View Full Version : Deborah's 30 Day Challenge (comments welcomed!) Final Weigh-in

06-13-2004, 08:40 PM
My boyfriend and I started a challenge today to see who can lose the most weight in 30 days. I plan to use this journal as a way to document my exercise and to track my weightloss. My primary goal is to exercise everyday for the next 30 days, alternating cardio with strength training. I also want to eat healthier. My plan is to increase lean protein, significantly decrease white carbs (bread, rice, sugar, potatoes), increase water intake, and eliminate alchohol.

I know my plan my sound a little extreme with a goal to exercise everyday, but I only plan to keep up that frequency for the next 30 days. For 30 days I can do it!! :D

I think db will likely win the prize (dinner wherever his heart desires), but if we both become healthier than we will both be winners. If I become firmer, my goal will be reached regardless of what the scale says.

DBF 172.5 pounds 5' 10"
Me 125 pounds 5' 2"

06-13-2004, 08:44 PM
Day One: 66 minutes on the precor (elliptical trainer). Whooo Hoooo! That is reportedly 538 calories burned!!! :hyper: ::yes:: :teeth:

06-14-2004, 07:09 PM
Day 2: I did Denise Austin's Fat Burning Blast! :D

28 days to go!!!

06-15-2004, 03:58 PM
Day 3: Body Sculpt from The Firm BSS1

06-15-2004, 04:28 PM
Wow Girl! That is ambitious! And Welcome to Wish! It seems to me that you do not have much weight to lose but being healthier is always a great goal! You are off to a wonderful start with your exercise!

06-15-2004, 04:46 PM
Hi Deborah,

You are doing an amazing job exercising. Keep up the great work.

06-16-2004, 09:20 AM
Hi Deborah!
You are doing a great job with exercising! Keep up the good work! Have a great day!

06-16-2004, 08:49 PM
Thanks for all of the encouragement!!

Day 4: Cardio Sculpt (FIRM BSS1)

I feel good! I already feel stronger in my arms and legs. :D

06-17-2004, 05:47 PM

Thanks for the comments on my journal. You made my day.:D

I have a question for you. Did you take measurements at the start? If not, I'd suggest you do so now. You are doind some really weights/muscle intensive workouts. You may find that you don't lose that many pounds, but some major inches. You might lose more inches than your boyfriend. Keep up the great work, and good luck in the contest.

06-17-2004, 07:25 PM
Strings, I haven't measured. That is something I probably should do! Your point is very well taken. I really do want to get stronger and leaner rather than to be so focused on the scale. Thanks for the luck. :smooth:

Day 5: Your Personal Best Workout with Elle Macpherson (Karen Voight is actually the instructor).

This is an older video but it is one of my favorite total-body workouts. It involves a lot of athletic moves and the Hawaii scenery doesn't hurt either. ;)

I think tomorrow will have to be a pure cardio day to give my muscles a rest. My goal is to go to the gym before work. Lets see how that goes.

06-18-2004, 11:08 AM
Day 6: I didn't make it to the gym, but I did do Fat Burning Blast. :D

06-19-2004, 04:21 PM
Day 7: Body sculpt

First week weigh-in:
Me: 123 (2 pounds lost)
DBF: 170 (2.5 pounds lost)

Yea for both of us!!
:Pinkbounc :bounce:  :bounce: :Pinkbounc

I also took my measurements today.

06-19-2004, 04:34 PM
Congratulations to both of you!:Pinkbounc Looks like you had a great week!::yes:: Keep up the good work!

06-20-2004, 09:17 PM
Day 8: 66 minutes on the precor!

Thanks TSD!

06-21-2004, 11:49 AM
 Hi Deborah,
Welcome to Wish! You are doing great :Pinkbounc :bounce: !

06-21-2004, 12:58 PM
Hi Deborah!

Thanks for posting to my journal! Your goal to exercise everyday is so inspiring! You and your db are doing so well. Keep it up!

06-21-2004, 08:00 PM
Day 9: Fat Burning Blast! For how short this tape is (25 minutes) you sure do get a lot of bang for your buck. I really like how the high impact moves allow you to increase the intensity of the exercise. If I push myself during this tape, I really break a sweat.

Thanks for the support!:D

06-22-2004, 12:32 PM
Day 10: I actually went to the gym this morning before work. I did 66 minutes on the precor!!

Day 10 makes a third of the way towards my goal. I'm proud of myself!! :D

06-22-2004, 03:57 PM
Way to go! You are doing a fabulous job with exercising!::yes:: Doesn't it feel good to be 1/3 of the way there?!??! Great job!!:Pinkbounc

06-23-2004, 06:49 PM
Day 11: Body Sculpt

I actually think I'm almost ready to move up to 10 pound weights! :D

06-24-2004, 06:15 PM
Day 12: Fat Burning Blast!

