View Full Version : Need ideas for proposal

I just got approved to buy the ring today, so now I really have to get it together!
I'm sailing in just about a week, and I need some ideas on how to pop the question onboard. So far, I've decided I want to do it on Formal Night. I'm thinking about taking her up to Deck 10 just around sunset and asking then, and possibly having a camera guy on standby for pics afterward. I want to add something Disney-ish to this mix, seeing as we met on College Program. Any ideas?
Also, has anyone else proposed onboard? What did you do? How helpful were Guest Services and/or the Cruise Director?
Any help is appreciated. I'm trying not to freak out! ;)

Congrats! What a great idea. I'm sure she'll be thrilled however you do it.
What about at Palo? Maybe have the ring in her dessert. No that's not very romantic. I'm sure the other Disers will have great suggestions. Have you called Disney and asked for suggestions. The bridal people would be good at this I bet.
Good luck.

IS there a way to arrange to have Mickey and or Minnie there when you propose? That'd be cool! Does the Captain ever make announcements over a loud speaker? That would be one memorable announcement! Let me think a little longer- maybe I can come up with something else!

Congratulations!!!!!
Maybe ask them to bring it out not in the dessert but AS the dessert.
Or maybe as the appetizer?
What about having the ring in a Mickey shaped box that is then set on the plate?
If you both drink champagne what about having the servers standing by with a bottle of the Fairy Tale Cuvee? Disney exclusive....
I'd definitely touch base with Guest Services and see about alerting the photogs...but as a backup have your own camera handy. If your servers (including head server) are in on this SOMEONE will gladly take pics - not to mention the other guests around you and at your table.
One other thought...tuck a handkerchief into your pocket! She is probably going to get a bit teary eyed and will want to make sure she hasn't turned into racoon eyes before the photo!
And be sure to let us know how it goes!

'Course this is me and I'm more of the surprise/clown type then romantic type. But I'd sneak away when she wasn't looking, ask if I could borrow one of their character costumes. And then propose as Goofy or one of the other characters. Imagine her suprise when she realizes it's you. Of course you'd have to do it when there are no kiddos around, but Palo should fit the bill.
Congrats!

Congrats! Here are my ideas...
Sign up for the "Romance Package". On the day/night of your proposal, they could scatter rose petals on your bed and have champagne in your cabin.
See if you can get a favorite charachter to present the ring?
How about a treasure hunt on Castaway Cay? Maybe guest services can help you out?
I think having the ring presented on the dessert plate at Palos would be very romantic! I am sure they would do something very unique and special!
How about at one of your destinations? Do you do anything unusual like scuba diving? What if you found it in a treasure box while you are both under the water?
Formal night would be great....you could have your pic done with Mickey and Minnie and have them suprise with the ring box.
By the way, get a REALLY nice ring box! It makes the presentation SO wonderful.

What about an interesting towel and rose creation that would include the ring when you get back to the room?
Or how about a piano solo at sessions with "your song" and then the presentation of the ring while you sit near the big round windows?
I am sure cast members are going to be more than happy to think up a plan with you....
How about a champagne breakfast - in room - with the ring as part of the morning surprise?
What if the captain or another cast member knocked on your room door with a special delivery - a mickey shaped box with the ring inside?
How about a leisurely stroll on Castaway Key with a proposal in the sand? (easier on the knees)
For sure book the Romance at Sea package.

Talk to Guest Services or your Head Server - I am sure if something could be done, they will do it for you - But give them enough time to arrange it all for you -
I like the idea of Mickey and Minnie being there! That would make a wonderful memory!

What great ideas so far and such a thoughtful guy to go through all this. My suggestion is make sure you print out this thread for your future wife to put in her memory book. I guarantee you she will want a copy. CONGRATULATIONS
And please tell us what you decide and how it all turns out :hyper:

Whatever you do, don't put the ring in your 'checked' luggage -- you saw Meet the Parents, right?
I would definitely book the Romance Package and then see Guest Services to see if they have any special ideas.
PLEASE report back as we see a few of these types of posts on here every now and then but I never seem to see the after-story.

a friend of my daughter's proposed by creating a bride and groom "build a bear" himself for his fiance'.. he gave them to her along with the ring and asked her to marry him.. I don't know if they have a Build a Bear store near you, they're in most of the Malls up here..
You could get a Mickey & Minnie bridge & groom doll and have it brought out at dinner... what about getting the bride & groom hats (they had them in Mickey's Mates when were were there in January
Keep us posted and let us know how everything goes!!!:bride: :groom:

We were going to Green Turtle Cay (in the abacos) for a vacation with friends and he planned to suggest we go looking for sea shells...we love to have momento's from our trip and he planned to find a really nice shell and say "Hey...look at this shell", etc. and the ring would have been in side or he wouldn't have used a shell at all if he couldn't have found one. That would have been a huge surprise..lol. But..he was like a puppy with two you know whats and he sprang the ring on my while I was applying clearasil to my face in huge gobs a week before we went on the trip. I dont' know about you but I would be nervous about giving the ring to anyone to present. Make sure it is insured..you should do that when you bring it home before you go on the cruise if you can. Usually it is very easy to just add to your home owners policy or renters insurance. All that said...I really liked the idea of you dressing up as one of the characters and giving her the ring...MAKE SURE YOU BRING A VIDEO CAMERA!!!! Congrats to you...how exciting! Can't wait for your trip report! but..umm...you can skip the deals of the sureal bath that might occur after that...lol

Yes, yes, yes ..... the shell idea is great! You can go to any craft store and get a oyster/clam shell and put the ring inside. Have the shell in your pocket and conveniently "drop" it and point it out to her. This could be done on any port day so you could do it early or at Castaway Cay. How fun for you :hyper:
Then use the formal night to have a congratulations cake brought to your table and the dining manager could announce your engagement.

Have Mickey and Minnie in on the deal...
Go and have your pictures taken formal night...Give the CM your camera and maybe let the Camera Guy in on your proposal...
When you get up in line to take your picture with Mickey & Minnie...the camera will be on you and her expression...As you begin to pose get on one knee and pop the question! The CM will be snapping your film away and you get those couple of shots from the ships photographer...
Congrats!

Dave, Dave, Dave! (Belch!)
On one of the first cruises we took, a man was 'picked' from the audience to help the CD with one of his port talks, you know the ones that show the rest of the week on the in-room tv's. Well, the CD hands the guy a note card and says just read what's on the card. The guy begins to read about the port, then throws in "XXXXX, will you marry me?" The whole room got kind of quiet, then there was this loud scream and she ran up on stage. Everyone applauded and cheered. It was cute.

Since you asked for a guys idea, here goes.
First off, all the other ideas are great.
All I would try to add, if it can be heard in the dining room, is to have it coordinated so that the Captain blows the horn once she says "I Do".
Good luck and congrats.
Jeff
My favorite is the proposal during formal photos with Mickey and Minnie. It has everything - photos, the element of surprise, Disney Characters and most likely a clapping audience. This is great!

Here's the first thing that I came up with as an Idea. I came up with this without reading any of the other posts first so as not to be influenced by their ideas, so forgive me if this is something of a duplicate.
To pull this idea off, you will have to get help from DCL, but worst case, the idea has enough time to be implemented even if you have to wait and contact the cruise director after getting on board.
Make sure you act really interested in the evening show on formal night. Get to the theater early, and about 5 minutes before the show, excuse your self to go to the bathroom.
Rather than going to the bathroom, a cast member leads you back stage. At the openning of the show, the cruise director indicates that Micky is giving away a door prize tonight and they make it look like they are doing something to randomly pull a cabin number out of box. Of course the cabin number is your girl friend's cabin number and she is asked to come up on stage to receive the gift. Micky Mouse meets her on stage with a small box and asks her to open in. While she is openning the box, you approach from back stage (where her back is turned). When she gets the box open (which of course contains "the ring"), you appear from behind her, get on one knee, and ask her to marry you.

Now I've read the other posts. I love the idea of having the event coordinated with the captain and getting the horn to blow when she says yes (all it takes is any ship officer to watch and radio the bridge when to blow the horn).
That said, the idea of something happening in the theater and the ships horn are pretty much mutually exclusive (I don't think the horn can be hear from anywhere "inside" the ship).
Don't forget to get a video of the event!!!

My Finacee and I got engaged in Aug. on the Disney cruise. He did it on the night we had Palo resservations. When we got there, there was a dozen red roses on the table. (I was giving him brownie points just for that.) ::yes:: We had our entire dinner, then when our waitress served our desserts, she brought our 2 extra desserts. One of those was covered up. Of course I wanted to see what was under the lid. When I lifted it up, there was a plate with ice chips & flower petals on in and a ring box in the middle.
He had set everything up without me knowng a thing. Apparently, the whole restaurant knew except for me. Everyone was staring, and of course I was crying. It was very romantic. So we decided to do the Disney cruise for our honeymoon as well.:bride: :groom:

I don't mean to be unromantic, but I'd suggest proposing NOW and having the cruise as a honeymoon. I guess I'm still old-fashioned enough to be a little shocked by unmarrieds traveling together. Just because "everyone does it" doesn't make it right.

What a great thread. There are so many nice ideas here but my vote goes to the formal night with Mickey and Minnie and all the pictures that will be taken during this.
Also, as someone mentioned, definitely print this, your future wife wil love having this as a keepsake.
Most of all, good luck, and she is a very lucky lady to have someone so thoughtful.

I would go for a romantic dinner at Palo, or for the Formal Night.... (not just out on Deck10.... or in your stateroom... or at your regular dinner seating...) In both cases, be sure to get the DCL staff involved to make sure it all works flawlessly!!!
Hey, how about the Formal Night, followed by a private dinner at Palo!!!
If you would want to consider the Formal Night, This would be an excellent set-up, at the foot of the stairwell in the Lobby, with Mickey and Minnie in Tux and gown. I can just see the photos of you and your Fiance, with you on bended knee, at the foot of that stairwell.... the kicker would be, that everybody is there at that time!!! Either lined up for the photos, or just enjoying the activity on their way to dinner, etc.. You will want to have prior arrangements so that you are not standing there in line, but escorted right up to be the first ones to have your photo done when Mickey and Minnie make their big entrance.... On our cruise, there was one occasion where the cruise director, Rachel, was on the speaker once to call attention to one special little boy who was meeting Captain Hook... So this could conceivably be big deal!!!
Bottom Line.... YOU know what your future bride would appreciate the most... The most romantic thing is to be able to make the effort to make it special just for her!
Like, for me, I do not like the idea of being called up on stage... that would be uncomfortable... And, sorry, but the idea of a gorgeous sparkling diamond ring with sticky wine, champaigne, or dessert on it..... nope....
Congratulations and good luck!!!!

I love the Palo idea, and I loved the original idea of doing it at sunset on Deck 10...now for my own opinion...
If you are going to Disney before hand then but a glass slipper (or if there is a store by you that has them) have it engraved with 'Will You Marry Me' or 'I Finally Found You' or something like that. Take her on the stairs and lean down like you were picking up something, take the slipper out and say, "You must have dropped this."

I too love the glass slipper idea (also makes for an ausome keep-sake of the event) BUT...
If I were attempting to implement an idea like this, I would be afraid that she might not make the connection between glass slipper and marriage proposal. She might not be able to read the words "Will You Marry Me?" engraved on a glass slipper (small lettering on a poor back ground that's at least 5 feet from her face).
In contrast (just to make the point), you could hold up a diamond ring 20 feet away and she would most likely know instantly what it was for.
The other way this idea could flop is if the slipper doesn't fit (can you even buy glass slippers in specific shoe sizes?) It's going to kill the romance of the moment if she tries to put on the glass slipper and it's two sizes too small (and I don't think you'll find a way for her to "try it on" first and keep the moment a secret.
Sorry if I sound like such a downer on what is a great idea, but I'm also a detailed thinker who is very practical and meticulous. You have to think about what could go wrong and find ways to help midigate these problems.
For example, in the suggestion I gave, I initially thought it would be cool if it initially looked like Micky Mouse was attempting to propose to her (something she would think is a joke), but the "joke" would become serious when Micky took his head off and it turned out to be you inside (what a suprize). But then I thought... Disney is trying to create an illusion to the kids that Micky Mouse is real, so it wouldn't be in their best interest for you to pop out of a Micky costume in front of hundreds of kid on a Disney boat and therefore Disney wouldn't cooperate with you.

Guess I thought of a the glass slipper as being something small that would be handed to her... with the ring inside. The ones I've seen were more a pincushion sort of thing.

As creative as the stage, characters and desserts are.....I would not want bystanders on this special moment  . I don't have pictures of the moment my DH and I got engaged but I still remember it perfectly, I'm glad no one was there but us ;).
I really like the glass slipper idea. At night, out on deck, no one around.
The Romance at Sea Package is a great suggestion. That would secure your Palo ressie and a couple's massage at the spa so you could be more relaxed when you board the ship. You have enough to be nervous about without worrying about anything else. The night of your Palo dinner, there will be a romantic turndown with rose petals. She won't be expecting it so when she opens your stateroom door she will be distracted, looking around the room ect.:lovestruc . That would be an easy time to drop to one knee and give her the ring :love2: .
That is how I would prefer it, private and simple. You know your lady best though so follow your heart.

He had it set up on Secret Deck 7 and had ordered champagne and roses, had the ship's photographer....he even had Mickey there for the photo op....BUT BEWARE...HAVING THE CHARACTERS THERE IS GOING TO COST YOU A BUNDLE....IT WAS $500 JUST TO HAVE MICKEY FOR 30 MINUTES!!!

Okay, the first thing that poped into my mind was probably not possible because it would be HUGE, but it would be funny.
You'd get her in a certian seat for Who wants to be a Mousketeer and she would get picked to go on stage. After getting a few really easy Disney questions thrown at her, the MC could say "And for the million Dollar question, we have a special guest to ask it. Then you'd come out and propose.
Yeah, that couldn't happen, but how cool would that be? :)
My husband proposed to me by giving me a small Tigger who had the ring on his tail. I'm kind of a tigger freak so it was great for us. The first thing I said was "You realize that we HAVE to go to Disney World on our honeymoon? " He agreed, then I said Yes. :)
However you do it, I am sure it will be special. Maybe call DCL now and ask them for ideas?

It's not that far fetched an idea. It really depends upon how much Disney is willing to "support the cause". Obviously the simpler, the better. If you like the idea of doing one of these "public" suprises, I'd descreatly contact the Cruise director as soon as you board, even ask her for some ideas. That will give you a clue as to how much they are willing to do for you. And when I was talking about including Micky in the "act", it was under the assumption that he'd already be there for the show so that you wouldn't have to "rent" him for 5 C notes.

Thanks you all for all of the ideas. I will be thinking this over and consulting with the CD and/or Guest Services once I get on board.
Some replies:
plutospup - Yes, we're sailing on 2/28
MrsPete - Don't worry. Her parents are coming, too. ;)
I really like the ship's horn idea, but that might just be because I'm a boy. I think my plan is to see what they will help me get away with onboard. The inital moment is definately going to be private, but then I'll probably arrange something silly to follow.
And, although I was a good friend of Goofy myself, I wouldn't want to do anything to spoil the magic. Plus, every time we see Goofy, he proposes to her, so that wouldn't be anything new!
Keep the ideas coming. I promise I will post an update once we get back, maybe even some pics too.

You can either buy one in one of the gift shops the first day and continue to use it for every Disney trip you take afterwards. It is nice to read how life changes (i.e- you honeymoon cruise or WDW trip and the first time you take your children!). We are taking our son who will be 5 this summer to WDW (after a DCL) and I can't wait to write in my journal about it!

How wonderful! This idea comes from Perfect Proposal, t.v. show.
Ask a couple at your table or head waiter & waitress pretend he wants to you both to help him pull off a surprise proposal to his girlfriend. So if you do it at Palo's and she thinks someone else is getting engaged she will be sooo surprised. They had a dessert with the names of the "pretend" couple and showed it to the girlfriend before hand then switched it to their names after she left. So when the dessert was presented she had no idea her name would be on the dessert. Hope this is not too confusing. But it was such a surprise to her and made me cry. Best Wishes to you both!:bride: :groom: :lovestruc

Things have been so exciting lately that it's hard to keep track of it all!
The entire trip went beautifully, even though not everything went exactly as I had planned. I got the ring through security just fine, and I hid it in my coat until we got on the ship. My Darling Fiance wondered why I was so cold all the time. ;)
As soon as we got on board, we ate lunch at Parrot Key. At the end of the meal, DF got up to use the restroom. I figured I was running out of time to ask her parent's permission, so I quickly told them what was up. They both said they were happy for us. Then, her mom started crying just as DF was coming back to see us. Thinking on her feet, DF's mom told DF she was crying because she was thinking about how much her mother (who passed a few years ago) would have enjoyed this trip. DF just thought her mother was being silly, as DF's granmother never liked to travel!
So, E-day was set for Formal Night on Monday. This was nearly perfect because I had rented a tux and DF was to be wearing white prom dress that she "always dreamed she would get married in someday." I say almost perfect because I had planned to propose on deck at sunset. However, while the sun was shining Monday, it was extremely windy, so I knew that plans would have to be changed.
I had made arrangements with Guest Services to have champange and a photographer on deck, so I was on my way to make changes when I ran into Quentin and Ang from Cruise Staff. I begged the for help, and Quentin got on the phone to Scott, the assistant cruise director. Scott moved the whole shindig inside and took care of everything. He suggested Diversions as the quietest spot on the ship at the time, and he send the champange and photographer there. He even talk to Andy, the ship's Technical Director, and had him create a message to put on all the screens in the bar asking her to marry me.
That night, after we had taken a few pictures, I handed DF's camera to her dad and asked her to come with me. I was a bit nervous and, in my haste to get to Diversions, I almost killed her on a newly polished floor. When we got to Diversions, we were a few minutes early, so Andy wasn't ready with the message. I had her sit down for a moment, and when Andy gave me the nod, I started my speech. After I confessed how much I loved her, I turned her around so she could see the screens and I got down on one knee and proposed. My hands were shaking so badly that I don't even think she could see the ring. She was so excited that she didn't even say yes until I asked again. But, I will never forget the look on her face at that moment.
After we regained our composure, we took some pictures and drank some champange. Scott stopped by to wish us well, and then we went to dinner. The rest of the trip was an absolute riot, because nearly every cast member onboard knew who we were and went out of the way to make us feel special. And, all of the guests knew us as well, due to an unfortunate disclosure while DF's parents were playing "Match Your Mate." But, all in all, it was a fabulous trip. Even with all my fumbling about, she still loved it and she still said yes!
