I've gone on line and learned how to make a starting chain, but now I don't know where to go from there. I'm just trying to make a simple scarf, but I don't have a pattern. I have a 7 inch chain made, thinking that was how wide my scarf would be. How do I continue on? TIA

Insert the hook in the second loop from the hook, put the yarn around the hook and pull up a loop, (now you have 2 loops on the hook), wrap the yarn around the hook and draw it through both loops. (that's a single crochet) Do that across in each chain. When you have single crocheted in each chain across, make one more chain and turn so that you are going right to left again.
hope you understand this. Karen

break it into steps easier to follow and then youll have no problems counting .
that exactly how i do it princess ariael
step 1. Insert the hook in the second loop from the hook, put the yarn around the hook and pull up a loop, (now you have 2 loops on the hook),step 2 . wrap the yarn around the hook and draw it through both loops. (that's a single crochet) Do that across in each chain. step 3 .When you have single crocheted in each chain across, make one more chain and turn so that you are going right to left again.

I don't mind at all Carolyn. Anything that makes it easier.
If you're losing stitches, it's probably because you forgot to add the one chain at the end of the row.
After you master the single crochet, then comes.......the double crochet!