06-26-2004, 01:12 PM
I exercised yesteday but couldn't get on the DIS to post it.

Day 13: Fat Burning Blast (again)

06-26-2004, 03:42 PM
You are doing an awesome job!! Keep up the good work!:jumping1:

06-27-2004, 12:56 PM
Thanks, Tracy!

Day 14 (yesterday): I did Fat Burning Blast yet again. DBF watched me and thought it was a good workout.

Weigh In #2:
Me 123.5
DBF 169.5

I gained half a pound :( and he lost half a pound. :D I'm trying not to be frustrated about the small gain. I know I feel and look better - even a friend of DBF's commented this week that he thought I lost weight. I did lose a half an inch at my waist!

06-27-2004, 07:10 PM
Deborah!:) I always forget that these journals are at the top of the page, and I was so happy to see your name! I love the pictures of all your babies and your little 1/2 baby, too! I'm sorry about Copper Ann. :( We had a little Boo, too. She's with Copper Ann.

Way to go with all your consistent exercise! You are doing an awesome job! I was doing The FIRM exclusively but have now moved on to Cathe Friedrich workouts--I call her The Insane Fitness Beast!:faint:

Don't be discouraged about your 1/2 pound gain! It could be something as simple as hydration. (It is frustrating, though, isn't it?) I'm so proud of you for working with such dedication and consistency--are you a little Devil With A Red Dress On, yet? Keep it up, Deborah--YOU RULE!:cool1:

06-27-2004, 08:07 PM
:wave2: luvmydogs! I can't believe you remember the red dress. I stalled on my program so I didn't end up wearing it for our first anniversary. The winner of our challenge gets to chose any restaurant for our dinner celebration. I have already told my DBF that even if I don't win I am wearing the red dress that night! :smooth: I think he is excited to finally see me in it. I tried it on last week - it definitely fits, I just want to look amazing in it.

Sorry about your Boo. :( Its good to know they are waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge.

Your journey just continues to inspire me. When I get up to your level of fitness, I'll have to check out Cathe Friedrick. ;) Do you have before and after pictures posted on line? Thanks once again for your encouragement!

06-27-2004, 08:09 PM
Day 15: 66 minutes on the precor and I'm getting off the computer to walk my perfect brats!

06-28-2004, 10:19 AM
 Hi Deborah,
Don't let that 1/2 a pound discourage you. It's the inches that really matter (along with how you look and feel) ::yes:: . WTG losing that 1/2 inch :thewave: !

06-28-2004, 10:44 PM
Vald, I know you are right!

Day 16: Ab Sculpt. Ok, this didn't really feel like much exercise but I guess it counts. I also walked my pooches again. :D

I went to the doctor today and my blood pressure is the lowest it has ever been (104/60). I was a little worried it might be a little too low, but DBF said it is fine.

06-29-2004, 04:46 AM
Hi Deborah!

Great news about your blood pressure! Mine really came down also when I lost weight and exercised (It's really amazing what losing 110 pounds will do for one's health!:hyper: ).

Great job getting in your exercise even though you didn't really feel like it--I have those days, too! I bet it's fun walking all the babies! I remember when I first saw that pic of you and Harley--I swear that picture should be on a tourism brochure for Colorado or Alaska or some state with cold weather and mountains. "Come visit Colorado! All the women here are as gorgeous as this, and they all have big, beautiful dogs!" It's just such a outdoorsy, pretty picture.:)

To answer your question, I don't have any pre-weight loss photos--on the internet or anywhere else. I never let anyone take my picture, and if someone did, I would always try to steal it and tear it up. That's how nasty my self-image was. But now--shoot away! We were on a cruise a few weeks ago and the whole time I made dh take pics of ds8 and me--it was a nice feeling. My driver's license is still of me heavy. It honestly looks like a different person.

Congratulations on all your hard work, Deborah! You are just jammin'!:cool1:

06-30-2004, 10:58 PM
Thank you! :D I so understand about pictures. When I was heavier, I hated to have my pic taken. My boyfriend loves photograpy. I still don't enjoy it, but it is not painful like it was in the past. Maybe some day I'll enjoy it like you do now! Glad you had fun on your cruise!!

Day 17: Your Personal Best Workout

Day 18: Cardio Sculpt

06-30-2004, 11:47 PM
Great job on the exercising.

I've been looking for new fitness dvds/tapes to try out and I think I may try a few of the ones you mentioned.

Keep up the hard work!!

07-01-2004, 09:47 AM
:wave2: Hi Deborah,
Great news about the blood pressure! Mine has also gone down and I've only lost about ten pounds (need to lose another 25-30). It's a great feeling knowing that you are working toward a healthier you, isn't it? Wishing you a wonderful day :sunny: !

07-01-2004, 07:09 PM
:cheer2: GO DEBORAH GO!!! :cheer2: You're doing such an awesome job--a big WOO HOO to you!:thewave:

07-01-2004, 10:42 PM
Thanks for all the support and encouragement!!! :D

Day 19: The Firm Maximum Cardio Burn

07-02-2004, 01:31 PM
Great job on your consistent exercise, Deborah! Maximum Cardio Burn has always been one of my favorites. I always giggle when Allie says "hiccup!" during the ab section! I'm cheering for you to beat that dbf of yours! What restaurant are you choosing when (yes, I said WHEN, not IF!:) ) you win?

Keep jammin', Deborah, you're doing an awesome job!:cool1:

07-02-2004, 03:48 PM
Deborah, I've just caught up on your journal!! You are almost 2/3 done - no time to slow down now!! I bet you'll be lookin' great, no matter who picks the restaurant!

I think that extra half pound you gained was muscle from all those workouts! That would explain why you went down in inches but up on the scale! I'd much rather have smaller measurements than a smaller scale number! ::yes::

I'm sending you :sunny: and best wishes for a wonderful holiday weekend! Don't overindulge - your contest is almost over!!

07-03-2004, 08:42 AM
Hey Deborah,
You are doing a fantastic job! Keep up the good work!:Pinkbounc Have a safe and Happy Fourth of July weekend!

07-03-2004, 11:36 AM
Thanks once again for all of the encouragement. You guys are the BEST! I haven't decided yet which restaurant I'll pick when (;) ) I win - I've narrowed it between The Melting Pot and Sambuca Jazz Cafe.

Day 20: Body Sculpt (lower body). I was short on time yesterday so I only did the lower body portion. I really think this video works my thighs the hardest! :D

07-03-2004, 12:07 PM
I did Body Sculpt yesterday too! I did the entire video and let's just say that my muscles are crying today! ;) I think that lower body workout is one of the toughest I have ever done.::yes:: It's funny because my muscles haven't really been sore after doing this tape for awhile now. My legs, fanny, and triceps are feeling it today though.::yes::  Have a great Fourth of July weekend!

Keep up the good work!!!

07-03-2004, 02:41 PM
Great job, Deborah! Body Sculpt is a real killer--especially the lower body section (honestly--how many leg presses can one do?!):scared:

Ooooooo, The Melting Pot and Sambuca Jazz Cafe sound like yummy places (mmmmmm...Sambuca!), and I'm sure you'll knock 'em dead in your gorgeous red dress! WAY TO GO!:cool1:

Have a safe and happy July 4th!

07-04-2004, 11:19 AM
Day 21: Body Sculpt (lower body).

I exercised last night at 11 pm. Yesterday I started getting ready for a garage sale I plan on having next weekend. Its my first - I didn't realize how much work it will be. It will be great to have less clutter though!

Happy 4th everyone!!

07-04-2004, 12:56 PM
You are doing awesome Deborah! Keep up the great work!:Pinkbounc

07-04-2004, 06:01 PM
Hi Deborah:

Hope you're having a great 4th of July. I forgot to add this to my post... You should tell your boyfriend that instead of competing for the total number of pounds lost, you should count the percentage of total body weight lost. For instance, you'd only need 12.5 pounds to lose 10% of your original weight....he'd need to lose 17. It may mean a little more math, but may mean you get to have dinner wherever your heart desires.

07-05-2004, 09:29 AM
Hi Deborah!:wave2:
You are doing a great job with exercising!::yes:: I hope you have a wonderful garage sale this weekend! We are having one Thursday- Saturday and look forward to making some extra money for WDW. Have a great Monday!

07-06-2004, 10:37 AM
I didn't know that having a garage sale would be this much work! But I am going through everything I own and getting rid of 33 years of junk (and nice stuff I have just never used).

I probably should have exercised every morning because for the last several days by the time I exercised I was pooped! I highly doubt I will lose this week since I have done almost no cardio. I am proud of myself for at least doing something everyday though. Before the challenge, if I had something that was consuming my time there is no way I would have even given exercise a thought.

Day 22: Body Sculpt (upper)

Day 23: Ab Sculpt

Day 24: Yoga for Dummies

Last night it was 11:45 before it even occured to me to that I needed to exercise. I was exhausted so I picked a video that I knew would be relaxing (and almost feel asleep during the last pose - relaxation pose!). Its only the second time I did the Yoga vide and I liked it more this time than last. The instructor is wonderful but they have these stupid tips that pop up with annoying sounds that are distracting.

In some ways it is hard to believe that yoga is even considered exercise. It is so relaxing. If practiced regularly however, I can see how the balance moves would increase muscle strength. And it definitely would increase flexibility. I may actually look into getting a different yoga or pilates tape. This one is more instructional than something you can actually use regularly.

07-06-2004, 11:07 PM
Day 25: Fat Burning Blast! :D

07-07-2004, 01:28 PM
Hi Deborah!

You must be exhausted between getting ready for your yard sale and all your exercise! I bet you're burning some extra calories with all the running around you're doing!

Great job getting in your workouts--even at 11:45 at night!:faint: If you have an extra second sometime (and I know you don't get many of those!) I'd love to hear about Fat Burning Blast and Your Personal Best workouts--I've never heard of them before and I'm always looking something new and interesting to shake things up a bit! But no rush--I know you're really busy!:)

Keep up all you awesome work, Deborah, and have a lovely day!:sunny:

07-07-2004, 03:17 PM
That is probably because they are so old - from 1994 and 1996! It feels like I have had them both forever.

Fat Burning Blast is comprised of two short workouts by Denise Austin. The first one is a complete waste. The second one - the one I do - is interval training. I like this video for two reasons. It is very short which is good for days when I don't have much time. Secondly, it has quite a few moves during the aerobics section that are high impact - which basically means you can make it as intense as you want by how high you jump. In my opinion, this is an excellent tape for beginners. The weight training is just too limited to make a real impact unless you are not in shape at all.

Your Personal Best Workout is probably my favorite full body workout - primarily because of the beautiful scenery and the athletic moves it uses. Karen Voight as the instructor is one of the best. Elle McPherson doesn't bother me - I actually kind of like her but I know many find her annoying. It is also interval training. It is good for beginners to intermediates.

Luvmydogs, I honestly don't know if you would find either challenging enough. Your Personal Best is just a fun workout for me - it involves moves from football, kickboxing, swimming, jump roping, skating, and basketball.

07-07-2004, 07:34 PM
I'm also doing a list on paper by date and I just realized that list and this list are a day off from each other. Not sure where I messed up.

Day 26: Buns of Steel 3: Buns and More

This is the oldest exercise tape I own. I found it cleaning this week. I used to love this tape! Its basically 40 minutes of squats, lunges and leg lifts (different types) plus a little ab work. This is definitely a killer lower body workout and gives Body Sculpt significant competition for best lower body. Tamilee Webb has an amazing body. If I could trade my body in, I might pick hers. :D The down side: its from 1991 and looks every bit of it.

07-09-2004, 12:21 AM
Day 27: Crunch: Brand New Butt

Another old tape I found. I'm definitely not selling it! :D

07-09-2004, 04:36 PM
Hi TigerBear!:sunny:

Thanks for the workout descriptions! I've read some really good reviews of Your Personal Best--I'm glad you like it!

Your challenge is almost at an end, isn't it? You have done an amazing job keeping up with all your exercise committments--I bet you're noticing a difference in your strength and muscle tone! WAY TO GO DEBORAH!:)

This is your yard sale weekend, yes? I hope you have really nice weather and make lot$ and lot$ of money!

Have a lovely weekend, Deborah, and congratulations on all your hard work!

07-11-2004, 08:26 PM
My lesson for this weekend - garage sales are exhausting! I made over $500 at my garage sale though so I think it was worth it, but I probably will never do it again.

I'm definitely off on counting my days. Friday I did a ton of yard work (mowing, weeding, cutting tree branches and shrubs) and yesterday was the big day. No time either day for official exercise, but considering how physically exhausted I was both days I think they count as workouts. Even just moving everything outside in the morning yesterday was a chore. I got rid of half of the furniture I own!

I bought a new yoga dvd today (Yoga Mind And Body) so I'll do that tonight. Tomorrow is the official end of the contest but we have decided to wait until Friday to weigh in and celebrate. I have a feeling neither of us has lost much. But, we have both been much more consistent about exercising which is a good thing.

07-12-2004, 12:43 PM
I like my new yoga dvd but it was hard! There was one pose that I could not do at all. I'm betting with practice I'll get better. I also ordered another yoga dvd from amazon today! :D

07-18-2004, 09:34 AM
Our final weigh-in was Friday night. DBF lost 4 pounds and I lost 3.5 pounds. I'm proud of us both! He had made dinner reservations at Sambuca without telling me. :D

Yesterday we did a new yoga dvd together (Yoga Zone: Stretching and Stress Release). I'm surprised how much I am enjoying yoga!

07-18-2004, 05:18 PM
Hi TigerBear!:wave2:

Congratulations to you and DBF on both your successes! I think it's great that you and he are working out together--it's so nice to have a supportive partner!

Have a wonderful night at Sambuca and I'm sure you'll look just stunning in that gorgeous red dress!princess:
