Fair warning.
1. Some rental car companies put a "hold" on your account. In this case that would tie up the cash in your bank account so be sure you find out what is going to happen.
2. Some rental car companies run a credit check on debit card rentals. This will show up on your credit report as if you are trying to buy a car.

I am sure you have very good reasons for not wanting a credit card by having one for emergencies and or travel is a good idea. Debit cards even if they have a Visa or MC logo do not work the same exact way as a regular credit card does.

Another alternative is an American Express card. You pay an annual fee, but you are required to pay the balance each month so you can't really build up a big balance.

One other thing, the companies that take debit run a credit report on you at the counter, and will refuse to rent to people who don't pass the required credit standards.
We saw a couple turned away due to credit at Dollar or Budget (sorry I can't recall which) on our last WDW trip. They didn't have a credit card, and were pretty well stuck.
Also, credit inquiries can negatively impact your credit history.

Alamo does not put a hold on the card, it changes you the exact amount at rental and no more. They also do not do a credit check. Dollar does that one, which can really mess up your report.

That is what Dollar does. Alamo does take debit cards, BUT does not run a credit check. Alamo does, however, require proof of a round trip ticket.
