The number of boats here has nothing to do with the Magic Kingdom Cruises, since they are in a different lake and dispatched from the Magic Kingdom Resorts.
Please believe me, I know this for fact.

If you reserve a pontoon boat, it's your reservation. Any agreement you make with another party is made outside of your reservation. If they were to cancel, you could either pay the entire cost yourself, try to get another party to share the expence, or cancel your reservation as long as its >24 hours in advance.

Just an FYI,
I called yesterday to get a boat for December 7th (I got one yeah!) and the number that you have to hit for boats has changed to #5 from #4, I spoke to a woman Saturday before I had to make my mad dash to the phone Sunday morning and she said that you can hit any # and it brings you to the same people, but if you hit #5 it comes up with boats on thier screen so it is quicker....before it was #4 and that is now Tennis Reservations...
This might help you get in quicker since other folks might be hitting #4.
Also, another tip, when you call at 6:55 EST (I got in at 6:58 by my cable box time) as soon as it picks up hit 5, if the message keeps going it is closed, so hang up and redial! But, if the message stops and starts to transfer you, hold on...they are open!
I will post this on the other threads for Illuminations as well.
Thanks!

Brennyk, the MK fireworks cruise is a boat that takes you to the lagoon near the Magic Kingdom to view those fireworks. The Illuminations specialty cruise is a boat that takes you to view Illuminations at Epcot.
The cost is the same for both of these.

We have an Illuminations Cruise booked for Thanksgiving evening. I'd like to have "Thanksgiving-ish" desserts and non-alcoholic beverages on board.
I know that you have to go through Disney if you want food on your cruise, but all that I can see to order is tuxedo strawberries, alcohol, Level 1 food, Level 2 Food, and the Birthday package. To be honest, I was kinda picturing a pumpkin pie and a cheese plate or something.
The only way to order dessert though, seems to be with the Level 2 package, and after Thanksgiving dinner, I don't see us being hungry enough to make it worth the fee.
Has anyone out there already dealt with this? Thanks for your help!

I am planning a Ill. cruise for my parents in Feb 2003. Both are in 70's, have problems walking, and one has a wheelchair. Both love fireworks and I felt a cruise would be better than the crowds.

Pontoon Boat. Think of Breathless as a sports car, it sits low in the water, has deep seating area.
The Pontoon Boat sits almost level with the dock and is easy to step onto, and even is wheelchair accessable.
Breathless is not a restored boat, it is a rare replica. Chris Craft made only 12 (I think it's 12) boats off the original specs. Disney was lucky enough to buy one for our enjoyment!

All,
OK, I actually went to Bayside Marina and got you this info tonight.
Breathless is a solid mahogany "Runabout"
A replica of a 1930 Model. Only 24 Boats were made in 1990. After the 24th hull was completed, the design was retired. It's 24 ft in length and powered by a 350 Cubic inch Mercruiser Marine Engine!

I'm a little confused....noticed in several messages that the boat's depart at 8:00pm for the illumanation crusises.
My husband was making a reservation for a resturant on site in time for the fireworks and was told that they started at 6:15pm during the week of November we will be there.
Does that mean that possible the fireworks at Magic Moutian and Epcot are at different times?
Also we'd like to share a boat if anyone has space Nov., 9,10, or 15th.
Thanks:)

Yes, the Magic Kingdom Fireworks have nothing to do with the IllumiNations Fireworks. Magic Kingdom Fireworks are more seasonal, and start time varies throughout the year. IllumiNations Fireworks are always at 9pm, except for a few Holiday presentations.

I was unable to book a boat for Illuminations, but I just made (cancellable) reservations for the cruise to see the Magic Kingdom fireworks on November 30. We just returned from our Illuminations cruise on 12/1. Although the cruise is enjoyable due to the fact that Illuminations is spectacular, I was a bit disappointed in the cruise itself. From past posters, as recently as May-June, I had read that the cruise takes you around the world showcase before it docked under the bridge for the Illuminations show. Our cruise last week just went from the YC marina past Swan-Dolphin and along the canal to MGM. Although viewing these resorts is pretty, it did not compare to my expectation for being in the WS lagoon. Other pontoon boats that evening followed the same path. Does anyone know when the route changed?
Our captain provided blankets....which was very kind considering it was quite chilly that night (high 50s), but he was not particularly chatty either. He offered no info on anything that we didn't ask about. And he barely knew the story behind the Osborne lights!
So although I am not disappointed that we tried something new, I'm not sure I would do this again. Getting an excellent viewing spot for Illuminations might be just as rewarding as the cruise.

