I am looking for a dc just for on-line auctions. Walmart has a vivtar vivicam 3350 for about $20.00. Do you think this will be sufficient enough?

If you are buying a digital camera strictly for online use, the resolution is irrelevant. Screens only display 72 dpi so you don't even need a 1 megapixel camera. The one feature I would highly recommend, however, is macro focusing. That allows you to focus on a small object close up. Otherwise, if you are photographing something relatively small - a watch, a figurine, etc. - you are stuck taking the picture from 3 feet away and can't see any detail in the photo. Its worth paying a little extra to get a camera that offers a macro mode.

If it says macro focusing to 12 inches, does this mean the closest I can get to the item is 1 foot before the picture will not look right?

Exactly.
