Does anybody know if caffeine slows down weight loss? I've checked out various sites where it says that caffeine increases the metabollic rate, but I'm wondering if it increases water retention also. Over the last few weeks my weight loss rate has changed dramatically and the only thing that I can think of that I'm doing differently is drinking diet coke. I don't think that it's drinking soda that is causing it because I had been drinking other diet sodas with no caffeine. So do you think that it could be the caffeine, or do you think that it's just a coincidence?

TIA
Catherine

Catherine get off the caffeine wagon now. Don't do it. I went from drinking two two liters a day to allowing myself one CAN of coke in the mornings then water the rest of the day. I believe it makes you retain and slowers you loses significatly (sp). I drank a ton of water during the day and never missed cokes anymore. I don't believe in diet anything if i'm gonna have something i'm gonna get the REAL thing. Drink your water and you will see your losing start to pick up right away. Best wishes

Hi Catherine--
My experience with soda in general, is in moderation. Atkins book says caffeine lowers your blood sugar too much and makes you crave carbs and nutrasweet slows your loss. I also find I retain water when I drink too much soda.
I keep Diet Rite in the house, so when I crave something other than water, I grab one of these.
Good luck!

I would guess it's the combination of Nutrasweet and caffeine that causes a problem. I definitely notice that I crave sweets more even if I have a caffeine-free diet Pepsi. That said, I just can't give up my morning cup of coffee and my weight loss has been slow. I can't figure out how coffee can speed your metabolic rate and yet slow weight loss. I blame the Nutrasweet. If anything, switch to a Splenda sweetened soda (the Waist Watchers Ginger Ale is good and it has no caffeine. They have a root beer too but I haven't tried it) and see if that makes a difference.

You've done so well. I would hate to see you get hung up here.

Thanks for your responses. I'm going to stop drinking the diet coke and see if it makes a difference. I'll let you know! :hyper:

Soda is like battery acid. I dont think you can even speculate about the sugar or caffine in it. Green tea has caffine and is great for weight loss. Give up the soda.

I've also read that anything sweet (even no carb no caloires) can stall weight loss because your "degestvie" process starts as soon as you taste and smell a food. So your body prepares for the "sweet" by producing insulin.