We recently enjoyed the Magic Kingdom fireworks cruise, on November 30. We left from the Contemporary Resort marina, and we were given a tour, both before and after the fireworks, of the Bay Lake and seven Seas Lagoon. The guide was very friendly and talkative, mostly with Disney trivia and information. We had fun, and he even let my 14 year old steer the boat for a few moments. The fireworks were beautiful and we had a totally unobstructed view. I have since heard that this cruise is better than the Illuminations cruise, because the boat at Epcot stops behind a bridge were pedestrians have the superior view.

IT'S ALSO PRETTY COOL TO HAVE EVERYONE LOOKING AT YOU IN THE BOAT AND WONDER WHO THE "VIPS" IN THE PRIVATE BOATS ARE!

[i]..., because the boat at Epcot stops behind a bridge were pedestrians have the superior view. [/B]
No, that's not correct. The pontoon boats are parked UNDERNEATH the bridge. The pedestrians may have a slightly better view, but only those who are are "on the rail" and closest to the lake, not those who are behind others. The view from the boat is great, and most importantly relaxing! You don't have any distractions from the boat, no last minute spot crashers, no strollers or crying babies......
Until you experience it, it's hard to fully understand.

I can back up Hakim's statement about where the boats park. In fact, we took the Illuminations cruise last week, and our driver was one of the drivers for the Breathless which is being restored. We were in a pontoon, but since he is a driver for the Breathless, he parked us in what he called the #1 spot, which is usually Breathless's spot. Our pontoon sat slightly in front of the other boats parked at the front edge of the bridge. We could look back up and behind us to see the people standing on the bridge.
I agree it is well worth the money. As our driver told us, once you see Illuminations from the boats, you'll never see them any other way. :)
Thanks to the very helpful instructions in this topic I was able to reserve an Illuminations Cruise for our trip in mid-March. One thing that I had not read previously in this thread: The CM booking my cruise told me to call back 5 days prior to the cruise to confirm the departure time. I believe that she said that this was due to the schedules for Illuminations not being known this far in advance.
This should be a lot of fun. As an added twist, I've "neglected" to tell the rest of the family about it...I've booked it as a surprise for our last night. ;)
Merry Christmas to All!

I've a question about food on the cruises.
First of all, about two years ago, I took my mother, sister, and friends on a one of these cruises, and it was awesome. Really neat.
Secondly, I was able to score 'Breathless' for my upcoming March trip. My question is this: what is the deal with food on the boat? Does Disney have a catering menu that can be supplemented with the cruise? What does it entail?
I'm looking for maybe some wine and cheese during our Breathless Illuminations cruse. Is that do-able?
Thanks!

Thanks to everyone here I was able to get the Illuminations Cruise this morning for our trip in April. Had to get up early on a Saturday, but it was worth it! Called a few times and they were closed:( . Then when I got through I was put on hold:( . But thought I'd hang in there and hope for the best. Well, I got through and made no small talk, just told him what I wanted and *BOOM*, I got one!! I was soooo excited! My family will be thrilled!!

Been lurking long enough (about a year now!) and thought it was time to start sharing! Thanks to the wonderful people on this board, we have the Illuminations Cruise booked for Easter Sunday. We will be sharing it with some wonderful friends who invited us to join them on their 4th trip to "The World" (our 6th). Has anyone requested a certain captain, from what I have read some are better than others? Thanks for your help!:D

Belle12 - we did the cruise in April 2002 and we did not enter the WS lagoon - for safety reasons (all the pyrotechnic stuff under water) I don't believe they can take the pontoon boats into the worldshowcase lagoon. Our cruise went around the waterways by MGM, the Swan, Dolphin, Boardwalk, Yacht & Beachclub.
When we did our cruise in April 2002 we actually did it as a bday cruise with an AWESOME cake that they provide (total of 5 in our group) and had some folks from the boards here join us (brining our boat total to 11). We had a blast!!

Wow, that's interesting. I wonder if another poster/cruiser was exaggerating
her route, making it sound too good to be true. Your explanation makes sense, but the two friendship boats do cross the WS lagoon, so some boat
traffic must be allowed.
Thanks. Glad your cruise was great. :)
ivanova
01-22-2003, 03:23 PM
not sure but the friendship boats could be on tracks - that or they have preapproved (clear) paths to follow - I've never seen one deviate from their path, and I'm not sure there's a "clear path" all the way around the lagoon from where the pontoon boats could enter (under the bridge)

I posted my request in the wrong place earlier. I just made reservations for the Fantasy in the Sky cruise leaving from the Contemporary on 3/17, because there was obviously nothing left for the Illuminations Cruise. I would still like to find someone who has Illuminations, looking for riders. It would be 2 adults and 2 children. If I can't find it, maybe someone would want to share the cruise I have booked for the other show.

