Can anyone tell me more about these?

DisneyFanatik

I am not sure if they are still offering this but if you are referred by an existing ING customer you will receive a $25 bonus just for opening your a/c. There is no minimum initial deposit (I opened mine with $1) and no minimum balance fees. ING accounts are currently earning 2 pct. I believe. For every person that you refer you get a $10 bonus (upon their account opening). You can refer your spouse, your kids - anyone with a SS #. If you need a referral to get started just pm me.

Also, the way it works is that you link your ING account to your checking account.

When you want to deposit into the ING acct, you deposit the money to your checking and transfer it to the ING on their website or do it by phone with customer service.

When you want to take money out, you transfer it back.

I've started the direct savings plan with ING (signed up on their website) where I have money taken out every week and automatically transferred from my checking to my ING account. The savings is really growing and I can check the balance anytime of day or night.

The referral program is ongoing. You can open an account without using one, but you will not get a bonus $25.00.

You have to claim all bonus & referral money as interest earned too at the end of the year. You're statement online and on paper shows you all interest earned to date.

It's a great way to save - go for it. 2% APY::yes::

There's an ING Direct FAQ Thread (http://***************/showthread.php?s=&threadid=524720) near the top of the Rewards Board. There's all kinds of valuable information there about the accounts and how to set one up.

You can even PM one of the posters for a referral. Just don't ask for one by posting (it's kind of against TOS and could get any discussions about the program pulled).

I have opened up one for myself - to save for Disney of course! - and opened up others for my kids and my husband. We all got the bonus and can use the money for vacations. It is a good spot for a kids savings account. So far I've found it to be a good spot to stash money - easy to link to my checking account.

As of 6/1/04, the APY is now 2.1%. (Not a big increase but an increase nonetheless!) Thought the 1.75% from my credit union was good!! Also checked out their CD rates and they are now even higher than my credit union, which has always been much higher than savings banks!

Just with the $25 referral sign-on bonus and signing on 6 friends, I also made $85 in "interest." A good deal in my book!

My family of 4 made $130 in opening our accounts! Then I made about $100 more with referring my other family members and friends. I also have $20 a month automatically put in.

My sister opened her account through Microsoft Money and the bonus there is $50!!

I've got no complaints and I thank the original poster on this subject several months ago here on the DIS!!

If you're a Turbotax user, use the link and code provided on your Turbotax materials, you get a $50 sign up bonus. That is what my husband did for his account - bonus was posted the same day he opened it.

I just pm'd someone for a referral so I can open an account.

Where did you find the link from turbo tax? I have turbo tax so I might use that link.

Guess you can't do both huh? Also, if I use the TT link, can I still refer people to get the $10 bonuses?

Couple other questions...

Can I sign up, then make another account for my hubby with me as a joint person to get more $$$?

Does the interest get credited every month?

How can you close the account if you choose?

Can't answer your question about Turbo Tax...

No, you cannot do both. Once you open an account, you can then refer anyone you want and if they open accounts, then you will get the $10.

I referred my DH. He opened a separate account but using the same checking (or you can use a different checking account but do not make your and his ING accounts joint. If you make them joint, no $25 bonus for him. They must be separate.

You can also open accounts for your kids as minors (they will be in a sense joint and there are directions on their website) and they WILL also get bonuses and you will get referrals...then you can transfer their money into your account once it appears. I did this and then closed their accounts. My DH transferred his $25 to his checking and spent it! He has since closed his account.

The $25 and $10 will appear right away BUT they make you wait 30 days before you can transfer it anywhere.

The 2% interest is once a month.

You have to call them with the PIN # and accounts to close. Very easy though.

Thanks. Guess I'll just open an account for myself and DD (with me as custodian).

DH doesn't know how to work a computer that well, and he's hardly ever home. Works in auto body so he's always working...

Just need to wait for the link (referral) to sign up. Can't wait...

You can open your DH's account! You don't need him!!!;) You just need to know his SSN and just plug in all the same info; you can use your same checking account for all accounts you open and deposit $1 each!

Good Luck!

This is a great program! I opened my account using the Turbo Tax link and have opened accounts for my DH and DD. I am using my account for vacation savings, DH's account for savings for budget kind of things like quarterly taxes and water bills, etc, and DD's is for any money that she gets for Birthdays and Christmas, etc.

We've been with ING for a couple years and we're really pleased with them. Each DS has a savings account where I stash their Coverdell savings until I make their quarterly contributions, we have what I guess would be our longterm/emergency savings that we don't touch, and I just opened another strictly for fun savings, like vacations or toys my DH wants.

