Last night my DH suggested that we fly to DisneyWorld and then rent a car to drive home (approx. 500 miles). Has anyone ever done this? He says it would be cheaper than flying round trip, get down there faster, save wear and tear on the car, etc. It makes sense, but I wonder how cost effective it is. We have 3 children so would have to rent a large car or minivan. Has anyone ever done this, and how did it work out?

Be sure to price your flights first, often R/T air is cheaper than 1 way.

Most instances it is incredibly expensive to rent a car and drop it off in another state. Check out some of the rental car's sites and see what kind of rates you get.

Your scenario will almost always be more expensive than just buying a RT ticket.

One way car rentals are ALMOST always priced astronomical. BUT from certain common destinations at certain times of the year the rental companies discount heavily and in some instances almost pay you to move the cars for them. Certain places cars just seem to stack up.

Not sure about orlando, but i know in the fall they like to move cars out of New York and in the spring they like to get them out of pheonix. Not sure if its the same, but i do know that Uhual and Ryder give great one way rates out of FLorida due to everyone moving there from the north.