Hi Proudmilitarywife--welcome to the DIS, I'm really glad you found us.
You will call the same number and follow the same routine. After you have secured the reservation that you want <b>then</b> you can tell them that you want the birthday boat. You don't tell them first because every second counts.
The birthday boat is simply the regular pontoon boat with decorations and balloons and cake :)
Good luck with this!

Am new to the DIS and want to say thank you. I will be at the GF 6/4-6/10/03. The Illuminations cruise is something I always wanted to do but never knew how to arrange despite having visited WDW twelve times. By following the advice in this thread I handily booked a specialty cruise (pontoon boat) for Wed 6/4 to see Illuminations. Since I 'knew the drill' it all went very smoothly. Here is my experience:
-Start calling the PLAY number @ 6:55am . I started calling at 6:55am. The first six tries I got a recording saying that the office was closed. Each time I would hang up and try again immediately.
-Select OPTION 5 immediately upon prompt. On my seventh try I was prompted to make a choice from my touchtone keypad and I selected option 5 (boats) immediately.
-If placed on HOLD DO NOT HANG UP. I was placed on hold after I got a brief message saying that all operators were busy. I didn't panic and waited. After only a few seconds on hold, I got a CM.
-Book 8pm Specialty Cruise on the Date you want. I said I wanted to book the 8pm Specialty Cruise for Wed 6/4. CM checked quickly and said I had the boat.
-Once reserved, discuss Illuminations. Once booked, I said I wanted to see Illuminations and was given an 8:15p dock time.
-Have credit card ready. Once reserved, we discussed the level of service I wanted and I gave my credit card number in exchange for a confirmation number. The Level 1 (sandwiches, soft drinks and snacks) cruise is $200.
I also booked a Backstage Magic Tour for one of my days - - this is my first time to WDW as an adult w/o little children so we are free to do more grown-up things like a full-day tour. Again, thank you very, very much. I keep learning from this website. Btw, I use your reservations calculator regularly!

Thanks to these boards, I booked a cruise for June 14th! I have a question I hope someone can answer: I made the reservation for myself, DH and our two children. We will be in the middle of a family reunion at the time, and I had planned to invite any family members who wanted to come along (up to the boat capacity, of course!) If more of us show up than are on my reservation, will I need to call ahead of time, or does it matter? If I need to call, how much advance notice is required? TIA!

We were lucky enough to share an Illuminations cruise with some other DISers last week, and it was terrific!
We met the boat at 8:15 at the Boardwalk pier. Our captain cruised us around the lagoon for a while, then parked in our viewing spot under the little bridge between France and England just before showtime. Here's a photo of our cruise buddies (the SCDuckman/SCMinnie gang, the jlcbshaw gang, and us):
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid56/pb6a2bc9a3a2856147e989b377dfe5e28/fc75bfa3.jpg
We've all gathered in the front of the boat for the photo, but there is plenty of comfy seating for everyone.
Here's a sample of what you can expect to see from the boat:
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid56/pcbdeb9bd67add2242d1e52b50698c465/fc75c106.jpg
We had three identical pontoon boats parked side by side, and the Breathless nearby. After the show was over, we cruised back to the Boardwalk pier and said goodbye to our captain. No crowds to fight!
This is a great idea for a relaxing and unique end of the day experience.

Many thanks to all of you who so generously share information. Today I successfully booked a pontoon boat for 6/25 - our final night at Disney. Each day this week I've pulled over at 6:55 AM to start my phoning from the car. This morning I again was put on hold but I noticed - no music!!! Sure enough, after a short wait I got through and said what I needed. I felt like I'd won the lottery when I learned a boat was available! And it's my birthday. What more could a girl want? This is a good suggestion. I would like to point out a few things.
1. You are renting the entire boat. It is not a per person charge, so one guest or 10, same price.
2. When you are lucky enough to get your Priority, you advise how many will be on the boat. IF this number changes, it would be wise to call WDW-PLAY and tell them to change the Comments. Why? Because this will allow the drivers to better plan for your party. There are two size pontoons used and usually smaller parties get assigned to the smaller pontoon.
3. If you have a short notice (2-days or less) change, call Bayside Marina directly to tell them about the change.

Just an FYI. The dock that the boat from Epcot docks at is not the same dock you get your pontoon boat at. The pontoon boats are at the Yacht Club Marina. When get off the Boat from Epcot, walk down the dock towards the Yacht Club. When you leave the dock, turn left. The marina is on your left as you get to the end of the Yacht Club.