We love ING too. I signed up with a referral from the DIS boards-free $25:) The interest rate is great and it is easy to open an account. I try to put $10 in every week or so.

I noticed that you were'nt allowed to tell people you can give them a referral but didn't know you couldn't ask for one...

Anyway, I just signed up and can't wait to start saving.

Have a question about adding DD. She is 4. If I add her as main member and myself as joint, will she still get the $25 credit if my name is under her as a joint owner?

Lorix2
06-01-2004, 07:26 PM
Yes, she will.

She will be "primary" acct holder and you will be "secondary/joint". If you do the reverse, she won't get credit because they will recognize you as a primary acct holder with an established acct already.

Thanks,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it is stating that you have 30 days, from 6/1-7/1, to act on the referral to sign up and receive the bonus. After 30 days you are no longer eligible for the $25 bonus. The offer as a whole does not end, just your particular referral.

That's exactly what it means. If you've ever referred someone and they didn't take you up on the offer, you'll notice that the "referral" disappears from your list after 30 days and is no longer valid.

I have a question about the turbo tax thing also. I noticed I got a disk for it with my new dell. Do I actually have to use the turbo tax to get the $50 dollar referral? Also if I download it from the disk is there a link to the ing accounts? Will it cost me anything to use the disk? I am also assuming if I use that disk that means no referral bonus for someone here correct? Sorry for all the questions. I am seriously thinking about doing this. I would love to get the $50 dollars versus $25 if possible! I just thought of one more question. Can more then one person sign up through turbo tax? I mean could dh get the $50 dollars also?

TIA

Once you sign up how long does it take for the two small deposits to hit your account? I signed up my DD for a new account with me as a secondary accountholder and it has been a couple of days. I am concerned that they are not going to allow the bonus since I already have an account. Does it matter that I used the same bank account as my original account, just a different email address?

Lorix2
06-02-2004, 10:37 AM
shelly - I think it takes anywhere from 2-4 days for the deposits to appear (remember monday was a holiday).

Also, as long as your DD is primary and you are secondary, she'll get the $25 because she is now a new customer.

It can take 3 or 4 days sometimes but probably an average of 2 days.

I'm not sure what you are saying. It's one account per SSN. So as long as you aren't trying to open another one for yourself, then you should get the bonuses for yourself and your DD. I believe she is primary and you are secondary but I don't remember...

I have several referrals too and I would be happy to answer any questions anyone has about setting up an account.

I put all my rebate money, money from returns at Target, etc., and misc checks in this account. It really starts to add up.

I also have it set up to take $20 out of my account every Friday- by the time I leave for Disney, I will have over $600 in spending money!
I don't miss $20 each week!

Someone will be sure to correct me if i am wrong, but when I opened an account for my son, I used the same bank account as mine and I did not have to verify utilizing the two small deposits. My guess is that because I was the joint holder and the account had been verified once, it wasn't necessary.

Have a quick question.

Can I send a referral to my email address for DH. Have him sign up as the primary and myself as the joint. With that give him the $25 credit as well. Then later, after 30 days, close his account and just keep mine open?

Will that work or won't he get credit if I'm joint owner and already opened one?

It could be that it just hasn't shown up yet? Even when it does, you will not be able to touch it for 30 days. It does take a day or so to appear though.

Did you open your account first and get your $25 and then refer your children and then open accounts for them through the link in their emails so you would get the $10 each? Did you already verify your account with that small depoist yet?

Not sure what it could be.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but it does take a couple of days (2-5) for any money to be transferred from your I N G account back to your checking account for you to use.

This makes it a good way not to easily "dip" into your mickey fund for impulse buying. So don't wait until the day before your trip to transfer the money.

I have mine set up to automatically withdraw $20 each Friday out of my checking account and added to my I N G account. Each transaction takes 5 business days to clear before it is officially added to my I N G balance.

I have to agree with everyone that posted here regarding an automatic savings plan - take what you can afford and not miss each pay period and have it thrown into the ING account - it adds up quickly.

The customer service reps on the phone are as friendly as can be...perhapps they were trained at the Disney Institute before it went away?

Since we all want to jeep the board up, we have to remember the rules about referrals...even I have hard time remebering form time to time.

INGDirect gets a big thumbs up from our family as well. All 4 of us have accounts. I opened mine about 8 months ago and referred my husband and sons maybe 4 or so months ago. We've had zero problems with it after many transfers in both directions.

Definitely a great savings tool for ANYTHING you are saving for! :)

THere are actually branches in the Philly and NYC area. The Philly one is set up wonderfully, and have the nicest staff.

