Ok, after continually reading or witnessing the disappointments in the Box Office for Disney, I had to post some information about an upcoming movie.
You may have seen the ads for "The Princess Diaries" with Julie Andrews. The current buzz is that early viewings have recieved great reviews, with adults as well as children. Hopefully, Disney will actually have a live-action film success. (Does anyone remember the last live-action DISNEY film that was successful?---the remake of Parent Trapp maybe?--long time ago in any case).
Let's hope for good news.
ALSO:
Let us remember:
HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF. The Disney magic comes in highs and lows. Does anyone remember the early 80's when the company was struggling? One year (maybe 82), housekeeping at the WDW resorts was limited to Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays (make your own bed!!). The magic will return, but this time, Uncle Mikie will not be the one saving the company. Someone will be saving it from him.

THIS is the movie I have been waiting for! Every time I see the preview for it I laugh out loud. I hope the movie is as funny as the ads.

We saw the trailer yesterday and it does look good. Reminded us of The Parent Trap remake which we loved. The Princess Bride looks like a different twist on the My Fair Lady/Pygmalion story, so it's funny that Julie Andrews is in it. Don't know the numbers for Parent Trap, but another live action film that isn't all that old is was Jungle to Jungle. Thought that one was well done and I think successful.

It looks funny, as you say. But there's one real reason that I want to see The Princess Diaries--the princess herself. I've seen the trailer at the Disney Store, and I like how they turn "Mia" from a plain tomboy to a regal beauty. I think I have a new love....Anne Hathaway is quite pretty. I can't wait for this film!

We are anxiously awaiting it, too. We read an article and it sounded like they had a lot of fun filming it.

When I first heard about it online, thoughts of "another lame live-action Disney film" came into my mind. Now that I have seen the trailer, those thoughts have been wiped out. It seems kinda funny. But I'm kind of worried that its coming out in August, usually the doldrums for summer movies. Well, we will see.

This is one that I am Hoping Disney did right. After repeating for taking my 6 year old twin DDs to Shrek and not really feeling too much better about Atlantis. I am holding my breath on this one. I feel really good about the G rating. I tend to hope Disney will get back to making movies for KIDS. I guess it is the KID inside me that holds out HOPE that all of us KIDS can go and enjoy a movie together, instead of me having to be a MOM instead and try to keep my kids from hearing and seeing things that I don't feel are right for my girls at this age. I really do have HIGH hopes that Disney has created both a HIT and a movie that I can enjoy with my girls. We can dream can't we??

Hopefully this movie will be good. So many people that I know (even non Disney fans) are looking forward to seeing this because of Julie Andrews. I can't wait to go.

The Princess Diaries, if it lives up to the Young Adult book, should be great. It should do as well as another movie based on a YA novel - Mrs. Doubtfire.
Can you tell I'm a librarian?

I just have to say that while I think the movie does look well done and funny, I think it sends kind of a bad message. You may think I'm crazy for saying this, but from what I saw of the previews they all thought she was "ugly" until they made her over and then she was pretty.....its basically telling girls that they have to look a certain way to be pretty.....now I hope I'm wrong, but that's just the impression I got from the trailer. It does look funny, but as I said, I just don't like the message I feel its giving.

My friend & I saw this trailer during Atlantis. We were laughing hysterically at it, not just because it looked funny, but because the star (pre-transformation) looked exactly like one of our friends!!!!
but it really looks like a good movie.

I agree Disenchanted!!! It looks cute, but like it is sending the *opposite* message of Beauty-and-The-Beast: that looks are the most important thing. I'm hoping there will be a good message at the end, like, that who she is on the inside is what makes her a princess...not an expensive make-over.

I saw the movie and loved it! I didn't feel that it was sending the "opposite message of Beauty-and-the-Beast". True they did the make-over thing, but the previews don't show the whole story. In fact, she doesn't want to fit in with the "in girls" at her school and hides under a hat after the change. She sees that they are beautiful but shallow.
At a critical point of the movie, she looks very un-princess-like again, but makes the right choices. I don't want to give too much away (even though the plot is fairly predictable), but I don't think you would come away feeling like it was saying appearances are everything. Important maybe, but what is inside is what counts!
Check it out with an open mind and later if you don't like the message, talk it over with your kids.
Just got back from seeing the Princess Diaries. I was looking forward to the movie- but also worried that it might be sending the "wrong" message. DO NOT WORRY......the Princess and the Queen are both quite empowered- and Amelia (played marvelously by Anne Hathaway) does NOT lose her essence of being. I haven't laughed and cried so much at a movie in a very, very long time. It IS a chick-flick (my 3 daughters loved it, my 5 year old son was "bored"!). Julie Andrews is absolutely royal- but the magic between her and Joe (played by a very sexy Hector Elizondo ) has quite a bit of well, Disney version of romantic tension! This movie has very little (if any real) profanity, no real violence (quite a bit of slapstick)- and it is all about being true to yourself. This one is destined to become a classic at our house!