Thanks to the postings on the other I N G thread, I was able to take advantage of the TurboTax offer and got the $50 bonus! I also remember reading the offer expired 6/1/04. :(

I had to put in my daughter's state ID# when I opened her account. This was because she's 16 and I think I remember that being the threshold age. If the child is younger, I think all you need is their SS#.

I hope your bonus comes quickly as I see you have a trip approaching (even if you don't need it at least it will be in there earning for you ::yes:: ) My oldest DD who understands money can't wait for me to send her a referral now. You are a great asset to these boards!

I asked this at the Rewards board but also checking here for an answer.

Ok, I have looked all through this thread & can't find an answer. We have MS Money - it came on our Dell last fall. When I'm in the Money program, there is a link for ING but no mention of a $50 referral bonus. Should it mention it up front or will it automatically appear later in the process? It does offer 2 free computer programs on my system but that offer expired last Aug - before we even got the computer! When I click the link to ING online through MS Money - it doesn't show the offer either.

Can I do this? If not, I know to get a referral here by PM but the $50 would be nice. Also, if I can get this, can my hubby get a $50 referral through Money too? Or is that offer per household?

Thanks!

Just checked my account balance! I've got $76.00 already!!! Not bad considering my only deposit was only $1.00! My kids are very excited to see their own accounts! It's a great learning tool (I homeschool..everything is a learning experience!). My DD12 has already been crunching numbers on her calculator adding future birthday and gift money.
I love DIS boards!!!

Thanks to everyone as well for all the great tips!

Is there any reason to wait to open accounts for my kids & DH after my account has been activated? I noticed some people wait a month or more, didn't know if there was a time frame involved or a need to space out new accounts.

Thanks!

this is such a great program, I started with a $10 deposit for both myself and my dd, and then put $50 into mine and now have $120 plus interest in mine. I am not going to touch it and hopefully it will grow larger for our trip in April.

Thanks all of you for the information on this...

I opened my account and then referred my DH and 5kids!
That's $25 X 7=$175 and then I got $10 for each of the 6 referrals=I made $235 on my computer in one afternoon!

One more question - I am in the process of setting up my kids' accounts & sent the referral link to them. When I'm entering myself as the secondary joint holder - do I enter myself as an exsisting customer or new? I'm assuming exsisting but read on another board someone had signed up incorrectly & didn't get the bonus. Just want to make sure I do everything right. :)

PartyofSix

I opened my account then referred my kids and when i put in my information as the joint person it just pulled it up and put the money in my account too.

Can anyone tell me how long they hold the intitial referral funds? I found it odd they posted my first weekly transfer that morning in my account and it has yet to be drawn on my bank account and that was over a week now. Actually friday was a week and they've already credited my another transfer this friday and i bank online with bank of america and can not see this transfer yet either. Just wondering how long until this money is available to me? Just concerned somewhat they are showing money not actually pulling it yet and it's not showing available either? Anyone have this happen?

I love my ING account. By signing up my immediate family, I made $235 in bonuses alone! I stashed out income tax refund there, and make regular deposits as well. The great thing is there's no fees, no minimum balance, no minimum transaction fees, and no maximum on the number of transactions per month. So whenever I have a little extra money, such as garage sales, selling books on Amazon, lottery ticket winnings (never very much!), I deposit it immeidately to ING. I just deposit the amount in my regualr checking account then do an EFT to ING. Its a great way to make sure you don't fritter away small savings. I've transferred sums as little as $3. It does add up! If anyone would like any more details as to how to oen an account, just send me a pm!:Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce:

Isn't great to make that much money in one afternoon!!! I wish it was always that easy! I remember when i opened my account i was so excited and told everyone about it and they looked at me like i was going to be had. I hear it all the time, that I am crazy to be doing stuff online but this is 2004 - I researched what I was getting into and while they are struggling to make ends meet for our april trip, I will be saving little by little. summer is harder for me to put away money as daycare is almost $1000 a month for one child (yes one child but that includes the few field trips she goes on) so once the summer is over I will start adding a little bit in per week that I can afford and it will help it grow all that much more. I really like this program.

Has anyone transferred from ING to their regular checking account and how long does it take to be credited typically? I think it says it could take 2 weeks but I know paypal estimates 4-6 business days and those transfers show up in my checking acct within 48 hours.

Thanks.

For me it has been 2 to 4 days...longer if I transferred near the weekend.

I'd give myself 2 weeks before a trip if I needed the money for a vacation!

It all depends on how your bank handles incoming transfers. I've never had it take more than 3 business days though, with 2 being most common. :)

When ever I try to tell someone about my ING Direct Account and how wonderful and easy it is. Plus they pay you to join. I get alot of looks like it is too good to be true. What is the catch. I explain it all over again and still they don't believe it can be that easy to join, transfer your money and get the kind of return that ING Direct gives. Oh well some people just can't seem to see a good deal for saving money. Can't say I didn't try.

I'm met with the same thing :( But I have 12 referrals that have helped build my account now.

The only thing that's a bummer is having to claim all the referrals as interest earned, but money is money no matter what and any bank the "nonbeliever's" ;) are with are claiming less in their accounts and we're earning more :teeth:

My brother said it was a pyramid scheme!

Even after I explained everything...FDIC, its a bank, neighbor who works for state has his 401k with this bank, etc.

The thing is, everyone who knows me knows I'm a well educated, penny pincher. So, what do they think, I've just lost my mind about this one thing??? I've suddenly become irrational overnight? Oh, well.

sorchamac

I figure that it is cheap and very, very effective advertising for them. They get to write the $35 off as an advertising cost. Then they get to use that same $35 in their investments for the 30 days that they hold it in your account, in the traditional way that banks make money. Then they expect that you will use your account as a vacation or Christmas club account, and add money to your account. That makes more money for them. Plus, the more account holders they have the better their business looks.

When was the last time you told someone a positive thing about a bank??

vhoffman
06-24-2004, 02:25 AM
I agree it sounded like a pyramid scheme to me at first. However, after looking carefully into it, I realized it was legitmate. They are a large, well-established, reputable bank. The referral bonuses get existing customers to do their marketing for them. Whenever I offer someone a referral I always tell them to check out their website first and decide for themselves if its something they're comfortable with. I originally signed up just to get the bonuses and made about $275 in bonuses and referrals. However, I now consider this account my "piggy bank". Its a great place to stash small sums of money that would otherwise go for something else. There's no minimum balance, no minimum transaction amount, and no fees. They also pay 2.10 % interest, which is better than most banks. Also, there's no limit on the number of transactions per month. If I manage to save a little, such as saving from coupons, I write a check for that amount and deposit it. I deposit coin jar savings, lottery ticket winnings (usually $5 or less), proceeds from garage sales, money from selling books on Amazon, any misc sums. I've sometimes written checks to ING for as little as $2. However, it does add up. Its also an incentive to save if you have a place to put it. So far, I've made 17 referrals. However, you get 25 referrals for each account. Between my dh and myself and two kids, that comes to 100 referrals. So I have plenty left. I could get $1000 if I used all 100 referrals. Just half that would make me happy. If anyone has any more questions I can answer, feel free to send me a pm.

ok, i have a question.. we have a savings account with our bank, with what i consider to be a substantial amount... has anyone closed their own regular savings account and transferred it to ing.. has anyone had any problems with ing? it is fdic insured, so the worst that could happen is they would go out of business and we would still get our money, right??

thanks for the info..

They are FDIC Insured. You can go to www. INGDIRECT.com and read all about them.
I did not close my original saving account with my bank. I just started another one.
Ing Direct offers more than just saving accounts. They also CD with an excellant rate of return.
You are the one that needs to feel comfortable moving your money around. So do some research so that you have all the facts. No one can tell you what is right for you.

If you do have a substantial amount of savings, ING might be great for you because of the high interest rates. The regular savings account is 2.10% interest rate, which is quite good right now. They also have various CDs - here are the current rates:

ING DIRECT currently offers the following Orange CDs
Term APY Interest
Rate Effective Date
1 Year 2.25% 2.25% 05/12/04
2 Year 2.875% 2.875% 05/12/04
3 Year 3.625% 3.625% 05/12/04
4 Year 4.00% 4.00% 05/12/04
5 Year 4.40% 4.40% 05/12/04

If you go to www.ingdirect.com and click on the About Us orange, you'll see that they are quite a large international company.

If you have any more questions, just ask here or PM me by the PM button on the bottom of this message.

Good luck!!

Insofar as paying income tax on the referrals, yes, that's true, the bonuses and referrals are reported as interest earned along with the 2.10% interest. However, if you open an account in your child's name, use the referrals from your child's account first (each account gets 25 referrals to send out). That way the referrals and interest are reported as your child's income. Unless your child has substantial income from other sources, such as interest income, usually he won't even meet the threshold for reporting income to be taxed. So the bonuses would escape taxation. I didn't realize that until income tax time last year and made all our referrals off dh's account. However, I'm trying to "top off" dh's account because I understand that if you use all 25 referrals in one account you get some sort of bonus for that. It remains to be seen what! Anyone with any questions, feel free to send me a pm! Happy savings!:smooth: :smooth: :smooth:
